i recently got to know someone in SG that's also an avid road cyclist. He's going to North Thai at the end of this year for the Mae Hong Son loop++ 😅

i asked him how he train for the long hill climbs... he said have to go Msia ride but the hills in johor aren't even close to the slopes of north thai. That plus the altitude 🤢

Every year, Le Etape Tour de France will do 1 stage of Tour de France route.  It is usually 150km with mountain top ending on Alpe de Huez.

Local rider usually will end up training in Ipoh once a month.

They will start from Ipoh and end up in Brinchang.

Bicycle rentals abundant….again…

The amount of public bikes sitting to be rented around bus stops is crazy again.

Not only bus stops but they are still just dumped wherever the rider wants apparently.

I was walking on the green corridor and saw several….just sitting in the middle of nowhere. One was dumped in the bushes. It’s going to rot into trash.

I counted the amount at one of my local bus stops. 38. Why is this a thing.

Wasn’t this already tried? Didn’t it kind of fail and all the bikes ended up in a landfill in China? They were definitely a mess here. Many of the bikes were trashed and not functional.

Other countries have adopted the approach of having docking stalls. You remove from one place and have to dock it into the next set the end of your journey for it to be complete.

We’re just spinning our wheels here.

And yet, here they are. It’s been 5 years and they are still here, and these companies (SGBike & Anywheel) aren’t going bust like their first generation counterparts (ofo, oBike, Mobike). The idea works, maybe not very well currently, but it does work. They are here to stay.

Just a few days ago I thought I saw someone sharing how you can print or take a picture of the QR code or sth so you could get around the system and park the bikes anywhere.

Walked past a pile of new rental bikes near a bus stop yesterday. Must be a new player in town and their workers just dump the bikes at a single location and call it a day instead of distributing them to many points. 

Why they keep whipping a dead horse as the model has proven to fail?

I can attest to that....a couple of weeks ago, was with my family at MBS waterfront, just outside of the MBS Shoppes is this mass orgy of various rental bikes companies bikes parked at the designated area. the issue here is the designated area is a narrow rectangular red border area that can probably hold 20 bikes parked neatly side by side. The number of bikes there can easily be over a hundred, kid you not.

Since it had been a while my son rode a bicycle, I decided to try renting one. Setting up the app and credit card info took me a while.

What was frustrating was when it was time to return the bike to the same area, we had to hunt  for the 5cm X 5cm (at most) QR code on the ground near to the designated border lines. Took me a good 5 mins to make my way through the mass of bicycles to eventually find it.

At that point in time I was thinking this QR code return system could be easily hacked if someone just take a picture of the QR code and store it in the phone to be used each time he returns the bike. Unless the QR code is tied to a GPS location that the bike should have.

I guess the bike rental companies just exploit whatever grant they are taking and not doing a good job.

The grant is called "Active Commute Grant" by LTA. Must be going for that carlite thing.
