Lorry altercation with cyclist at Pasir Ris

Its a little more than give or take. Red car in picture 1 has to keep his eye out for motorcyclist turning left from his right side, car in next lane turning left on a straight road, and if there is a pedestrian crossing, yolo pmds.

Let us also not include the cyclist who is speeding down the stretch and wants to turn left ahead of you thinking that he's a tour de france cyclist and ye shall yield before him.

[laugh]

Agree lah brother, but I am taking a genreral rules of thumb scenario. If we start to included exceptions like a fast speeding bike, PMD, a maid bringing her employer's girl rushing across the road in front and an old auntie jay walking slowly, then nothing will work no matter how much we give and take.

Here's an illustration on why cyclists ride 2 abreast.

this is very misleading,  cos the photo only show 1 car. if singapore road is that empty. give them 1 whole lane i also dun care.

When red car sees the cyclists, he should slow down , form up behind the cyclists before left turn. Likewise for the second scenario.

There won't be massive jam because 1. We do not have too many roadbikes on the road, 2. They are slow but not standstill.

If both drivers and cyclists could adopt give and take approach, I would think there should be less conflict like the Eric case

here lies the issue, if you can timed the distance and speed of the turning, you car always drive a tad faster to turn and let the cyclist slow down for once ? At least have a taste of what hogging the traffic is like.

I know, its a dumb idea, but every now and then this happens to me when I ride on the road ..

Actually if the red car in scenario 1 is aware of his surroundings, look out for the row of cyclists, and let the cyclists pass through before driver make his turn, there is no difference whether it’s single file or riding abreast. Cyclists also have to see the driver signal of intention.

What if there is only one cyclist? Driver still have to lookout for the cyclist and cyclist still have to either give way to driver or quickly ride past the junction to let the driver pass.

When I ride, the moment I approach a filter lane like that and I need to go straight, I will stretch out my right hand to indicate to the drivers behind, please give way, I'm going straight.

Usually they will slow down and not cut in front of me to filter left.

I feel hand gestures like these is being courteous and drivers won't be that dulan when they see cyclists being courteous to them.

I avoid neighbourhoods pavements when I ride becuase way too many people

But when I pass by, I will go very slow. As slow as people walking

I don’t have a bell

But when they hear the bicycle tick tixk tick sound (I don’t know what makes that sound)

They give me way, I tell them: sorry ah, hehe

But I don’t zoom fast, I still go slowly becuase sure to have another chap in front

Heng Ponggol there the corney island and after corney island there the sandy path very nice

Both ways cannot work for us here leh. 1st one will cause accident when the red car stop for no reason. 2nd method, we will have causeway jams on major roads haha

I think LTA will start collecting road tax and ERP charges for the cyclists in scenario 2 since they are taking up more spaces on the roads.

Agreed. I think all cyclists need to go through some form of etiquette lesson, although quite impossible for LTA to implement.

I guess if really really really really have to cycle abreast (cause I don't really advocate for this even though I know it isn't illegal), just make sure there is ample space for drivers to overtake lor. Huge roads like seletar, mandai etc...

End of the day, like many mentioned before, the cyclist is usually at the losing end in an accident (except this lorry and bike guy, seems like the lorry driver on losing end somehow). So if really got car going into filter lane turning left, just let it go first if you think he is trying to overtake you. Quite easy to tell if the car is willing to give way or not.

As a driver I greatly appreciate such gestures

From my experience with cycling on Singapore's roads, I think 99% of most drivers and cyclists are actually pretty tolerant of each other on the roads. A friendly wave from me is usually reciprocated and appreciated. Even if got close shave, at most just kpkb only and won't take any real action.

For this case, its simply a case of that 1% outliers from both camps meeting up on the road on that fateful day.

Both are farking idiots  [laugh]

Support!

I won't be surprised.

Even cabs and buses have to pay ERP.

Anything that takes up road space needs to pay.

Is it always the eastern and southern side of the island we get such issues ah?

I seem to always see these MAMIL AMDK attitude cyclists videos near vivo and eastern side, and seem like many such accidents happens along changi and Pasir Ris area?

I have seen many cyclist athletes near  my area, some in grps, some alone, but they are usually very Ok.

And I agree that hand signal is very important, I think if cyclists just give a thumbs up to drivers, most times drivers will give in to them even if they riding abreast, Is like cyclists telling drivers,  "please bear with me" , " appreciate" or "thank you". It  just make ppl song a little and dont mind that little held up.

Is that middle finger or that CCB attitude that always spark the fire.

That's what I thought any safe and considerate cyclist would do - sticking out 1 hand to indicate if they are keeping to the lane or turning left.

Frustrations and accidents happen often because drivers behind are not warned in advance of the intentions of riders (and drivers too).
