Its a good idea to give those who need it

not those who can afford and being cheapskate under the pretext of freegan

It is not about giving to others. These are ex owner who discarded items in the trash. If no one takes it, the items will be in a land fill. In theory, no one owns the discard items.

Yup - the LML vs Indonesian helper legal case confirmed that.

As they say ........ hold the money in one hand, and use the other hand [laugh] After that, lo and behold, you still have your money!

I dont believe everything the fellow said. Some of the things he said you can tell is face saving cos you know he also dont wish ppl to despise him.

I have seen temples giving out free lunch to ppl who walk-in. This I believe ppl can get free meals, after eating free lunch tabao one more for dinner. Nobody will question these ppl. Of course there are some who genuinely need it. You just dunno who there are.

In my eyes he is a cheapo. He can save the money to go travelling 5-6x a year. He is probably living off donations especially on meals.

Of all the things in the world, there must be a balance. If this freegan does not have a good paying job and is in need. He should be acceptable. But if another one is competing with other and not contributing back to the society. Then I would say it is no good.

Let's take for example I did not agree to the statement of working less and hunting for free items more.

I am a freegan within my own living cycle, I eat the excess food going around eating the same for 2 to 3 rounds. I keep certain of my staffs to recycle them. Any money I save and I do have extras, I do spare it to those who need. Just I hope our society know the meaning of balance and not overdo with greed.

DisclaimerI don't hold anything against freegans, but if they are overly desperate in  hunting for free stuff and even work lesser, the line may be crossed.

If everyone stop spending, will the world not stop moving? Afterall, all these free stuff come for someone else pocket, and I wonder if taboo applies to these group of "free" thinker.

What's wrong with working lesser? We aren't born to be slaves to the elites and consumption!

we have to see it from the point of view of circular economy..... let's put to you an example:

A Freegan managed to cut all his living expenses from $2000/mth to $250/mth.

For sake of simplicity, this Freegan works as an hourly rated worker/gig economy worker.

To achieve $2000/mth income to sustain his living expenses, he used to have to put in 52hrs/week of work.

Now, after starting Freeganism, he spend most of his time scourging for "waste" while putting in only 5 hrs/week of work to earn that $250/mth.

That means someone else have to be working that 47hr/mth to "cover-up" that reduction in work by the Freegan.

So, unless we can all go back to Kampung days, accept the regression of the society, accept the lower standard of healthcare and living standard that all of us have achieved over the generations as a society, I still standby my term for them as parasite.

Basically you are not happy that the fella isn't working as hard as he can to support the economy (where you are in the top tier)? He's a human being you know? Not a serf.

What about high incomer earners who retire early from their 60 hour per week job? By your logic, someone else has to put in 60 hours a week make "cover-up" for it!

I propose a law to stop people from retiring, all must work as hard as they can till they die so that our HDB can forever increase in value.

I think in generally it's always the same, if the freegan or even beggar is the steady type then of course we can empathize with his actions but if he is the lazy leech on the system bluff people sympathy kind then yeah he is definitely an a**hole..

nothing wrong with working lesser. Just do not expect the same level of material wealth or enjoyment as someone who works more or harder.

Going freegan to save more money to travel 5-6 times a year is not consumption?

Travelling is and has always been a luxury whether you back pack or travel in style.

I am not unhappy. His life, his choice.

He can choose what he wants to do with his life but do not expect everyone to worship him as a hero or to give him any handouts just so that he can go on holiday 5-6 times a year.

High income earner who retire from their 60hr work week would have accumulated a nice retirement fund so that he/she can enjoy their retirement in comfort and do all the things he/she may have sacrificed during his/her productive years.

I myself cannot even find the time to go travel 1 X a year.

Maybe you find him hypocritical for doing large numbers of overseas trips (which are wasteful of resources and carbon intensive) when his other behaviours is supposed to do good by reducing waste and consumption.

Anyway I do hope that everyone can follow some aspects of reducing consumption, for our planet to have some breathing room.

Economic growth built on endless mindless human consumption and pursue of material wants is also a long-term dead end.
