  1. SINGAPORE - A stretch of yellow-barreled rails over 20m in length was recently installed along the road shoulder of the slip road leading to the start of the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) towards Woodlands. The rails resemble the rolling barrier system, a road safety feature, seen in several countries including Malaysia, Australia and the United States. Singapore Road Safety Council chairman Bernard Tay told The Straits Times the new guardrails are better at absorbing the impact from a vehicle crash. "It behaves like a shock absorber," said Mr Tay. "Unlike conventional metal barriers, this system absorbs the (crash) impact and deflects it, making it safer for the driver and reduces the likelihood of a vehicle crashing through the barrier." ST understands the system is new here. It is being tested by the Land Transport Authority which will soon be giving details about it. A close inspection of the "barrels" with reflective markers reveal they were manufactured by a South Korean company called Evolution in Traffic Innovation (ETI) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXVUAR5kjOA So how does the rolling barrier system work? When a vehicle hits the guardrail, the rotating barrels convert the shockwaves to rotational energy. The railway-type rails in the system also absorb the shockwaves while simultaneously guiding the accident vehicle away from the impact zone. In theory, this helps prevent unwanted rear-end collisions. The size and speed of a vehicle may affect the performance of the safety barrier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdPmlriLSkQ The latest road safety technology, however, does not come cheap. The cost of installing 1m of the Roller System is reported to range between US$300 (S$414) and US$400 (S$553). But the cost of maintaining the guardrails apparently will be low as only damaged parts need to be replaced following a crash. In Mr Tay's view, the price is a small one to pay. "It's a good thing that LTA is making an effort to put in new innovation," he said. "Hopefully it (the rolling barrier system) saves more lives and reduces the injury to motorists."

  3. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/nea-clarifies-rules-for-car-emission-scheme National Environment Agency said yesterday petrol models with port fuel injection - where fuel is injected just before the engine's combustion chamber - will not be measured for particulate matter (fine soot). The exemption will apply when the Euro 6 emission standard kicks in in September and when the Vehicular Emissions Scheme starts in January. **** first it was the hoo ha on CAT A and 130 bhp because the dealers got no cars that could compete with turbo charge cars and claim unfair practice. Now, its the lack of ability in terms of port injection and cry foul on Port injection. When will the dealers own up and say we suck on building cars and face the facts and not blame other better cars out there

  10. These products have been in the market for almost a year but only available to professional groomers only..Why not let DIY users have a chance to try since some of the detailers are quite pro..I decided to start retailing this coating to fellow DIY users..This OptiCoat is not spray on type of coating..This Opticoat can be removed with some hard machine polishing compound so dun worry if wrong application will damage your paint..With this coating underneath..You can still DIY with some of your favorite waxes or sealant or even AIOs... It has been a while since I last stop my FL detailing..I decided to do this test to see how OptiCoat can last in our tropical weather.. Surface used..4 years old Citroen Berlingo..Condition is quite bad..decided not to do a wet sand as time is quite consuming..oxidation and water marks are main issue..I dun expect a 100% removal.. Machine used- Makita 9227C and Flex polishing pads - Lake country purple wool and orange/white pads.. Products Used - Since I am still waiting for my Optimum Professional polish..I took some Merzerna Power Gloss and Intensive polish 91 and 85..Optimum Poli-seal..Optimum Power clean..70% IPA ..Optimum No Rinse and the main dish Optimum Opti-Coat Here are some pics.. condition of the surface before polish..
  11. Sent car to AD for servicing. Battery tested 78% and AD suggested I change. How long more can the battery tahan? Can go for another 6 months or not? My battery already passed 42 months and I got nearly 36 months to scrap.

  13. From CNA: SYDNEY: Australian nuclear inspectors on Tuesday said they were to examine a shipment of cars arriving from tsunami-hit Japan following fears a number of the vehicles might be contaminated with radiation. ARPANSA, Australia's nuclear safety agency, said it would board the cargo ship Trans Future 7 when it docked south of Sydney on Thursday after a request from port workers. "This inspection is being made to reassure stevedores after concerns from the Maritime Union of Australia that as 30 of the cars are used vehicles they may possibly have originated from the tsunami and nuclear affected areas," an ARPANSA spokesman told AFP. "These concerns have arisen after the discovery of low levels of radioactivity in cars recently shipped from Yokohama (to Chile)." The 800-car shipment was being tested "simply as a precaution," the spokesman added. "ARPANSA advises that the risk to health of people handling mail, containers or cargo arriving from the affected areas in Japan is assessed as very low," he said. Australian new car sales slumped 14.5 per cent year-on-year in May due to "delays in delivery of Japanese manufactured vehicles" associated with the March quake and tsunami in Japan, according to the statistics bureau. Japan is Australia's major automotive supplier, accounting for some 33 per cent of car and parts imports. -AFP/wk
  14. Finally Dvvt-i came to Singapore new Altis spec looks quite attractive Price is $83k, a bit no $$ to buy in this price but want to feel the Dvvt-i , heard Dealer hate those who test driving but don buy
  15. Recently checking with 3 colleagues and was shock that they only tested once when they bought their current car (first). When decided to buy then test, then latter realised it is under power. Even see see doesn't mean u understand the car. For me, even if there is not particular car in mind, I will still go for a test ride, especially if it is a new model. It is a good overview of whats current market can offer, and to avoid disappointment with the purchase. It is good to have some test ride b4 1 decide to sign on the dotted line, I have been hearing bro regret with their purchase. So ppl think it is cheating if test already don't buy, feel like it's the comsumer is the victim most of the time.

  18. [thumbsup] Three thumbs up. Tonight went to a special invite for the Skoda Octavia launch. The evening was excellently held like the Skoda Superb launch just a few months back. The car is beautifully redesigned headlamps must be seen in real life as photos somehow did not capture the exact emotion when you see it real life. The equipment as been updated with better materials and higher quality feel. Many small touches here and there that any driver will appreciate. The Test DRIVE - wow this is the part that I was looking forward to the evening. The DRIVE, it is something a driver has to experience themselves. The pure power under tap, the smooth gear shifts, the acceleration pull keeps you in your seat till it reaches 3rd gear or something (sorry was too excited to take note :) ) The brakes were responsive and does it work immediately when you step on it. The wind noise was not audible even at 70km/h for the brief acceleration pull. The ride felt hard but not uncomfortable to the driver or backseat passenger. Corners were taken in with confidence. You have test drive it yourself! There is a smile on my face tonight. :)
  19. Today went to show room to test these 2 cars. I found that Kia forte and Avante both got weaker pick compare to my 1.5A Vios. The Avante steering wheel is so loose even when the speed goes up to 80. The SE told me its electric steering? Tested Vios and Impreza later and the sterring wheel is stiff and good. Anyone drving a Avante also feel the same looseness?
  20. Not sure if anyone has posted this. I tested ICA automated primary clearance this morning at Woodlands checkpoint, lane 9. There 3 criteria to meet in order to use this service: 1. Singapore citizen 2. Singapore PR 3. Only 1 person in car (driver himself of course) The procedure goes something like this: 1. drive your car to the lane | counter 9 (first lane on right most side, farthest from Motorcycle lane) 2. before first barrier, insert first | last page with the barcode facing down into the slot 3. wait for the screen to prompt process to next step when the 1st barrier lifts 4. scan your right or left thumb print at the counter, at the same time, an ICA officer inside the counter will check whether if you are really traveling alone and issue you the small memo 5. when thumb print pass, 2nd barrier will lift and you are good to go The whole process took me less than 30 second with both steps performed without any glitch. I know for fact that this system has been implemented on pedestrians | bus patrons and motorcyclist with special frequent travelers card or biometric SG passport, I am surprised that it even works on MY passport (PR can use this system also)?

  22. I just test drove today. Its really quite responsive for a 1.4L engine. High rpm. I guest thats why the responsiveness. Low gear ratio to increase the torque. Other things are quite standard. Nothing much to expect from cars of this category. Recommended service : 1st 10k, 30k, 50k... Service at 10k free. Service at 30k $150 Service at 50k $ did not ask. The recommended service interval is every 20k.
  23. Was at our newly opened Merc Centre in Singapore, and decided to see if there's a difference bet the new E280 and my current E200 Kompressor. The E280 uses the new M272 3L engine producing 231 bhp compared to 163bhp of the E200K. Overall impression is very nice. The E280's power delivery is smoother and across the entire rev band, i.e. great for quick acceleration, slow down, and accelerate again round corners. The new V6 is very easy to rev and very responsive (the sales lady was looking kind of worried as I attacked the infamous stretch of "99" corners - she later told me they were advised NOT to bring customers there - but how else to really test the car?) Anyway, she cut me some slack as I'm evidently familiar with the E Class. In comparison, the E200K's real power comes on after 2500 rpm, when the Kompressor spools up to max 240Nm torque. It gives a bit of rush when we hit it, but when going round corners after corners, it may not have enough to spool up. Overall, happy with the E280. But I think the E200K held its own quite well (less difference when cruising on highway - more difference when attacking simultaneous corners) The difference is there bet the 2, but it's not so great that makes me feel like trashing the E200K immediately! Think I'll hold on till at least after face lift, or even next model change.
  24. Ok guys..thanks for all the help on my previous thread, so I guess I should write a bit here after testing the Optra yesterday But before that, I actually went to C&C to test the Lancer. Interior wise I didn't like the protruded out panels. Driving-wise it's more noisy than I like and I am not use to the "transmission-less" technology. Without hearing the changing of transmission, I can't get the feeling it's picking up. Maybe I am just not use to it. But I like the turning radious...very small...only 4.9m After that I went to StarAuto for the Optra. Interior-wise, it's very luxury...but I didn't like the wooden trimmings. Unfortunately they don't have a black/gray interior. Yellow interior will need a lot of polishing, if not, black stains will settle on the leather. Changing the wooden trimmings to silver may not match the interior...so I guess I will just leave it as it is. Driving-wise it's very quiet. Pick-up from start wasn't that bad although it's a heavy car (I rev quite a lot) . Engine is still a bit coarse compared to the Civic, but better than the Lancer. Road handling is superb and doesn't lose to the Ford Focus. The brake on the test car is a bit soft, but I believe that can be tuned. The surround sound wasn't too bad, but bass a bit high which can be tuned of course. Overall, an excellent car for the price. It's interior matches more of a 2.0L car, very luxury and the engine sounds like one too. Has a very very conti feel to it. I donno how they can actually sell this car at such a price. Conclusion overall? I bought one on the spot. It's a Denim Blue one. Gold is too "uncle" for me....and black will need some polishing work to retain the shine. Only regrets is that they don't have a black/gray interior. What a waste. Wish the interior is like this:
