  2. Conservation at work. Total banned areas now total 18. It is to prevent parking and traffic problems from worsening. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/no-new-eating-houses-at/1409976.html SINGAPORE: The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has named seven new locations where additional eating houses will not be allowed to be set up so as to prevent the existing parking and traffic problems in the areas from worsening. This brings the number of places where new eating houses will not be approved to 18. The new sites deemed to be problematic traffic areas are: Changi Road, which include Jalan Eunos / Still Road to Jalan Kembangan and Frankel Avenue Upper Paya Lebar Road from Lorong Ah Soo to Paya Lebar Crescent Bukit Timah Road, at Wilby Road to Elm Avenue and Anamalai Avenue to Fourth Avenue Sembawang Road - from Mandai Road to Transit Road Kampong Bahru Road to Sporttiswoode Park Road Kampong Glam Jalan Riang in the Braddell Heights area. The URA said it has worked with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to assess the existing traffic and parking situations as part of their periodic reviews. The agencies also took into account the concerns of residents, as well as existing tenants who want a balance of businesses in the area. Mr Saeid Labbafi, chairman of the Kampong Glam Association, said: "What the Kampong Glam retailers wish to see is a balance between the businesses. We do know that this place is place targeted for conservation, one of the historical places in Singapore. The more time passes, the more the place becomes unique because of its rarity in the area and because of its cultures, and all this thanks to lot of help from the government. We wish to see a balance of the businesses here." For proposed eating areas outside the existing list where food establishments can no longer be set up, URA said it will evaluate them with the LTA, for consideration of approval under its planning guidelines.
  3. The existing bus priority measures, such as bus lanes and Mandatory Give Way to Buses (MGWTB), will be extended to more locations island-wide. From mid-October, there will be another 25 kilometres of bus lanes -- with Kampong Bahru Road, Lorong 6 Toa Payoh and Orchard Boulevard among the first new stretches. Currently, there are 23 kilometres of full-day bus lanes, and 155 kilometres of normal bus lanes. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said with the completion of new bus lanes by end-2013, there will be about 200 kilometres of bus lanes island-wide. From November, the Mandatory Give Way to Buses scheme will be implemented at another 135 bus bays. When completed by end-2014, about 300 bus stops will be covered under the scheme. LTA said the expansion of the bus priority measures are aimed at improving overall reliability and speeds of buses, so that commuters can experience more regular waiting times. It will also complement the ongoing Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP), where additional buses will be added. LTA said by improving bus reliability, it will help shorten overall bus journey time and make public transport more attractive. 7. Yes they can but buyers must be prepared to pay "market" rates... From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Online...ory_702736.html Build ECs at prime locations I WAS heartened to hear of the raising of the income ceiling for build-to-order (BTO) flats as well as for executive condominiums or ECs ("HDB raises income ceiling to $10,000"; Monday). However, when I checked the locations of the new ECs, I was rather disappointed. New ECs are usually in outlying, suburban areas such as Sengkang, Yishun and Tampines, while prime sites in Serangoon, Clementi and Bishan are saved for private condominiums. Since the beginning of last year, 13 condominium sites have been sold, out of which five sites are in prime areas such as Hougang, Bishan and Kallang. For the same time frame, 11 sites for ECs have been sold and all the areas are in outlying areas. Given that the Urban Redevelopment Authority and the Singapore Land Authority conduct land sales for private residential areas and most of such land are in central locations, shouldn't more central HDB sites be saved for ECs as well? 13. Leak on mobile camera locations? It's fine with us, say Traffic Police HAS there been a leak about where the police are likely to set up mobile speed cameras? An e-mail message has been going around, warning motorists about certain roads. But the Traffic Police feel that's not such a bad thing, if it makes drivers more careful. The e-mail lists 11 locations, two of them as 'verified'. It was not known who 'verified' this or how. As these cameras are portable, they can be set up on any road. They are supported by a tripod stand and can easily be hidden from view as they are not bulky. A policeman standing anywhere along the road can operate the equipment by himself. Using laser technology, the cameras detect speeding vehicles and capture images of the vehicle. Police spokesman ASP Victor Keong would not say if the list was authentic. But it does help, as drivers would observe the speed limit on the roads they think have mobile speed cameras, said the Traffic Police. The commander of the Traffic Police, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Teo Kian Teck, said: 'That (sharing of information) itself is an indication of our enforcement impact. Traffic Police cannot stop them from sharing such information. 'If that sharing leads to better driving behaviour, we are totally fine with that. Ultimately, our aim is not to catch people but to deter them from speeding. We hope motorists will realise that speeding kills and that their time on the roads will be better spent being mindful of others rather than being focused on avoiding detection.' The Traffic Police have stepped up enforcement in the last two years. Last year, 130,385 traffic summonses were issued to motorists, compared with 106,903 in 2002. These were for offences like beating the red light and speeding. MORE SPEEDING TICKETS From January to March this year, 13,173 speeding tickets were issued, 3,271 more than in the first quarter of last year. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Teo said: 'We want to ensure greater compliance from motorists in their driving behaviour. The Traffic Police would like to send a strong message to road users that we are continually on the lookout for serious violators. We will not hesitate to (take enforcement action) against them and pedestrians too, as all road users need to be made aware of their actions on the roads. Their actions affect not only their own safety, but that of others. All play a part in road safety.' Hidden eyes - believe it or not Upper Serangoon Road, 9 to 11am ('verified') Farrer Road/Adam Road, 10am onwards East Coast Parkway after Bayshore exit, after 5pm Bartley Underpass Braddell Road, near the long pedestrian bridge near Singapore Press Holdings West Coast Highway, before the new McDonald's Tampines Expressway in both directions under the Tampines Flyover ('verified') Tampines Avenue 10 Along Jalan Boon Lay from Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), towards Jurong Point at the junction of Chin Bee Drive Clementi Avenue 6 from Pan Island Expressway to AYE, just before entering the underpass at the traffic light junction of Clementi Loop Road along Orchid Country Club.
