  5. Maybe its good for local tourism? or floodgate to overcrowding? SINGAPORE: From next month, the validity of the Multiple Journey Visas (MJVs) issued to nationals from the People’s Republic of China can be extended up to a maximum of 10 years. In a press release on Friday (May 15), the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the same facility will also be extended to their spouse and children below the age of 21, if the main applicant is eligible. Chinese nationals with a valid MJV need not apply for a visa each time they visit Singapore. The move will provide greater convenience for Chinese nationals, especially business travellers, who travel often to Singapore, said ICA. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) welcomed the move and said this will make it easier for tourists from China to visit Singapore, and enhance STB's efforts to increase visitor arrival and tourism spending. Eligible applicants will also be able to use the automated immigration clearance at Singapore’s checkpoints, said ICA, adding that more details will be announced at a later date. - CNA/fs
  6. Digital music distribution is making music less expensive and more widely available, but it is also slowly killing the album cover as an art form. To pay homage to this vanishing art form, Aptitude, a web design company, created a fun series of images that imagine what the covers of some of our favorite albums might have looked like if they were expanded a bit. “Album cover art used to be meticulously created to portray some kind of message that the band or artist was trying to convey,” explain Aptitude. “But in this digital age, buying an album has become less about buying a physical package to buying a digital version out of convenience.” Lol at them .. what do Beavers fans think of this?.. and the most famous of all.. haha.. look at signboard
  7. My bro bought a computer from Harvey Norman's about a year ago and purchased the extended warranty. Recently, his computer broke down and he went on Sunday to Harvey Norman's outset at Funan to make full use of the extended warranty since it was still valid. There, the sales person (I was there) told him to just call the number from monday to Friday and then go to the service centre. No, they do not do the servicing at the outlet, no they cannot let him leave the lap top at the store and fo them to send it to the store on his behalf and no, the service centre is open only from monday to friday. My bro was freaking mad because he was only free on Sunday and he did not mind if there were delays if for example they said something like they can despatch the lapop but there will be delays because they can despatch only on Mondays..... or something. A complaint was lodged to Harvy Norman''s and the only thing the person told him when he replied was "Company's policy". The extended warranty is not cheap and with such poor service, I think I should inform the bros here that while Harvey Norman's products might be good, do not be taken in by their extended warranty in the hope that they will assist you when you need help, because they will not.
  8. The existing bus priority measures, such as bus lanes and Mandatory Give Way to Buses (MGWTB), will be extended to more locations island-wide. From mid-October, there will be another 25 kilometres of bus lanes -- with Kampong Bahru Road, Lorong 6 Toa Payoh and Orchard Boulevard among the first new stretches. Currently, there are 23 kilometres of full-day bus lanes, and 155 kilometres of normal bus lanes. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said with the completion of new bus lanes by end-2013, there will be about 200 kilometres of bus lanes island-wide. From November, the Mandatory Give Way to Buses scheme will be implemented at another 135 bus bays. When completed by end-2014, about 300 bus stops will be covered under the scheme. LTA said the expansion of the bus priority measures are aimed at improving overall reliability and speeds of buses, so that commuters can experience more regular waiting times. It will also complement the ongoing Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP), where additional buses will be added. LTA said by improving bus reliability, it will help shorten overall bus journey time and make public transport more attractive. 10. To ensure faster bus journeys, a scheme that makes it compulsory for motorists to give way to buses moving out from bus bays will be expanded to 150 more bus stops islandwide. This extension, announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim on Sunday, will boost the number of stops on the scheme by over 70 per cent, from the existing 203. Bus bays in the scheme, started in December 2008, are marked with a large box in yellow and an arrow indicating the direction of exiting buses. Motorists who fail to give way will be fined $130. Areas where the scheme will be extended to include Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, Bedok Reservoir Road and Mountbatten Road. In all, there are more than 2,000 bus stops with bus bays islandwide. 11. SINGAPORE: Singapore has agreed on a deal with Formula One to extend the country's grand prix contract for another five years until 2017, following months of hard bargaining for cheaper fees. No price tag for the new deal to 2017 was revealed, but Formula One commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone said repeatedly that the Singapore government had proven tough negotiators. "It was difficult for me to negotiate," said Ecclestone, sitting next to Singapore's Second Minister for Trade and Industry S. Iswaran for the announcement ahead of Sunday's grand prix. Mr Iswaran is also a Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs. "He's not easy to deal with and I can't understand why he was complaining about us using the streets and wearing out the streets," he joked. "But we eventually got there and I'm very, very happy. We're all here for another five years." High costs have caused friction for several hosts of Formula One, which has expanded aggressively from its traditional European domain with seven races in the Asia-Pacific region this season. Singapore is also one of several grand prix hosts to complain about the high race fees it pays to Formula One. When pressed by journalists on whether Singapore had won a cheaper deal, Ecclestone was coy. "I always believe these questions shouldn't be asked," he said, when pressed on the contract's price-tag. "A gentleman should never speak about money and last night." Ecclestone added: "Let me tell you how serious the minister is: you'll be paying for your seat on the way out." The Singapore race, one of seven held in the Asia-Pacific region this year, has been watched by more than 360 million TV viewers, according to government figures, and won universal praise from teams and drivers this week. "This is the fifth Singapore Grand Prix and it's already a great grand prix, great atmosphere, great city," McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said earlier on Saturday. The Singapore race was first held in 2008 on the Marina Bay street circuit and has become a social highlight of the Formula One calendar that rivals Monaco and Abu Dhabi as a draw for dealmakers and corporate heavy-hitters. According to Mr Iswaran, the race has attracted more than 150,000 visitors spending over S$560m in the past four years. Mr Iswaran said: "From an economic perspective, the F1 Singapore Grand Prix has attracted more than 150,000 international visitors over the last four years, and about S$140m to S$150m in incremental tourism receipts each year. For the extended term, we expect benefits to remain at least at this level." With the cost of organising each race pegged at about S$150m - the government co-funds 60 per cent of the bill - Mr Iswaran stressed that the government would like to reduce costs through factors such as infrastructure, operational efficiencies in race organisation and revised terms with the race promoter and Formula One Administration. While some tweaks could be made to the current Marina Bay Circuit, there are currently no plans to make significant changes to the 5.073km track. Formula One's hefty race fees have long been a problem for hosts. In 2008, Chinese Grand Prix organisers told AFP they were prepared to walk away from Formula One, before later extending their deal. The Australian Grand Prix has been the subject of controversy with estimates that it costs local taxpayers A$50 million to stage. - AFP/CNA/xq/ir http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1227472/1/.html
  12. Smokers will have even fewer places to light up, with the smoking ban extended to common corridors, void decks and staircases of residential buildings. Other new no-smoking zones include sheltered walkways, overhead bridges and outdoor hospital compounds. The change kicks in in the coming year. At bus stops, the change means those who want to light up must stay outside a 5m radius around bus shelters. Selected parks and town centres could be next, as the authorities make them part of a pilot project to introduce no- smoking zones. ------------------ The smoking ban will soon be extended to more public areas in Singapore. These include common corridors, void decks and staircases within residential buildings, sheltered walkways and overhead bridges and outdoor hospital compounds. Smoking will also be prohibited within a five metre radius around bus shelters. Implementation details of the smoking prohibition will be refined in consultation with the community and building owners. Announcing this in Parliament, Senior Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources, Grace Fu, said the long term goal is to prohibit smoking in all public places, except designated smoking areas. Ms Fu said she also hopes more hawker centres will make the move to make their premises smoke-free. She added that the ministry will also consider extending the smoking ban to selected parks and town areas. MP for Nee Soon GRC, Lee Bee Wah, had earlier called for better enforcement of the smoking ban. Dr Lee said: "Another thing which can sour a person's daily experience is the exposure to second-hand cigarette smoke. While there is currently a smoking prohibition for some places, public spaces such as linkways, overhead bridges and parks do not have such restrictions. Having laws is one thing, but having it enforced is (another)." In response, Ms Fu said: "Community engagement and individual responsibility are key to successful implementation as there is a limit to the resources we can commit to enforcing a wider smoking prohibition. "Going forward, with more areas gazetted as non-smoking, we will need clearer demarcation of areas where smoking is allowed, with everyone playing their part to observe the rules. Our aim, in collaboration with the Health Promotion Board, is to work towards a future where Singaporeans consider smoking not only detrimental to health, but also socially unacceptable." source: http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC12...re-public-areas source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_774749.html

  14. Hi all, Would like to find out if anyone knows where to custom-make extended lug bolts (not nuts)? I know there are readily available ones on the market, but may not necessarily be a good fit for all vehicles. Thanks in advance!
  15. Hi guys, Just sent my car for servicing and i was told i can extend my car's warranty for two years at the price of $888 up to 5 years. My car is a Mazda 3, should i go extend it or just ignore it? Some people say 5 years hard to break down, waste money only... What you guys think?
  16. My ride is coming to 3 years, and that also means the 3 years warranty will expire. I was offered a 2 years warranty extension at $1188. I'm seriously contemplating taking up the offer, and keeping the car for another 2 years. Only catch is for the warranty to be effected, all servicing must be done at the AD workshop. Anyone sign up for extended warranty and think it's worth the $$?
  17. Dear all, I called Starhub to check on the Digital Voice about their expiry for free local calls promotion and was told they extended it to 31 Dec 2008. 18. hi any brother can advise me what is the weblink for the company that provide insurance for extended warranty.
  19. Went for 60K servicing yesterday at BM and as I was collecting my vehicle after servicing, was issued with a servicing chit indicating that in order to enjoy the extended warranty for another 2 years, I have to come back to them for servicing every 10,000 km or 6 mths. If not, they will not warranty the parts during the extended warranty. When I bought the extended warranty (Toyota Shield, paid $500+) in 2006, was not told of regular servicing at AD to enjoy the extended warranty period. Now its seem that I have to stick to them for another 2 years. I wrote this because I have to change my front disc brake pads next servicing and was informed that it will cost $345+ at BM for a pair (4 brake pads). I could have got it much cheaper outside. So, should I change my front pair brake pad at outside workshop?
  20. Had a very unpleasant experience today with the ADs. Bought a 2nd hand car 3months ago. It is having 5years of AD warranty. So to play safe before buying the car, I went with the 2nd hand dealer to the AD for servicing and complain that the brakes were noisy. Had an agreement with the 2nd hand dealer that if anything wrong they have to pay before i accept the car. After the servicing, it was stated that everything is ok, the brakes are fine and the brakes is "like that one". I thought since its from a reputable AD, okie I took it. 3 months later, the brakes noise gets louder, went to the service center again. This time, the advisor was saying, oh... your rotor disc is very rough thats why there is this noise and its classified as wear and tear parts. They advise to resurface and polish it up and needs to be charged $300 bucks. Then I was annoyed, ask them how can rotor disc considered as wear and tear? If its brake pad, ok I accept it, but not Rotor Disc? The advisor immediately say ok charge $180 will do. So lan lan ask them to do it first., Immediately, I wrote an email in and immediately the manager called me within 2 hrs, still telling me its a wear and tear item due to sand or particles went in and cause it to be rough, all the Craps. Sibei hot liao, than ask he why it was not discovered 3 months ago when I have already complained about it? He than lan lan, tell me okie, why not another 50% discount. $80plus. Haiz, since the manager also working for the company, I gave in and said okie. In the end, I ask the manager, when companies stated Extended warranty 5 years, engine etc, but exclude wear and tear items, how they define clearly what is wear and tear? He say oh definitely the engine will be under warranty. But I ask him if a person always ram and play his car for 4 years and before the warranty ends, the engine died, is it covered? He say "No, as its considered as wear and tear". Than I told him in this case its difficult to justify rite? In the end comes the favourite phase, warranty is' like that one' But I have to give credit to the AD staff for their service and promptness. Its only that the warranty terms is not clearly defined especially for 5years term.
  21. Mandatory Give Way to Buses Scheme Extended to Four Bus Bays 1. From 27 June 2009, the LTA will introduce the Mandatory Give Way to Buses Scheme to four bus bays in the Choa Chu Kang area. 2. These bus bays are located along Choa Chu Kang Road (opposite the Phoenix LRT Station and Blk 26) and along Choa Chu Kang Drive (opposite Blk 209). They are the first bus bays to be added to since the scheme was piloted in December of last year at 22 bus bays along Bukit Batok East Avenue 3, Toh Tuck Road and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8. 3. LTA's ongoing review of bus bays island-wide will identify more locations that are well suited to this scheme. As this scheme extends, more bus commuters can benefit from the faster travel time. 4. Prior to implementation, banners will be put up along Chua Chu Kang Drive and Chua Chu Kang Road to remind motorists they need to give way to buses exiting bus bays. Result of Pilot 5. Results from the pilot showed that the scheme is effective in reducing the amount of time buses spend trying to get out of bus bays. This in turn has improved overall bus speeds. Buses are now able to exit the bus bays faster with a time reduction of up to 73% in some cases. Bus journey times have also improved by up to 7%. 6. The Mandatory Give Way to Buses Scheme is one of a series of measures LTA is implementing to improve the speed and reliability of bus services under the Land Transport Master Plan announced in 2008. In December 2008, LTA completed the expansion of the bus lane scheme, increasing the coverage of full day bus lanes from 7.6km to 23km and normal bus lanes from 120km to 155km. 7. Please refer to Annex A for the locations of the new bus bays.
  22. anyone confrim? This is due to H1NI and many students back from overseas holidays.
  23. FROM January 1, smokers will have to stub out in all hotel lobbies and 5 metres away from all entrances and exits of buildings. The smoking ban will also cover almost all indoor places, with the inclusion of non-air-conditioned premises like lift lobbies, markets, multi-storey and basement carparks. Smoking will also be banned in outdoor areas like playgrounds and exercise areas. The National Environment Agency (NEA) on Friday said it is widening the list of smoke-free places to keep the air cleaner and further protect the public from the harmful health effects of second-hand smoke. The move is also in line with the World Health Organisation recommendations. 'The ban has been extended to indoor public places and lift lobbies because these are areas where public would find it hard to escape from second-hand smoke,' said the NEA. 'Entrances and exits to buildings and facilities where smoking is already prohibited were also included in the ban extension because feedback and checks on the ground have shown that smokers tend to congregate near these areas to smoke.' Second-hand smoke, also known as 'environmental tobacco smoke or passive smoking', kills and scientific evidence shows that there is no safe level of exposure. It can cause serious medical conditions including lung cancer, heart disease, asthma attacks, childhood respiratory disease, sudden infant death syndrom and reduced lung function. Mr Lee Yuen Hee, Chief Executive Officer of the NEA, said on Friday: 'We are encouraged by the positive feedback from many individuals and families who support the extension of the smoking ban and appreciate the effort of smokers who have chosen not to light up in smoke-free areas, helping to promote clean air and good health.' The NEA will be rolling out a series of publicity activities to inform the public of the extended ban. It has also conducted meetings and dialogues with various parties and will work with building and facilities managers to ensure smooth implementation of the ban.
  24. I believe many of the folks in MCF are white-collar employees working in an office. The typical working time is from 8:30am-5:45pm. That's also the operating hours of a typical car workshop. Once in a while when the car develops a problem, it is quite impossible to drive the car to the workshop during office hours. After office hours, most workshops would have been closed. Does anyone know of any good workshop which operates beyond normal office hours? Take for example, my clutch had a problem this evening and I could hardly find a workshop at ~7pm.
  25. my toyota altis 3 year warranty already finished. I did not take the extended warranty before the expiry because I thought to change new car but now decided to keep another 2-3 years. Is it wise to get the extended warranty? I am trying to talk to the customer service if i can get it now for a premium. I think is about S$1K ++. My mileage now is about 79,000 KM. Since I got a scare of my VVTI gear issue, i am thinking for the warranty. Thai Tom Yum car really fragile leh.
