2 HOURS 3 MIN AGO SINGAPORE - The Media Development Authority (MDA) has directed SingNet Pte Ltd (SingNet) to cross-carry the Barclays Premier League "live" matches over the next three seasons, starting from the 2013-14 season. Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) had announced back in Oct 2012 that it had acquired non-exclusive broadcast rights to all BPL "live" games for the next three seasons from Aug 2013 from the Football Association Premier League Limited (FAPL) for Mio TV, its subscription TV platform. However, after studying the agreement between SingTel and FAPL, the MDA found that it contained certain clauses that can prevent or restrict the same content from being acquired for transmission by other pay-TV retailers in Singapore. The MDA said that it would not be disclosing further details of these restrictions. What is clear, however, is that the restrictions trigger the Cross-Carriage Measure. According to this measure, which kicked in on Aug 1 2011, pay-TV retailers who have acquired any exclusive content on or after March 12, 2010, must widen the distribution of such content by offering it to subscribers of other pay-TV retailers. As such, SingNet must now begin the process of enabling the cross-carriage of the BPL programme on rival pay-TV retailer StarHub's platform. When contacted, StarHub welcomed the latest development. Said Jeannie Ong, its Head of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations in a statement: "We welcome the decision of the Media Development Authority (MDA) to make the Barclays Premier League (BPL) subject to the cross-carriage measure. "Singapore viewers are the biggest beneficiaries of this decision and we are excited to be able to bring the BPL to our customers on our reliable network once again." The telco, which announced last month that it was finally able to open negotiations with the FAPL, five months after SingTel's announcement in Oct 2012, added that "in light of MDA's decision, there is no longer a necessity for us to acquire the broadcast rights directly from FAPL." SingTel, however, expressed its disappointment at the decision, and said that it would be making an appeal. Said Allen Lew, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Telecommunications for its 'Digital L!fe' division in a statement: "We are gravely disappointed with MDA's decision requiring SingNet to cross carry BPL content as it disadvantages both the consumers and the industry. "We fully intend to appeal this decision and seek legal recourse if necessary. We assure football fans that we will fight hard so they can continue to enjoy the content that they love at reasonable prices." He warned too that football fans who want to watch the BPL on its own, without subscribing to Mio TV, will probably have to pay "significantly higher fees". "We will ensure that existing SingTel customers who are on contracts will not be affected," he said. "However, those who wish to watch BPL on its own will most likely have to pay significantly higher monthly fees. "This is because it will become untenable for SingTel to subsidise the cost of BPL for such customers." http://www.todayonline.com/sports/mda-orde...-league-matches

Hyundai has begun accepting orders for the all-new redesigned Accent in its home market of South Korea today, ahead of its official sales launch on November 1st. For the new generation, Hyundai is bringing back the Accent nameplate for the Korean market after having supplanted it with the Verna moniker since 1999. Hyundai is marketing the new Accent as a "premium compact" sedan, and is packing an expansive list of amenities and technologies to back such an audacious claim. For one, the Accent is the first in its class to bring six airbags standard across the range. Active front headrests and rear parking assist are also standard equipment in the new Accent. Also available is Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), or Hyundai's way of calling electronic stability control. The highlight of the new Hyundai Accent, however, is found under the hood where an all-new 1.6-liter GDI Gamma four-cylinder engine resides. It produces a class-leading 140 PS (138 horsepower) and 122 lbs.ft of torque, and achieves equally segment-topping fuel economy figures of 16.7 km/L (40 US MPG) thanks to a 6-speed automatic transmission mated to the engine. A smaller 1.4L MPI Gamma four-cylinder engine is also available. The new Accent also boasts the largest interior room in its class, thanks to increased dimensions in all aspects (4370mm length x 1700m width x 1455mm height). The wheelbase has also augmented by 70mm from its predecessor to 2570mm.

CHEVROLET cabs will join an increasingly bewildering array of taxi models on the road soon. Transport group SMRT Corp, the third biggest taxi operator here, has ordered 2,000 Chevrolet Tosca sedans from Chevy agent Alpine Motors. The Tosca is a Korean domestic name for the Epica - a popular Chevrolet executive sedan here. The taxi variant is a 2-litre turbodiesel vehicle with a six-speed automatic transmission. Alpine managing director Albert Pang said the 2,000 Chevy taxis will be delivered by 2012, and that SMRT has signed an option for more after that. The first ones will be delivered in the first quarter of next year. 'This deal took over two years to put together,' Mr Pang said, adding that 'a few other taxi companies have talked to us', but the Chevy cabs are only for SMRT for now. He would not disclose the price of the vehicle, but The Straits Times understands the Korean-made American model is close to what a Hyundai Sonata cab was priced at - about $50,000 without a Certificate Of Entitlement. SMRT was displaced recently as the second biggest cab operator here, after being overtaken by newcomer Trans-Cab. It has about 2,600 taxis on the road, compared with Trans-Cab's 4,000. At its second-quarter financial results announcement last week, the company said it would renew its ageing fleet and increase its number of vehicles. SMRT is known for its eclectic mix of taxis, which include Ssangyong, Chrysler, Mercedes and London cabs. Its taxi business has been making either losses or very modest profits in the last decade. For the quarter ended Sept 30, it posted an operating profit before taxes of $374,000 - down from $773,000 in the previous corresponding period. Including the Chevy, there are now 35 models of taxis here - nearly three times the variety five years ago. And 10 years ago, there were only a handful, with Toyota's Crown and Nissan's Cedric dominating the scene. But when the stricter Euro IV emission standard was implemented four years ago, the two Japanese stalwarts fell off the scene because they did not have variants that could meet Euro IV. Hence, the influx of new cabs. New models have included models from Honda, Volkswagen, Skoda and even China's Chery. And last year, Prime Taxis, the newest cab company here, started using petrol-electric hybrid cabs. Renault agent Wearnes Automotive has also been in talks with cab companies to supply vehicles. Despite the wide array of taxi types, the Land Transport Authority said there should be no risk of commuters wanting to flag one down mistaking them for ordinary cars.

Today in the German GP, we have a repeat of Austria where we have another Brazilian who had to cede 1st place to his team mate. This really spoils the day on F1 yet again.

The all-new BMW 5 Series has exceeded its maker's own sales forecasts by a mile, according to a report by Bloomberg. Unveiled in November last year, the F10 5-Series was launched in Europe this past March and is apparently selling like the proverbial hot cakes. After losing money in 2009 the world's biggest maker of premium cars aims to improve its lot considerably in 2010. Cars like the X1 and 5-Series will help it achieve its target operating margin in the "lower one-digit percentage range." CEO Norbert Reithofer said his team is pushing for at least 1.3 million unit sales this year. However, challenges such as the lingering recession as well as Greece's financial problems and its effect on the euro currency could affect these plans. BMW took the top premium automaker crown from the Mercedes-Benz brand in 2005 and has not looked back since, although Audi seems to be making a serious challenge for it. This is taken off The Business Times (2nd July 2003) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Baby Lambo nets 12 orders By SAMUEL EE Twelve people have put their names down for the Gallardo by Italian exotic carmaker Lamborghini even before production began and way before the final price is fixed. 'At the moment, the car is about $850,000 without COE,' says KC Chong, manager of Lamborghini Singapore, the local distributor. 'The price is not confirmed but it will be below $900,000,' he says. 'The target is for delivery to start in November, but we're not sure how many units will arrive every month or every other month.' In fact, when news broke in mid-2002 about a baby Lambo that was smaller than the V12 Murcielago, Mr Chong says his company managed to get the first six orders even before the photos of the new model were released. 'We gave them a rough price, some confirmed specs, but they didn't know what it looked like and yet they decided to buy,' Mr Chong says. The mid-engined Gallardo has a five-litre, 40-valve V10 aluminium engine with 500 bhp. Four-wheel-drive and a six-speed gearbox will take it from zero to 100 kmh in four seconds. Thanks to a common parent, Germany's VW Group, the Gallardo will have a high-tech aluminium space frame like the Audi A8. It will also have conventional doors because Lamborghini's trademark sexy scissor doors are said to be reserved for V12 models only. Lamborghini Singapore expects the Gallardo to be a runaway success. Already, demand has outstripped that of the Murcielago, six of which have been sold here at $1.15 million each. 'It's a sure winner because it slots in neatly between the Ferrari 360 and the Maranello,' says Mr Chong.
