  1. mobile phones again .... Six-year-old girl dies after near-drowning in pool with lifeguards, swimming instructor distracted The state coroner criticised two lifeguards and a swimming instructor after a six-year-old girl, who did not know how to float or swim independently without support, died following a near-drowning at Kallang Basin Swimming Complex. On Dec 20, 2017, little Sherlyn Ler was left to fend for herself for at least four minutes as she swam using a swimming board. Her instructor, Mr Yeo Chwee Chuan, had led her to the pool's mid-point during her 7pm lesson before allowing the girl to swim to the edge. But he then turned away to focus on his other students, aged six to eight years old. Of the two lifeguards near the teaching pool, one was busy on his mobile phone while the other spent time arranging chairs. In an inquiry into her death on Tuesday (April 2), State Coroner Kamala Ponnampalam said: "The lifeguard should not be distracted by the use of his personal devices or idle chit-chat. "He should never leave his post unguarded. Drowning is known to occur quickly and quietly between 20 and 60 seconds." She also noted several lapses in Mr Yeo's management of his lesson, saying his class formation was "poor". "At several points in time, more than one student was out of his line of sight... Ideally, the child, especially one who is not an independent swimmer, should be within arm's reach," added the state coroner, who found Sherlyn's death a tragic misadventure. Although the girl's mother was seated on a nearby platform to keep an eye on her daughter, she too became distracted by her phone and when she turned to speak to other people. Moments after Mr Yeo turned his back, the 1.11m tall Sherlyn went under in a pool where the water's depth was between 0.8m and 1m. She died in hospital on Jan 9 last year from a lack of oxygen and blood flowing to the brain following the near-drowning. The Straits Times understands that Mr Yeo's coaching licence has been suspended by Sport SG and Mr Firdaus Rajatmarican and Mr Law Kum Wah, who left the pool unattended for at least four minutes, are no longer lifeguards. It emerged at the hearing that at 7.05pm, Mr Firdaus, who had been watching over the training pool, asked Mr Law to take over his duty as he needed to use the washroom. The state coroner said that closed-circuit television footage showed Mr Firdaus looking at his phone while Mr Law was arranging some chairs in the area. At about 7.15pm, two girls in the pool noticed Sherlyn floating face up and alerted Mr Law. Mr Law and Mr Yeo swam towards the girl and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on her. Paramedics arrived at the swimming complex at around 7.30pm and she was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, before being transferred to KK Women's and Children's Hospital the next day. State Coroner Kamala said that according to Mr Garett Lim, who is a trainer of the Swimsafer programme at Sport SG, Sherlyn should not have been left to swim alone. She was about 10m from her coach when the incident happened. Mr Lim also said the swimming board is a poor flotation device which is not stable and may float away, leaving the child unaided. The state coroner added: "Children, in particular, need constant supervision around water which cannot be done if the coach is not able to see them." Sherlyn's family members were in court on Tuesday but they declined to comment.

  5. A taxi took a dive into a swimming pool at a condominium when it took a wrong turn in the heavy rain early Sunday morning. The ComfortDelgro taxi apparently plunged into the pool at about 3am. ComfortDelgro spokesperson Tammy Tan said the driver had gone to the condominium along Upper Bukit Timah Road to fulfil a booking job. As it was raining heavily, the driver could not see clearly and made a wrong turn. He thought it was to the road leading to the lobby. The 44-year-old driver managed to escape unhurt before police arrived on the scene. The vehicle was fished out after 7am. Ms Tan said, "We are relieved to learn that our cabby had escaped unhurt and we will assist him the best we can. We will also be in touch with the condominium with regards to any damage that may have resulted." Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/taxi-dives-into-condo/881512.html

  7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2syDDenK6g A female body was believed to have been found by the side of a pool in a bungalow just off Coronation Road on Wednesday. Several police officers, including crime scene investigators, were seen canvassing the neighbourhood and collecting evidence at the house located along Victoria Park Road when The Straits Times arrived at the scene earlier. A large blue police tent had been used to cover the woman's body, which was lying on the wooden deck by the side of the swimming pool in the upscale bungalow. No details were available as to what caused the death of the woman, but The Straits Times understands that the case has been classified as an "unnatural death" and investigations are still ongoing. 10. ESPN news : Reports: Hulk to join Chelsea Chelsea will acquire Brazilian international striker Hulk from Porto for a 38-million-pound transfer fee, or more than $58.5 million, according to reports in British newspapers The Guardian and The Mirror. According to reports, both sides have agreed to the transfer, with only the club directors' signatures still required to complete the deal, which is still subject to a medical exam. Hulk, 25, has 57 goals in 91 games over the past two seasons and has played with the Brazilian national team during exhibitions this week. He scored twice against Denmark on Saturday. On Monday, 21-year-old Belgian attacking midfielder Eden Hazard revealed he would leave French side Lille to join Chelsea, though neither club officially has confirmed the transfer, reported to be worth 32 million pounds, or more than $49 million. After winning the Champions League last season, Chelsea lost striker Didier Drogba and will release forward Salomon Kalou and defender
  11. if you drink, dont swim. Feel sad, as condo pools are seldom deeper than waist level. Is condo rental so cheap nowadays? Or is the HDB rentals too high? Free water for bathing, and recreational welfare. Could be the trend for employers to house workers in condo. I guess the properties will always have support from more import of Foreign workers. AsiaOne Tuesday, Jun 12, 2012 A CHINESE national died Monday night after reportedly jumping into a swimming pool following a drinking session with friends. The construction worker had been drinking with about five or six others at a Kovan coffeeshop before heading back to Goodrich Park, an old condominium where they were staying. The Straits Times said the group decided to go for a swim and then shower at the pool facilities as they shared three toilets between 10 people. The worker, aged about 40 and who apparently could not swim, then jumped into the pool. He began struggling and was pulled from the water. A friend said a neighbour quickly jumped in to help pull him out. He was apparently still breathing when he emerged from the water. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they received a call at about 10.35pm and sent an ambulance to the scene. The worker was sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The friend told the English daily that the worker had been in Singapore for more than a year and had just moved into Goodrich Park condominium on the afternoon before he died. Most of the people living in the condominium are foreign workers; companies are known to rent flats as dormitories for their employees. The condominium is understood to be quite run-down and could be demolished by the end of the month, evening daily Lianhe Wanbao said. [email protected]

  15. I remember years ago before LTA introduced CBD charges and ERPs, any car which had 4 persons onboard did not have to pay a signle cent to enter CBD. On my way to office, i just picked up 3 passengers at some designated pick-up points and we all entered CBD free. The idea is to encourage communtors to car pool instead of having just one or two persons in each car (therefore taking up more road space and cause congestion). This also helped in reducing the number of bus/train passengers as some of them joined the car pools. With modern technologies, it wont be too difficult to screen cars which pass the gantries to see if the cars have 4 persons onboard. Today we see more than half the cars in traffic jams or busy roads carrying less than 2 persons... this is a waste of road space in tiny singapore. ERP does not reduce road congestion as effectively as car-pool except adding more $$$ to LTA's revenue.
  16. Dec 9, 2010 Frequent unsightly finds in the pool I HAVE been troubled by the frequent sighting of faeces in Ang Mo Kio swimming pool. I am an avid swimmer and have been patronising the pool at least twice a week. Public pools are meant for everyone. It is just plain wrong for anyone, young or old, to defecate in the pool. There is simply no excuse when the toilets are situated just next to the pool. Worse, the faeces are not found in the children's pool but the lap pool meant for adults. Such bad behaviour is intolerable. Together with other regular swimmers, I have highlighted these incidents to the lifeguards. I feel sorry for the lifeguards who have to dredge up such stuff. 18. Well done, Liverpool had lifted themself up from regulation zone to 12th posiition in the league .......... But ............. got next sunday meeting with Chelsea ....... ESPN reported that : The Reds could be boosted for the visit of the champions and league leaders by the return of Dirk Kuyt. The Dutchman has made a rapid recovery from an ankle injury sustained on international duty earlier this month. Another former Chelsea player, Glen Johnson, is also expected to be available after a thigh strain. Hodgson refused to talk up a Liverpool revival after his team finally climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with victory over Bolton.
