  2. Researchers at A*STAR have developed a system to help car drivers navigate junctions safely by voicing out cautions. The system in the car will get signals from sensors installed at junctions that will inform drivers of any approaching pedestrian or vehicle. A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) said the system can detect the speed of all vehicles at the traffic junction and warn drivers of impending collision. It is now on a year-long trial -- from February 2014 to end-2014 -- to study the feasibility of using advanced technology to enhance traffic junction safety. Currently, only a pair of sensors is installed along Jurong East Ave 1 and Toh Guan Road. Dr Jaya Shankar P, programme head of intelligent transport systems at I2R, said: "This system can potentially go into the next generation in-vehicle unit. The next generation systems, based on connected vehicles that allow car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications, would be fitted with the appropriate radios and even screens for drivers to view, and we believe that this would actually benefit the drivers and could be potentially fitted into this system." 3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJpx2cy6kAg Everyone should know how to use the jack that comes with his or her car. Try this at home so if you ever get a flat, you'll know where the jack is and how to use it.

  6. Just for fun.... very creative tunnel to go in..............
  7. 1400hrs: Took Lentor entrance into SLE(CTE). Rightlane was cordoned off by EMAS recovery truck and subsequently by half a dozen reflective safety cones. Visual ID of vehicle not confirmed. Peripheral vision and OC's verbal account noted 2~3x TP riders and a single badly crumpled up subcompact hatchback. Possibly Suzuki Swift or Perodua Kenari. No other damaged vehicles spotted. i heaved a sigh of relief as OC couldn't help but gasp that the crumpled wreck was horrifying. No police tent, thats all that matters. 1420hrs: Sent OC back home and on Yishun exit from SLE(BKE). Spotted a hurried Avante patrol car with strobe lights flashing, travelling from Yishun (possibly Yishun South NPC) ascending the SLE(CTE ramp) My heart sank. Gut feel told me that Avante was delivering police tent. God bless that poor soul. Guys please drive safely.
  8. To those who heading north this weekend for reunion with family and relatives, do drive safely, courteously and considerately. Hope u guys reached your destination safe and enjoy the festive season with your loves one! 新年快乐 一帆风顺
  9. Early this morning (0700hrs) saw the aftermath of an accident at the junction of CCK Drive and KJE slip road (exiting from KJE to CCK Drive). Private bus with Jurong Bird Park whack motor. Front bumper dropped from bus. Bike stuck at the front of bus. M/cyclist covered up when I drove past :( . 2 TP rex and 2 TP bikes at the scene. To all, please drive carefully and safely. Please have some tolerance for bikers, especially those who ride for the sole purpose of going to work. They may behave and ride in a bustardly manner sometimes, but a life is still a life. They want to die early is their problem, but please don't make the mistake of getting involved with them when they decide to meet their maker. RIP to the rider and condolences to his family.
  10. To the blue Honda Fit who was following me on ECP till Xilin Avenue today, I can see what you did but I have no idea why you did what you did. Please drive safely. If I gave you the wrong idea that I was trying to race you, please forgive me. 1. On Keppel flyover, you tailgated me so close, I think you almost couldn't brake in time and almost swerved into the wall in Lane 1. It's a traffic jam for goodness sake. 2. When I overtook the traffic on lane 2 and went back to lane 1, you mimicked the same move and chased my bumper yet again. That's dangerous, especially when there is just slightly more than one car length between me and the car I overtook on lane 1. For your info, there's no money on my rear bumper, but if you kiss my rear bumper, you pay me money. 3. For some reason you also exited on Xilin Avenue, after you overtook me. You were travelling on the leftmost lane, but when I passed you on the rightmost lane, you had to cut 2 lanes and tailgate me again, until you realised I was turning right and you are going straight. If you wanted to see the badge on my boot, yes it's real, but no, mine is not an Evo and I'm not interested to race. Any bros can offer some clues on the Fit's actions? Please enlighten me. End of rant.
  11. Guys, I think it is important to drive safely and not recklessly though you are really rushing for time cos the importance of your family members with you in the car is more important than you really late for your New Year Visiting. I have seen many drivers still drive like rushing to work cutting lanes after lanes, there are many new drivers on the road as well during this period so we have to spare a thought for them too. There are many accidents during this period and I saw 3-4 vehicles involved in the accident along PIE towards Changi near the Steven Road exit, guess you also need the car for your New Year Visiting and it is avoidable if everyone practise safe and patient driving. It is Better to be Late than Never Reached.
  12. Hi guys, just to share with u that over the past week i had 2 personal friends, each on separate occassions, both encountered serious accident. One week ago, i have a friend G, was drinking with some friends at a pub till 5am, then he got into the rear seat of his friend's car but didnt put on seat belt. Got into accident and hit the divider, front driver and passenger suffered injuries but both ok, but my friend G, is on the verge of life and death. Gone thru 2 operations already and last i heard yesterday was that his brain had internal bleeding but he is still conscious of wat is going on, but doc do not want him to wake up and feel the pain, so they are jabbing him to keep him rested. The 2nd ops yesterday, they had to cut open his skull to operate on the brain to prevent blood clot. He is still fighting for his life in ICU for the past week. He is only 29 this year and just started building up a good career in property. On Sat nite, heard from another friend they bumped in M at zouk and chatted. On the same nite, M was driving home and got into an accident. Now lying in NUH ICU coma. He is 29 years old as well and he started doing his own business 2 years ago. My friends, life is precious and pls take good care and be a responsible driver. Drive safely. The festive season is round the corner and everyone is blessing each other with well-wishes. I wish that both my friends can pull thru this. God bless them pls.
  13. I hope this thread can be used to compile info on driving safely during rainy season. IMO, these are the must do's: 1) Slow down! 2) Keep a longer safety distance 3) Turn on head lights This one is debateable: To on hazard lights or not? Handling incidents caused by rain: This thread talks about driving over puddles - http://www.mycarforum.com/forum/General_C1...water_P2595942/ I also encountered an incident and would like to seek some advice. A truck on the opposite lane sent a huge spray of water over my windscreen reducing visibility to ZERO for about 2-3 seconds. How best to safely handle this situation? I took my foot off the pedal and OMG OMG until the water cleared. Didn't want to brake because the guy behind me may be equally blinded. One thing I learned from the abovementioned incident is to stay clear of lane 1 during heavy rains. IMO, it is best to drive in the centre lane because water tends to pool at the sides of a road. Please feel free to contribute your advice or questions
  14. True story of my cousin L My cousin L has always been a car fanatic. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he was never wanting, and when he turned 23, he requested his father to buy him a top-range Mazda RX-8 (6 speed, 250ps or so) as his birthday present. His father obliged him. In their family garage a month later, the RX-8 was parked proudly next to the family BMW 530i and his sister's VW Beetle. L, then a university undergraduate, started to show off his ride to his classmates, and started to patronise performance car workshops with his ride to "soup it up" to go faster. He also started to dress it up in outlandish bodykits that made it look like it was ready to take off anytime from his driveway. The modifications and bodykits were paid for using his supplementary credit card which his father has given to him. Being a busy businessman, my uncle paid scarce attention to the activities and spendings of his son, brushing it off as a "growing up phase". The last I know, L has spent a total of about $60,000 on his ride, and in place of the once stock standard RX-8 now squats a menacing beast that boasts about 350-380bhp and looks like it would be requiring a license from CAAS to operate. We often had a good laugh over the looks of his car, with me deriding him on his choice of "garishly loud" style and him jokingly threatening to race and disgrace my ride if I continue to mock him. In essence, L was just indulging in his passion to the fullest he knew how. I think considerations of the law and his own safety never occured to him. I think thats what killed L in the end. I know that 3-4 months before he got killed, L had started to indulge in street racing, sometimes impromptu, sometimes with a group of like-minded friends. From the stories he shared with me, he must be enjoying himself very much. I had always told him to accompany me on one of my organised track sessions, so that we could have fun together in a controlled and safer environment, but L would always laugh me off and told me that "the real battles are on the streets, K". It was on a night in Nov 2007 that I received a call, a call that I had always dreaded to receive but somehow knew I would. It was my uncle, L's father. He called to tell me something has happened to L and whether I would mind meeting him at The Scene. Driving with a heavy heart to the place he had mentioned, Images of a laughing and carefree L fleeted across my mind like fragile butterflies. Words that we exchanged, tips that we shared on car modifications, thigh slapping humor that we shared, all seem to revolve in a mad mental cacophony in my head. Suffice to say that L was killed in a very bad accident, and the police at the scene had suspected that the accident occured during an illegal street race or high speed driving. The RX-8 was smashed to bits against a dividing fence railing. L, or what remained of him, was covered using two separate white cloths. His girlfriend, who was riding as a passenger with L, was injured badly and just as we arrived, was being loaded onto a parked ambulance. Needless to say, my uncle was inconsolable. I never had the courage to view L's remains, or to identify him at the mortuary later on. The funeral was a short and discreet affair, and L's remains were placed in a locked coffin and cremated without ceremony. Another young one has been killed on the road as a result of high speed driving. My uncle has since sold his business and retired. His regret was letting his son go too far in his passion without any form of restraints. I believe that there are many car enthusiasts like L in Singapore, with money and boldness to spare. Owning a ride of our dreams and doing it up to suit our tastes is a good and personal thing. There is no right or wrong in it. It is only when one goes beyond the established boundaries of safety that the grim reaper starts lurking near us. It a a cliche to tell anyone not to indulge in impromptu "street fun" at all, but all I wish to say is "know your own limits, and the limits of your car". Any life lost on the roads is never for a worthy cause.
  15. Today heard over the radio many accidents occurred during the heavy downpour. Was driving along SLE towards CTE around 4.30pm and traffic was still ok but suddenly, all vehicles came to a complete stop. inch my way forward and saw quite a few cars are involved. i think a pickup spin out of control and the cars behind couldnt stop on time. Bang... bang... bang...... Pls drive carefully and keep a safe distance esp during wet weather.
  16. Then when no police ops I drive recklessly hor? I should be driving safely whether or not there is traffic police ops ya?
