  1. Sister bought a 2nd hand car and I was pretty impressed with the noise/grip. Thinking to get it for my own car. Any ideas which shops have them? Thanks.
  2. How long is needed before an icon can be created? Many of us don't hold the answer - but Porsche does. Half a century of the 911 has seen it become one of the benchmarks - not just in its segment, but in the automotive industry. 50 years and seven generations - few models can claim a life as long-lived as the 911. That said, the 911's recipe has raised brows since its inception. Its engine is at the wrong end of the car. The looks? Many argue that it has hardly changed at all. But for Porschephiles - it is the timeless looks that, perhaps, hold the greatest appeal of all. It all started in 1963, when Ferdinand Alexander Porsche 'Butzi' penned the 911 to take over the 356. The second generation came in 1973 - almost a decade after the first 911's debut. It is also this generation that spawned the famous 'Turbo' variant, which was launched in 1976 - amidst an oil crisis. But that did not stop the 911 Turbo to become one of the greatest sportscar of its time. Codenamed '964', the third generation was massively revamped, carrying only 20 percent of its parts from its predecessor. The 'modern' 911 also incorporated new technologies, such as ABS, airbags, as well as Porsche's 'Tiptronic' automatic transmission and Carrera 4's all-wheel drive system. The fourth generation (codenamed '993') took the centre stage in 1993. As the last generation to sport an air-cooled flat-six engine, its status in history is firmly sealed. And it remains to be one of the favourites among fans of the marque. The fifth generation (codenamed '996') is very different from its forebears. It was bigger and has a sleeker profile, and more importantly the engine at its rump now employs water-cooling technologies. It was regarded by many as a departure from the previous 911s. The sixth generation (dubbed '997') saw the creation of a number of new variants, such as the 911 Speedster, 911 Sports Classic, and GT2 RS - the most hardcore road-going 911 thus far. The current generation reinvents the icon with a slew of new technologies. For instance, the GT3 ditched the old 'Metzger' block for a brand new engine. The track weapon also comes exclusively with PDK (Porsche's iteration of the dual-clutch gearbox) - no more manual transmission. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the 911. And as expected, there are celebrations being held at various places around the world. But nothing comes close to that at Silverstone. At an event organised jointly by Porsche Cars GB (a Porsche-only car club in U.K.) and Silverstone Classic, a total of 1,208 911s gathered at the circuit. The scale of the event was never preceded, and sets a new world record. It is amazing how the 911 has progressed through the years. At the same time, we too wonder how long the 'evergreen' design is here to stay, and if it does, how will it look ten, twenty years down the road. Only time will tell.
  3. The Motor Sports Association (MSA) was delighted to welcome more than 2,500 visitors to the inaugural Go Motorsport Live! at Silverstone, and can confirm the event will return in 2014. Staged at Silverstone last Sunday, Go Motorsport Live! was created to demonstrate just how easy it can be for people to get involved in motor sport. Visitors from all over the country attended the free six-hour show featuring a wide range of over 50 displays from motor clubs, teams, championships, manufacturers and other organisations. Most areas of the sport were represented from circuit racing and karting to drag racing and rallying, among others. Exhibitors reported excellent interest and engagement from the attendees. For example, one Oxford Motor Club staged an AutoSolo to showcase this entry-level discipline's huge appeal and more than 500 free passenger rides were provided during the day in a selection of unmodified road cars. Marshalling clubs were busy showcasing their expertise, performing extrications from a damaged saloon car, advising newcomers how to volunteer and highlighting the MSA
  4. The Formula One circus will be back to outwit and outlast each other this weekend at the British Grand Prix - to take place at the iconic Silverstone circuit. But just seven days after - certain teams will return to lend their support to the Motor Sports Association's inaugural Go Motorsport Live! on the July 7th - which also happens to be the German Grand Prix. With free public access, Go Motorsport Live! has been introduced as part of National Motorsport Week (U.K.) to encourage more people to get involved in all areas of motorsport. A wide range of enthusiast motor clubs, championships, teams and other organisations will provide displays and offer advice to help newcomers get started in the sport, whether as a competitor, volunteer or spectator. So essentially it sounds like one of those open houses we have here by the Air Force or Home Team only this time its all about high octane and two pairs of wheels. Visitors to Go Motorsport Live! will not only be able to see one of the Marussia F1 Team's cars up close but they will also have the chance to win factory visits to both the Sahara Force India and Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One teams. Sahara Force India is situated opposite the entrance to Silverstone and will be offering 50 lucky visitors a unique opportunity to visit the F1 team's headquarters. There will also be a chance for four Go Motorsport Live! visitors to win a factory tour at Mercedes AMG F1 at a later date. As a further attraction to Formula One fans, Silverstone will be offering hot laps on the southern section of its Grand Prix circuit as well as tours of its imposing new Wing pits. Visitors will even be offered the chance to stand on the F1 podium.
  5. Malaysia's Lion Group, owner of the Malaysian tire manufacturer Silverstone Bhd is selling the Silverstone tire brand to Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd. of Japan. According to press reports, Lion Forest Industries Bhd, the Lion Group company that holds 100% of Silverstone or 203.88million shares of RM1 each in Silverstone Corp. Bhd. Seeks to dispose the whole amount for RM462million (SG$192.333mil) to Toyo Tire. The purpose of the sale is that Lion Group wishes to realise its investment and unlock the value in Silverstone and wants to use part of the proceeds to settle an inter-company debt amounting to RM22.5million as at 30th June 2010. In other words, Lion Group wants to make a decent RM140million in cash from the sale as well as pay off some cash advances to the parent company. This gain will be reflected in Lion Forest's financial year ending 30th June 2011 accounts, which translates to an increase in earnings of 0.60sen per share. The report also states that Lion Group is consolidating its businesses and wants to put more focus on its steel and retail businesses. Lion Group is one of Malaysia's key steel manufacturing players. We all know what Toyo is known for; their tires like the Proxes R888 especially as well as their industrial rubber, soft and rigid polyurethane products and is listed on the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya stock exchanges. It is the fourth largest tire manufacturer in Japan. Toyo has a market capitalization of US$513million and expects to fund the takeover of Silverstone Tires through internal funds. Silverstone is a surprisingly profitable business entity. It saw its net profit double to RM33.57mil for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010 for the previous financial year and its net asset stood at RM285.67mil for the same period. Silverstone Tires will be Toyo Tire
  6. Former Renault driver Romain Grosjean has delivered a less than stirring appraisal after racing on Silverstone's revised F1 layout. After his disappointing half-season in F1 last year, the Swiss-born Frenchman now drives a Ford in the FIA's new GT1 category. That series was the first to race on the layout incorporating Silverstone's newly launched 'Arena' section. The 760-metre stretch features some slower bends that could help overtaking, but Silverstone is nonetheless tipped to knock Monza off the perch as the fastest circuit on the F1 calendar. "It's nothing special," Grosjean, 24, told the Guardian newspaper when asked about the new section, which is currently surrounded by building construction works and resembling Bahrain because grass verges have not yet grown. "We have lost Bridge and the complex which was very nice, and we didn't gain much with the new part. I'm not 100 per cent convinced. "With the single seater cars they are flat-out through Abbey and in formula one it is going to be very fast as well. I don't think it gives any overtaking opportunities. So that's a bit of a shame," added Grosjean. Former F1 safety car driver Oliver Gaven, however - who now drives a Corvette in GT1 - was more positive. "I think the circuit flows very nicely; I'm very happy with it," said the Briton. "It's got a nice combination of corners and some nice challenging stuff for us. There are two or three corners that are nearly flat and one or two that you have got to have a lot of commitment. "The style of Silverstone has been carried on. They have done a cracking job with it," said Gavin. Meanwhile, BBC commentator Martin Brundle doubts the new section will boost overtaking, but fellow former F1 veteran Johnny Herbert thinks 'Arena' adds "one" additional overtaking place to the circuit. 7. this weekend we will see F1 racing in UK Silverstone, home to the British Grand Prix however, in 2010, F1 (if it still exist) will be holding its races in Donington Park where? never mind... weather in UK reads: Though it will be foggy on Thursday, with an ambient temperature high of 17 degrees Celsius, it will brighten for the rest of the weekend. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will each be partly cloudy but dry, with temperature highs respectively of 17, 20 and 19 degrees. The race will run over its usual 60 laps of the 5.141 kilometre (3.194 mile) circuit, or 308.355 kilometres (191.600 miles) personally, i think JB will be running the show (again) at Silverstone. although i reckon he may not start from the pole, because teams like RBR and Ferrari may use a light fuel for Q3 to have a good race start JB will still managed to sneak a win in front of his home crowd. he will be fired up to show the UK people that in all the previous years with a BAD car, he's not a bad driver at all. everyone wrote him off late last year when Honda pulled out... but this sat and sun i'm sure the majority of the crowd will endear to their new British racing hero at the fore, and it's not Hamilton in 2009. wat a year makes.... schedule: FRI Practice 1 17:00 FRI Practice 2 21:00 SAT Practice 17:00 SAT Qualifying 20:00 SUN Race 20:00 Silverstone is famous for its high-speed layout, particularly the first half of the lap, which includes one of the finest sequences of corners of any track in the world. Its high-speed nature means the British circuit is tough for tyres and engines, as the drivers will not touch the brakes at any stage during the first half of the lap. Corners range from 180mph sweepers to the long, slow complex at the end of the lap. The car must also cope with the bumpy surface and capricious, gusting winds that always affect the former airfield.
  8. Anyone using/used this tyre? Silica compound in this model as claimed by the manufacturer. Selling about RM150 each the last i enquired when up north. thread looks quite good to me. http://www.silverstone.com.my/tyre_kruizer1NS700.asp any expert? Thank you!
  9. Silverstone EVOL 8 tyre Mileage travelled on current tyres : aprox 15000 km Previous Tyres : CSC 2 and German made(as opposed to Thai made) Goodyear Eagle F1GSD3 Review Proper : I found the CSC2 comfortable and not bad for dry weather grip, however the wet weather grip was poor. I would feel insecure travelling at speed on the CSC2. Also at the time I bought them, I feel they are overpriced.Ride comfort and noise is good. Goodyear Eagle F1GSD3 : dry grip on par with CSC2 but slightly worse steering response and feedback. Wet grip : Outstanding! In fact I felt more secure driving in wet weather than dry.Ride comfort : Good. Noise : initially good but once past 10000km, the noise was unbearable. Price : cheaper than CSC2 but make sure you get the German made ones. Silverstone Evol 8(current tyres): the best overall tyres I have had the pleasure of owning!! Dry drip is very good, best of the 3 brands and steering response is also good,on par with the CSC2. Wet weather grip : better than the CSC2 but loses to the Goodyears--however I would say that it is excellent if judged by itself(few tyres if any match the wet weather performance of the Goodyears).Ride comfort : on par with CSC2 ie Good. Noise level : as good as the CSC2 and definitely better than the Goodyears. Price : cheapest of the 3 brands. Disclaimer : I happen to know the local distibutor Mark and he gave me a discount since these tyres have not been extensively trialled on Sg roads and on luxury sedans--I was the guinea pig so to speak. However, the regular price is still much better than comparable brands of similar performance/quality. Overall : combines the best characteristics of both CSC2 and Goodyear F1GSD3 with few compromises and much more attractive price! 10. Taken from F1 racing Live (dated 20/10/2004) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is finally dead after Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One promoter, decided he could do nothing more to save the nation's biggest motor race, a newspaper said here Wednesday. Silverstone's inability to react to the fast pace of modern business means that it has lost out to one of the nations clamouring to climb on to the sports calendar of increasingly exotic locations, The Times newspaper said. It is thought that Ecclestone is negotiating terms for a new Grand Prix in the United States, it added. Ecclestone refused to be drawn on the venue, but said that he had to end the talks on Silverstone to guarantee the new event, for which promoters were ready and willing to meet his terms, the daily said. The decision will be a body-blow to the hundreds of thousands of Formula One enthusiasts in Britain who have been making Silverstone their motor racing Mecca for the past 54 years, it said. Ecclestone told The Times he finally had to give up attempts to save the race, after the longest talks of his reign as Formula Ones promoter, because he had a new offer on the table from a consortium that needs an answer immediately. "What could I do?" he said. "I have got an offer from another country who are looking to build a lovely venue and invest a lot of money in Formula One and they will pay the going rate. I have to give them a years notice to go ahead. If I miss that because I am still messing about with the BRDC, I would be keeping out a country that desperately wants to be in the Formula One World Championship." What started as an argument over price boiled down to what Ecclestone said was a series of nit-picking disputes with his terms, the newspaper said.
