Today mad rush at showroom.

Cat A Volvo V40 diesel at $130k and Kia Forte at $106k.

Volvo test drive list for today had over 40 names as at 5pm today. Long wait to test drive.

Cat B Made in Japan MAZDA 6 and Korean Kia K5 saw healthy bookings at $134k with guaranteed COE. *Why buy a Thai assembled Toyota Altis 1.6 when you can get a Japan made 2l MAZDA 6 at the same price?

With strong bookings, Next round COE is expected to go up.

This has happened many times in the past. With strong booking, COE may go up in the next few rounds.

I am surprise Mazda & Kia is giving guaranteed COE.

Dealers seem to go all the way out to lelong their cars cheap cheap. The question is then how much muscle they left to fight for the COE?

Are these guarantee COE coming from their existing Open Cat E COE which they have on hand?

I hope COE price settle down at certain point without much up and down regardless of supply..so majority will be able to accept the fact that 'cheap' coe during financial crisis was already a past. Can imagine how many people are not happy / content because of the COE price fluctuation that is like someone always hoping to strike lottery on every forthnightly. its a negative trend towards nation's overall happiness index :(

our roads are congested enough during peak hours. got to accept the fact that private space and comfort during commute comes with a price.

its about choice..

Here even housing also prices always up down up again. U have to time yr purchase well.

COE is on an auction n bidding system. This wil cause the price to fluctuate.

Is there such a thing in car buying as 'riding the wave/cycle'?

Those who bought their cars in the 2005-7 eras when COE prices were not too high, if they keep their cars till now, maybe when COE prices drop in the near future, they can 'ride' the wave again and change new car, enjoying reasonably 'low' COE price level again? I am one of them (once I hold my car passed the 4th year, I keep it till now)

its about choice..

In some big world cities eg NYC, many of the people use bus/train/taxi to commute and don't own a car, or rather rent one as and when they need to go outside the city.

Car ownership is not a status symbol and the public transport system is efficient / convenient as the key mode for moving around.

Their car prices are not high, in fact they are one of the lowest in the world. So this is proof that there's no need to make car prices / roadtax artificially high (eg Singapore) to manage traffic congestions ---- just give the people an efficient and affordable bus/train system and such congestions will be under control.

Of course there is! Just like riding the property wave.

Buy low and it will be easy to upgrade/downgrade to realize profits.

Buy at peak the person will suffer for a long long time - cannot upgrade/downgrade as he will be paying mortgage/car loan for something that is worth less than the outstanding loan.

The problem is many are waiting for this wave.... And at what level you think is low enough to enter??.. My car also '07 but I don't think I will wait 1020k level since I don't think it will drop to that low, 30k-35k maybe is a good bet... I might enter market at that lvl..

My previous '03 car was with 24k coe, with current market, very unlikely will drop to that level anymore..

Looks like the new "norm" accepted will be $30k-40k?

all boils down to demand ... the equilibrium will move up if demand is strong, which is the case now.

With strong bookings, Next round COE is expected to go up.

Guaranteed prices being offered by Mazda for eg are based on lower than the latest COE prices. So either they are compromising on their profit margin or they are sure prices will go down for sure over the next few rounds.

If lot of dealers collect orders based on latest or lower COE prices, unlikely COE prices in the next round will rebound strongly. Slight rebound this round followed by downtrend again the folowing 2-3 rounds.

By end of this year, prices should be in range of 50k - 60k for both Cat A & B,

Sounds good! In that case, everyone should just wait out till later this year! No hurry, be patient!

demand for lower COE?

in normal ideal concept, it about demand vs supply...

but in this COE bidding system, if too many bid $1... the COE just drop...

only individual will bid $1 ... hope to kena 4D

AD will not bid $1 ... each car that is sold (before coe is bidded) already pre-determine the coe level

which mean AD will bid with no mercy ... if the car is sold with 50k coe ... AD will bid $50k coe to deliver the car

yeah ... the japanese/korean AD now offer cheap cheap to lock in the sale for 6-8 bids (approx 2 months)

but they will not get the coe because all the coe will be snapped up by conti bmw/merc/audi/vw

unless the demand for conti is lower than coe supply
