RadX Moderator November 12, 2016 Share November 12, 2016 I actually feel that the hazard lights should be on when visibility is very poor like heavy rain because 1) you want to increase visibility of the car and rail lights might be insufficient 2) all drivers approaching you must assume you are a hazard or stopping even ifor you are in middle Lane. 3) you have to be moving at a very slow speed like a crawl because visibility is so bad. If you are still at normal speed you are suicidal and dangerous 4) you should not be changing lanes if your hazard lights are on because it is too dangerous. If you need to change lanes then off the hazard lights but if there is no pressing need, don't because it is too dangerous. I don't think anyone will accuse you of road hogging when you are slow because in a heavy rainfall everyone is crawling. Unless you do that during a drizzle or light to moderate rain....... That said the hazard lights are for situations when visibility is so bad that you feel it is unsafe to drive normally and you need to warn drivers to keep a distance from you. Normally they should but if everyone did that there would have been no accidents also. Of course there are other uses for the lights but I just write specifically for the use of them during heavy rainfall. If you are doing this ... STOP! The general consensus here is it creates obfuscation and is a clear distraction. In any case, best advise is not to drive and to stop somewhere until it gets drivable. Most of us have no issues and just to be more alert of our surroundings when having such weather. Again I say, stop such a practice! For your own safety as you could be a collateral in any incident! Ended up knocking down several lamp posts and traffic lights. Of my x0 years of driving I remember about 10 years ago, there was once almost all cars on the road on hazard light while movin. You can only see 2 feet in front. I just follow leh..... I don't think any cars imported will have Original factory installed rear fog lamps ; but won't people think its like the car is in reverse mode and glare at the back driver ?? Yes must maintain same lane as signalling will be voided and people confused Whats the main reason to turn on? Scare others bang into your car from behind? Most already slow down, there are no reasons to turn on during heavy rain. It just adds on to confusion. Imagine everyone so used to hazard light driving and when the car infront is fully stop with hazard light, he would get bang from the back. Continuous hazard lights' blinking makes it worse if everyone is doing it. It reduces our focus and increase fatigue, because our pupils will dilate on and off repeatedly. In general I feel people who use hazard lights are well meaning but just misinformed. Vehicles on Malaysian highways and roads switch on the hazard lights only when the rain is so heavy that visibility is very poor. Once the hazard lights are on, they will just follow the cars in front and NOT change lanes. If visibility is still reasonable during a downpour, switching on the lights will be sufficient s the rear lights will be visible. Tested, no matter how heavy the rain is, 5W bulb is enough for the person behind to notice you. You can't even see lane markings or where the road is, let alone other cars! Yes, been one that was that bad in malaysia. Can't see lane marking, Don't even know if I was in lane or driving on the shoulder.
