Buadongdong Twincharged July 6, 2017 Share July 6, 2017 "specialised charging places"? Looks like the general public are still lack knowledge of how EV charging work. To make it very simple term is all you need is this in your car park. It doesn't matter what or where the car park is, as long as you have this normal power point your are good to charge your electric car without the need and "specialist place or equipments" to charge your EV. Malaysia did tried install charging point in the forecourt. No very successful idea. Do you keep your engine running when you park at the HDB/Condo/Office while you having your lunch/dinner/dump/work? Same logic apply to EV when you park up plug it in the socket. And you off to do your business. 2-8 hours later all fully charged when you return to your car. Unless you are taxi/delivery driver thats a different scenario. Even this Grab survive with full EV. Point is you don't need an EV that can charge in 5 minutes for day to day life. Unless you are doing long distance travel everyday like drive all the way to KL. Even long distance do have a solution with current EV. Take Renault Zoe new 400km range EV capable of non stop travel to KL and find a 22kw or faster DC 43kw charger to charge the car in less than an hour while you having lunch or dinner. EV come from a long way since 2010 Nissan Leaf. They already have batteries that capable of produce 500km range as well as charge up in less than 5 minutes. It's use matter of the mainstream manufacture will buy the technology or still hanging on to oil company tits. Bro, your normal 13-15amps power point will take about 7-8 hrs for a full charge leh (according to LTA' EV factsheet). Don't think thats an ideal duration as compared to 5-10mins for conventional topping up of petrol. Moreover, the network of charging stations are still not well developed yet. So EVs in SG will still pose some challenges before the idea can materialize.EV Factsheet .pdf ↡ Advertisement

Yes agreed with that a normal 13amp socket will take more than 7 hours to fully charge an EV thats not argument on this. The question is do you park your car on a parking lot for more than 7 hours everyday? If yes then shouldn't you plug and charge it while it park in the carpark? Again you don't need to wait for special charging stations to be install. If your MSCP block have normal 13amp plug you can ask HDB for permission. I am highly doubtful HDB will agree to let you do that as who is going to pay for the electricity consumed? There would be too many issues to handle. Also would be very stressful for the drivers to fight for the lots on daily basis with general public and fellow EV owners as only very few lots have 3-pin plugs nearby. I agree with your opinion that can charge while parking overnight, but the infrastructure for the charging ports should be established by the right authority and not cowboy style, like what we are seeing now with the sad bicycle rental situation where the randomly parked bicycles are becoming an eyesore. But for condo and landed property should be no issues lah.

I didn't miss your point that the car can be charged whilst being parked. My point to bring across is that the network of EV charging is not widely accessible yet. And we also have to purchase or acquire the charging pin that's suitable for the EV that one may have bought. We also have to think abt theft, about how these charging pins/cables/connectors can be left at the charging points without worrying about it being stolen. If its a simple plug and play, then it would be too easy an item for pple to conveniently unplug and take away.
Shibadog Turbocharged July 6, 2017 Share July 6, 2017 You are suggestion a solution and then quoting the obvious problem of that solution. There is no way charging ports are feasible in petrol stations if charging takes a few hours. You expect the car owners to park their rides and come back after a few hours or the next day to collect the car? And the petrol stations would be losing valuable retail space just to cater for a few charging ports as the monetary returns are very low compare to petrol, with few transactions possible per charging port per day. So I don't expect that to happen lah. http://www.newstream.asia/biz/petronas-powers-ahead-free-ev-charge-stations-pipeline/ 10 free electric vehicle (EV) charge points at selected Petronas stations, 55 more by year end Step to encourage more Malaysians to go electric and do their bit for the environment I personally hv seen Msian plate X5 plugged in at one of the petronas stations along E2

The cables are came with the car when you purchase new. The cable will be always lock on the car side until you unlock the car just like the car doors. So no one can steal the cable. You need to own a plug-in hybrid and an EV to know this.

U meant this? http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/parliament-singapore-to-set-up-2000-electric-vehicle-charging-points To a question from Ms Lee Bee Wah (Nee Soon GRC) on whether the 2,000 charging points would be accessible to all vehicle owners or only participants of the car-sharing programme, Mr Khaw said he was not sure. Not even sure if it is available to the public other than the car-sharing scheme. And I think I did posted recently about the whole scheme being scaled down significantly. DACH Supersonic July 6, 2017 Share July 6, 2017 I don't think it is double charging, just that need to pay a lot of different form of taxes 1st is tax on the for fuel / electricity 2nd is tax on the emission/pollution The car can be a low fuel drinker but high emission due to poor combustion engine Only thing is because Electric cars do not produce obvious emissions, they have to estimate the emissions from the source , which is the power plant and link it to the car horsepowerto charge this tax to be fair to its fuel counterpart.. But this will slow down the adoption of EV & PHEV since there is not much cost benefit to switch due to the multitude of taxes where they are not exempted either I think the power plant should be taxed instead for using carbon related sources, and not the electric car. Pollution comes form the power stations and not the electric cars. Same goes to normal electrical appliances like your handphone, washing machine, laptop, etc. Would that it be ridiculous that you are charged extra for emissions from the power stations just because you charged your handphone? Charging emission taxes on power stations would be the fair taxing and will encourage power stations to use greener sources.
Nhyone 4th Gear July 6, 2017 Share July 6, 2017 (edited) Charging emission taxes on power stations would be the fair taxing and will encourage power stations to use greener sources. This is already included in the electricity tariff, hence the double charging. Edited July 6, 2017 by Nhyone
