I wonder one thing.  Right now, what is going on in other movie theaters like at golden village and cathay etc? Business as usual or emergency overnight inspections of their ceilings?

And today when people go back to their offices, will they look at their office ceilings in the same way as before?

This can be consider accident, no one can predict when it will happen? Unless the accident happen due to human error?

Quality of our construction has fallen and rightfully pointed out recently by some experts that it cost 20% more to maintain. Not only quality is a problem, control on design and selection of materials are also very big problems. If you look into glass which is the current cheapest and fastest and most used material for building facade, they not only introduce heat into buildings that requires more energy to cool down, the high chance of spontaneous glass breakage and their danger is very real. Plant creepers on facade that are non maintainable and need replacement due to their life cycle are becoming a trend too.

Expect to see more of this on the way...

Termites ate away the ducting materials till give way.

this is real or joke/guess?

If real, then whole NEX in trouble... and only like 8-9 yr old?

my family and i go there quite often, at least before CB... as we stay nearby. in fact, i was there on Sat morning...

if got termites (at level 4!), will whole building be affected?

last time school roof collapse, was it at sengkang or somewhere, the PE or someone who signed off, got into trouble... This time will or not?

Guess what happened to the person on the receiving end?

If someone was directly below, i don't think stands any chance...

if missed by inches, really must go and 还神。。。then sue GV/NEX big time...

Ducting are galvanised sheets and hangers are metal rods lah. I doubt termites are interest in fibre glass insulation material. I am quite sure it got to do with workmanship and vibrations both related to quality of construction.

I do not think is termites. Rather, lack of regular maintenance and inspection. Thus there was pooling of water in the ducts from the condensation causing corrosion, weakening the structural integrity of the ducts.

Instead of following SMRT using cable tie, this one like using glue to join it.

No hard big screw.

dont think it is the failure of the duct itself but from the picture it is the bolts that gave way. looks like those spring bolts to dampen the vibration from the duct?

Not sure. But definitely lack of regular maintenance and inspection. Hope BCA will investigate further.

Even brand new MRT power supply cable also got corroded due to poor QC, not surprised if sub standard metal rods or bolts used in this case.

2 moviegoers injured after ventilation duct collapses at Shaw cinema in Nex mall

Quote

“For safety reasons, BCA has instructed that the cinema be closed pending further investigation,” said a spokesperson in an emailed statement.

The authority also told the building’s owner to appoint a professional engineer to carry out a detailed investigation of the incident, inspect and assess the condition of the other air-conditioning and ventilation ducts in the cinema, and recommend rectification measures to be carried out.

Is there an issue with the way we approach project tender? Many materials are sourced from certain nations to ensure competitive pricing. Is there any way to verify authenticity and validity of material test certification and ensure the same material procurement, and supervision and inspection of proper installation?
