  5. SINGAPORE: The International Olympics Committee is still hoping that the United States will re-consider its decision to pull out some of its athletes for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore in 2010. Organisers were hit with news last week that the swimming, cycling and shooting teams from the US were not competing. The IOC now wants the US to review its decision. "Because having American athletes in the sport is very important, and the United States is one of the best nurseries for young athletes, not only at the school level, but the university and collegiate system in the United States is outstanding," said Kevan Gosper, chairman, Press Commission, International Olympic Committee. The US said the Youth Olympic Games seemed more like a world-youth peace programme than a high-level competition, but the IOC insisted there is a good balance. "If anything at all, the focus of the IOC and teams are still very much on competition and I think for us it is managing it so that they will make sure that the athletes have time to take part in culture and education programmes, so at the end of the day, it will end up to be a very good balance," said Ng Ser Miang, VP, International Olympic Committee. The US swim team said it has a four-year outlook for its youth national team, and the Youth Olympic Games was not part of that plan.
  6. indonesians say they uncovered apec plot. zhoon or trying to distract from recent botched nordin top capture and score points for uncovering a serious plot? Aug 24, 2009 Attack plot a 'rumour' LAW Minister K. Shanmugam on Sunday dismissed as 'completely unverified rumour' recent media reports that there is a plot to attack the Apec Summit to be held in Singapore in November. But Mr Shanmugam, who is also Second Home Affairs Minister, hastened to add that Singapore takes the security of the event very seriously. Media reports last week quoted an intelligence analyst from the Centre for Intelligence and National Security in Indonesia as saying that investigations into last month's bombings in Jakarta had uncovered a plot to target the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit being held in Singapore in November. The probe supposedly revealed that terrorists also planned to use snipers to attack United States President Barack Obama's convoy during an expected visit to Indonesia around the same time. Said Mr Shanmugam: 'Wherever the President of the United States, or various heads of states visit, you obviously take the appropriate security precautions.' The minister was speaking on the sidelines of the Chong Pang Emergency Preparedness (EP) Day where a simulated bomb attack at a mock coffeeshop was also staged. Asked about the likelihood of a terrorist attack in the heartlands, he noted that it was not just about being on guard against a terrorist attack, but being ready for any type of emergency. 'For a small country like us, this is not just an issue of preparing against terrorist attacks, it's creating a mindset and understanding within our population that (in) any kind of emergency, we are all able to respond,' said Mr Shanmugam. Having events like EP Days helps, but people may forget or not hear about them. 'You've just got to keep doing it, keep raising awareness and keep engaging people,' he said. The school-based Community Emergency Response Team (Cert) of Chong Pang constituency was also launched at the event on Sunday.
  7. Hi, I have been to komoco for servicing since I got my avante in Oct' 07. (SGM) Each time they do tyre balancing and rotation for me, the car would pull to the left. and I would have to go back to them to correct it. And it will be fine. This month I just went for servicing at a workshop at AMK autopoint. When they lifted the car, they discovered that the right rear tyre is balding on the inside. They told me that there is an alignment problem. Strange thing is that the car still drive straight... So I brought new types, balance them and installed them in the car. The car started to pull to the left again. Just like the case with komoco. So I went to do my alignment. They adjusted the toe of some wheels that went 'off', but most imptly, inform me that the right rear wheel's 'camber' is off by 0.8 degree and that the advante's rear suspension cannot adjust that. So right now, my car still pull left after the alignment... what should I do? Is this a manufacturing fault? Can I claim in under warranty? So far my mileage is 55k. Thanks..
  8. I noticed almost all of my friends and colleagues pull the handbrake with a 'grrrr' sound. Years ago, my driving instructor had said that this was not the way as it wears out certain mechanisms faster... true? What are your habits?
  9. Hi, pick up my Superb today... to my surprise, the 16" tyres were Michelin Energy instead of the usual ContiSportContact 2!!! ; furthermore the tyres had a YOM of 2508!! Demands to change to CSC2 were not met - instead they offered to "top-up" any difference if i trade-in at LS tyres. But... frankly, it din work out...:( Just wondering if i'm the only one with Michelin tyres?? sighz... my journey with Harvest has just started with a dent...
  10. Day : Sunday, 22-Mar-09 Time : about 7.20pm Location : next to CP Exit, on the left side. I was driving around looking for a parking lot when I turn left. There was already 2 infront of me, right infront of me was a red madza and infront of this was a champagne mercedez. I can see 2 seperate lots available, seperated by a few cars - not more than 5. I think the mercedez was about to start to move forward then reverse into the furthest lot which is only logical. There would not be a problem for the mazda to make his move to reverse into the lot nearer to him, infact it was at just about infront of him. After I managed to parked, I was able to ascertained between the 2 empty lots(which jas already been occupied by both the red mazda and the mercedez is 3 cars away. What I saw next, . The red mazda coming from behind mercedez right side, then cut infront on the left and stop in a diagonal position and proceed to reverse into the lot that was nearer to the mercedez. The mercedez gave a horn to warn of danger. The red madza front passenger gave a hand gesture to the mercedez that there is a empty parking lot behind. As the mercedez was reversing into that lot, the driver(male with a mascular body) and the passengers(2 female) came out after parking. The 2 female passengers were looking into the direction of the mercedez and laughing away. The mercedez was driven by a lady with a female passenger.
  11. Subaru have made a shock announcement that they are to pull out of the World Rally Championship with immediate effect. Just 24 hours after Suzuki said they were quitting the series, Subaru have cited the worldwide financial economic crisis as to why they will also not continue. David Richards, the boss of the Prodrive company that runs Subaru's efforts in the WRC, was saddened by the decision which brings to an end a 20-year association. "Subaru's departure from the World Rally Championship is a great loss as it is one of the sport's icons," said Richards, who helped Prodrive win six WRC titles. "The Subaru World Rally Team has created true champions such as Colin McRae and Richard Burns and its absence will be felt by many the world over. Although this decision closes a significant chapter in Prodrive's history, our focus now turns to the future." Richards said Prodrive would look to redeploy their WRC workforce elsewhere in the company - having also confirmed that their customer rally teams will continue. A statement from Prodrive suggested that they were looking for a swift return to the WRC, especially with new regulations are set to come into force in 2010. "Looking ahead, 2010 will see the introduction of new World Rally Championship technical regulations, which provide Prodrive with an opportunity to prepare for re-entering the championship with a new team and build on its 24 years of World Rally Championship experience and success," said the statement. Subaru have struggled to find form with their Impreza in recent years. Their last victory was in September 2005, when Petter Solberg took victory in the Rally GB after Sebastien Loeb chose not to triumph following the death of Michael Park. Their last win on merit was the Rally Mexico in March 2005. The long-awaited new Impreza was introduced in the Acropolis Rally in May and, although its performance was originally encouraging with Solberg finishing second in Greece, it was never able to genuinely challenge Citroen or Ford for victories. The team were hoping to push ahead with the development of the car ahead of next season and were planning to run four cars in 2009. The withdrawal of Subaru and Suzuki in the last 24 hours leaves just two manufacturers in the sport - Citroen and Ford. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72492 Loser & Quitter!
