  1. ST Forum Jun 23, 2011 Unhappy about experience at restaurant ON JUNE 9, my family and I went to Jack's Place to celebrate my husband's birthday. We arrived there at 7.30pm and placed our order. Thereafter, four couples strolled in. Thirty minutes after we had our soup, we were still waiting for our main course of NZ striploin steak and baked codfish. On the other hand, the four couples were already digging into their steaks. We asked a waiter to check on our order but he did not update us. We then approached the manager, who said the food we had ordered would normally take a longer time to prepare. I am not convinced this was the reason. I believe the staff forgot the order. Ironically, the bill came before we asked for it. Is this the type of service to expect from Jack's Place? Why wasn't there any follow-up from the manager when we were the only table left waiting? 2. Just saw this at a car park. If you are the car owner...would you laugh or cry at this "surprise"???
  3. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24618701 US drone strike killings in Pakistan and Yemen 'unlawful' CIA drone attacks in Pakistan are responsible for unlawful killings, some of which could amount to war crimes, Amnesty International says. Amnesty said it reviewed nine recent drone strikes in North Waziristan and found a number of victims were unarmed. In a separate report looking at six US attacks in Yemen, Human Rights Watch says two of them killed civilians at random, violating international law. Drone warfare has become common in the US pursuit of al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Few details are known about the covert US drone operation. Senior al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders have been killed in drone strikes in Pakistan, but civilians have also died. These attacks cause outrage in Pakistan, where many assert that the strikes cause indiscriminate deaths and injuries. Last week, a UN investigation found that US drone strikes had killed at least 400 civilians in Pakistan, far more than the US has ever acknowledged. UN special rapporteur Ben Emmerson accused the US of challenging international legal norms by advocating the use of lethal force outside war zones. Establishing precise casualty figures and identifying the dead in such attacks is virtually impossible as independent media are barred from tribal areas near the Afghan border. 'Very tight leash' Amnesty said it had investigated nine of 45 recently reported attacks by US drones, unmanned aircraft operated remotely in control rooms, often on other continents. The group called on the US to disclose information and the legal basis for strikes carried out in Pakistan. In the report, Will I Be Next? US Drone Strikes in Pakistan, the rights group named several victims who, it says, had been unarmed and "posed no threat to life". In October 2012, 68-year-old grandmother Mamana Bibi was killed in a double strike as she picked vegetables in the family's fields while surrounded by her grandchildren, said the report. It said US President Barack Obama's pledge earlier this year to increase transparency around drone strikes had not been fulfilled. "This secrecy has enabled the USA to act with impunity and block victims from receiving justice or compensation. As far as Amnesty is aware, no US official has ever been held to account for unlawful killings by drones in Pakistan," the report said. It called on the governments of Pakistan, Australia, Germany and the UK to investigate drone strikes or other abuses that may constitute human rights violations. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch said in its report that six US drone attacks in Yemen killed 82 people, including at least 57 civilians. It added that two of the strikes killed innocent people indiscriminately. A controversial aspect of the US policy is that drone attacks are carried out not by the military but by the Central Intelligence Agency. US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has argued in favour of the policy, saying that the US will continue to defend itself. President Obama has insisted the strategy was "kept on a very tight leash" and that without the drones, the US would have had to resort to "more intrusive military action".
  4. Summary. Due to the revised workweek from 5 days to 6 days scheme. Many bus drivers have less OT opportunity, therefore their potential $2000(with OT) salary, is now reduced to $1400(no opportunity for OT) per month. So they decided today shall be Report Sick day.(Not strike hor) This reminds me of the army days...where many also report sick on the days of Siong exercises or activities. SMRT
  5. SK Carz Advertisement Over the weekend, I visited SK Carz for their $38 special grooming promotion. This is the title of their promotion: "SK Carz Complete Car Grooming Package @ $38!!!" It was indeed a forgettable experience. (I hope). They asked for my i/c when i first got there. Was wondering why there's a need to do so....... I always feel uncomfortable to surrender my i/c to small shops like this. I contemplated before deciding to give it to them. Then the receptionist said she'll need to inspect my car's condition. Upon touching my car, the first thing she commented was that the $38 promotion will NOT remove those stains (bird sh|ts/water mark etc) found on my car, nor will it remove the rough surface feeling. In fact, she suggested upgrading me to a $138 package, which can do so. If i continue with the $38 promotion, the result will be similar to a normal car wash from a petrol kiosk. I'm a non-fussy customer looking for an affordable car grooming service. I kept my cool and asked for my i/c to be returned. I said goodbye to SK Carz forever and traveled home from bukit batok to bedok. In addition, I'll take home with me 3 cancellations from my friend, colleague and relative.
  6. she needs help http://www.divaasia.com/media_photo/15165 You can say Michelle Chong has found fame, 13 years after she took her first step into showbiz as a finalist in the 1998 talent search Fame Awards, organised by the then-Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS). Now, after an uphill climb involving countless rejections by those in the industry, the local star has reached the peak of her career. The versatile comedienne-actress-host, known for her hilarious impersonations and alter egos Barbarella and Leticia Bongnino on the Channel 5 skit show The Noose, is in high demand and appears on Mandarin TV channels too. She can command a five-figure sum for a night's work performing at private events, owns a condominium apartment on Thomson Road and drives a Porsche Cayman. And on Dec 1, she will be making it on to the big screen with Already Famous, a film she wrote, directed and starred in. But now that she's, well, already famous, the 34-year-old MediaCorp star says she is deeply unhappy. She didn't shy away from revealing to the media in June that she was seeking professional help for her depression - what her doctor terms a chronic chemical imbalance - and is taking medication for it. Chong feels the main reason for her unhappiness is the lack of a long-term creative outlet. She also thinks her loneliness contributes to her unhappiness. She has never been romantically linked to anyone or spoken to the media about her love life. "I do crave for love and companionship. I can't wait to get married and have kids. I'm not dating anyone now and I am lonely," said Chong, who then broke into the classic Bobby Vinton song Mr Lonely. Read the full story here.
  7. Venus : Jurong Point 's Durian empire. Name : Yu Huan [Floor Manager] Date : 9/10/11 Time : 4pm plus. Wifey placed an order for 2 durian rolls and a durian waffle at the cashier. Seated and waited for the foods to be serve. When the foods does arrived it turn out that my durian waffle wasn't waffle but instead durian chendol. Obviously they have made a mistake in my order. I was telling myself to make do with chendol since it has the same durian topping like waffle. The outlet was pretty bz with the afternoon crowds as well. Good intention on my part turn out to be taken for a ride. sigh. After 2, 3 scoops and minutes into the chendol, a waitress (Lady in the pic) came to our table with a plate of waffle. Politely i told her is fine she can take back the waffle i won't be able to finish it. I have tasted the chendol anyway. What pissed me off afterward was when she said that i have to top up the px different. Since chendol cost $2 plus more than waffle. Unbelievable she also accused me (customer) for not informing them that order was not correctly served. So the onus lie on the customer! I stood firm and say "NO" to topping up the px different. $2plus is a small issue but is the principle that matter. Through out the heated verbal exchange i was conversing in english while she in Mandarin. Only then it strike me that she aren't local. So i switch to my not so fluent mandarin and threaten to bring the issue up to the relevant authority. She than relented and offerined an "unwilling" apology. I told her straight in the face that this is not the practise/cultre in singapore. Yes i admit i gotten a bit carry away upon learning of her nationailty. I am certain if a local born and breed floor mgr i would have gotten an apology straight away. Is this the culture/practise in their country ?
  8. AS AN older citizen, I am uncomfortable about the presence of former government scholarship holders in the opposition. To me, it seems as if they are abandoning their parents who paid for their excellent education. Yes, one could argue that these candidates were in fact supported by taxpayers and will now serve all Singaporeans, and not only the People's Action Party. But, are they really sincere about helping Singapore achieve a better society by joining the opposition? Can they effectively check the Government or will they create more fighting or quarrelling like the parliamentary sessions in Taiwan? Aren't there enough ways of giving feedback to the Government? I can contact my Members of Parliament any time; I don't even have to make an appointment and can e-mail them when I need help. It takes time to know these scholar opposition candidates and I wonder if I should risk the four to five years it will take to know such a candidate's ability, and compromise national progress. A better answer for me is not to vote them in for this General Election and see if they continue contributing. I would even apply my answer to the Workers' Party's star candidate, Mr Chen Show Mao. I would like to see if he really relocates his family to Singapore, as he has told the press he would, if he fails to win the election. A candidate like Workers' Party chairman Sylvia Lim is too academic for an average voter like me. She makes good speeches but rarely champions a voter's bread-and-butter needs. A good MP to me must not only act as a check on the Government, but also serve the ground and offer effective solutions to the Government. I would prefer a few good opposition MPs than many who are merely interested in the glamour of being in the opposition in Parliament. Ho Lei Gi (Madam)
  9. The Electric New Paper : Movie violence He's punched in cinema, but frustrated with attacker's no-show for mediation Just follow law, and Mr Jiang Yanlong did exactly that. By Geraldine Yeo 18 November 2010 Just follow law, and Mr Jiang Yanlong did exactly that. While watching a movie with his girlfriend on April 25, another moviegoer punched him in the head because Mr Jiang had told him to be quiet. What followed was Mr Jiang's frustrating journey in making sure his attacker didn't get off scot-free. For seven months, he went from police statements to filing a magistrate's complaint and two court dates in which his attacker did not turn up. Mr Jiang told The New Paper later: "I thought the matter would have just been settled and that I would get compensation. I didn't expect this to drag on." He said he was looking for monetary compensation as well as an apology. Here's his biggest frustration? there's not much else he can do.
