  7. Source The man who played Top Gear driver The Stig has joined rival show Fifth Gear. Ben Collins, 35, will debut on the Five programme when the new series launches next week. He will appear unmasked because The Stig is a BBC trademark. 'I'm delighted to be joining the Fifth Gear team,' he says. 'And I'm looking forward to a new set of exciting challenges...apparently with and without the helmet. Former Formula Three star Ben was identified as The Stig last month after the BBC lost a High Court bid to block the publication of his forthcoming autobiography, in which he outs himself. He is the second driver to take on the role - he slipped into the hot seat vacated by Formula 1's Perry McCarthy, 49, in 2003. Top Gear bosses are expected to hire a new Stig now. ================================================================================ =================
  8. ...... or rather the guy in the white suit and helmet. Ben Collins has been terminated by Top Gear following following the revelation of his role in Top Gear in his new book: http://news.drive.com.au/drive/motor-news/...0908-1506y.html http://news.drive.com.au/drive/motor-news/...0913-1582w.html First Perry McArthy, now Ben Collin. Who's next?
  9. Could this be a publicity stunt? When it comes to Top Gear's The Stig, anything is possible. The latest is this: The BBC is pursuing legal action against the Stig to stop him (her?) from revealing his identity in an autobiography he is writing. The British public broadcaster contends that it is part of his work contract to keep his identity secret. The Stig has been with the show since 2003 and is one of the main elements that make up Top Gear's mystique. He test drives the cars featured on the show and it is his track times with which Top Gear ranks them for lap performance. The Stig also trains the celebrities who participate in the Star in a Reasonable Priced Car segment. The identity of the Stig is something the show guards well. Aside from the presenters, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, and a few key BBC executives, no one knows who he is. Top Gear and the BBC have been known to toy with the public on the identity of the Stig, last year they pretended to have the Stig remove his helmet on the program only to reveal Michael Schumacher wearing his trademark white race suit. 10. The Stig has taken another step toward shrugging off the shackles of the BBC. As you may recall, Top Gear's tame racing driver recently locked horns with the Beeb after he made it clear he wanted to publish his memoirs. The show's producers found issue with text, saying that revealing his identity would not only be a disservice to the fans of the show, but that it would also violate the terms of his contract. Thing is, a judge has struck down the BBC's injunction to keep The Stig from publishing his book. That means publisher HarperCollins can move forward on bringing the book to life without fear of any further legal action from the BBC. Interestingly enough, Ben Collins, the man who has long-been rumored to be the Stig, was spotted leaving the courthouse shortly after the ruling was issued. Collins was evasive when asked by reporters if he was the man in white, though we have a hard time thinking of any other reason why he would be at the hearing. [source: The Guardian]

  13. Michael Schumacher was unmasked as the BBC car programme Top Gear's mysterious 'The Stig' on Sunday night. The enigmatic white-overalled, gloved and helmeted figure, who for years has anonymously tested cars for the TV show, appeared on the floor of the British programme after breaking its test-track record at the wheel of the Ferrari FSX supercar. Asked by host Jeremy Clarkson to take off his helmet, The Stig reluctantly obliged, revealing F1's now 40-year-old seven time world champion Schumacher. Clarkson jokingly asked the famous German what his name was before he became famous as The Stig, but Schumacher answered: "You have to have some secrets". However, the true identity of The Stig was unmasked by the press earlier this year as 33-year-old Ben Collins, although the speculation was not confirmed by the BBC and it remains rumoured that the character is actually played by multiple drivers. A spokesman for the British broadcaster, meanwhile, confirmed that Schumacher was The Stig for the Ferrari segment, but that otherwise the truth would remain "a mystery". source: http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp...33676&FS=F1 Source:

  16. Source: http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/3025/ "Whoever's in that car is a seriously good driver," said Fernando Alonso pre-race at the British Grand Prix last weekend. Alonso was watching a man being driven around in a two seat Santander grand prix car by a mysterious white-clad driver. "I've no idea who he is, but he's definitely ex-F1," Alonso continued. Who was he talking about? The Stig of course! Those of you who were at Silverstone last weekend may have noticed the well-known tame racing driving lapping the circuit before the F1 cars went out to the grid. The Stig had been bought in a Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital charity auction for the princely sum of
