Should I migrate?

I do wonder if bro @Vid still feels the same way about SG now that housing prices are stabilised and medical  costs are managed with insurance and pioneer packages.

It will still be costly to retire here in comparison to other Asean countries. But there are pros and cons of other places as well.

How come nobody mention Malaysia?

If I were to choose a country in ASEAN for less culture and language barrier, low cost, near to Spore, good standard of living, etc...I will certainly choose Malaysia. It is a great balance between good living standard, cost of living, and proximity to Spore.

Every time I go to developed Western European countries, I feel like migrating there.  One big factor is the weather.  In Netherlands, the harmony on the roads is also so amazing.  See this video.

The food in Holland is also decent.  Plenty of Asian food, thanks to their openness and Indonesian influence.  This is Rice Table dinner at Garoeda Indonesian restaurant, probably the most famous Indonesian restaurant in Den Haag.

Before the start of the business day, I took a walk outside the hotel and I manage to catch swans on an autumn day.  So peaceful.

But visiting as a tourist or on business trip, is very different from staying there altogether.  The reality is that their society and culture is very different from what we are used to.  There is no right or no wrong in this statement.  It is a question of ethics and values.

Also, life is not easy in the Netherlands.  Unemployment rate is quite high.  Outside Amsterdam, some of the municipalities have double digit unemployment.  Even in Amsterdam, they have no problems getting flexible and temporary labour to man their service touchpoints, example service counters or call centers.  Plenty of unemployed people around.

Salaries are not high either.  Google and you can check it out - http://www.payscale.com/index/NL/Job

While they have a very generous welfare state, with unemployment benefits and health benefits, the working people pay a lot of taxes. The marginal rate hits 42% once you exceed 33,363 Euros a year, and the marginal rate hits 52% when you exceed 56,531 Euros a year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_tax_in_the_Netherlands

VAT is 21%.  So they are really a high tax, high benefits economy.

Agreed with those that want to migrate to Europe on the weather, pace of life n culture there.

That said, the down side is language for non English speaking countries, food n possibly discrimination.

Sometimes grass not necessary greener on the other side so whilst there r same pros, there r also some cons as well. Guess no place like home despite the occasional frustrations.

High cost for local but low cost for Singaporeans. It is an attractive proposition. Sell a condo here and buy 5 in KL for rental income. But JB is a no no to me.

The UK is not really a consideration for me. For one thing, it's fairly alarming to see how many of *their* people have started coming here. And I'm not talking about expats mind you, but true economic migrants.

For another, the point is missing. The UK is not known for being a super-relaxed place like OZ or NZ so it'll be neither here nor there.

Developed and relatively lower cost (some cities) as compared to Singapore but glass ceiling for Asians in these countries. If retire there while kids work here, then there is less incentive to move.

How about UK?

Singapore is too safe.

But with building of HSR, I believe more will move to KL to live like the elites there. If your passive income is in SGD, KL is really cheap.

I never considered Malaysia as a place to migrate, I felt that Chinese would not have a place there

Furthermore, I can't speak Malay

IMO, it depends which city you go. Of course you don't go migrate to Kelantan or Trengganu where most Malays are.

As for language, English is very widely used. Certainly much more in use than any other ASEAN countries.

So ts, did you migrate eventually ? If not, why ?

As a side note ,Nowadays Malaysia cost of living quite high especially due to the recent currency depreciation.
