Ma Chi's Ferrari reached 178kmh during crash

by Teo Xuanwei Updated 12:02 PM Oct 31, 2012

SINGAPORE - The Ferrari driver who crashed at the junction of Victoria Street and Rochor Road was travelling at 178kmh, or nearly three times the speed limit, just before the collision.

This was according to the speed clocked on a camera mounted in the late Mr Ma Chi's vehicle.

The Coroner's Court was shown three video clips this morning from different angles showing what happened before the fatal crash that also killed cabby Cheng Teck Hock and his passenger Ito Shigemi.

The court also saw from the footage captured on Mr Ma's in-vehicle camera that his speed had increased from 169kmh to 178kmh between the pedestrian crossing in front of Bugis Village and when he crashed.

The case continues on Friday.

Its a timely reminder for all the people who have fitted GPS-enabled (and to a extent even non-GPS) car cameras - it could well be used against you the owner in the event of an accident. You might not be in any shape to remove the memory card if it is serious enough. These cameras are like truth and justice - they fear and favour no one.

That's my guess too. i guessed to be 180km/hr, by looking at the taxi's camera video clip.

And no wonder AXA refused to pay. i support AXA in this.

A driver driving at 180km/hr, still dare to claim insurance? No shame at all..........

Insurance companies also need to protect themselves.

180km/hr is not the normal speed, normal bumper denting kind of accident.

If anyone bothers to read their insurance clause, they would find, speed trials and other restrictions and these are not covered.

If sports cars want to test their maximum speed, they have to go to special tracks and pay special insurance just for that.

Neutral Newbie

Is the in car cam aiming at the speedo or the road? Maybe also got sound clip of sound inside the car between the girl and MaChi?

Is the speed actual image from the cam or from the calculation using the in car cam based on markers?

Then must get 007 device which will self-destruct in 10 seconds when activated by front passenger airbag. [laugh]

I'd imagine the camera had an integrated GPS system that recorded some parametres such as speed

(I wonder if it was the type the also records whether car was braking or not, and if he even tried to slow down)

At this kind of speed and at night, his vision is basically tunnel or funnel effect, for street road, its warped speed.

Maybe he about to pew pew so cannot control right leg and step harder.

If it is equipped with shock sensor, yes, u can see it. Esp those korean car cam, normally equipped with GPS and G-sensor aka shock sensor. There is a charted graph to show the gforce recorded.

it pretty common for car cam comes with GPS logger, mine even recorded the triaxial g forces in the log file........ so yes, the function in your question within the bracket does exist......
