Grab/Ryde issues and charges

Taxi really super poor business now as if like those taxis have ghost, no one want to take. Lol. Last time on weekends usually long queue of people at taxi stand at MRT station, but now i see long queue of taxis at taxi stand instead.

 

 

taxi driver also use U/G apps, maybe only the older ones reluctant to learn or refuse to use the app.

Can see many RED CABs Parked along the road near shopping centre (in Malaysia) waiting for customers.

If taxi driver also using U/G apps, then PHV should not affect them so much lo. But dont know why it seems like taxi business really got affected a lot by those PHV.

The main problem is taxis priced themselves out of the market with surcharges:

 

1. Midnight surcharge

2. Peak hour surcharge

3. City Area surcharge

4. Location surcharge - Changi Airport, Seletar Airport, Marina Bay Sands, Resort World Sentosa, Singapore Expo

 

Once they removed all the surcharges, they will become more competitive.

The united society of official real taxi operators should come up with a single unified app for taxi bookers and taxi drivers.

The surcharges are not created by the taxi drivers but rather by the taxi companies and approved by Public Transport Council (PTC).

 

The taxi companies are charging high rentals for their taxis and end up the fares need to be high so that the drivers can still earn a bit after paying the high rentals.

 

Even with up to estimate of 20% of taxis being left in the taxi companies (not rented out to drivers, the big taxi companies are still unwilling to reduce the rentals. I'm suspecting that the rentals are high enough to generate profits despite the fact that there are a lot of taxis collecting dust in the taxi companies premises.

 

The flooding of the PHV drivers are affecting the taxi drivers now as now, the customers for Uber / Grab can get the drivers to pick them up almost at their door steps without paying for so called booking fees. As a matter of fact, through the day, there are only a few time slots that taxi drivers are able to pick up passengers (during the surge pricing period of Uber / Grab whereby they becomes more expensive than hailing a taxi on a street or booking a taxi).

Last friday when N-S line broke down in the morning and I wanted to book a ride from Admiralty station to Bedok North. I used Uber and Grab app to check and both were above $50.

 

I used the comfortdelgro app to check and it was only $34 flat fare, no booking fee.

 

When returning from Bedok North to Woodlands in the afternoon, Uber and Grab were both above $30 while comfortdelgro was $24.50.

Not only all the surcharges that taxis have but think also the mindset which some taxi drivers have lo. Before PHV come into the market, taxi drivers mindset always like they are the king and choose customer, choose location and with attitude problem. This is why i heard some taxi drivers who went over to PHV, eventually go back to taxi driver, cause some of their mindset still cannot adapt the PHV way of driving.

Because for taxis there's very little brand loyalty. Almost everyone just flag down whatever is available, don't really care what company.

 

So if remove surcharge but never see any increase in ridership, the company will lugi. And in Singapore, such things only go up, never go down.

PHV may also belongs to either UBER or those Limosine company

 

Grab has introduced the Grab Enforcement Team, where enforcement officers ensure Grab drivers display the proper PHV decals and have their PDVL or concession letter.PHOTO: GRAB
