Encountered two cyclist with death wish within mins of one another last week.

First one, suddenly decided to ride in the centre of the first lane from his initial riding on right turn lane to overtake cars that are turning right. He was cycling with is headphones on.

Second one, I already signalled to turn right, waiting for e-bike to clear. Perdestrian stopped to let me turn. This PRC cyclist purposely turn into the lane that I was turning into. KNN.

The china cyclists not scared one. cuz they know the law in Singapore protects the pedestrians/cyclists. I overhead this group of construction workers discussing about how good it will be if they get into an accident and get a payout from insurance/company. They were like, even if die also not bad, at least back in China their family will have a good life from then on. Dunno were they joking or not.... And their standards really low, they were saying like 50-100k compensation for their family enough already.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA: CYCLISTS CAUSING CHAOS AT WOODLANDS CRESCENT
(MOTORIST FILMS ERRANT BIKERS AT WOODLANDS CRESCENT)

Nov 3, 2015 6:00am
BY NABILAH AWANG AND FOO JIE YING

Driving to work in the morning often feels like steering through an obstacle course for Mr Kenneth Xie.

Cyclists riding in groups, beating red lights or going against the flow of traffic are a part of the daily grind for the 30-year-old design engineer.

In a bid to highlight the chaotic cycling situation at Woodlands Crescent, where he lives, Mr Xie uploaded an edited 2½-minute video from his in-car camera unit, which captured what happened in 30 minutes.

It caught errant cyclists in action while he was on his way to work on Oct 23 from about 7.30am.

About 1½ minutes into the video, a cyclist can be seen stopping right in the middle of the road with a girl, who looked like she was wearing school uniform, riding pillion.

At one stage, numerous cyclists ignore the red light and swerve onto the next road.

At another, numerous cyclists ride across against traffic, which makes Mr Xie comment in the video: "I think they think this road belongs to their grandfather."

Asked why he put up the video, Mr Xie said: "I've seen these errant cyclists' negligence of the safety of other road users too often that I feel the issue needs to be highlighted."

The father of two is ultimately worried about the safety of his two daughters, aged three and six.

"I am worried to even let my daughters walk on the walkway because I am afraid these cyclists would hurt them," he said.

Mr Xie also alluded to a TNP report last year, which resulted in fines against errant cyclists in another part of Woodlands last year.

The New Paper went to the same stretch of road yesterday from 6pm to 7pm and found at least 20 cyclists riding against the flow of the traffic.

Most of them would turn in from Woodlands Avenue 9 - near the industrial parks - to Woodlands Crescent.

There, they would look over their shoulders and wait till the roads were clear before cycling to the other side of the road, against the direction of the traffic.

NOT PAYING ATTENTION

Some would even ride two abreast in tight spots, exchanging smiles and banter instead of focusing their attention on the road.

Occasionally, screeches of brakes could be heard as the cyclists reacted to an oncoming vehicle.

Like Mr Xie, those who live or work in the area are no strangers to such scenes.

Mr Josh Kyaw Soe Naing, 39, an assistant manager at Fortune Supermarket, said that in his four months of working in the neighbourhood, he has seen many careless cyclists on his way to work.

"I always see them in the morning. A lot of them seem to be rushing to work so I try to get out of their way," he said.

Admiralty Secondary School student Muhammad Ernaim Affandi, 15, agreed.

"When I'm on my way to school, I make sure I stay to the side of the walkway. Sometimes, they cycle in groups because I can hear a lot of bells ringing, and when that happens, I usually stop walking to let them pass," he said.

Ms Maricris Llamosa, who lives in the area, said that she was almost knocked down by a cyclist just last month at about 7pm.

She too, attested to the chaotic cycling situation at Woodlands Crescent and felt it put pedestrians in danger. (See report on facing page.)

Errant cyclists are fast becoming Singapore's new breed of traffic offenders, said Mr Steven Lim, president of the Safe Cycling Taskforce.

"These cyclists have the mentality that they are not motorists and that allows them to get away with traffic offences," Mr Lim, 48, said.

He added that even in accidents, these cyclists may feel that their actions will not cause any deaths.

Under the Road Traffic (Bicycle) Rules, cyclists are required to ride close to the left side of the road and in a way that does not obstruct vehicles moving at a faster speed.

They are also not allowed to ride alongside any vehicle, or two other bicycles, on roads unless they are overtaking.

The penalty for a first-time offender under the Road Traffic Act is a maximum fine of $1,000, or a jail term of not more than three months.

For subsequent offences, the penalty is a maximum fine of $2,000, or a jail term of not more than six months.

They are also expected to follow all other traffic rules.

Dos and don'ts

DON'T

Do not speed or ride in an inconsiderate manner
Do not overtake others in a dangerous manner
Do not cycle on footways, expressways or overhead bridges unless the pavement is meant to be a shared path
Do not cycle at high pedestrian areas such as traffic crossings, bus stops and covered linkways. Dismount and push your bike instead

DO

Install a front light and a rear light or reflector for cycling at night
Install a properly secured seat for pillion riders aged below 12
Obey traffic light signals
Cycle with flow of traffic when on roads
Slow down and give way to pedestrians when approaching intersections with pedestrian access
Slow down when approaching bends with limited line of sight
Stay on cycling path where available

If you follow this forum, you will know that there are many drivers who cannot share the roads with slower drivers and cyclists.

My bicycle has a Gopro clip on just for this kind of incidents.  Nowadays, everyone on the road is loaded up with cams to protect themselves, so should we cyclists.

Yes driver fault but cyclist aint saint

Listen to what he said. Its a nice wide two lane road.

I mean u can see the truck behind patiently waiting as cyclist hog the entire left lane. Traffic aint that quiet. This is sg, not europe. If these cyclist know manner, then they should keep it the most left unless overtaking other cyclist. Nnb si amdk

What do you expect?  Look at the comments you regularly see on this forum that are on blasting cyclists which are very biased as this is a car forum.

Cyclist is legally allowed on the road and legally allowed to ride 2 abreast.  The driver, according to the police, was in the wrong and convicted of 3 offences.

What laws did they break?  They were keeping left, plus also they are legally allowed to ride 2 abreast.  Plus if you read this part:

As we came to the end of the stretch, we stopped at the traffic lights, waited for them to turn green and starting rolling off. Just at that time a car came up behind us sounding his horn in an aggressive manner. No idea why as we weren’t doing anything wrong. The car then pulled up alongside us and made a swerve towards us before speeding up and then pulling in front of us and slamming on his brakes.

You should know that traffic banks up at traffic lights and when they go green it takes a while for everyone to get going again.

Yes, cyclists are allowed by law to ride 2 abreast. However, under this circumstance, given the somewhat heavy traffic in a 2-lane way, they should be considerate enough and ride single file.

For example, if my wife and I are walking abreast along a narrow pavement, and if someone comes towards our direction, I will drop behind my wife and let the incoming person pass. I am not required by law to do this, but I'm doing this so that traffic can flow.

I don't mind cycling in single file if drivers know how to overtake properly. For now when cycling in a group I still prefer to cycle 2 abreast. Reason is cuz most drivers don't know how to overtake properly. I feel safer cycling 2 abreast. At least this makes most drivers switch to the other lane when overtaking rather than trying to squeeze past on the same lane.

Btw, what is the difference between a small motorbike and a bicycle? I have ridden a small motorbike in the middle of the left lane at 30km/h but no one overtook me recklessly, or honked at me. But when I cycle at 30km/h on the left lane some drivers will honk at me and some will overtake very near me.

In Singapore, a lot of roads is 2 lane.

In Europe, a lot of back road is 1 lane only.

If a car driving at left lane @ 30km/h, would faster car chut this kind of pattern?

If a container truck driving at left land @ 30km/h, would faster car chut this kind of pattern?

It all boils down to road users etiquette on this island.

Hmmm did these cyclist travel 30kmh?

In this video they seems to be cycling slowly. U can see the big truck behind got stuck.

I am not against cyclist but they shud cycle to most left. So at least when overtaking drivers dont need to change lane as our road marking is pretty wide

Now if they cycle on the bus lane during peak period, do u think its fine to cycle side by side? how many times i see cyclist hogging during peak hour?

No law, cycling dont have law one in sg. U can cycle in any road any lane as long as not expressway.

Yes during traffic turns green and everyone takes time to get going again. But cyclist accelerate slower. So they should allow cars to pass right? Since they are slower. Its like a manner to keep left so faster vehicles can overtake easier. Especially during peak hours, these cyclist makes 2 lane become one lane, like theres road work, 2 lane become 1 caused traffic pile up

Roadie smelly smelly 30km/h especially the way cyclist is pedalling.

So, does it mean car can drive at 30km/h but not bicycle?

I always cycle during peak period hogging bus lane.  Bus has no problem overtaking me.

So U cycle side by side during peak period? Did the bus overtake in lane 2? What happen is traffic is jam up? Bus cannot overtake?

I usually cycle in the bus lanes during peak period also. Whether I cycle 2 abreast or alone, bus drivers are educated and considerate people. They have no problems changing lanes and overtaking. Even when I cycle alone, they also change lanes and overtake with ample space rather than trying to squeeze past. But most are those private buses. SBS and SMRT buses usually go slower and will just follow behind to the next busstop and then never catch up with me again.
