Weez911 Supersonic December 10, 2015 Share December 10, 2015 I don't mind cycling in single file if drivers know how to overtake properly. For now when cycling in a group I still prefer to cycle 2 abreast. Reason is cuz most drivers don't know how to overtake properly. I feel safer cycling 2 abreast. At least this makes most drivers switch to the other lane when overtaking rather than trying to squeeze past on the same lane. Btw, what is the difference between a small motorbike and a bicycle? I have ridden a small motorbike in the middle of the left lane at 30km/h but no one overtook me recklessly, or honked at me. But when I cycle at 30km/h on the left lane some drivers will honk at me and some will overtake very near me. My point was inconsiderate vs gracious cyclist, and clogging traffic vs letting traffic flow. If a cyclist does not feel safe riding on our roads here, being paranoid and what not, maybe it's not the problem of drivers, but the cyclist? ↡ Advertisement

I feel safe cycling 2 abreast. So since the drivers can't do anything about it, the cyclists solve the problems themselves without breaking the law. Not saying he is right, but there are people who are riled easily on the roads, about why some cyclists can't be more gracious and let cars pass. Some drivers are making a living, like truck and cab drivers, and some are damn old. Why can't we make life easier for them?

A_korusawa 5th Gear December 10, 2015 Share December 10, 2015 (edited) from a driver perspective, cyclist riding 2 abreast is causing more danger to themselves. what to do? its these cyclists' perceptions of as long as they are not breaking the law, they will always own the left lane . . . how to share road with this mentality??? its definitely wrong for the hyundai driver since there was no reason for him to drive into left lane just like that and causing hurt to the cyclist in the video. imagine . . . what if its the car that goes below 30kph in front of cyclists . . . will the cyclist be patience enuff to go behind the car by not overtaking??? or, if the car e-brake for a good reason and that resulted the cyclist to bang into the car's rear..... will cyclist admit his wrong and pay for damages like a normal car2car accident? I usually cycle in the bus lanes during peak period also. Whether I cycle 2 abreast or alone, bus drivers are educated and considerate people. They have no problems changing lanes and overtaking. Even when I cycle alone, they also change lanes and overtake with ample space rather than trying to squeeze past. But most are those private buses. SBS and SMRT buses usually go slower and will just follow behind to the next busstop and then never catch up with me again. sigh . . . . SBS, SMRT drivers lan lan...... they'd rather go slow than taking the risk from overtaking, be it causing dangers to cars on the right lane and complains from the cyclists. they are just looking after their rice-bowl. but this act is actually pissing so many passengers inside the bus....... sigh, one's self-centered act in the expense of so many, sigh! now I know why buses can still be late even when gahmen goes all out to have dedicated bus lane, penalizing cars driving on the lane etc. should cyclists be fined from delaying buses by riding on bus lane during peak hours??? Well, some drivers can do something about it, like the Hyundai driver. Not saying he is right, but there are people who are riled easily on the roads, about why some cyclists can't be more gracious and let cars pass. Some drivers are making a living, like truck and cab drivers, and some are damn old. Why can't we make life easier for them? its obvious that cyclists who ride in 2 abreast . . . they dun wanna let themselves be delayed or slowed down by another cyclist in front.... macham like shoulder to shoulder ..... this is no difference to those boy racers...... in the expense of all road users behind them! imagine, if the cyclist on the left sees another cyclist overtaking on the right..... will he slow down??? and even if the left cyclist slows down - will the overtaking cyclist go onto the left after overtaking??? the answer is obvious if cyclist adopts the same mentality mentioned above! sometimes, dunno what's inside these cyclists head . . . they can run out-of-luck some day and it will be too late and be utmost regrets for their loved ones, both the cyclist's and driver's.......sigh! I used to be an avid cyclist and I have witnessed exactly this ..... one can be so stubborn to swim across the river of piranhas instead of waiting for the boat, arguing that they will not attack without provokes..... but when things happen, blaming games begin . .. why there's no signboard.... this & that - sigh Edited December 10, 2015 by A_korusawa

But.. Pls don't use that to justify wat that Hyundai driver did. Ungracious cyclists cause inconvenience only.. That driver caused an accident. And so chicken to run away after that like a coward.

Some drivers are making a living, like truck and cab drivers, and some are damn old. Why can't we make life easier for them? Very difficult to overtake by changing lane? Then better go back to driving school. from a driver perspective, cyclist riding 2 abreast is causing more danger to themselves. That is good. So they'll give the cyclists more space. what to do? its these cyclists' perceptions of as long as they are not breaking the law, they will always own the left lane . . . how to share road with this mentality??? its definitely wrong for the hyundai driver since there was no reason for him to drive into left lane just like that and causing hurt to the cyclist in the video. imagine . . . what if its the car that goes below 30kph in front of cyclists . . . will the cyclist be patience enuff to go behind the car by not overtaking??? or, if the car e-brake for a good reason and that resulted the cyclist to bang into the car's rear..... will cyclist admit his wrong and pay for damages like a normal car2car accident? Cyclists don't own the left lane. Slow moving vehicles belong to the left lane. Go to the left lane, expect to go slow. If it happens to be clear then you are lucky. How come I don't have problems when driving at 30-40km/h in my van or riding a motorcycle on the left lane but once it becomes a bicycle, I am hogging? sigh . . . Usually the buses that overtake me are the private ones. SBS and SMRT buses will disappear from my rear after 1 or 2 bus stops. They don't even get a chance to try and overtake. its obvious that cyclists who ride in 2 abreast . . . they dun wanna let themselves be delayed or slowed down by another cyclist in front.... macham like shoulder to shoulder ..... this is no difference to those boy racers...... in the expense of all road users behind them! imagine, if the cyclist on the left sees another cyclist overtaking on the right..... will he slow down??? and even if the left cyclist slows down - will the overtaking cyclist go onto the left after overtaking??? the answer is obvious if cyclist adopts the same mentality mentioned above! I don't think you have cycled before. Usually the ones that like to go really fast will cycle in a single file if they are in a small group or 3-4 ppl. This way they can draft behind the first cyclist to save energy and take turns to be infront. The average speed will be alot higher than cycling 2 abreast and both have to fight the air resistance. I am talking about the cyclists who only care about going fast. I ride 2 abreast because I am riding for fun and it is safer that way. I never said I want to save energy. Please read before commenting. FYI, they cycle in a straight line when drafting, unless there is crosswind. Overlapping wheels or zig-zag like what you suggest is considered bad cycling etiquette and is more dangerous. Seems like you don't read before commenting. I never censor any of your points. Mariosradk4 Neutral Newbie December 10, 2015 Share December 10, 2015 It is not the matter of who has the right of way, but who has the right of life. Everyone has the right of life. No point thinking who has the right of way without thinking the safety of your own life and others. Take for example, crossing the road at the traffic light, it doesn't mean green man it is safe to cross. For motorists, it doesn't mean a green light it is safe to go either. The thing here is that both cyclists and motorists need to be wise to make it another day. If both stick to their loaded heads, then things may turn into a tragedy. The cyclist, with almost close to zero protection, will suffer the most and the motorist will face the law. It is a lose lose situation. So the best solution: For cyclists, be wise by finding a route that has ample lanes for the sake of your safety and please do think that this is SG not Europe as in reality we do not have the luxury of space. Please be aware of your situation at all times when you are riding on the road as you are taking the most risk. One wrong decision can cause you a lot of pain or worse fatality. For the motorist, please be patient if you encounter such cyclist riding in a manner as though it is safe but it is not. Overtake them when it is safe to do so and please do not show your displeasure. Similar to other motorists, they won't be happy being horn at although they are in the wrong. Please have a thinking that you have to face the consequences if something really happens. Be it cyclist or a motorist, any thing bad happens, I believe it ain't worth it. At the end of the day, we still want to reach home safely. So please people, be road smart and don't add up to the statistics.
nazerath Turbocharged December 11, 2015 Share December 11, 2015 from a driver perspective, cyclist riding 2 abreast is causing more danger to themselves. And nuisance to drivers. Some can be quite rude to signal for the driver to use the other lane and get off their back. It is times like these I wished I have a 2 stroke bike to go in front n smoke them.

I also drive my car out for fun occasionally with no destination in mind. all the more i dont comprehend why they have this mentality where most are drivers themselves. irritating at best.... Maybe it is because that is what they practice? When I drive, I also know cyclists expect drivers to overtake with a 1.5m gap so whenever I need to overtake cyclists I change to the next lane before overtaking. If I have to follow behind them because I am turning ahead I will keep a safe distance behind them instead of getting too close to them.

I sometimes drive or ride slowly for joyrides and when the cyclist had to overtake me from the right, they were plenty rude too. Strength in numbers. Try driving slowly in front of them n see how some of their behaviour are. ↡ Advertisement
