Nzy Twincharged September 27, 2015 Share September 27, 2015 The driver (who broke no laws that I can discern) needs to have absolutely no legal consequences inflicted upon him. That is the only way to give a clear signal to cyclists that if you break the rules and come to grief because of it, it's your own funeral. No more legal molly-coddling of "vulnerable" road users - if they're vulnerable, they should play their part and at least use the roads legally and sensibly to protect themselves. The courts sometimes have a woolly way of interpreting the law - e.g. arguing that a driver must make sure his surroundings are clear before moving off on a green light etc. Two major problems with that: 1) sometimes the view is obstructed by other vehicles (likely in this case); and 2) sumsabitches on electric bikes or even normal bikes are too damn fast to react to reasonably (which is why they're forbidden from crossings in the first place). Sadly that's how the law works in SG. Not only for more vulnerable road users. In cases where the other party dies, the driver also in trouble even if it isn't his fault. If a motorcycle or car drives recklessly and you get into an accident with them and they die, the first thing that happens is you'll be arrested for causing death by reckless/dangerous driving regardless of whether it is your fault or not. Our law seems to emphasize that drivers are solely responsible for the safety of everyone else on the road. ↡ Advertisement
Little_prince Supersonic September 27, 2015 Share September 27, 2015 Riders like this are like 瘟神 aka pestilence, bringing unnecessary misfortune to their own lives and to anyone unlucky enough to come into contact with them. Just look at his first reaction after the accident, pointing his finger indignantly in the air. He must truly believed that he had the right of way no matter the situation. Believe it or not, they will not stop their self-defeating behavior until they're seriously injured or killed one day. I constantly look out and avoid plagues like this whenever I'm on the road. No matter who had the right of way, you as the driver is already at the losing end as soon as you make contact. You are exactly Right. 👍

Cllee 2nd Gear September 30, 2015 Share September 30, 2015 Saw a poor young kid and old lady nearly knocked down by a reckless cyclist who beat red light. Really cant understand is that really difficult for the cyclists to observe and follow traffic rules? This kind of incident is getting more common here nowadays. https://youtu.be/QRaa0P2FwEo

Leo72 6th Gear September 30, 2015 Share September 30, 2015 even if they want to turn right, I remember I was taught to keep to the left lane, wait for the green man to come on, and PUSH your bike across, and carry on cycling on the LEFT side of the lane. not sure if the rules have change over the years, maybe I am outdated?? Nowadays, cyclists don't know that there are such rules as they're not required to take any test before they start cycling and all they need to do is just buy a bicycle and they can start cycling. That's why you can see cyclists insisting that they're turning right and therefore they should keep to the extreme right lane like a car and cycle. I also don't know where the rules you mentioned above comes from but I do know about this rule. I think it's high time that the traffic police start to come out with programmes to educate the cyclists through the MSM.

Ingenius Turbocharged September 30, 2015 Share September 30, 2015 Recently I noticed there are some electric bicycle on the road, and the rider wears helmet like a motorcyclist. Few times I had to slow down and give way to them for hogging the road just because they are slow and cut ahead. Shouldn't these riders keep out of the road ? When cycling, you are subjected to the same rules and regulations as any other road user so if you are turning right, you have to go from the left lane to the right lane. If the extreme right lane is the only lane allowed to make a right turn, then it is the extreme right lane. I agree with you !! We need to educate everyone on the rules and regulation on using the road. I remember back in primary school going to road safety park was pretty fun. We also need to include into Basic Theory the road traffic (bicycle) act and also the purpose of COE, road tax etc.
