Reckless Cyclist

Really?

You've never had a cyclist:

1. Ride illegally in the center lane causing you to slow down (and possibly missing a traffic light?)

2. Ride in a large group blocking two lanes and yet again causing you to slow down (and possibly missing a traffic light?)

3. Ride illegally across the pedestrian crossing at the last minute while you are attempting a right turn at a junction causing either you or the car in front of you not to be able to make the right turn until the next light?

Please pick a more defensible position before blinding defending cyclists.

Actually,

I'm pretty much with him ...

our car has done 298,000km in the last 9 years -

I don't recall any noticeable delays or problems from cyclists -

I have witnessed dangerous acts, but nothing that has caused me any noticeable problems.

I have had more delays from pedestrians and red light runners, from red plate drivers and from jerks talking on cell phones

In general I make it a rule not to argue with idiots on the web, but in this case I'll make an exception since you've called me a liar.

Typical journey time for me in Singapore is 15 to 20 minutes. Whether it takes 15 or 20 has nothing to do with any cyclists on the road and everything to do with the level of congestion, how other drivers are behaving, roadworks etc.

I once posted a video complaining about a cyclist who cut in at the last minute at a right turn on to Cavenagh Road, from my blind spot just as the lights turned green. The cyclists who saw my video agreed that the cyclist was in the wrong in that instance and that more experienced cyclists would not do that. Anyway, I use this to point out that editing, posting and talking about that incident took up 100x more time than the incident itself and although annoying it did not affect my total journey time.

As to my experience as a driver - well I only do 10,000 km a year so I agree I am not on the road as much as some. But I have been driving since 1988 in, let me see, some 10+ countries (UK, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, US, Canada, Malaysia, South Africa...).

Let me repeat - a cyclist has never increased my total journey time.

how you fail to see that your eg has clearly ''increased'' ur total journey time is really beyond me...

btw... the dislike against cyclists is an accumulated feeling... a singular example does not show anything (i can show you 10more) ... it is a general observation/hatred to the RECKLESS cyclists that they go unpunished for prolonged infringementS of rules...

normal cyclists ... most ppl have ntg against la... (except the biased ones here.. [:p] )

What part of "total journey time" do you not understand?! [laugh] Allow me to explain further as you do seem to be stuck on this: if a journey normally takes me 15 or 20 minutes it still takes me 15 or 20 minutes no matter if I encounter a cyclist along the way. Of course he may slow me down temporarily but it simply is not a factor in my total journey time. In fact I will happily follow a cyclist up to the red light rather than squeeze him out of the way just so he can pass me again in the queue, I let cyclists continue straight ahead rather than cutting ahead of them when I need to turn left. None of these examples of civilised and mature driving etiquette has any bearing on my total journey time.

As to "blinding defending cyclists" sic you will see in my previous post that I mentioned a situation that caused me to upload a video about a cyclist who had annoyed me. It was only later that I reflected that I'd spent more than 100x the time doing that than the original incident.

Possible. I also hardly encounter cyclists that are difficult to overtake. Its the same as overtaking those slow moving vehicles. Just change lane and go. No delay at all.

I have been driving since 1989. I may encounter Cyclists on the road but I will just slow down a little bit and overtake them. Never did I get delay by the cyclists. I encountered group of cyclists but they were driving line by line and so did not really affected me much. Anyway I always pay 100% alert whenever I saw cyclists either on the road or at traffic junction.

Thus, anyone can be as annoying as they want on the road as long as they don't increase other road users' total journey times?

Brilliant...

We must be tolerant and accepting of other people's activties (read: 20 over cyclists riding across two lanes on a two lane road). There is no need to poh mata for a small and insignicant matter. This is the sign of a mature society! Think you missed 好公民 version 2015.

[laugh]

It would increase your blood pressure slightly.

Thanks for emphasizing my point.

The 20 over cyclist should only use 1 lane with 2 abreast.

There are a lot of cyclists in the east, from east coast to changi especially on weekends, they are in 20+, 30+

As drivers just need to be careful la, I always drive to east coast for weekend relaxation

The cyclists go riding and relax too

No matter what, drivers or cyclists also must be alert and careful and focus 100% on the roads

Slight distraction can cost mistakes, big or small, hopefully no one gets injured too

I think the argument is this, all road users plus road infrastructure are going to impact your journey regardless. Whether it be a lorry, truck, the countless traffic lights, taxis stopping and alighting passengers, pedestrians walking slowly across the road, buses q'ing for the bus stop, road hoggers, traffic lights (repeated as there are way too many of them), road construction, not enough lanes, mrt construction diverting traffic, and so on. I think you will find in general that in the main an isolated incident with a cyclist is going to have a negligible impact on your journey time. You have actually wasted more time coming to this site to complain/vent rather than just moving on.

No it doesn't, and by that logic he is right to continue doing that. Hell, he should even jam brake as long as it doesn't increase your total journey time...

We must also be considerate and follow traffic rules and not always rely on other people's tolerance and acceptance... I'm seeing most of the pro-cyclist movement missing this....

Those who think that a bicycle is slowing you down......

....💞 👨👩👧👦 🏩 🚌 🚴🏼 🚛 🚙 🚧 🚕 🚗 🚥 🚚 🚓

Everyone wants to reach home safe & sound to their loved ones....There are more factors to slow you down in a day than just a little vulnerable bicycle...

* road works

* goods vehicles hogging

* taxi picking up fares by the road

* out of syn traffic lights

* traffic jam

* cop on top

* ......or even intentionally walk slowly behind a lady with great a55

If everyone was as enlightened as you. In any case, since Singapore has shamelessly lifted ideas from the UK, it is only a matter of time that cyclist lanes and road signs are introduced. [lipsrsealed]

We can only hope... although so far it seems that the powers that be are happy with things just the way they are... i.e.grey...
