That's selfish, idiotic behaviour that definitely trigger more aggressive response, using flesh to block iron.  Why not just move aside whether aggressive drivers behind or not?  There's only one party that will suffer physical harm in any accident here.

 

It's no difference from road hoggers in lane 1, except that you put yourself in physical danger.

 

If you've cycled on the roads before, you'll know that moving nearer to the kerb when there is an aggressive driver behind is even more dangerous. They will squeeze past you intentionally, going as close as possible. The nice ones will overtake slowly and safely, that's why I will move nearer to the kerb if I see them waiting to overtake.

Only diotic people will think that it is safe to give yourself even less space when there is an aggressive driver behind. Or you are just being selfish as you are one of those who don't think slow moving vehicles should be on the roads.

Lim chu kang road is another area where cyclist like to cycle during sat and sun early morning. Then they occoupy the whole lane. When merging to only 1 lane each direction. It become very challenging to overtake them with some is in big group. So Lan Lan have to follow behind them for some distance.

I usually pass there around 8+am and traffic volume is low.

 

Trucks have no problem overtaking.

I don't trust other drivers - so I don't cycle on the road, only PCN, pavements or trails.  Not worth the risks for me to depend on the good sense and care of others to keep me alive.

That is why I say all this lane sharing is bullcrap.

 

When ever I encounter one along East Coast Road (alot there), I will change lane to overtake, don't want to take chance of side swiping them if they suddenly wobble. That's why It is frustrating for me because essentially you are having a moving road obstruction traveling at 15-30KPH blocking up the whole lane in a 2 lane road.

IMO, if the driver wants to run me over, he would have done so. Same thing - if he wants to squeeze me to the side to overtake, he will do so. So instead of hoping for the aggressive drivers to give me space, I give myself space.

 

Also helps that I cycle same route same timing almost everyday. Encounter mostly the same drivers. Some probably learnt after they received letter from TP when I reported them for overtaking too closely. One school bus driver got charged with hit and run cuz he grazed my handlebar and did not stop even after I shouted at him. Luckily, i left a bigger gap on the left so I just moved left when he touched my handlebar. But that's the only guy I know the outcome cuz it was classified as an accident and I was a victim. The rest, I only received letter saying action taken. But I notice they give me alot more space when overtaking now.

take up whole lane for so long, lorry behind with goods cannot overtake, ram in low gear, all the smoke come out.

on normal days, those worker cycling to work , those lorry over take np, those worker also very zia keep to the very side, lane sharing is this way.

 

our own ppl wear like tour de france, dun even have the skills or confident of those workers

advice them to change their style,  whole big group taking up 1 lane for long stretch is a big problem, the ideal way is to split to many small group keeping a few hundred meter apart, so vehicle can over take group by group.

I was out this morning around 5AM and was finishing my ride down Upper Bukit Timah Road towards Beauty World.  UBT Road at that stretch is 4 lanes, and at those hours, pretty smooth traffic few cars.  Then a van came dangerously close to me - close enough to stretch out and touch the side.  Was I too far out hogging the lane?  No, very close to the double yellow line.  Was I slow?  Around 35kph but comparatively slower than the van. 

 

15 mins later as I crossed Wayang Satu Flyover and close to the filtering lane (outside SCGS), a taxi was on my left.  I was fast but he was faster yet he chose to slow down and indicated for me to come into the left-most lane before he filtered out to my right and took off.  I was not initially on his lane but he waited for me to be safe.

 

I think much as we desire online respect, it's the same on the roads - cyclists and drivers share the road.  Cyclists want to be safe but we also need to be mindful that roads are a shared commodity; we can respect drivers by adhering to road rules (traffic lights), lane discipline and, my view, respecting peak traffic by not demanding entire lane during those hours.

 

It's also about respecting cyclists can have a place on the road.  I tried to keep as left as possible, yet could have been smashed by a van this morning.  We can try to determine the rules of engagement on the roads or PCNs, debate online ferociously, however the mindset of a self-entitled cyclist or driver is often much harder to change not matter how much space you give them. Maybe for those few individuals, it's only him and him alone on the roads.
