Lorry altercation with cyclist at Pasir Ris

In this situation I won't.

The moment I see old folks or those who are more in need, like carrying big bags, heavy suitcases, prams, with children etc.. I will give way.

Personally I feel able people without carrying bulky stuff should just use the escalator or stairs in the MRT station.

Couldn't agree more...its really a pain when we are with someone who is wheelchair bound and had to wait many rounds before we can finally get into the lift (especially shopping mall)...ppl just keep coming and there will be inconsiderate ppl who will just squeeze in front even when they arrive later than us  [crazy]

Already on the left lane then where you want the cyclists to go? I have clarified with TP and as left as possible means the left most lane that the cyclist can cycle on while going on his route. That is why turning right also take the left most lane that allows right turn rather than the right most lane which most cyclists do. Going straight also take the left most lane so cyclists are supposed to move out to the next lane if the left most lane is for left turn only.

What I meant was that the cyclist felt the lorry isn't going to give him enough space when overtaking so he moved out so there will be more space for him if the lorry really squeezed past. But, as I mentioned, I don't agree with him hitting the lorry's mirror. He could have just reported to TP let TP handle the lorry for overtaking dangerously.

This is correct.

When he’s in a wheelchair, ppl may give way

I'm ok with those ah pek cycling on the road. They may not be educated but they are definitely very very considerate...

haha! the other day I was driving behind this ah pek on scooter going at 40km/h with both feet sliding on the road.  [sweatdrop]

I overtook him from the left and the trail of cars that formed up behind were soon high beaming and horning away . . .   [laugh]

Any interesting stories of nurses helping you with a bed bath?

The cyclist was clearly an A$$HOLE (even when stopping he stopped in the middle of the lane) to prevent the lorry from overtaking.  Why are you still trying to say otherwise?  His buddy was instead considerate throughout the video.

At least he got to only spent Christmas eve at a police station, though hospital bed would be more cozy for him.

Most AMDK think they are big F here in sunny SG.

I've seen some AMDKs with written English worse than my sec sch nephew.

Never said he's not being and a**hole or being inconsiderate. In fact, I did mention that he is being inconsiderate. However, legally, still not wrong since he didn't obstruct faster moving traffic unless he even go to the extent of moving to the 1st lane to ensure lorry cannot overtake after lorry go to 1st lane.

At the point of time, maybe he didn't feel safe letting the lorry overtake so he decided to make sure the lorry has to change lanes to overtake instead. Might be inconsiderate but not illegal.

If the lorry had the intention to overtake safely with a 1.5m gap, he probably wouldn't tailgate in the first place and try to squeeze past. He would have signaled, moved further out and then overtake. The cyclist can sense that and gave himself more space but was stupid enough to use his fist and take the law into his own hands as the lorry overtook him.

I don't mean keep to left lane. I was referring to -->

ALWAYS KEEP LEFT, AND GIVE WAY TO FASTER TRAFFIC. Back out on the roads, the law says that “every bicycle shall be ridden close to the left hand edge of the roadway and in such a manner as not to obstruct vehicles moving at a faster speed”.

My interpretation is keep to the left of the lane, like his AMDK friend.

Wow, you are using your anecdotal conversation with an unnamed TP, and then promulgating that as an "updated" cycling rule here. [thumbsdown]

I don't know which is more serious - fake news or fake laws. :a-aggressive:

Riding in a huge group of 10 is inconsiderate to start with, unless it is at the empty Lim Chu Kang runway, or during middle of the night.  this is tiny Singapore, not Tour de France.

Assisting weaker cyclist (unless chio bu - Jamesc would agree) as a reason to ride 2 abreast is stretching too far, unless they are your small kids and you are shielding them from potential danger (then should not be on the road in the first place).

Most of us have no issues with lone cyclists sticking close to the left of the left lanes, indicating their intentions, and obeying traffic rules like stopping for red lights.  It's those who behave like AH (thinking they cannot be identified probably) that turn the driving community against all cyclists.  This video is just one good example.

Reading some of the comments on the video, it is really disheartening to see some people blatantly cheering for the lorry driver or exclaiming that they would've done the same or worse...

No doubt the rider's behavior was uncalled for and certainly deserves to be punished for breaking the lorry's side mirror. Also, none of us really know what is the state of mind of the lorry driver, so no one can really judge who was wrong or right here.

As a cyclist myself, I usually ride single file, unless in a really huge group upwards of 10. But even with 2-3 cyclists, sometimes it also requires me to ride abreast the lane in a two lane road due to circumstances, such as split roads up ahead, or assisting a weaker cyclist. I'm sure many motorists are familiar with the Dunearn Rd exit on PIE (Tuas), and even if you're a lane 3 or 4 driver, you will have to filter to lane 1, road hog a little bit just to make it to the exit. Same goes for cycling, except firstly we try to plan around these situations so we do not encounter them (riding midnight or early morning, avoiding these roads etc.), or we try to be as gracious as possible and get out of that situation ASAP. Of course, life does not always go as planned and you just have to 'harden your scalp' like the Chinese saying, and deal with the uncertain.

As a driver, I understand the frustration of getting stuck behind cyclists in a congested road, driving 20-30 km/h. But if you look at the broader picture, overtaking the cyclist takes only a few seconds to 2 minutes tops even if you're a lousy driver. Compared to your half hour journey perhaps, the inconvenience is really negligible. And it is really a life we are talking about here, imagine these people to be your relatives or even your kids in the future.

After all, my first post on MCF is not out to take sides on the lorry and cyclist saga. Nobody can really fully comprehend the situation others are in and why they do certain things. But above are just some examples, and hopefully more motorists can be gracious about the situation, and not let the actions of a few bad cyclists lead to prejudice of others innocent ones. Motorists and cyclists both can practice gracefulness and be patient to each other.

Peace  [;)]

Did he really stop the lorry from overtaking? Or was he hinting to the lorry that he should change lanes to overtake instead of squeezing past? I don't see the cyclist swinging to the next lane to ensure the lorry cannot overtake. I'm sure if the lorry just switched lanes just like the cam car, he would have been infront of the cyclists in seconds.

There is a cycling lane just parallel to the road.

Is it so difficult to use the bicycle lane instead of hogging the whole lane on the road?

It's against logic for a cyclist to use his arm to shield himself from something that's coming from the back.

Unless it's in the movies.

Yep, why should the cyclist risk breaking his arm by stretching it out?

It may not be the lorry behind but another king kong lorry.

Most people thinks that my previous post was to defend the cyclist, but that wasn't my intention.

In fact I also believe the driver could've been checking out his mirror on the right and thought he/she hit something in the blindspot on the right, not noticing the rider had moved to the left and wrecked his mirror. I for one would never condone someone who takes out their rage on another, especially since the side mirror is something so important to drivers.

I'm not sure how to quote previous replies in the thread... I'll find soon

SuPerBoRed: It is extremely easy for cyclists to merge into one single file and let cars pass, that I can assure you. I am not saying that cars should just bear with the inconvenience. Only that if you encounter them, it could be for a reason like I stated. The cyclist in the video most probably was just inconsiderate.

Enye: All cyclists riding on the road for the first time can feel some distress if cars drive past them close-up, especially if it is large vehicles. I can already foresee what you are going to say, "then don't ride on the road lah!". But everybody have to start somewhere right? So more experienced riders can create a buffer for them in more tight situations until they feel more at ease, just temporarily.

Again, I am not trying to defend the cyclist, the cyclist is not my friend (tsk...). I am just trying to spread more awareness of what cyclists are experiencing from my own experience. So that the bad apples don't spoil the whole basket.

Like i say most of us here is ok to share the road with cyclist 1.

I hate them on the road myself, but it dun mean i cannot accept them.

Just dun bring their A.B.C amdk tour de france culture to singapore road.

This is singapore . Not some angmo country.

Dun think u ride a altas bike all the car on the road must give way to u. ( alot of them behave like that.)

Be humble on the road.

Esp when vehicle is sharing the road with u.

Not the other way round.

Chinese got a saying xianbinduozu.

When the host share his house with u. U dun behave as u own the house.

The big lorries and buses are especially scared of bicycles, I mean seriously which driver wants to face the reality of killing someone and brain matter all over their tires.
