  3. https://mothership.sg/2020/08/malaysian-drive-old-proton/ Hi, I'm Ken. This is my experience of a 27 years old Malaysian guy on driving an old Proton car in year 2020. Ever since graduating from my university on 3 years ago, I've been driving this car as my daily car. Time to sell this old Proton for a new car that is more suitable for someone of my age? Not yet. The car I'm driving is just a 1999 Proton Saga Iswara 1.3 Aeroback. An old car that is as normal as you can get in Malaysia. Not a BMW, Lexus, Audi, Nissan GT-R or any other luxury cars. Owning a new car in Malaysia can be expensive considering the price of a new car per average monthly income ratio. By average, I would say it is easily over RM500 per month for the upkeep of a new car in Malaysia even if it is an entry level car. By average, what was needed for the upkeep of this Proton Saga Iswara per month would be around RM300, inclusive of fuel, maintenance and any random repairs. Yup, that would be around RM3600 per year and it should roughly be enough to keep my car running for a year. It doesn't demand repair every single month of course and those are the months that I can save up more. What have I learned from driving a 21 years old Proton as my daily car? Well, at first during my early days of driving it, I do get a lot of negative feedback from it as it was in quite a poor condition before I restored it. Many recommended me to take up a car loan for a new car instead of wasting my money to fix up this Proton Saga. It is a good thing that I din't or else I would still be paying at least RM500 per month for the 9 years car loan installment at this moment. I haven't even include the costs for fuel and the yearly insurance costs which isn't cheap for a new car. My current income is eligible to sign up for a RM50k to RM60k car loan from a bank but why spend so much per month to pay for a new car that I use as a daily point A to B transport? Not only that, a car value depreciates quickly per year, even faster than the amount that you are paying in a year for some cars. Say if I buy a car for RM60k under a 9 years loan, by the time I finished repaying the loan, the car is probably worth only RM20k by then. RM40k lost in depreciation and I have not even factor in the amount that I've lost in paying interest rates to the bank. Instead of tying myself up under a loan commitment, I'm better off driving this old Proton Saga and save up all the extra money per month. What I can get with the extra money would be flexibility as it can be invested, given to family, saved up for the future, for property, etc. Obviously compared to my similarly aged peers, I look like the sad poor guy who drives an outdated old Proton Saga that his family handed it down to him when others are driving shiny brand new cars with latest technology. Some will even say that I am risking my life because of the poor safety features in this car. Hmm, does that mean that motorcycle riders are battling against life and death daily as they ride out? Or maybe your parents or the older generations are risking their lives too during a few decades ago when they are driving cars like this? I can't say there is a 100% guarantee in road safety regardless of what car that you are driving but having a nearly empty bank account per month due to high commitments is a guaranteed risk in personal finance management.

It cited “difficult business circumstances” as the reason. Screenshot of The French Cellar’s Facebook post The news came as a shock as apparently, there was no prior notice given to subscribers, some of whom have lost “thousands of dollars”. Existing customers will no longer receive the bottles of wine they’ve paid for. Liquidators will be in touch with them and affected customers can “file a proof of debt in respect of [their] wine subscription”, the post stated. No Sour Grapes, Just Relationships Gone Sour Daniel Ogunshakin, a Singapore-based FOX Sports Asia broadcast journalist, shared with Vulcan Post that he has been a customer at The French Cellar for the past 15 months. His Facebook comment expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the company handled his enquiry on his April order that didn’t reach him. Mr Ogunshakin subscribed to The French Cellar as he thought it was a convenient way to try new wines that he otherwise might not have tried. “We were lucky that we only paid on a per-month basis so we only lost $84,” he said. He revealed that the company didn’t inform him beforehand on the ceasing of its operations. “I even called them a week or so ago to ask where my wine was and was told it would be delivered last weekend,” Mr Ogunshakin told us. Ms Lee Hui Ting, however, wasn’t so “lucky”. Like Mr Ogunshakin, she subscribed to The French Cellar because it’s a convenient service. She paid $1,014 including GST, upfront, and received a free wine chiller. Ms Lee, who was a customer since July 2018, was surprised by the news and thought something was wrong when no one answered her call on Monday (27 May). “[The] number was unavailable when I called again on Wednesday. Only saw the post when I searched on Facebook.” Her order earlier this year was also delayed and the company also made a mistake on her order in March, which would have been correctly fulfilled in the past. Left with three more months of her subscription that can’t be fulfilled, Ms Lee said she will lose about $250. One of the subscribers who spoke to The Straits Times (ST) shared that they have already lodged a police report. This subscriber had signed up for the 12 months plan last November, paying an average of $143 a month, but she has only received four months’ worth of deliveries. According to her, The French Cellar blamed its tardy deliveries on the strikes that were happening in France, but she found that reason “rubbish”. He said that some 20 people attended the event and were given different wines and cheese to try. “It was a pretty good session. Not pushy. Very informative. Anyone [was] free to leave at any time,” he recounted. “And the sales guy, I think is one of the founders (sic), was conducting the event.” The software engineer told us he signed up after the session ended, so he’s been a customer since May 2018. He revealed that his subscription costs $84.53 monthly and he noticed in January 2019 that his order was delayed. They called me as well,” Roy said in a WhatsApp conversation with this writer. He lost about $168 so far as his April and May deliveries did not arrive. Roy was advised to cancel his credit card to stop the recurring charges, and he’s “glad” that he did not sign up for the annual subscription plan the company has been promoting, with the incentive of a free wine chiller. But he sincerely believes that The French Cellar sold good wines that was “value for money”. “Their service had been good up till January this year. So, I guess something must have gone very wrong by end-2018,” he guessed. What Could Have ‘Wine’ Wrong? Founders of The French Cellar / Image Credit: Qoo10 Founded in 2013 by Eric Joubert and Vincent Morello, The French Cellar wanted to make exclusive French wines selected by its sommelier accessible here. They dubbed themselves as the pioneer subscription company for wine and has delivered over 100,000 boxes in its five years of operations, their website stated. Customers can choose from three different tiers that suit their wine-drinking preferences. For the 12-month plans, monthly subscription fees range from $88 to $288. Those who don’t wish to commit to a year-long subscription can choose the “Pay As You Go” plan that starts at $108 per month, with the highest tier costing $328 a month. Every month, customers will receive two different bottles of wines with wine-tasting notes. ST reported that the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) had received five complaints against The French Cellar between 26 to 30 May, with claims worth a total of at least $5,000. It is highly possible that the business has been affected greatly by the “strikes” that happened in France. Based on The French Cellar’s email response to Mr Loi, we would assume that certain partnerships may have fell through, thus causing the “delays”. Going by the number of engagement on its Facebook, the company perhaps doesn’t have a wide enough customer base to sustain overheads. The business is targeting a niche market, seeing as they import wine directly from different French regions. Of course, accepting orders and money from consumers while knowing that their company will never be able to deliver is a dishonest move and only puts them in an even worse light. On top of that, announcing their closure on Facebook is sure to leave a sour taste in anyone’s mouth. The French Cellar’s website is still fully operational at the time of publishing.   6. Now I believe this PM was in reference to a post that i mentioned my friend was planning for retirement this year at the age of 36. The main reason i didn't reply to this boh liao PM was that it's not even your business what my friend does. And i was outside when i got this PM, so i dismissed it just like junk mail. More amused than anything else. I'm sure everyone in this forum knows someone who's just doing so well outside in the monetary/rat race that he's miles ahead of everyone else. While authorities have not been able to fully accommodate all wishes, many of the views have been taken into consideration. For instance, the decision to embark on a serious documentation of the affected graves was a result of advice received from the Heritage Society. He said the Land Transport Authority had also factored in feedback in its design of the road to minimise impact to the cemetery. Show Swei 5 hours ago The exact same experience happened to me -- I was told my Infinity membership was revoked about a year ago due to late payments. I spoke at length to a CalFit manager, and subsequently wrote a lengthy email to headquarters in Hong Kong, but was delivered the news that the appeal was rejected. I even offered to pay an additional late fee above the $8 late payments, buy they claimed that because I had paid previous $8 fees before, I "had no excuse for unknowing late payments". Since then, I have decided to boycott California Fitness due to poor customer service. I enquired how come I wasn't even given a late notice reminder, but was rebuffed that "their policy has changed". When she tried to use the gym their reply was "sorry you did not pay the admin fee ". When she protested that she did not receive any reminder they bluntly told her that she should keep track of when she should pay the admin fee. You want to use the facilities then pay $3000 for the membership. This is big news. I hope all the newspapers here and hong kong and mediacorp report this unscrupulous gym operator. To simplify my story, I suspended my menbership and personal training program because I got pregnant, had a misscarriage, took time to recover, got pregnant again and delivered a healthy baby. All these while I thought I could continue with my membership and P.T program after my delivery. To my great dissapointment, California Fitness told me that my 'LIFETIME' membership had EXPIRED bacause I had not paid my annual $8 fee. On top of that my P.T program had also expired because the max time they allow members to suspend their membership was 1 year. I had lost not only the few thousand dollars worth of membership but also estimated 3.5K worth of P.T sessions. His was over due for 2 weeks due to outstation but they refuse to accept the explanation instead he was told to re purchase the membership again if he is still keen to use the facilities. Yes, there may have been a clause. And yes, it is the customer's responsibility to read them even though the agent/salesperson may have failed to highlight it. However, 'throwing' out customers who have paid $3000 each for a lifetime membership just because they have missed the deadline for the $8 payment? Shocking and unbelievable. One cannot help but think that any company that prides itself on providing good service to their customers, and have basic respect and regard for them -- potential, past or current ones -- would have reacted differently. I wonder if there were any attempts made to the customers to remind them of the $8 payment. And was there any customer service officer who were present or who contacted the couple to alley their fears and questions? From the writer's experience, it sure sounds like the company adopted a firm 'No, you're out. No space for negotiation or clarifications. It's your fault you did not read the clauses nor pay up on time. Unhappy? Then bring it to CASE'. The only 'human touch' here seems to be the receptionist who conveyed the outright rejection of her superiors, and even borders on smugness with an unspoken challenge to 'bring the matter to CASE. All this does not bode well with the integrity of the company at all. In the long run, greed and a lost of good, sturdy values will bring them to their knees. I truly cannot comprehend how such a case can exist. It is mind boggling. I definitely will have to read every single fine print on all membership documents before signing them. Also, i think due to the complexity of some words on such agreement, I think it is best to be vetted by a lawyer. There must be posters put up around Singapore to remind consumers to be very very careful in taking up membership of any form, when the membership amount is high.. I happened to be a california gym member and I remembered that there was a clause stating contract termination if I fail to make payment on time, I make it a point to pay in advance and to check with the reception regularly. Like ReplyReply shantelle88 1 day ago I am a true fitness member and I wouldn't say it's more expensive than other gyms (you can bargain actually). They regularly maintain facilities and call in advance to inform you of any membership renewal or late payment (if there is). Before this I went to California fitness for trial and had a terrible experience with their staff attitude and the way they do things. I was speechless. CASE also mentioned there were many victims of California Fitness Centre (CFC) of this case. Life Membership or Platinium? I had the same problem, I had a overseas assignment for 5 years and when I came back and happy march into Fitness Center, they refuse my entry and told me that they no longer do Life membership and I have to buy a new membership for I did not pay the yearly $8 renewal fees (without any reminders from them). The Staff the sold me the membership- Atiq Chowdhury and the Personal Trainer who became the GM of Novena Branch-Collin both said they could not do anything and that's their policy from Hong Kong. But for now and even next week, an outcome is unlikely, according to Mr Chandra Mohan from law firm Rajah and Tann, who is on the school's board of governors. It is believed that the board met on Saturday to look into a complaint against Dr Ong. It has been a tough time for Dr Ong. Two days after news broke about his sudden resignation as principal of ACS (I) and a complaint lodged against him, Dr Ong was brought by ambulance to hospital for breathing problems on Wednesday. Dr Ong, who had multiple bypass surgery two years ago, was discharged from the National University Hospital on Friday. It is believed that Dr Ong is back at his home at the ACS boarding house in Dover Road. When asked about the complaint against Dr Ong, former chairman of the ACS board of governors, Tan Wah Thong, said: "Let us be neutral and listen to both sides of the story." Dr Ong had been at the helm of ACS (I) since 1994 and under his watch, the school has grown to become one of the top educational institutions in Singapore.
