  1. Meanwhile, whilst Covid is still around.... https://www.bbc.com/news/health-53218704?at_custom3=BBC+News&at_custom2=facebook_page&at_custom4=1148D5C6-BA40-11EA-8D3C-B0574D484DA4&at_custom1=[post+type]&at_campaign=64&at_medium=custom7&fbclid=IwAR2-uNadmc3vl1cGIdkvNFnXCF8mA6cY3f-7uWIKozZcqCs80Ds9gX5mhTU&fbclid=IwAR3s4A_HIa0m1GFExTdWKfOxTuNiOd7zp_8Yp7p17dZDXx9jA0vmKr13-14 Pandemic threat A bad new strain of influenza is among the top disease threats that experts are watching for, even as the world attempts to bring to an end the current coronavirus pandemic. The last pandemic flu the world encountered - the swine flu outbreak of 2009 that began in Mexico - was less deadly than initially feared, largely because many older people had some immunity to it, probably because of its similarity to other flu viruses that had circulated years before. Coronavirus: This is not the last pandemic Does the UK have coronavirus under control? Worst could be 'yet to come' in coronavirus pandemic That virus, called A/H1N1pdm09, is now covered by the annual flu vaccine to make sure people are protected. The new flu strain that has been identified in China is similar to 2009 swine flu, but with some new changes. Media captionSearching for viruses in Thai bats - watch scientists collect samples from the animals in order to look for clues about coronaviruses So far, it hasn't posed a big threat, but Prof Kin-Chow Chang and colleagues who have been studying it, say it is one to keep an eye on. The virus, which the researchers call G4 EA H1N1, can grow and multiply in the cells that line the human airways. They found evidence of recent infection starting in people who worked in abattoirs and the swine industry in China. Current flu vaccines do not appear to protect against it, although they could be adapted to do so if needed. Prof Kin-Chow Chang, who works at Nottingham University in the UK, told the BBC: "Right now we are distracted with coronavirus and rightly so. But we must not lose sight of potentially dangerous new viruses." While this new virus is not an immediate problem, he says: "We should not ignore it." Prof James Wood, head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, said the work "comes as a salutary reminder" that we are constantly at risk of new emergence of pathogens, and that farmed animals, with which humans have greater contact than with wildlife, may act as the source for important pandemic viruses.

  5. Hi all, I suppose most Singaporean cars don't get to utilize to their max potential. For example, running at top speed, hitting max torque, endurance run at x hours continuously. Do you think you are getting every cents worth from your car ? or do you equate money worth with ride comfort...and spend most of the time alone in the car . Regards,
  6. Newspaper said there's a soilder tried to escape from tekong (presumably) by swimming from the island towards mainland. Is the training so bad he had to escape? or life is too boring there he decided to get away? Maybe he trained hard swimming before enlistment, BMT has no swimming training, he siang and wanted to come back to continue his previous training?
  7. Looks quite bad...Australia is affected and I guess NZ too. Hopefully all these recent problems clear up before the year end travel season. ----- http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/W...ory_680111.html Jun 15, 2011 Chile volcano could get worse, as travel woes grow People sleep at Jorge Newbery airport where flights were cancelled due to an ash cloud that reached Buenos Aires from the Chilean Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano grounding air travel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. -- PHOTO: AP SANTIAGO - A CHILEAN volcano spewing dangerous ash high into the sky, sowing air travel havoc from South America to Australia for the past week, could have even more intense eruptions in the days to come, government geologists warned. 'It is possible there will be a return to increased eruptive activity' of the Puyehue volcano in southern Chile's Andes mountains, which started belching June 4, Chile's National Geological and Mines Service said late Tuesday. It said it was detecting no let-up in the volcano's emissions, which were towering eight kilometers into the troposhpere. It maintained its alert level at 'moderate eruption.' That was bad news for airlines flying into or over Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Brazil, and - half a world away - Australia. Passengers in those regions have had to ditch aircraft for travel by boat or overland, or cancel plans entirely. The chaos recalled the massive paralysis of air travel over Europe in 2010 when an Icelandic volcano erupted. Among the millions of passengers affected was UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, who on Tuesday had to take a slow boat from Argentina to Uruguay as he pursued a Latin America tour to secure support for his bid for another five-year term. From the Uruguayan capital Montevideo, Mr Ban was scheduled to go on to the Brazilian capital Brasilia. But a UN official speaking in New York on condition of anonymity said: 'At the moment, we have no idea how he will get there.' -- AFP
  8. ...thing is, will the maid do it for him?? http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...n_who_made.html SAF will take appropriate action against serviceman who made maid carry backpackEnraged26%Shiok!26%LOL!29%So sad4%Sure or not?1%Bochup14%The Singapore Armed Forces says it will investigate the case of a national serviceman who had apparently made his maid carry his backpack, and take the appropriate action. The response came after a photo was posted in STOMP, showing a young man dressed in army fatigues walking in front of a woman carrying what seemed to be his backpack. The story was later picked up by The Straits Times. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said in response to the report in The Straits Times that "the SAF takes a serious view of the conduct of its servicemen in public" and that it will investigate and take the appropriate action. The story had sparked a debate among STOMPers, on whether Gen Y soldiers are too 'soft', 'spoilt' and 'pampered'. There are some, however, who wondered if a shoulder injury had prompted the 'maid' to carry the backpack for the serviceman.

  11. Porsche and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are issuing a recall for the 2010 Panamera for a potential seat belt defect that could leave the driver unprotected in the event of a crash. NHTSA says the defect can occur when either front seat is put in an "extreme position," which could lead to the seat belt mount being detached from the anchoring mechanism while the belt is fastened or opened. The post-jump NHTSA release doesn't explain what an "extreme position" is, though we're guessing that the safety administration is referring to a seat that is either very close to or very far away from the dash (see UPDATE below). But while we don't know which seat positions could cause the problem, we do know that the result could be serious. NHTSA says that, in the event of a crash, the seat belt may not adequately protect the front seat occupant. Th agency's release states that there are up to 3,176 units affected by the safety action. Panamera owners (congratulations!) can take their vehicle to the nearest Porsche dealer, where an additional locking element will be installed onto the belt anchoring system to correct the issue. Hit the jump to read over the official press release. *UPDATE: Porsche spokesman Gary Fong tells Autoblog: "The company has discovered that in extreme forward front seat positions the front safety belts do not meet our strict safety standards. To assure the front belts works properly in all possible positions, Porsche will add an additional element to the anchoring system. The repair takes about 15 minutes and will be done free of charge. No injuries or fatalities have been associated with this recall."
  12. Mon, Mar 22, 2010 The Star/Asia News Network SOME insurance companies in Johor are recruiting female agents to have sex with potential customers, Guang Ming Daily re-ported. The companies also arranged for the agents to party with the would-be clients at nightclubs and karaoke outlets. Sources told the newspaper that the female agents were recruited among divorcees, single mothers or those helping their boyfriends repay debts. "These are women who will do anything for money," the sources said, adding that the agents went after middle-aged small entrepreneurs who were not very highly educated. Agents who failed to "hit" their targets would be punished by having to "showcase" themselves in adult diapers or lingerie. They were also forced to pay fines of between RM1,000 and RM3,000 to their company.
  13. Do you agree or he is like planning his "road" to become Singapore's first elect president Monday, October 20, 2008 Right and decent thing to do for your citizens Extracted from: http://comment.straitstimes.com/showthread...?t=14228&page=2 If a war were to start today, the govt will immediately mobilise our NSmen in the country ' s defence, I have no doubt about that. NSmen will be reminded of their pledge to protect the nation and no doubt the PM and his cabinet will go whole hog on national TV to remind NSmen that they would be defending not only the country but their loved ones and remind them of the consequences should the enemy were to overrun this place. But when there is a crisis such as the present when thousands of Singaporeans watch helplessly as their life savings are going to literally disappeared into thin air THE SILENCE OF THE PM AND HIS CABINET IS VERY VERY DEAFENING AND TELLING INDEED! What has happened to all those theories about social, economic, military and psychological defence under the oft-repeated TOTAL DEFENCE concept promulgated by the govt? Are they all merely theories? Intended merely as propaganda to keep Singaporeans in line only? This current financial threat has dealt a massive blow to not only the economic defence but perhaps more importantly, the PSYCHOLOGICAL DEFENCE OF SINGAPOREANS, thousands of whom have been accummulating through several decades of hard toil, sweat and even blood, funds for their retirement and old age, since the govt don ' t believe in welfarism. Didn ' t the govt, esp. the MM, said many many times before that the country ' s reserves is for a rainy day. Hasn ' t it been rainly badly enough on Singaporeans lately? How really bad must things get before Singaporeans may expect the govt to deign it bad ' enough ' to come to their rescue? Perhaps, some mass suicide? It is amazing that while it is all right to dump billions and billions into the BLACK HOLE of the likes of failed/failing American and European financial institutions, the govt seems to deem it fit to watch the unfolding drama and tragedy being played out at Hong Lim Park and in the mass media, with arms folded in apparent disinterest. This it is doing against a global background of countries like Hong Kong underwriting the losses of its citizens caught in this massive fraud. No, not this govt here, it would seems! It would prefer to watch the carnage of its citizens, without even a speck of guilty conscience that the govt, esp. the MAS, has a part to play for the desperate situation the citizens are in because it has failed to be good gatekeepers by allowing such high risk products for sale to innocent citizens whose only fault was to stretch their dollar (so that they might be less reliant on charity in their old age and the country in general). Instead, we see very obvious signs that the govt will be the last among nations to help its citizens AND only if whatever actions it follows will protect its competitiveness, not that it is the right and decent thing to do for your citizens. 14. Hi all, I have recently noticed that my starter seem to take longer to start up my engine after 3 years of use and while this is no surprise in itself, what scares me is at times, the starter just crank and stop dead even when the key still remains in turned position. Anything wrong here and would appreciate advice on what needs to be changed. Many thanks! GC

  16. Anwar's conditions for DNA testing Sat, Jul 19, 2008 The Star KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will not agree to the DNA process "until we are absolutely certain that whatever samples taken from him and whatever tests, are conducted independently, professionally and without interference by the police," his lawyer R. Sivarasa said. However, at a later function in Malacca, Anwar said he was unafraid and willing to provide DNA samples but was concerned over tampering of evidence that he claimed had befallen him 10 years ago on a similar charge. "They asked me what I was afraid of ... I'm not afraid to give my blood ... but I know they fabricate and that is my problem," he told supporters who had gathered to hear him speak in Jalan Cheng-Tanjung Minyak. Meanwhile, Sivarasa said the offer to allow Anwar to pick his own doctors to conduct the DNA test would not solve the problem, as there was the fear that the final report of the test and samples would be tampered with. He said statements by Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar were tantamount to interfering in ongoing investigations. Syed Hamid had suggested that Anwar pick his own doctors to examine his DNA sample and that he had nothing to fear. Sivarasa told a press conference at Anwar's home in Segambut yesterday that a court order to force the PKR adviser to give his DNA sample was not permissible under Malaysian law. He also reminded the authorities that police still had Anwar's DNA from the earlier case. Sivarasa said the police bail for Anwar's release was RM10,000 and not RM150,000 as reported.

  19. The Nissan Sunny leather seats are not 100% leather. It is 1/2 leather, meaning only those places where your body has contact with are genuine leather (the bum and backrest area). Th rest of the seats (sides and back) are actually PVC (otherwise called synthetic leather). The PVC looks and feels exactly like leather, but if you press your fingers against the PVC, the surrounding area is smooth, no ceases. When you press your fingers against genuine leather, you see ceases in the surrounding area round your finger. Realised this only when I sat in my friend's 1 month old Sunny today. My friend was shocked too. He said Tan Chong's SE told him the car seats are "leather", but neveer mentioned anything that it is actually 1/2 leather. Pick up OK, but had to rev to at least 3,000 rpm esp in 1st 2 gears to get adequate pick up (auto). Engine relatively quiet.
