Commonwealth Games: Shooter Jasmine Ser wins Singapore’s fourth gold

GLASGOW - Singapore clinched its fourth gold medal at the Commonwealth Games early on Wednesday with shooter Jasmine Ser winning the women’s 50m rifle three positions final.

She beat Scotland's Jen McIntosh with a score of 449.1 points to 446.6. India's Lajja Gauswami took the bronze with 436.1 points.

It was a close fight between Ser and home favourite McIntosh. Going into the final shot, Ser led 439.3 points against McIntosh's 438.7 points. But McIntosh shot a dismal 7.9 points, and a confident Ser hit 9.8 points to take top spot.

The Republic's other gold medal victories were in men's and women's team table tennis, and the women's 10m air pistol event.

i blame the govt for setting unrealistic expectations for the sports association.

 

remember Mah bow tan promise to bring singapore to the world cup in 2010? because of nonsense targets like this, that all the sports association want to take the easy way out and bring in "talents" to hit their short term target.

 

forgetting that every space that a so- called talented foreigner takes up is one less spot for a real singaporean.

 

MINISTER MAH'S PARTING SHOT - 'WE WILL DO IT'

He may have departed his post as Football Association of Singapore president, but Minister for National Development Mah Bow Tan is still a believer.

Speaking at his farewell lunch at the Amara Hotel on Friday afternoon, Mr Mah was adamant that Singapore would make it to the FIFA World Cup finals one day.

"We will make it. I have no doubt whatsoever that we will make it," said Mr Mah, who undersaw the birth of the Goal 2010 project during his 13 year tenure at the FAS.

"It's about getting Singaporeans to dare to dream. We'll get there, whether it be in 2014, 2018 or later, we willl keep trying. Nothing is impossible, we just have to change the mindset."

Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, who is taking over as FAS President from Mr Mah, paid tribute to the man who started as an advisor with the FAS in 1991.

"What should be remembered is that even when we were at our low points, Mr Mah, as leader, remained positive and optimistic," said Associate Professor Ho.

"Just as when a team is down 3-0, every player must still give 110%. As skipper, he urged us on. This is the true fighting spirit that we in the FAS will continue to display."

During his time at the FAS, Mr Mah was involved in the Lions' 1994 Malaysia Cup win, the birth of the S.League in 1996 as well as the national team's win in the Tiger Cup in 1998, a tournament that he had helped push for.

In 1999, Mr Mah oversaw the introduction of legalised betting for the S.League. He was also part of Singapore football's most ambitious project ever - Goal 2010.

As part of the Goal 2010 project, Mr Mah directed the restructuring of the FAS' youth development structure, established the National Football Academy and Centres of Excellence and brought about the Foreign Talent Scheme.

A string of former Lions captains from Terry Pathmanathan, Nazri Nasir, Lim Tong Hai and current national team captain Aide Iskandar were on hand to present Mr Mah with a signed Lions jersey.

Also attending the lunch were FAS vice-presidents Zainudin Nordin, Tan Soo Nan, Lt-Gen (RET) Ng Jui Ping and other committee members, the senior national team and the Young Lions as well as media.

Further, even from a Sing Inc point of view, it does not resonate with me either, as the distribution of wealth within the Corporation is so wide.

In my humble opinion, the idea of getting FT to represent S'pore in Sports is to raise the standards of locals ie exposing them to the higher standards, discipline, mental strength, professionalism and even diet required of world class athletes.

 

S'pore should not lose sight of this objective so locals should be encouraged to match/learn from the FTs. In theory, this should work if all serious sportsmen and the relevant sports associations pull in the same direction.

 

Trouble is some associations get carried away with the success/medals and for the sake of glory use the FT to achieve these goals. This would then be mercenary and will bring no pride to our country.

 

TT and Badminton has slowly inducted locals into the team ie Isabelle, Clarence, Derek and Vannessa. This should be the way forward but abit too slow for my liking. That said not easy to find local talents willing to sacrifice for the sake of Sports.

 

In summary, let's not lose focus on our objectives and to support the FT whilst ensuring more locals benefit from playing with them!

It's not yours, but merely for boasting sake.

 

If you talk about boosting sports to world class level, what you need is world class coach to kick butt of the local athletes.
