eh.....without the video shooter this incidence will never surface in mm.....he/she also a 'hero'.

Don't know the intention of the videographer, but yeah, I'm glad that he/she did take the video. Though calling that person a 'hero' is a bit far fetched, imho.

low income can afford a ipad?

Or rather they prefer to spend the money on ipad than grille to protect their kids.

An iPad can entertain the kids for hours, what can a grille do other than maybe save the life of one kid once? Or twice?

I've helped out with some community service events where MPs gave out food baskets (more like just packets of essential foods) to the low income. They live in rental apartments, in which two families can share one small apartment, they have very low income, unstable jobs, but some guys still manage to smoke 1/2 to 1 a pack of ciggies a day. Or have smartphones, but no money for milk.

Or other small luxury rather than something important.

Maybe some of them might have been given those as gifts. But fact of the matter is still some of the low income will still rather spend money on luxury / keeping up with the Joneses than spend money on necessities.

There is a reason why some people remain low income for the rest of their lives. They can't be too good at managing their money if they can't even tell if spending money on an ipad or grille is more important.

I have come across such families too when I was helping out. Some get multiple assistances eg. From gov, some NGO and help from individuals, etc which add up to quite a bit of money. Yet, instead of using it on essentials and save up the rest for rainy days, they spent it on TV, cable subcription, beer, ciggrattes, eating out, etc

It is always easy to play the blame game or play the judge.

I always remind myself that I am not in their position and stress. I am passing comments based only on my experience and would this consider fair.

When one is extremely busy and no time even for a meal, we sometimes do silly things or make silly decisions. When one is under stress, mind you, that everybody takes stress differently, some may even decide to take their own life.

The best that we can do, as a society, neighbour or family member, is to find ways so that incidents like this don't repeat itself.

In my own humble experience, sometimes we forget that people are still people despite their nationality, colour, race or religion. As in any society there are the extremes, the very good and the very bad. In several of my MRT trips I have seen bangla or indian workers (cant differentiate the two) getting up and offering seats to the old or pregnant while many of the able bodies pretend and remain seated.

My travel brings me several times to Taiwan, Taipei, and if you take their MRT you will realised that almost always no young able body persons sit on the blue chairs designated for the old, injured, pregnant and child even if the train is full. This is something I admired very much about the Taiwan people.

It is nearly always all about social education, how we respect each other in our society regardless of education or wealth or even race. It means that role models must be found not only from top down but also bottom up.

What do you think?

Watch the CNA's TV programme "Don't Call Us Poor". Some might be featured there.

It is always easier to comment when you can afford both

It's always easier to comment than to do, this I wholeheartedly agree. But maybe if enough comments were made, the person who is being commented about might actually do something to change his / her behaviour, for better or for worse.

Ah well, I'm just commenting too. Haha..

Yes I agree. Whether there was grill or not was not really the problem. The mother left the child alone in the house. Low income or not was also not the issue. Rich or poor, there is no reason to leave a child without supervision. Toddler could jolly well go into the kitchen and play with stove, knifes, etc... anything could happen.

What do you think?

Singapore was built upon survival instincts which means the best thrives and the less able scrap the bottom. Graciousness was never a by word.

Maybe this is a legacy of LKY. SURVIVAL first. People will only give back when they think they have enough. The bar however is always bring raised. The older generation is more gracious. The FW is more gracious.
