  1. I'm having a bit of difficulty finding this information. What's shared between the 2? Definitely the engine. Gearbox/Suspension/the rest? I'm guess the suspension is not. But the gearbox?
  2. Today's Life section mentioned that this new car will be available from end Sept 2008. Price at S$85.8k. This is basically to replace the out going Golf 1.6FSI. This car is also the 1st car to have this new 7 Speed DSG new gear box with dry clutch. It can cruise at 90km/h at 1800 RPM....seems good What do you guys think? Do we need 7 speed in Singapore? http://www.channel4.com/4car/rt/volkswagen/golf/16740/2 http://www.channel4.com/4car/gl/volkswagen/golf/16739/6

  7. Taken from AutoCar 19th July Issue: Britain's New GTi King : Scorching Astra thrashes Golf GTi and Megane Cup exerpts from the article regarding the new Astra VXR/OPC "The suspension is probably the Astra's finest moment. Thanks inpart to Vauxhall/Opel's German in-house tuning arm OPC, but mainly, you suspect, to the skills of Lotus, which was closely involved with the chassis from the beginning, this is arguably the most focused car ever to wear a Vauxhall/Opel badge" "behind the 225/40 ZR 18" CSC tyres nestle the biggest front brake discs (321 mm) to adorn any Vauxhall/Opel, even at the rear, it boasts dinner plate-sized 278mm discs. There is also anti-lock, ABD and Brake Assist for good measure" "on the move, the Astra is quick with a capital F, and has moves that are way beyond anything the Golf can muster, if not the Megane, a device fast enough to dispatch all but a very small number of so-called performance cars, only a well-driven Caterham or an EvoBishi with a Genuine nutter at the wheel would be quick enough to put clear air between themselves and the Astra" "the Golf is nowhere by comparison, featuring neither the straight line wallop nor the heroically well-tied down chassis composure of the Astra. Critically, the Golf doesn't even ride as smoothly as the Astra over tricky piece of road" "the Astra is appreciably neutral when cornering; 237bhp and fwd means torquesteer off the line" "the Megane's ride is too hard to the point of irritation on anything other than glass-smooth roads, and to begin with the steering feels too light, too darty, not feelsome enough and nowhere near as faithful to the Astra's" "there is something about the Renault that doesn't quite work overall. It's one of those strange hot hatches that's fast, very fast, but that's it. There's not really a whole lot more to it's vocabulary -- and therefore appeal-- than sheer pace. In the end, it trails the others (Golf and Astra) by some margin" "the Golf is the most complete package here, true, but in this instance complete packaging can take a hike. real hot hatches, ones that we remember fondly for year to come, are meant to look good, go like clappers, handle and ride beautifully enough to make you weep-- and blow cars as sensible and complete as the new Golf GTi into the weeds. Torquesteer and all, that's precisely what the Astra does. Which is why it wins, easily" Opel/Vauxhall Astra OPC/VXR 0-62mph 6.2sec Power 237bhp Torque 236lb/ft power to weight 170bhp per tonne 4 cyls in line 1998cc, turbo 6 speed manual Front MachPherson Struts, coil springs, anti-roll bar Rear Torsion beam, coil springs Front brakes 321mm bentilated discs Rear brakes 278mm ventilated discs Wheels 8JX 18in alloy Airbags Driver, passenger, side and curtain Stability Control Yes Traction Control Yes Brake Assist Yes
  8. HI All, Please share your views on the Golf GTI especially owners. Does not matter if it is the old or latest model. Would like to understand more from those with everyday driving experience. Others please comment too, just share share. How do you rate it? Do you think there is a better car for less money? Why? Driving an Integra now. Backside itchy, thinking of changing. Thanks a lot.
  9. VW has this so call Ltd Ed Golf GTI , Red colour only, fabric seats, 17 inch rims and No HID going for about $85K with COE tag at $4K. OMV is estimated to be about $25K. This works out to be $7K odd a year. Cheaper than all the used GTIs on Sg CarMart. The question is : How is this car and is there any drawback on this model?

  11. CNA report : Golf: Woods will become world's first billionaire athlete by 2010 Posted: 10 July 2008 0907 hrs NEW YORK - Tiger Woods is on pace to pass one billion US dollars in career earnings by 2010, becoming the world's first billionaire to accumulate his fortune by playing sports, says Forbes Magazine. The 14-time major championship winner earned 115 million US dollars in 2007 alone, said the American magazine which annually ranks the world's richest people with its Forbes' Celebrity 100 list. English footballer David Beckham was the No. 2 sportsman on the list with earnings of 65 million US dollars."It will be an unprecedented occurrence," the magazine said. "There are plenty of billionaires who have excelled at sports like Switzerland's richest man and champion sailor Ernesto Bertarelli. But there are no billionaires who accumulated their fortune by playing sports." The magazine goes on to say in its Wednesday edition that while tycoons like Bill Gates accumulated his wealth by holding a stake in a company with soaring profits, Woods is unique because his massive fortune was earned through pay cheques. Woods is a sports marketers' dream, having earned more than 750 million US dollars in endorsement deals to date in his career. At 32, Woods has won 50 tournaments faster than any player and is closing in on Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major championship wins. I want to play golf......
  12. Motoring @ AsiaOne 3-week old VW Golf GTI faces gearbox glitch Model has been available here since 2005, but glitch is said to affect only this year's batch. Christopher Tan Thu, Oct 11, 2007 The Straits Times HOMEMAKER Beverly Wong was overjoyed when her husband bought her a brand new red VW Golf GTI for her 38th birthday last month. Her euphoria lasted all of three weeks. Last Saturday when she was out with her hubby and 22-month-old son at around 5pm, the three-week-old $120,000 200-horsepower performance car got stuck in first gear. "It happened suddenly. Then the lights indicating the gear positions started flashing wildly, and we just couldn't get the transmission to change gear,'' Ms Wong said. "We even tried going to manual mode, by using the paddle shifters on the steering column.'' The GTI is equipped with a high-tech double-clutch semi-automatic transmission called DSG. VWs with DSG here include the Jetta, GT and R32. Volkswagen Singapore, the manufacturer-owned importer, distributor and retailer of VWs here, admitted that Ms Wong's car had a "gearbox failure", and that it was the second such case in a month. It was unable to say what the problem was, but said "DSG is a very reliable and solid gearbox and we have had minimal issues in the many cars we've sold so far". The Golf GTI has been available here since 2005, but the glitch is said to affect only this year's batch of cars. Up to September this year, Volkswagen sold 81 GTI's here. But the transmission breakdown was only half the disappointment Ms Wong felt. After calling the Volkswagen roadside assistance hotline, she waited half an hour for service personnel to arrive. They told her the car needed to be towed back to the workshop as it had a major fault that could not be fixed there and then. She was handed a taxi voucher; and was told that a tow truck would arrive within the hour. It turned up three hours later at 7.45 pm. She also complained that the company did not arrange a temporary car for her. "This is a premium car I bought, and it's barely 3-1/2 weeks old. They should have given me a temporary car to use,'' Ms Wong said. "We had a baby with us, and a lot of bulky things in the car, including a childseat.'' After haggling with Volkswagen Singapore, she finally got a replacement car, which arrived at 9pm. All in, she and her family wasted four hours of a Saturday evening. "I know mechanical things do break down. I was from the car industry, so I know,'' said the former staff of Audi distributor Premium Automobiles, fuming. "But Volkswagen should have helped make the bad experience a little more bearable. I am totally disappointed with their service.'' Volkswagen Singapore spokesman Deborah Chia said: "We view this incident with much unhappiness. We empathise with the customer and will rectify the situation immediately" ================= any comments on service from VW Spore ever since they took over from Cars and cars ? just want to know how good the after sales is like !

  17. Is 0-100km/hr 6.9s in today's standard still considered hot? Many normal family cars can also achieve 8s for the sprint. http://motoring.asiaone.com/Motoring/Test%...3-154395/3.html
  18. Hi, Anyone saw the white VW Golf GT/GTi crashed along Alexandra road just outside the Horti Park this morning 7+am? Saw TP there at the scene, seems like car hit tree and verve off into the drain. Front totaled, airbags deployed. Didnt see any driver or bodies in the wrecked car... but looked very serious accident. Such a good car gone to waste just like that... Looks like insurance premium going up again! Cheers Orac

  21. Hi all, im lookg for 2nd hand golf sets... any one has any shop to recommend?
  22. Hi people, I am asking this on behalf of a friend who is thinking of buying a new manual car. Which car is better in terms of 1) maintenance, 2) value for money, 3) handling, 4) fuel comsumption 5) performance - the Alfa 147 or Golf GTi? Thanks in advance!
  23. http://www.sgcarmart.com/news/review.php?AID=44&PN=1 TTS' latest project is a re-chipped Bravo T-Jet to 185hp and 272Nm - it's quite nice, but I hope they do something to the hopelessly light steering and pedals :S Gave the Golf GT quite a scare...hehe Ignore the car info listed in the article below. It is not quite ready/correct yet. The car costs $2000 more than the standard T-Jet and comes with bigger rims/original body kit. Any feedback appreciated!
  24. Saw the Golf GTI Limited Edition at Vivo city last weekened. It is going at $109,800. Remembered the selling price of the GTI was usually at 127-128K. So went up to talk to the SE how come they can offer it as such an attractive price. The SE told me this limited edition was basically the same car as the usual GTI except that it will come only in fabric seats(no leather seats), no electric seats, no xenon lights and absence of some other minor features. The OMV is 27.3K. Usual OMV of the GTI is around 31K. The difference in the OMV translates to cost difference of about 9K or so for the dealer but they reduce the price by abt 17K. One more thing, there will be only 50 units of this for sale and they all come in red only. The SE also said that the price would be reduced by another 1K if one is getting a min 50K loan or more. I thought it is quite worthy of consideration for those who wants the GTI experience but dun mind having no leather seats and other minor features which does not affect the car performance. Anyone getting it??
  25. Hi Guys, Want to get your feedback on the above two cars(overall, including engine performance); the remap Bravo 185hp v/s the Golf GTI 200hp. I drove both at different times, and the GTI seems more torquy while the Bravo seems more responsive(maybe because I was controlling the gear on the manual). The Bravo also looks classier, but the GTi looks more luxurious....
