  1. Johor police chief Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff speaking about the Johor crime situation to Singaporean and Malaysian media in Johor Bahru on Thursday. The police chief of Johor has declared his state to be "safe beyond doubt". Referring to negative perceptions of the crime situation in Johor and recent crime statistics, Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said that the state's police are in "full control". Datuk Mohd Mokhtar noted that the number of violent and property crime cases in Johor fell about 36 per cent between 2008 and last year. Overall, there were 17,105 crime cases in the state last year, or about 10 per cent less than in 2012. The police chief also assured Singaporeans that they are not specifically targeted by criminals: "Crimes are committed when an opportunity arises regardless of (a victim's) race, religion, sex and nationality." 8. ST Forum Jul 29, 2011 Loan quantum puts flat beyond reach MY WIFE and I heeded the Government's call to have more babies and have more than reproduced ourselves with three wonderful children. With a growing family, an elderly parent and a maid, my family of seven was badly in need of a bigger living space. We decided to make use of our second and final chance to apply for new build-to-order (BTO) subsidised public housing. After close to a year of unsuccessful applications, we were overjoyed to be finally invited to select a BTO flat. But our joy proved to be short-lived. The subsidised public housing we selected costs close to half a million dollars. Our combined income of more than $7,000 is at the high end of the Housing Board's income ceiling. Yet when we applied for an HDB loan, we were surprised that the board required a downpayment of 60 per cent - more than a quarter of a million dollars - on the purchase price. The HDB offered a maximum loan of only $188,000 on a half-million-dollar public flat. I truly wonder if public housing is affordable any more if citizens, like my family who have heeded the Government's call to have more children, have to find more than a quarter of a million dollars to make the downpayment on a subsidised public flat. 10. Terrible accident. I wonder how fast the car is driving, to be crashed like that - taking into consideration that it is a hard-bodied Volvo, and not some soft-metal makes. =================== 24-yr-old driver stuck in wreck for 30 minutes By Bryna Sim HE HAD just finished work yesterday at 7pm and was preparing for bed. But the sharp, screeching sound of tyres, followed by a loud bang, dashed his plans. Safety coordinator Francis Amutha, 33, an Indian national, dashed out of his office at the upcoming Lucida condominium construction site immediately to see what had happened. The first thing he felt was fear. 'I was so scared that someone had died,' he said. As he ran out of the compound with about 30 fellow Indian and Chinese nationals, they saw smoke billowing from a twisted heap of metal. According to the police, a car had skidded and hit a tree. It occurred at the junction of Thomson Road and Suffolk Road, near the Kampung Java flyover. Because the driver's side was badly damaged, Mr Amutha and some others approached the passenger's side instead. 'We forced open the passenger side car door, and I saw a man trapped inside,' said Mr Amutha. He called out to the driver and was relieved to find out that he was still alive. SCDF personnel confirmed that the driver of the black Volvo car was a 24-year old male Chinese. Mr Amutha asked the man: 'Hello sir, are you okay? 'When he answered me, I was relieved.' He then asked the man if he could try to get out of the wreckage himself, but the man replied that his legs were stuck. Together with some other Chinese nationals armed with crowbars, Mr Amutha decided to try to prise open the door on the driver's side. But they were stopped by Dr Chia Kok Hoong, 48, a surgeon, who lives at the condominium Ten @ Suffolk, located just next to the Lucida condominium construction site. He was at home when he heard the bang and decided to see what had happened. 'Don't move him' Said Dr Chia: 'I told the workers not to move the driver because they did not have the right equipment and might end up injuring him further.' He was also concerned that the driver might have broken bones. 'If that were so, pressure from the wreckage might actually prevent more blood from escaping, whereas releasing this pressure might lead to the driver bleeding further,' he said. Mr Amutha took his advice, and told his fellow workers to bring fire extinguishers and strong searchlights from their construction site instead. 'I didn't want to stand around doing nothing. Since smoke was coming out from the car, I thought that the extinguishers would be useful in case a fire broke out,' he said. Dr Chia also spoke with the driver, who was still conscious. 'He gave me his name and home number, and asked me to contact his family,' said Dr Chia. SCDF personnel who arrived at the scene extricated the driver with a hydraulic spreader and cutter in 25 minutes. 'The driver is suspected to have sustained a right thigh fracture, left shoulder dislocation, as well as abrasions and cuts,' said an SCDF spokesman. The police spokesman added that the driver was taken conscious to Tan Tok Seng hospital. He was trapped in his seat for about 30 minutes. According to Dr Chia, the driver's parents and another woman arrived at the scene just in time to see him being wheeled into the waiting ambulance. 'They thanked me and were glad to know that a doctor was with their son,' he said. For Mr Amutha and his fellow workers, it was a night to remember. He said: 'I have been here since 1997 and this is the first time I've seen such a terrible accident.' Even so, he was glad to have been of help. He said the searchlights were useful. 'We directed the searchlights at the wreckage and assisted the SCDF personnel,' he said. He's also glad to have put his training as safety coordinator into practice. 'I'm glad that the man is alive,' he added.

  12. Source: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/afp/20080703/tts-...ce-c1b2fc3.html AFP - 2 hours 21 minutes ago LONDON (AFP) - - The price of oil set a record high above 146 dollars a barrel here on Thursday owing to falling reserves of US crude, simmering tensions over Iran and a weak dollar, traders said. In reaction, Saudi Arabian Oil Minister Ali al-Nuaimi said his country, the world's leading exporter of crude, was "concerned" about soaring prices. Brent North Sea oil for August delivery surged to a life-time peak of 146.69 dollars a barrel in morning trade after breaching 146 dollars for the first time earlier on Thursday. New York's main oil contract, light sweet crude for August delivery, leapt to an all-time pinnacle of 145.85 dollars on Thursday. "There is actually a chance we could see 150 dollars today (Thursday)," said the latest Schork Report on energy markets. Brent oil later stood at 146.34 dollars, up 2.08 dollars from Wednesday's close. New York crude was up 1.98 at 145.55 dollars. Oil prices, which have doubled in value over the past year, were partly driven by news that American crude stockpiles fell by 2.0 million barrels to stand at 299.8 million barrels in the week to June 27. The US government's Energy Information Administration had also revealed Wednesday that crude inventories were 15.3 percent lower than at the same stage one year ago. "It was the first time inventory fell below the psychologically critical 300-million-barrel threshold since January," said PetroMatrix analyst Olivier Jakob. The latest record-breaking price surge also came after Iranian Oil Minister Gholam Hossein Nozari said that Iran would react fiercely to any military attack against the oil exporter. The OPEC oil exporting group said on Thursday that it would be difficult to replace the crude output of Iran should the country face attack. "If something happened in Iran, it is difficult to replace (Iran's output of) 4.1 or 4.2 million barrels a day," OPEC secretary general Abdallah el-Badri told the daily newsletter of the World Petroleum Congress in Madrid. There has been a surge in speculation recently that Israel might be planning a military strike against Iran's nuclear sites. Iran has been locked in a five-year standoff with the West over its nuclear programme. Iran claims it is for generating electricity while Western powers fear the development of nuclear weapons. On Thursday, the oil market also found key support from the struggling US currency, which makes dollar-priced commodities cheaper for foreign buyers and tends to encourage demand, analysts said. Dealers said the US currency could slide further against the euro because the European Central Bank, led by president Jean-Claude Trichet, was widely expected to increase eurozone interest rates on Thursday. "The weaker dollar theme is likely to persist and influence most markets today (Thursday)," said Sucden analyst Andrey Kryuchenkov. "In the longer run, crude prices are still well supported by geopolitical concerns, persistent supply disruptions and fears over tight supplies."
  13. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_216836.html Many families live beyond their means, have wrong priorities Community welfare organisations can help promote sound values: PM By Zakir Hussain SINGAPOREANS who spend beyond their means and have to go to their MPs for help were placed under the spotlight by none other than Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Friday. He noted that as MPs, 'we often see families who have over-committed themselves financially' - for instance those who have been 'extravagant in doing up their homes using renovation loans', or 'bought expensive furniture or large screen TV sets on hire purchase'. 'The ones with the most serious problems have bought homes which are larger than they can afford, and taken mortgages which they are then unable to pay,' he said. Mr Lee was speaking at the 60th anniversary dinner of the Malay Youth Literary Association (popularly known by its Malay acronym 4PM), a community welfare organisation that helps young Malays. While families who live beyond their means come from all races, 'quite a few are Malay families', he noted. 'It is a sensitive matter to raise, but all MPs and social workers know that it is a real issue that needs to be tackled,' he added. Contacted by The Straits Times, Tampines GRC MP Masagos Zulkifli said he sees at least one such case a week - for example, a family living in a flat it cannot afford, or one that needs help preventing its TVs or stereo sets from being repossessed. Some come with the latest mobile phones, a clear sign they have wrong priorities, he said.
