  1. Hi guys, Anyone went on Leisure World before? The 'gambling' cruise? Got a question I would like to ask... is it easy for old folks to board Leisure World from the small ferry? Need to cross bridge or walk up the gangway by the side of the cruise? Scary or not ah?
  2. Do our part and reduce air pollution for our next generation, especially young kids! Do not take what we have now for granted, as it may soon happen to Singapore or to our neighbouring countries, and we will too, be seriously affected by air pollution. If anybody here got links or know the operations manager etc for schoolbuses, or fleets, please let us know. We will provide these companies free trials to bring down their fuel consumption and emissions, and prolong their engine life. More here: Everyone waited for it to be taken down. 150 million views later, it's still up. Watch it here. Update: Complete video with fully translated english subtitles! The full video is around 2 hours and still not yet fully translated. This is a short 10 minute video with english subtitles.

  4. The Straits Times was granted exclusive access to document an awake surgery, where doctors removed a brain tumour from patient Oh Zhi Long while he was still conscious. Mr Oh Zhi Long, 32, discovered by accident that he had a brain tumour. Less than a week later, he lay awake in the operating theatre as surgeons removed a cancerous growth from his brain. Mr Oh and the National Neuroscience Institute gave The Straits Times exclusive access to the operation. Science editor Chang Ai-Lien, deputy picture editor Wang Hui Fen and multimedia journalist Basil Edward Teo documented this remarkable surgery and tracked his year-long journey to recovery. https://www.facebook.com/STVideoPage/videos/559162254468581/ If you have about 8 minutes to share, I think this is worth watching. Never knew awake surgery was possible. Kudos to these doctors!

The Syrian crisis has raised the threat of terrorism in Singapore. Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean gave a sobering picture in Parliament today (July 9) on the impact of the crisis to the country and why the developments go beyond security concerns and threatens social cohesion. The Syrian conflict is into its third year and is a security concern for many countries including Singapore. As many as 12,000 foreigners may have already gone to fight in Syria, and the number is growing. Mr Teo, who is also Home Affairs Minister, revealed that a handful of Singaporeans have also gone to Syria to take part in the conflict. “The Government knows of a handful of Singaporeans who have gone to Syria to take part in the conflict. One of them is Haja Fakkurudeen Usman Ali (Haja), a naturalised Singapore citizen of Indian origin. He brought his wife and three children then aged between two and 11 with him,” he said. “Another female Singaporean is believed to have gone to Syria with her foreign husband and two teenaged children. The whole family is taking part in the conflict in various ways, either joining the terrorist groups to fight, or providing aid and support to the fighters.” Source: http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/handful-singaporeans-went-syria-join-conflict-dpm-teo

  10. Not sure if there's already a thread on this... I cant help but admire the cheerfulness of the Thai teen girl who lost her legs after she fell from a MRT station platform.... Putting the search for accountability for the mishap asides.... she seems to remain cheerful despite the tradegy she suffered..... in the hospital bed, at the airport, she looks more cheerful than most of us who do not have to go thru and face the prospect of living the rest of our life without our legs.... there's something to remember and learn...... anyone has her pics to post here???
  11. mean keeping hair long will not become a slut? I understand some schools discourage female teacher to go for this event, it could be for valid reason. but for girl who brave themselves for good cause, what was the principal thinking, trying to train their student to be Miss Singapore and rich tai tai?
  12. I was reading http://remembersingapore.wordpress.com/201...re-mrt-history/ and have been thinking... lots of policies in the early days were very good, but many have deteriorated or gone haywire now what has gone wrong? HDB: - took over the responsibilities of the previous bo-zho-gang Singapore Improvement Trust - established to resettle the farmers, villagers and low-income residents - to build affordable public housing for Singaporeans What has gone wrong? - supply-demand becomes a factor in the building of flats, instead of meeting the basic needs of residents - private developers taking part (DBSS), resulting in ridiculous sky high prices (the Tampines $888,000 flat was the big joke) - free market strategy leads to speculations and viewing HDB flats' as an investment tool MRT: - developed to improve the overall efficiency of public transport - to link up the new towns to the city, making travelling time shorter - to ease traffic congestions What has gone wrong? - top priority given to revenues, profits and shareholders' interests, neglecting the basic needs of commuters - lack of maintenance leads to frequent breakdowns - population explosion leads to more MRT lines needed, which in turn need higher ridership (more people) to support its operation and revenues Hawker Centres: - established to resettle street hawkers, improving hygienic conditions and illegal hawking - to provide affordable food for the masses What has gone wrong? - the construction of hawker centres were totally stopped for 2 decades, and new towns such as Sengkang and Punggol have no hawker centres. Private syndicates are allowed to build their major food centres (such as the one at Sengkang central), causing inflation in the prices of food (at least they are rectifying this problem) COE: - to control vehicle population What has gone wrong? - car dealers and taxi companies allowed to hog quotas and bid in open markets - fluctuations so large that the same car can cost double in two years ERP: - to ease traffic congestion at major motorways during peak hours - to replace the Area Licensing Scheme in city areas What has gone wrong? - ERP also implemented in non-major motorways and during non-peak hours - becomes a revenue-generating sort of tax applied to the drivers
  13. http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...eringat-island- Saw this article and went down to explore last Sunday with wife and kid. I must say its really worth it! Nice sand, clean and clear water..you can practically catch fish using your hands as they swim near the shore lines. not much crowd too as this island still quite relatively unknown.
  14. This mrn abt 12nn I was shocked when I saw a SMRT bus inside the MOTOSIKAL LANE which was at the extreme lane at JB Checkpoint. WTF was the driver trying to do? I guess it must be another Ah Tiong or Indian driver who is not familar and doesn't understand Malay or English Signboard. The bus windscreen was smashed. The driver damn kok cos the ganttry will not allow bus to pass through. KNN, SMRT never trained their bus driver. The JB Immigration Dept sure claimed damages from SMRT. Just now when I returned to SG about 2.30pm. I saw the bus still there. They managed to reverse the bus out. SMRT better WAKE UP. After all the MRT saga, now their buses.

  17. No compaigns, door-to-door visits, rallies, battle cries nor slogans And certainly no drama at all. Just some fanciful brochures sent prior telling you what will or will not happen after you voted and a 歌台 at a void deck blasting loud music with a skimpily-dressed singer belting out Hokkien songs just outside the polling station. Yes a fully functioning 歌台 though small but with all the works [shocked] Wow. Oh did I mention a free umbrella given as an incentive for those take the trouble to come & vote? Eye-opener for a sua ku like me in a LUP polling. And it will cost me a cool $S1,245 from my CPF either in full or via installments in 5 or 10 years, interest of 7.5% to pay for the new lifts if more than 75% of the folks are in favour of the upgrading. Definitely not be as exciting as another more anticipated polling event come 26 May 2012 somewhere nearby [laugh] How about your LUP polling?
  18. "Attention all passengers. Is there a pilot or anyone capable of flying a A320 in which we are in right now? Kindly step forward to be identified please. And concerning the ruckus you witnessed earlier, do not be alarmed as it is just one of our crew members having a rough day that's all. Thank you for your attention and please continue to enjoy the rest of the flight." Imagine hearing this especially if you are first time taking a plane... ...& that you are on board this JetBlue plane. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1191895/1/.html US pilot charged after mid-flight meltdown Posted: 29 March 2012 0524 LAS VEGAS, Nevada: A US pilot has been charged with interfering with a flight crew after a dramatic mid-flight breakdown in which he screamed about terrorists and 9/11, officials said on Wednesday. Clayton Osbon, 49, had to be restrained by a number of male passengers after Tuesday's incident, in which a JetBlue plane from New York to Las Vegas made an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas. "Several passengers assisted and brought Osbon down in the forward galley, where he continued to yell comments about Jesus, Sept. 11, Iraq, Iran and terrorists," said an affidavit giving a blow-by-blow account of the flight. The first officer then "declared an emergency and diverted the aircraft to Amarillo, landing with passengers still restraining Osbon," said the document cited by US Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Sarah R. Saldana. Footage filmed with cell phone cameras and broadcast on US television showed chaos at the front of the plane, as male passengers scrambled to help restrain the pilot, who could be heard shouting hysterically. Between four and six passengers had to sit on him for up to 20 minutes as the plane, which was three and a half hours into its flight, made an emergency landing, witnesses said. According to the affidavit, the pilot, who had shown no previous sign of mental problems, had arrived late for the flight, and began behaving erratically soon after the plane took off from New York's Kennedy airport. "As the plane was leaving JFK and climbing in altitude in its scheduled five-hour flight, Osbon said something to the first officer (FO) about being evaluated by someone, but the FO did not know what he meant. "Osbon then talked about his church and the need to 'focus' and asked the FO to take the controls and work the radios. Osbon began talking about religion, but, according to the FO, his statements were not coherent." The first officer became particularly concerned when Osbon said "things just don't matter," and "yelled over the radio to air traffic control and instructed them to be quiet," according to the affidavit. Osbon then "turned off the radios in the aircraft, dimmed his monitors and sternly admonished the FO for trying to talk on the radio. "When Osbon said 'We need to take a leap of faith,' the FO stated that he became very worried. Osbon told the FO that 'We're not going to Vegas,' and began giving what the FO described as a sermon." The first officer then suggested they invite an off-duty JetBlue captain who was on board into the cockpit, at which point the captain abruptly left to go to the forward lavatory. When Osbon came out of the lavatory, he began talking to flight attendants, mentioning "150 souls on board." "Osbon walked to the rear of the aircraft but along the way stopped and asked a male passenger if he had a problem. Osbon then sprinted back to the forward galley and tried to enter his code to re-enter the cockpit," it said. At that point, the first officer used the public address system to issue an order to restrain Osbon. In response, a number of passengers - many of whom were well-built men heading to a security industry convention in Las Vegas - piled onto the captain, and sat on him for the rest of the flight. Once on the tarmac, TV footage showed the pilot being taken off the plane on a stretcher in Amarillo, where passengers spent several hours before continuing their interrupted flight to the desert gambling city. JetBlue's chief executive Dave Barger paid tribute to the quick-thinking first officer, as well as the passengers who helped pin the captain down. "That was a tough situation at altitude. The customers, the crew, just did a great job," he told NBC television's "Today Show" programme. "That was a true team effort at 35,000 feet (10,000 kilometres) yesterday." "I've known the captain personally for a long period of time. There's been no indication of this at all in the past," Barger said. - AFP/de

  20. My ex-senior in JC, , Mr Smark, has been making lots of money after he left school with his scheme: He promises superb returns to his customers and many of them supported him and trusted him for decades despite his high fee for the services/returns he appeared to be delivering.... he uses charts and stats to prove better years to come. He even managed to hire top talents to help run his scheme. These loyalists were paid salaries which top earners in other countries darent even dream of. Having an united family helps too, his relatives help grow his business. Soon his beloved wife was listed as one of the top 'most influencial' aunties in the mahjong kakis community. Things went rather smoothly and everyone who take part in the scheme was making money one way or another until recently the returns started to dwindle and the exclusive club house (equiped with mahjong rooms, spas, ktv) for members of the scheme started to cause small inconvenences to the members eg lift breakdown, overcrowded washrooms etc etc. The spa pools' water also overflew and flooded the mahjong rooms next door! Members started to show concerns and to make peace and buy time, Mr Smark declared a discount on his fees...... His loygalists were split: some say this is a good move, some say Mr Smark is forcing them to go hungry by doing this.... they hinted resignation. What must Mr Smark do now to survive? More importantly, what options do the members have?

  23. Went to check out the fair this afternoon. The roads leading up to the S'pore Expo carparks were jammed packed! Should have planned ahead and go in through XiLin Ave and Changi South Ave 1 instead of the main road. In the end, decided to park at the carpark at Halls 7 - 10 and it was a wise choice. Managed to book a tour package to Japan around December. The Expo Hall 5 was packed like sardines too. What a day! Any bro been/going there? Please heed my advice and save yourselve the hassle and headache. Good Luck!
