  5. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/A...ory_741406.html TOKYO (AP) - An freeway pile-up of luxury sportscars in Japan may be one of the priciest road accidents on record, smashing eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini and two Mercedes. Police say they believe the pileup Sunday was touched off when the driver of one of the Ferraris tried to change lanes and hit the median barrier. He spun across the freeway, and the other cars collided while trying to avoid hitting his car. Video of the crash aired by NTV, a major national network, showed several smashed, bright red Ferraris cluttering the freeway. No one was seriously injured, but police in Yamaguchi prefecture said 10 people were treated for bruises and cuts. Police say 14 cars were involved altogether.

  7. Lewis Hamilton's father plans to run a fleet of modern formula one cars for young drivers, according to British reports. Reports in the Telegraph and Independent newspapers said Anthony Hamilton will organise a series of track days mainly in the UK giving rookie drivers time at the wheel of 2009-specification F1 cars. The Independent said the move will "bypass (F1's) testing restrictions", and referred to the teenage Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari who last year made his F1 debut without having driven an F1 car on a proper circuit. It emerged last week that Hamilton will this year manage Nyck de Vries, after the 14-year-old Dutch karter was signed to McLaren's driver development programme.

  9. This interesting article is post by Dr AEHaas from BITOG. Somehow I missed this paper presented at the Powertrain and Fluid Conference of Oct. 2005: Evaluation of SAE 0W20 and 5W20 GF-4 Prototype Formulations in Severe Taxi Fleet Service, Amanda Damen, Petro-Canada, Nigel Broom and Rolfe Hartley, Infineum USA LP, and Michael Riley, Ford Motor Co. My review: The Las Vegas taxi service is considered the most severe for testing high temperature fluids. Four taxis were run with 0W20 and 4 with 5W-20 test oils for 100,000 miles each with a test oil having only 0.05% phosphorus. This is to test the newer GF-5 pending specification. All engines were then broken down and tested for wear. Oil testing was done at 5k and at 10k miles. Each oil was specified to run only 3k miles by Ford under these
  10. ST 10/10/06 ====================== TAXI commuters will soon be flagging down the Toyota Camry - arguably Singapore's most popular Japanese executive saloon. Taxi companies here are stepping up their search for alternative vehicles so they do not run afoul of the stricter Euro IV emission standard for diesel vehicles, which kicked in last week. The Toyota Crown and Nissan Cedric, which now make up 90 per cent of cabs here, fail to meet requirements. Smart Automobiles has decided on the Camry and has put the first one on the road. It plans to roll out at least 19 more. Their petrol engines will converted to run on compressed natural gas (CNG). It costs about $40,000, one of the least costly cabs here. Smart general manager William Chua said the first vehicle was registered under the Economic Development Board's scheme for innovative transport technologies, which means it gets a waiver of the Additional Registration Fee and Certificate of Entitlement. The other 19 may get a similar waiver. The other taxi firms are also looking to use new and untested models to replace the ubiquitous Toyota Crown and Nissan Cedric. The Straits Times understands that Japanese alternatives to these two workhorses will not be available until the second half of next year. Meanwhile, Jardine Cycle & Carriage has brought in two units of the turbodiesel Kia Magentis for taxi operators. Its chief executive (motor operations) Cheah Kim Teck noted that there seemed to be 'quite a bit of interest in the car', and that operators wanted to test it alongside the other Korean contender, the Hyundai Sonata. Taxi giant ComfortDelGro has been testing a pair of Sonatas since late last year, as well as a couple of Volkswagen Touran MPVs, but it has not made up its mind.
