  1. Singaporeans going to Bangkok, take note. According to one Singaporean who travelled to the wildly-popular Thai city recently in May 2018, a new kind of scam is allegedly going on at the airport there. This is copied from the Facebook User’s post: I don’t usually write such long posts on Facebook but the terrible experience at Suvarnabhumi Airport during my recent trip over the weekend has prompted me to do so. What I want to achieve is to raise awareness and to prevent more people from being caught in the same situation. I was travelling with 13 other Singaporeans and we landed in Bangkok around 9.40am on 18th May. Everything seemed fine, as per my previous trips to Bangkok – we went through customs, collected our luggage from the baggage claim area, and then proceeded to walk through ‘nothing to declare’. When we were about to exit the airport to head over to our AOT transport (to be clear, we were already out of transit area, about to exit the airport, so that’s where the public is free to walk around), we got stopped by Thai officers, and they asked me “how many of you?” and I replied “14”. I saw the change in expression followed by “oh, can you follow me to office?” With nothing to hide, we followed them to the Excise Department office. They told us they were going to search our luggage. Again, with nothing to hide, we agreed. Some of us came out relatively quickly but we soon realised 2-3 of us were asked to stay in the office with their passports confiscated. Background info: 14 of us walked out together in a group, carrying 6 bottles of Balvenie 16 which we got from Changi Airport Duty Free. Each bottle was packed individually in sealed bags to be carried on board the plane, and each bottle came with an individual receipt. However, 3 of such sealed bags were placed in 1 plastic bag, which meant 2 of us were carrying the 2 plastic bags (containing 3 sealed bags each). So, we are all aware that the alcohol allowance for hard liquor to be brought into Bangkok is 1L per pax. Were we well within our alcohol limit/allowance? You would think so, but NO. They told us we could be charged with tax evasion because only 2 people were carrying the alcohol (even though all of us said we were travelling as a group of 14), and that we LITERALLY were allowed to only CARRY 1 per person. They wanted to fine us up to THB 75,000 (~SGD3,160) BUT we were told they will lower the fine to THB49,000 (~SGD2,065) IF we paid IMMEDIATELY. Note: CASH ONLY, no cards allowed – they told us to get cash from our credit cards OR change our SGD and told us where the ATMs and money changers were. They even threatened to take all of us to the police station if we do not agree to pay the fine. Allow me to emphasize one more time – 14 of us bought 6 bottles of hard liquor. We managed to get them to lower the fine to THB 33,000 (~SGD1,390), not that I’m complaining we got a lower fine but isn’t it weird they could adjust the fine amount? We eventually paid the fine because we were in a foreign country afterall and it was extremely difficult to reason with them when they were threatening ‘jail’ in no time. They were definitely rushing us to pay up. Despite paying the fine, they only returned 2 bottles (out of 6) to us. We also realise that one of the officers was ‘stationed’ at the baggage claim area while we were there and was probably eyeing us the entire time but waited till we have gone through customs before stopping us. To highlight, the officer eyeing us at the baggage claim area eventually ended up at the airport exit, SUSPICIOUS MUCH??? That officer’s area of duty comprise of both INSIDE and OUTSIDE, and they could switch their duties as and when? While we were stuck there (the longest 90mins ever…), we saw a number of people being escorted to the Excise Department office too, comprising of a group of 10 (bringing in 8 bottles which is still within the allowance!!!), a couple (well, apparently it is not okay for the guy to carry the bottle on behalf of his girlfriend/wife), and another smaller group before us. Think about the amount of THB collected over that 90mins. By the way, there was a man from the Taiwan embassy who came up to me 20mins into this incident, asking me if I was Taiwanese. Apparently he snapped a few photos of us standing OUTSIDE the Excise Department office and perhaps he was going to help us if we were Taiwanese. However, he got called out by the Thai officers and they demanded him to delete the photos he took in a PUBLIC SPACE. They even took down his details and demanded to take a photo of his pass. After the episode, we found out from some of our (Thai/Singaporean) friends that they do this to both locals and tourists, that the officers in the airport will go out of the way to find reasons (even the 200 cig allowance) to justify the fines they impose on you. In my opinion, it was absolutely unfair. To my surprise, nothing came up when I tried searching on google for people with similar experiences, which means many people out there could still be unaware since we can’t be the first.
  2. I was in the sitting area witn shade first. Later an ang mo lady asked permission to join. The other filipino group who was there agreed. 2 hrs later, the filipino left. 20 mins ago, an angmo guy asked me to sit elsewhere so his group can occupy tbe whole area. I told him i need the shade n he replied that there were plenty of seats with shades available. There were so many slippers n bags there - my family's stuff n he expect me to carry myself? I fed up tokk his photo n walked away. My stuff are still there. Now i know why you all dislike foreigners so much!

  10. Would like to share an interesting discussion started in another forum (hope this is ok), very timely and important as well as sensitive topic. Any comments? http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=2474638 The only Singaporean in team asked to GO! Doing a favor for a friend as he does not have an account here, who would like to seek suggestions from all helpful bros and sis here, and perhaps from the government. Basically, he is Singaporean, connected with an MNC for more than 10yrs now, has excellent record of performance and attitude, and is now told by his new boss to look for another job. If we think of the ongoing economic and business situation, I thought there is no issue on this, until my friend shared more details. It turns out that my friend is the only local Singaporean in their department, and the rest are expats (you probably can guess the discrepancy of the salary and benefits of a local vs an expat). The boss is also an expat, and has maintained that headcount reduction is driven by slowing business and to save costs, and has nothing to do with performance or behaviour. I also understand that expats are ONLY justified when there are no local talents available, but this is clear contradiction to take out local talent while retaining the more expensive foreign talent. It's easy to side with my friend as he is my good friend, but what about you dear bros and sis. I believe that SG government will not tolerate such approach without due reason, especially that many people look up to SG government for it's ability to maintain harmony among various race and religion. Would appreciate your helpful comments. The questions that need your opinions/suggestions are: 1. Is the MNC allowed to implement such kind of approach without violating SG labor laws? 2. What/where is the best venue for my friend to raise this issue in a formal manner? 3. Other comments and suggestions that may help. Pls reply with your thoughts on this, or PM is also ok.
  11. ...for comforter. My gf and I wanted to give a set of bedsheet stuff (pillows, bedsheet, comforter, etc) to my gf's sister. Her sister and her bf ride a bike so they are unable to carry them home, instead we will deliver them to their home in my car. Anyway they decided to go JB pump petrol and makan supper, so we decided to go there with them, before coming back to SG to pass them the bedsheet stuff. At the JB custom, 2 officers ya ya, keep asking me what the stuff in the cars are. We told them its a set of bedsheet, comforter, and pillows to give away. One of them ask if they are expensive... I told them we got it for free and we are going to give it away. We even open the plastic bags to show them. He then said we have to pay TAX... he even ask the other guy if pillows need to be taxed. We told them we have no idea these things need to be taxed, and said we are going to bring them back to SG anyway, they can check again when we are back. They said, we will be coming back on another side, and they won't be there... we sort of have some ideas what they really want. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ What's ridiculous is that, they said we need to be taxed $60 but they discount me, ask me pay $50. I wanted to give them $20 since I don't want trouble, but my gf told the officers "we got no money, we dunno need to pay tax, so we just go back SG now lor, but how to u-turn back?" The officers then say... "er nvm, give u warning first, next time need to pay ya"... Then we just drove off. What a joke. Lok-kok car also they want to aim... times are really bad, I guess.

  13. hi all, I m sure, many others recv the same cheques that i hv gotten from a huge local bank. it came in as a form of "pre-approved" fund transfer cheques, to my name and ready for banking in to use. So whats the problem ?? Six mths ago i recv the same cheques via post, seeing that I dun need this , so i just tore it and dump away. Suddenly, a NEW fund trx acct line , with my name + acct number, pops up in my cc statement. Wait a min, i didnt have that acct !! After calling the cust svc, it was claimed that this acct existed due to those cheques, and is in an inactive state as i didnt bank in. Boy, I was pretty mad, its like sending me a pre-approved cc without my application / knowledge. He quickly offered to remove that acct no. from my future statement (ie it wun appear anyore !!) I told him off and gave him 7 days to remove it from my acct ( not just erasing it from the bill !!). Now case closed ! Ytd, I recv. the same 3 cheques again ! Immed. i called the cust svc again, and they claimed that there is NO way for me to stop them from opening new fund tfx acct for me ! Here, are what they are doing iaw MAS guidelines (opening pre-approved fund transfer accts w/o owners knowledge/agreement) ? Any bros in the $$ ind can help / advice ? ty ty mice

  16. I stay at Blk 107 Simei St 1. Just now when I looked from my window, I saw a boy sitting on my car with his right foot up. I shouted at him from the 11th floor to get up. Made my way down, while waiting for the lift he moved to the other side but was still sitting on my car. Went down and we were walking to his parents home, he wanted instead to go to the police because he did not want to trouble his parents. (I suspect he was afraid of his parents). So, we walked (for some reason he did not want to wear his slippers) all the way to the Simei CC and made the report. His argument was that he fell down while playing badminton on the road and by instinct he needed to sit on my car . So I told him that when I was parking my car earlier, his pants were already folded up on the left leg, so when did he hurt his leg and besides, if he was in so much pain, how come he does not sit on the side of the road but on my car ?? Anyway, he was chatting with his friend, so couldn't be much pain ... Anyway, I did not pursue the matter, folly of a little kid (altho I worry about him growing up in that direction). I have already raised the issue officially to the ECTC some time back. I was referred to HDB and finally ECTC told me that the provider in charge of the car park has been informed. But nothing much has happened since ... I guess people in Simei are not concerned about another accident with a kid. These kids do not give way to vehicles ... even when it is clear, we need to pass. I know there was trouble when I had to horn him (very softly) to park my car. Maybe I shd have pursued the matter but I feel silly, a 30++ year old man pursuing some trivial matter against a kid . But on the other hand, do we let such blantant behaviour continue ? Anyway, left our details with the police and hopefully, the silly boy does not try anything stupid because if he does, I will pursue the matter. Did I do anything wrong ? He was leading me to Blk 106 (or maybe he was smart ...) but his younger brother did come out from the lobby of Blk 109. Drivers be warned ...
