  8. IT security company Vantage Point highlights three wireless routers, including the Zhone GPON router used by ISP ViewQwest, that have "critical vulnerabilities" allowing hackers to become a network administrator with "relatively low effort". The vulnerability was also flagged by SingCERT. SINGAPORE: "Critical vulnerabilities" were found to exist in three brands of wireless routers sold in the country, according to security company Vantage Point and confirmed by Singapore Computer Emergency Response Team (SingCERT). At least one Internet Service Provider (ISP) has acknowledged the issue and is working to fix the vulnerability. In a blogpost on Tuesday (Feb 24), Vantage Point's Senior Security Consultant Lyon Yang highlighted "critical vulnerabilities" in three brands of routers - Zhone, Aztech and Asus. These vulnerabilities "allow an attacker to become at least a network administrator, and in most cases also gain a remote root shell, with relatively low effort", he said. It added that there were several "proof-of-concept exploits" developed based on the vulnerabilities. In other words, the researcher created possible exploits, but there are no known attacks by hackers on affected customers so far. "There are many routers with many different kinds of firmware on the market. The problem is that when the firmware is developed in-house by the vendor, security is often an afterthought," Mr Yang told Channel NewsAsia via email. "Based on our research, up to 32,000 subscribers in Singapore may be affected by the vulnerabilities discovered so far," he added. An advisory was posted on the SingCERT's website on Wednesday evening, confirming the vulnerability. "It is reported that a few routers that may have been provided by Singapore ISPs are found to contain vulnerabilities or insecure configuration," it stated. WORKING TO OBTAIN FIX: VIEWQWEST Vantage Point also highlighted that "thousands of ViewQwest users to be particularly vulnerable". Mr Yang wrote that they use the Zhone GPON router with a "statically assigned Internet Protocol (IP) address with all default services exposed on the Internet". Based on the vulnerability, it is possible to compromise these routers "at will" and hackers may obtain the subscriber's name and residential address. They may also install malware or manipulate the user's network traffic, according to the blogpost. In response to Channel NewsAsia's questions, ViewQwest Chief Operating Officer Chris Williams acknowledged that there is a known security vulnerability with some models of Zhone routers. He added that besides the proof-of-concept testing done by "two concerned customers", none of its other customers have reported issues with the vulnerability. The COO added only "a minority" of its customers "use an affected router in a way which is susceptible to the vulnerability identified". "We have been working with the vendor to obtain a fix to the vulnerability in their affected routers. In the interim, we have been progressively remediating the problem via another method throughout our customer base. This work is still underway and is expected to be completed by the weekend.," Mr Williams said. Telco Singtel is another company that offers the Aztech router highlighted in Vantage Point's report, according to its website. Channel NewsAsia has gotten in touch with the other two manufacturers for comments on the vulnerabilities. Asked how consumers should protect themselves against the highlighted vulnerability, Mr Yang said: "The main issue is that too many default services are exposed over the wide area network (WAN) interface. Users should change the default passwords on the routers and disable WAN access." He added the exact details of the vulnerability will not be released unless the issues have been fixed, to prevent possible attacks from hackers. - CNA/kk

  10. Hi ALL IT Gurus My fibre broadband modem n D-Link router are installed in main hall.. all set up by my ISP last night. Andriod mobile devices n tablet received signal at full bar EVEN IN ALL BEDROOMS. Very Fast connection. However for my studyroom desktop, i only receive ONE BAR of wireless signal. I try to connect, key in e usual security password..it say 'windows does not connect to internet'. Thinking that bedroom signal could be weak thus unable to connect internet. BUT my mobile devices/tablet ARE STILL receiving full bar signal even placed next to my desktop. could it be my wireless lan card in my desktop (2-3yrs old HP Presario Windows 7) are not 100% compatible to fibre network, WLAN card failing suddenly or some configuration has nt done properly? Any good advise by the IT experts?

  16. For the past five years, I have being using wireless to surf internet in my home. All my laptops, ipads, desktop computer are able to wirelessly link up to my router to connect to the internet. One week ago my work horse desktop computer conked out, smoke coming out. This old slim line, with slot in DVD drive, Acer computer was running on vista. It has built in wireless network, similar to laptops, there is no visible external antenne. I made a big mistake today, in buying a new desktop computer that did not come with a built in wireless network. Acer, model ASX1900. As it was on promotion at challenger for just $599. I spent the whole day trying to figure out where the fark is the wireless network and how to turn it on to connect to my wireless router. Only after trying for five hours, doing reseqrch on the internet, then i realised that this computer does not come with wireless network, it comes only with a base-T Lan network. Another fark....this particular model ASX1900 is like very rare and only few website got review. Somemore my core duo is outdated E5700, while the website all reviews newer ASX1900 with newer e6600 processors. Blardy hell....l always thought nowadays computers sure come with wireless network capability. All laptops got wireless built in, so i assume wireless is standard in all computers nowadays!! Why desktop got standard wireless built in? Anyone tell me which model of desktop on the market has the built in wireless capability, at reasonable price? Tomorrow i am going to get a USB wireless network adaptor.....haiz......stupid me...Ass U Me!!
  17. Hi All Bros, Need some advice. I intend to get a WIRELESS-G ROUTER WGR614 for the Starhub's hubstation, and connect the two devices via the ethernet port. Since the hubstation is a router itself, can I install wireless access point instead? http://www.netgear.com/Products/Routersand...ers/WGR614.aspx Basically, I plan to have a wireless setup for the hubstation, with reasonable good coverage but at a low cost. What are my options? BTW, any issue with G-router's signal strength if blocked by a solid wall?
  18. Hi anyone have a good Wireless keyboard for gaming to recommend? My current Keyboard is not really that good to use for gaming for games like Mass Effect 2 type of games.
