  1. Here's the summary: Boy, 6, left in 'floods of tears' on flight after Ryanair 'double-booked' his specially reserved window seat and passenger refused to move Little boy who is a nervous flyer left in tears after he could not sit at window seat Mother paid extra to book window but the seat was given to someone else The passenger refused to give up the seat, and the six-year-old was devastated Ryanair says the seat was not double-booked, but an IT glitch occurred Kids and parents these days. I'm surprised this made it to the news but then not so surprised because the publisher is DailyMail lol. A few takeaways from this story which amused me. Firstly, the adult who refused to shift seats for the crying and "devastated" child. no obligation there of course. Secondly, no one else on the plane volunteered to swap seats so that the family could be seated together and the spoilt brat can get his window seat, even if it was just to save your ears and everyone else from the crying and throwing of tantrums. Lastly, while I understand that it is tough to take care of unruly children, this is a classic lesson for the young child that you don't always get what you want in life and crying certainly doesn't get you there.
  2. I really, really do not enjoy flying. As someone who has to get onto an airplane on a semi-regular basis, I really do not enjoy it (a feeling that has only grown over time). Honestly, there's nothing about the experience that I enjoy. From having to take out your laptop and liquids at security (regulations vary from airport to airport), standing in line at immigration, mishandled/lost baggage, flight delays and cancellations, there's a lot that makes the experience much less seamless than anyone would want. And that's before even getting into the metal tin that everyone is going to be sardine-packed into before hurtling being slingshotted through the air. And beyond the stale air and bland food, I would argue that air journeys are perhaps most distinguished by the collection of micro-frustrations. The toddler crying, the guy next to you encroaching into your armrest space, people who insist on carrying on bag that's obviously oversized, some idiot constantly kicking your backrest, we've all heard (and probably have had) the horror stories. One of the most frustrating and inescapable parts of the journey, though, is boarding. It's slow, laborious, always a little bit disorganised, and somehow even after so many years still never remotely efficient. In fact, there have been various proposals about how to improve boarding. The platonic ideal is what's called the Steffen Boarding Method, which uses mathematics to calculate the most optimal way of boarding a plane. Here's a very useful and illustrative video about various boarding methods: The Steffen Modified looks like it could work, and should be implemented. And yet no carrier has tried. Evidently, humans are too disorganised, unpredictable and bad at following instructions. Even 17 years after the Steffen Method was proposed, we're still terrible at air travel. Interestingly, the seemingly fastest boarding method currently is used by Southwest Airlines - no assigned seating. Literally, sit where you want. But even that is ending, with Southwest moving to an assigned seating system in 2026. We're literally moving backwards. Sigh.
  3. As above. Looking to buy for a birthday present. Is there any speciality shop that sells them?
  4. Not sure where to put this developing tragedy... has been going on since morning... but it's mostly confirmed now. 76 dead, 5 survive. Plane was also carrying the Chapesoense football team to Colombia for the Copa Sudamericana final against Colombian side Atlético Nacional. This was a fairy tale season for them as they'd been promoted to the top flight in 2014 only. Read somewhere else that they were supposed to travel in their own chartered plane but was refused permission by Brazil authorities. So they had to switch to this tragic flight. https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2016/nov/29/brazilian-team-chapecoense-onboard-plane-that-crashed-over-colombia-latest Daily Mail has more pictures http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3980974/Plane-carrying-72-passengers-including-Brazilian-football-team-crashes-Colombia-reports-say.html
  5. An Emirates Airlines Boeing 777-300, registration A6-EMW performing flight EK-521 from Thiruvananthapuram (India) to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) with 275 people on board, was on final approach to Dubai's runway 12L at 12:41L (08:41Z) but attempted to go around from low height. The aircraft however did not climb, but after retracting the gear touched down on the runway and burst into flames. All occupants evacuated safely, no injuries are being reported. The aircraft burned down completely. The airline reported: "Emirates can confirm that an incident happened at Dubai International Airport on 3rd August 2016 at about 12.45pm local time." United Arab Emirates Government confirmed an Emirates aircraft arriving from India suffered a crash landing at Dubai Airport, all passengers have been evacuated, there are no reports of injuries. According to ATC recordings the aircraft performed a normal approach and landing, there was no priority or emergency declared. Upon contacting tower tower reminded the crew of lowering the gear and cleared the aircraft to land. Another approach reported on tower frequency. About 2 minutes after EK-521 reported on tower, the crew reported going around, tower instructed the aircraft to climb to 4000 feet, the crew acknowledged climbing to 4000 feet, a few seconds later tower instructs the next arrival to go around and alerts emergency services. The position of the aircraft is described near the end of the runway. http://avherald.com/h?article=49c12302&opt=0

  9. I am trying to get air tickets for a holiday. Unfortunately, i'm a newbie at this. Coz most of the other flights are not arranged by me. Is it cheaper to go to the tour agency to get the tickets or go to direct website and book (e.g Singapore Airlines website https://www.singaporeair.com)? Bros, please advise...
