    Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86

    Just came across the Subaru BRZ price release by Motor Image. Subaru BRZ at $183,300 http://www.sgcarmart.com/new_cars/newcars_...p?CarCode=11142 But frankly speaking if Toyota GT86 price also around there, which brand will you guys take? Why ?

  4. Not letting the hype over the brilliant BRZ die down, Subaru came up with another variant of the sports coupe to let its fans stay happy. Named the BRZ Premium Sport Edition, it is supposed to be a more luxurious and refined version of the famed coupe. Sadly, not much has been done to increase the driving performance. But then, it is already such a wonderful driver’s car. What they did provide the car were black painted door mirrors and STi aluminium wheels exterior wise. Interestingly, they stuck with 17-inchers, which probably have the best grip/drift balance for the car. Interior wise, the car's seats and steering wheel are wrapped in brown and black leather with tan stitching on some details. The bright red STi push engine start button is a nice welcome too. Overall, this is a nice edition for the BRZ but we are pretty sure local buyers won’t be able to get their hands on it even though it might lure one or two buyers away from a Z4 or SLK.

    Subaru introduces the lightly tuned BRZ tS

    Subaru teased us with a photo of the BRZ with the enticing STi logo on its Japanese website a few days ago. However, it turns out that it is actually a tS edition, which will commence selling soon. The Subaru tS edition will be available for sale in two different versions - the standard BRZ tS and the BRZ tS 'GT-package'. The white car seen here is fitted with the 'GT-package' comes with new 17-inch lightweight black alloy rims, a more pronounced front lip, side skirt and rear bumper. It will also get lower springs, sports muffler, front strut tower bar and some interior trimmings. Bigger Brembo brakes, Bilstein dampers, lightweight driveshaft, Recaro seats and a GT carbon fibre wing are some of the features that buyers can get for this car. The standard tS makes do with the aforementioned bodykit, springs, muffler, strut bar and the minor interior details. A total of 500 units will be produced and it will very likely be a Japan-only model. Tough luck for us locals! We wonder if Subaru will produce a full blown turbocharged STi version of the BRZ. We are definitely crossing our fingers for that one!

    Subaru releases a track ready BRZ

    Subaru recently announced that they will be releasing a track-ready BRZ straight from the assembly line. It is known as the BRZ RA Racing and this version is made exclusively for the Japanese market. Just like any other track or racing versions of the BRZ (or Toyota 86), the BRZ RA Racing is fitted with essential items a person needs when he/she hits the racing tracks. Luxurious comforts such as air-conditioning and stereo players have been left out and replaced with a six-point roll cage (with sidebar), a four point FIA certified racing harness and new floor mats. The BRZ RA Racing was designed with braking performance in mind. The front end receives brake ducts and both front and rear brakes get ventilated discs. The car also receives a Torsen limited slip differential. Removable front and rear tow hooks are placed for easy transportation tasks. In the engine bay, the only additional item is an air-cooled engine cooler and it is clearly seen at the left side of the front snout. Main reasons why the 2.0-litre Boxer engine is left untouched is because that most track enthusiasts would prefer to use their own racing components or parts. As mentioned above, the Subaru BRZ RA Racing is made only for the Japanese market and it is priced at around US$31,500.

Not only that, the Focus ST has to face off against the Subaru BRZ subsequently, a situation which I will explain later on. Hence, the Focus ST is in a situation similar to a participant in WWE's 'King of The Ring' tournament. Can the hottest version of the Focus take the heat? Both the Golf R and Focus ST are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged power plant. The models in the test are equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. Even their horse power ratings are quite close to each other - 256bhp for the German and 252bhp for the American. However, the Golf R has an AWD configuration while the Focus ST sends the power to the front wheels. As the stability control in the US Golf R cannot be turned off, it was replaced with the Subaru BRZ during the race track portion of the evaluation. This part of the test is conducted by Randy Pobst, a professional race car driver. He commented that the BRZ has probably the best balanced handling on the whole market right now.     TRD considering a supercharger for the Scion FR-S

    Just recently, Subaru revealed the Subaru BRZ STI at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. The car is said to be available for sale soon. And soon after that, the company announced that there are plans to release a turbocharged version of the car. While Toyota has released a TRD version of the 86 before this, the car only received aftermarket cosmetic parts such as a bodykit, suspension system and some TRD badges. Many were expecting a turbocharger or supercharger to be included as well. Just days after images of a Subaru BRZ wearing a huge GT wing and a STI bodykit was spotted at the Nurburgring, Toyota's in-house tuning division, TRD, has announced that they are looking into upgrades for the Scion FR-S (Toyota 86 in other markets). During the recent SEMA auto show, Scion showcased three modified examples of the Scion FR-S and a couple of them were supercharged. And it was at the same show where TRD representatives stated that they are considering a supercharger kit for the Scion FR-S. Toyota has previously offered supercharger kits for their sports or performance cars and even some of their trucks. And it comes as no surprise that a supercharger kit will be available for the Scion FR-S. The idea of a supercharger kit for the car is still very much in the planning stage and obviously no power figures were given. One of the advantages of having a TRD supercharger kit is that it offers a full factory warranty by the company and other aftermarket offerings do not often offer that. Since the Scion FR-S (including the Toyota 86) and the Subaru BRZ are practically identical, the supercharger kit should be able to be used for all three cars. Image credit: Net Car Show

    Subaru BRZ XT Line Concept

    Toyota recently showcased a TRD version of the Toyota 86 at the Paris Motor Show. Toyota added a slew of TRD accessories on it which consists of items such as rear diffusers, larger sports wheels, adjustable suspension system and etc. Looks like owners or future buyers of the Toyota 86 will be spoilt for choices. But what about the owners or future buyers of the Subaru BRZ? Are they going to be stuck with the stock look or wait for aftermarket parts from third party manufacturers? Actually, they do not have to wait long because Subaru has come up with a concept for the BRZ. Known as the Subaru BRZ XT Line Concept, the Japanese automaker has given the already good-looking BRZ a more custom look. Rumour has it that the BRZ XT Line Concept could introduce a line of accessories or parts for the BRZ and also it could be the beginning of a forced-induced version of the car. The designation XT may sound familiar to some and that is because Subaru has used it before to name a certain model. The Subaru XT (known as the Subaru Alcyone in its home market) was a two door sports car that was available during the mid 1980s and up to the early 1990s. And the XT tag was also used on the Subaru Forester (second generation onwards) to denote the turbocharged versions. Details of the concept car was not given out but lets use the images as a guide to see what Subaru has added or changed. Firstly, the most obvious additions to the car are the carbon fibre parts (or just a carbon fibre wrap) of the side mirror, roof panel and rear spoiler. The blacked-out look extends to the eleven-spoke sports wheels. Bright red brake callipers (with a Subaru wording on it) are situated on all four corners of the car and they give the car some contrast in colour. XT Line badges are added to the fender vents, C-pillars, wheel caps and also on the left side of the front bumper. Inside the concept, the seats are wrapped in leather and given the same bright red colour of the brake callipers. An XT logo is stitched on both front seats. Carbon fibre trimmings are added to the top part of the gauge cluster and on the door panels as well. As mentioned above, Subaru did not say much about the BRZ XT Line Concept. Hopefully, more details of it will be released later in the future. While we may crave for a turbocharged BRZ, we probably have to wait a little longer for one.     Who owns the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ?

    It's been several months since the production version of the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ was first shown to the world. And as you read this, many countries would have already released these two models. Toyota was the first to unveil the car to the world late last year at the Fuji Speedway race track in Japan and Subaru soon followed suit with their BRZ. First started out as a concept (the FT-86) and now we get to see two versions of it (three if you were to count the Scion FR-S). But, who really owns the 86/BRZ? It is a rather difficult question to answer and it seems that both automakers have their answers or versions to it. An image of a slide (pictured below) stating the development phase of the car has been going around the internet recently; starting from the product planning stage up to the evaluation stage.     Subaru ends its Kei car production

    Turbocharged Subaru BRZ is now confirmed

    Initially when the Subaru BRZ was released recently, Subaru announced that there will be no turbocharged version of their BRZ model. Many in the automotive world were left disappointed. Some felt that it would be a waste for Subaru not to release a powerful version of the car. Furthermore Subaru is known for their expertise in turbocharged engines and since the BRZ is using a boxer engine, that piece of news make it even more disappointing. Just before Subaru showed the BRZ to the world, they said that the car will have less than 300bhp. But eventually it was offered with the same engine and same power specifications as the 86. But latest reports have shown that Subaru will eventually release a turbocharged version of the BRZ. Subaru of America has announced that they are planning on building a turbo version of the boxer engine used in the BRZ in order to create a BRZ Turbo model. Subaru will work on the FA20 boxer engine which is being built at the Oizumi engine manufacturing plant, the same plant where Toyota

  18. Whilst Toyota has suffered from leaked images as regards to their soon to the released FT-86, Subaru has decided to release official pictures of its twin, the Subaru BRZ concept. This preview comes a few weeks ahead of its official debut at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. My first thoughts about the BRZ is that it has edgier styling instead of having more flowing lines compared to Toyota FT-86 especially from the rear. Subaru says that the BRZ is still in the concept car stage, this means that the Toyota FT-86 that is scheduled to be launched in December 2011 will be the first production ready version of the two. But this also means that this is the only car (and its variants) that I am aware of which has been premiered in one form or the other over the last two years. I have seen, or read the FT-86 concept cars being previewed at various motor shows in slightly different forms. This has got to be a record of sorts as Toyota seemed to be showing off a slightly different version at nearly every large motor show out there trying to gauge people's reaction towards this car. I don't know whether this seems to be working as I am this close to getting totally bored of looking at the FT-86 already, before the car is already out. And now with the Subaru BRZ concept we have the Subaru version of the car getting prepped for launch too. This car is getting billed by Subaru as having the production coupe with the lowest center of gravity ever made. I suppose it should, as it will come equipped with the ubiquitous Subaru Flat-Four engine. It seems it will not be turbocharged, but a high revving normally aspirated one, somewhat against current Subaru norms and also the current standard where almost every small performance coupe runs forced induction. But can they just launch a production ready version by yesterday? I just think they're doing too many previews on this car. Imagine if the car's performance fell slightly flat compared to its looks after all the fuss everywhere.
