The gharmen knows very well that if ty do away with the COE n other "taxes" on OWNING a car n increase the taxes on just driving on congested roads(ERP) during peak hours, the charges for ERP wil b very very high which wil chase most motorists away from these ERP taxed roads n cause them to b deserted n the other alternative roads wil b super jam packed every day.

Thats why ty spread the charges around so owning the car already u pay a huge amount of taxes n then using it u pay summore.

This way u can buy the car n even though u do NOT contribute to any jams u have to pay a penalty. Then those who drive during peak times wil still find using their cars still affordable.

But this system is unfair cos it penalises even those who DO NOT add to the jams on the roads.

This goes to show one thing. The total amt of taxes pple pay to own n drive their cars here are extremely high n since ty r spread out, ty dont seem so much to pple.

If the real motorists who cause the jams r taxed what ty sud b taxed then many wil cry fowl to the gharmen. But this is a fairer system.

But then maybe many wil not wan to drive during peak n the roads wil b empty n gharmen wil suffer cos ty wil b getting much less revenue from the "system".

This wud hv solved the problem of jams but these pple wil then end up taking public transport n it just cannot cope with the higher load of passengers.

So in conclusion, our transport system is flawed n the gharmen have not really done anything to really solve the problem. They r just pushing it from here to there then back here again. Just moving it round n round so sometimes cars seem slightly solved, then public transport other times seems like slightly solved.

In reality NOTHING HAS BEEN SOLVED BUT THE PROBLEM HAS ONLY BEEN PUSHED ROUND N ROUND.

I don't think the idea is to solve the problem [sly]

Rather it looks like they like to import more people so as to keep demand for transport and land high [sly]

I thought they are already on trial the "GPS satellite tracking" where they can ERP you anywhere and anytime they like ?

I'm sure this system will go ahead. What is not clear is, with the new ""per use" approach, what is going to change to the existing system (ERP charges, road tax, insurance, COE & etc).

The worse is that, the current system stays and charges us even more with the GPS tracking.

Thats the way I see it also. They want to "balance" things such that certain policies can be justified.

I thought they are already on trial the "GPS satellite tracking" where they can ERP you anywhere and anytime they like ?

My take would be that just like how how most drivers benefitted from erp back in late 97/early 98, ....eventually, the erp charged more compared to the $3 CBD coupon.

Hence, when erp2 starts in 2020, road tax wise, many believe it will be scraped or reduced significantly. Ibelieve that coe would also be tweaked to "demonstrate" the success of the system. But eventually, it will be high coe + high erp2. If road tax really get scrapped,.......just add the "deficit" into erp2.....

Yes explore all yr options.

But still u cant say what u wil do in the end cos things r still not fixed n changing.

I also wil hv to wait till my COE about to expire in early 2016 b4 I can decide what Im going to do.

Like my previous COE CoronaCD I wanted to extend the COE another 10 years but >1 year b4 it expire, the tok was COE going to shoot up cos gharmen going to cut the quota so I acted early n >1 year b4 its COE expire I traded it in for the Optra but if I had just kept it till time to scrap in 2009 the COE had actually dropped to only abt $7K cos the economy suddenly went very bad. [bigcry]

So I also now waiting to see but still hard to predict what wil happen at that time. [confused]

The other thing was that If i get a 2nd hand car from outside, was considering getting something with a "backside". A sedan or wagon. fetch young kids around. These days with all the high profile cases of tipper trucks, cement mixers.... [sweatdrop]

that's why the experts advise LTA distribute coe "evenly" over a period of years ...

every year maintain a sustainable coe quota ... ie: 100k coe per annum regardless of no of coe scrapped

current situation, 100k+ coe dropped to 25k+ coe quota

no of coe scrapped = no of coe released create low and peak coe year

I don't know what they would do with the COE system. But something has to be done.

It seems a bit funny. After buy a High COE new car, you can always scrap the car if COE dropped to stop loss. Thus inside the 10 year cycle, the COE issued in some of the years would be less and less, and the COE issued in other years would be more and more.

There were around 61K CAT A, B, E COE issued from May 2002 to April 2003. But many of those cars scrapped during the period when COE was low. Thus from Feb 2013-Jan 2014, there were only around 22K COE issued.

In the end, we may face a serious problem, maybe 5 of the 10 yrs, there would be almost 0 COE, and the other 5 years, there would be a lot .

actually, i like to luff at people who bought COE at high prices, especially those who bought at 90k. [sweatdrop]

obviously, the rich doesn't matter. the poor? they should have done their homework. Try buying a car during an economic recession and i'm sure COE will cost sub 10k. BUT, would you DARE to buy? [cool]

the smart thing to do is to buy when everyone is selling and sell when everyone is buying. just like stocks. At the end of the day, can you live without a car?

So, why complain when the economy is good and everyone wants to buy? Can always buy 2nd hand cars. SG Carmart got 9000 cars and not even one is suitable? [sly]

used car price is benchmark with new car price

buying used car does not mean sibei smart ... just being a smaller robert than a bigger robert buying new car

so many think for additional few $k depreciate per year might as well buy new car ... with 3 years warranty somemore

i'm talking about B&B car below $200k ... if more high end car the saving would be a little bit more

ok, let's say during the $80k-$90k coe time

ie: $210K 10 years coe new car vs $175K 7 years coe used car ... different $35k but these $35k are the "actual" depreciation for the 1st 3 years (warranty over + new car) ... hence the remaining 7 years depreciation is not very cheap either ... and the second buyer did not gain much from the early years depreciation lost of a new car because the used car dealer also made $10k+ profit from it, no?

during the peak $80k-$90k coe ... you look at used car yearly depreciation ... it's trailing new car price ... not like you said "cheap"

i agree with the benchmark analysis. still, everyone who bought a car in singapore are all bigger roberto than those of other countries.

End of day, i still believe in market forces. If car too ex, everyone dun buy, the dealer will close shop. The problem is, everyone has different fair value to a car. Those who can afford don't mind paying. That's how the dealer survive, and thats why we r still roberts. [:)]

and my current ride depreciation is <$6k/year when i bought it 3 mths ago. Sounds reasonable for me for a H badge car.

look at these two H badge car

PI somemore ... should be cheaper than AD when it was sold new

now, remaining for the 5 year coe ... the price is probably matching new car 5 years ago

to me ... the balance 5 year depreciation for these 2 car is sibei high

yes ... it's cheaper than new car but it's cheap for its apparent reason

coe $3K > http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=391141&DL=2487

coe $10K > http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=397417&DL=2276

Reminds me of a saying I've heard before.

Why find a cure for Cancer / HIV / AIDS / Etc when we can make so much more money for treating its symptoms?

Different industry, same idea... Else cure once already, how to justify for multi-million dollar salaries?

Agreed.

But think buying 2nd hand car is even a bigger robert than buying new cars

Those car with COE less than 10k matches the depreciation of new cars nowadays..

doesn't matter if you drive your car safely up to its full life. matters a lot if you total your car or wanna sell your car before 10 years

In singapore, poor robert buy used car, rich robert buy new car

But ask me if I'm happy being a robert.. i am [laugh].. for convenience

Looks like most car models being scrap this year should be many sunny, camry, vios and altis. There is one carpark at west area wld temporary parked many cars which coe will expire in 1-2 months time or car already been deregistered. I noticed that many of these cars are in quite good condition, interior or exterior. Thinking if these cars are to send to scrapyard to scrap really very wasteful. Unless these cars are exported to other countries then still ok.

Always wondered how come no one feedback to garment or LTA that they are not being environmental friendly having such car policy that cars can only drive 10 years!

This shows environment is not on top of our gharmen list of "Things to Do". [mad]

Making $$$ is.

govt will tell you, you can renew another 10 years coe if you find the car is in good condition

But WHY oh WHY? [confused]

If I renew my COE I lose my scrap value......GONE. [bigcry]

Then also I have to pay additional road tax at +10% every year for the first 5 years then it stays at 150% of the original R.Tax.

Why this additional penalty? [furious] I have alrdy paid the COE which is the permit to use the car on the roads.

In UK old cars can b registered as a "classic" car n pay very little or NO R.Tax at all.

Always win situation for garment!

As been proven time n time again....All their policies r based on making more $$$ for gharmen.

Taking the $$$ out of our pockets n putting it into theirs. [furious]

Maybe its a time for a change of gharmen n we see if the new gharmen is same or better?

I doubt can b worse.
