Subaru has given us a teaser photo of an STI wing affixed to the rear boot of a BRZ. Is Subaru finally giving us the BRZ STi that fans always wanted? Shown on its Twitter and Instagram pages this large GT wing is identical to the one recently fitted to a BRZ prototype spotted testing near a company facility in Michigan. According to Carscoops, there is no information on whether the BRZ teased here is a full blown STi model or a Japan-only model that focuses only on handling and aero enhancement. Luckily for those who can't wait, the answer will be out soon as the company will reveal more on the car come 8th of June 2017.

Here's the reason why the 86/BRZ will not be turbocharged
chitchatboy posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
With the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ already in production for five years, it seems unlikely that they will be turbocharged anytime in the future. But why? According to CarAdvice which posted to the question to Tetsuya Tada, Chief Engineer for the 86 and the upcoming Supra, the answer is because it would require a new platform in order for the bosses to be satisfied with it. "If we come up with a turbo version of the 86 and boost up the power that would result in the necessity of changing the basic configuration completely, to come up with a car I would be satisfied with". He then went on to explain that the weight distribution would be severely affected if the 86/BRZ was turbocharged. Do you believe this is the real reason or is it more of a marketing move that will allow the Supra to have some breathing space with its superior power output? Let us know in the comment box below! -
Here's yet another special edition BRZ from Subaru. Set to appear at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, the car is dubbed the BRZ STi Sport. Not much is known about the car other than it receiving a retuned suspension to complement the otherwise mostly cosmetic enhancements inside and out. Nothing in terms of power upgrades were mentioned too. Available in this unique shade of Cook Grey Khaki, the car is made for the Japanese market and is limted to 100 units with customers to be selected by lottery.

Subaru to debut BRZ STI Sport concept at 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon
Deeq posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Subaru and its official performance arm STI have an interesting concept based on the BRZ due for a reveal at the upcoming 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon. The concept is called the BRZ STI Sport and is described as a more mature take on the Subaru sports car. The only other information Subaru is willing to tell us right now is that the concept is fitted with 18-inch aluminum wheels and a handful of STI body enhancements, including a front lip spoiler and side skirts. For the interior, the designers have added a rich burgundy color. The car will be joined by a second STI Sport concept based on the WRX S4. The WRX S4 is a more powerful, CVT-equipped WRX sold exclusively in Japan since 2014. STI Sport is the name Subaru uses for models with a bit of extra potency under the hood and a few bolt-on parts from the STI catalog. It was first applied on the Levorg STI Sport introduced to the Japanese market in May. The two latest concepts suggest Subaru is ready to expand the STI Sport option to the BRZ and WRX lines. The 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon runs from January 13-15 at the Makuhari Messe in the Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo. -
Shortly after Toyota unveiled its latest 86 coupe, photos of its refreshed twin, the Subaru BRZ, has surfaced onto the web. Shared by the people on ft86club forum, the cars shown here could be pre-production versions of the 2017 BRZ and as such, may not incorporate all the upgrades we’ll see on the showroom models. From what we can see, the refreshed BRZ gets new LED rear lights, new front headlights, a new front bumper and a new alloy wheel design. Inside, an updated instrument panel and a new steering wheel feature. The new wheel gets larger paddle shifters too. As of now, no official reveal date for the new BRZ has been known yet but we don't think it will take long for it to be officially launched.

Stunt driver sets record for the tightest 360 degree spin in a BRZ
chitchatboy posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Stunt driver Alastair Moffat has set a new Guinness World Record for the tightest 360 degree spin in a Subaru BRZ in one continuous motion. Driving the Japanese coupe at around 48km/h, he spins the car in between two rows of cars which are just 2.25 metres apart. The previous record was held at 2.5 metres and was done in a front-wheel drive car. Nothing has been done to the BRZ other than plucking out a few of the fuses in the fuse box to disable the traction control and ABS systems. Alastair is also the current record holder for a few other records including the "Tightest Reverse Parallel Park" and "Tightest Parallel Park" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=699J3ig_mok -
Toyota recently showcased a TRD version of the Toyota 86 at the Paris Motor Show. Toyota added a slew of TRD accessories on it which consists of items such as rear diffusers, larger sports wheels, adjustable suspension system and etc. Looks like owners or future buyers of the Toyota 86 will be spoilt for choices. But what about the owners or future buyers of the Subaru BRZ? Are they going to be stuck with the stock look or wait for aftermarket parts from third party manufacturers? Actually, they do not have to wait long because Subaru has come up with a concept for the BRZ. Known as the Subaru BRZ XT Line Concept, the Japanese automaker has given the already good-looking BRZ a more custom look. Rumour has it that the BRZ XT Line Concept could introduce a line of accessories or parts for the BRZ and also it could be the beginning of a forced-induced version of the car. The designation XT may sound familiar to some and that is because Subaru has used it before to name a certain model. The Subaru XT (known as the Subaru Alcyone in its home market) was a two door sports car that was available during the mid 1980s and up to the early 1990s. And the XT tag was also used on the Subaru Forester (second generation onwards) to denote the turbocharged versions. Details of the concept car was not given out but lets use the images as a guide to see what Subaru has added or changed. Firstly, the most obvious additions to the car are the carbon fibre parts (or just a carbon fibre wrap) of the side mirror, roof panel and rear spoiler. The blacked-out look extends to the eleven-spoke sports wheels. Bright red brake callipers (with a Subaru wording on it) are situated on all four corners of the car and they give the car some contrast in colour. XT Line badges are added to the fender vents, C-pillars, wheel caps and also on the left side of the front bumper. Inside the concept, the seats are wrapped in leather and given the same bright red colour of the brake callipers. An XT logo is stitched on both front seats. Carbon fibre trimmings are added to the top part of the gauge cluster and on the door panels as well. As mentioned above, Subaru did not say much about the BRZ XT Line Concept. Hopefully, more details of it will be released later in the future. While we may crave for a turbocharged BRZ, we probably have to wait a little longer for one. In the meantime, we can only enjoy these images. Photo credit: copyright of Drew Phillips / AOL

Photos of this extreme big-winged BRZ has been spotted floating around on the net recently. Caught at the upcoming New York Auto Show, no one seems to know what version of this BRZ could be. Unless much mistaken, this should be the global debut of this concept car and looks like it would be a preview for faster BRZ. We doubt the L-shaped LED lights would make it to production even if we wanted. Or this could be an elaborate April fool's by Subaru? Hmmmmm....

One of the largest criticism of the BRZ/86 pair is it lack of power. While it is widely known as one of best handling car sensible money can buy, fans of it are calling out for more power. And like most high performance Subarus, it needs to be turbocharged. Well, it seems like an Austrian company, Speedheads Performance, has managed to sort that out by doing an engine swap with the new Subaru 2.0-litre FA20 DIT (direct injection turbo) engine which can be found in the WRX and the Levorg. While many others have successfully turbocharged/supercharged or do an engine swap with the BRZ/86 pair, these guys might be the first one few to fit a boosted Subaru engine in it. With the engine outputting 295bhp and 400Nm in original form, we are sure the BRZ would feel like a totally different car now. Those who enjoy drifting should definitely find it much easier to get the tail out judging from our encounter with the engine in a lesser state of tune in the WRX. Watch the clip below to and notice how easy it is to get the wheels to spin! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wumAOXFbb78

Subaru revealed the new BRZ tS that is fettled by STi recently and it comes equipped with many yummy STi parts. But sadly, nothing has been done to increase power output. That said, there is still quite a bit of good stuff on this car that will make fans of the car and marque drool. One of the more interesting improvements is the exclusive filter for the interior Sound Creator. We aren't sure how that works but based on the photo above, the extra padding on the wheel housing and the dashboard seems like it was meant to lessen road noise! Elsewhere, the STI body-kit, complete with revised front and rear bumpers and sakura-red accents adorn the car. 17-inch ventilated Brembo disc brakes by STI (front and back) feature and is covered by 18-inch STI-designed, black coloured alloys. On the handling front, STi equips the BRZ with a STI-tuned, inverted-strut front suspension and modified rear damper - mated with STI coils and STI-designed lateral links. A flexible V-shaped bar and a draw stiffener strut at the front makes sure that the already stiff chassis doesn’t flex when cornering hard. A custom tuned Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) allows the pros to push the car harder before the car's computer intrudes. Inside, STI logos fill the car - from the custom STI push button ignition to the sakura-red ventilation grills and everything in between. It even comes with a 'tS Limited Edition 300' badge. Yes, this model’s production will be limited to 300 units and it will come in three colour choices: Sunrise Yellow, WR Blue Pearl and Crystal Black Silica.

Subaru recently announced that they will be releasing a track-ready BRZ straight from the assembly line. It is known as the BRZ RA Racing and this version is made exclusively for the Japanese market. Just like any other track or racing versions of the BRZ (or Toyota 86), the BRZ RA Racing is fitted with essential items a person needs when he/she hits the racing tracks. Luxurious comforts such as air-conditioning and stereo players have been left out and replaced with a six-point roll cage (with sidebar), a four point FIA certified racing harness and new floor mats. The BRZ RA Racing was designed with braking performance in mind. The front end receives brake ducts and both front and rear brakes get ventilated discs. The car also receives a Torsen limited slip differential. Removable front and rear tow hooks are placed for easy transportation tasks. In the engine bay, the only additional item is an air-cooled engine cooler and it is clearly seen at the left side of the front snout. Main reasons why the 2.0-litre Boxer engine is left untouched is because that most track enthusiasts would prefer to use their own racing components or parts. As mentioned above, the Subaru BRZ RA Racing is made only for the Japanese market and it is priced at around US$31,500.

Initially when the Subaru BRZ was released recently, Subaru announced that there will be no turbocharged version of their BRZ model. Many in the automotive world were left disappointed. Some felt that it would be a waste for Subaru not to release a powerful version of the car. Furthermore Subaru is known for their expertise in turbocharged engines and since the BRZ is using a boxer engine, that piece of news make it even more disappointing. Just before Subaru showed the BRZ to the world, they said that the car will have less than 300bhp. But eventually it was offered with the same engine and same power specifications as the 86. But latest reports have shown that Subaru will eventually release a turbocharged version of the BRZ. Subaru of America has announced that they are planning on building a turbo version of the boxer engine used in the BRZ in order to create a BRZ Turbo model. Subaru will work on the FA20 boxer engine which is being built at the Oizumi engine manufacturing plant, the same plant where Toyota

Subaru teased us with a photo of the BRZ with the enticing STi logo on its Japanese website a few days ago. However, it turns out that it is actually a tS edition, which will commence selling soon. The Subaru tS edition will be available for sale in two different versions - the standard BRZ tS and the BRZ tS 'GT-package'. The white car seen here is fitted with the 'GT-package' comes with new 17-inch lightweight black alloy rims, a more pronounced front lip, side skirt and rear bumper. It will also get lower springs, sports muffler, front strut tower bar and some interior trimmings. Bigger Brembo brakes, Bilstein dampers, lightweight driveshaft, Recaro seats and a GT carbon fibre wing are some of the features that buyers can get for this car. The standard tS makes do with the aforementioned bodykit, springs, muffler, strut bar and the minor interior details. A total of 500 units will be produced and it will very likely be a Japan-only model. Tough luck for us locals! We wonder if Subaru will produce a full blown turbocharged STi version of the BRZ. We are definitely crossing our fingers for that one!

Both are 2L NA, RWD and priced very closely. Which one will you choose?

Not letting the hype over the brilliant BRZ die down, Subaru came up with another variant of the sports coupe to let its fans stay happy. Named the BRZ Premium Sport Edition, it is supposed to be a more luxurious and refined version of the famed coupe. Sadly, not much has been done to increase the driving performance. But then, it is already such a wonderful driver’s car. What they did provide the car were black painted door mirrors and STi aluminium wheels exterior wise. Interestingly, they stuck with 17-inchers, which probably have the best grip/drift balance for the car. Interior wise, the car's seats and steering wheel are wrapped in brown and black leather with tan stitching on some details. The bright red STi push engine start button is a nice welcome too. Overall, this is a nice edition for the BRZ but we are pretty sure local buyers won’t be able to get their hands on it even though it might lure one or two buyers away from a Z4 or SLK.

Damn... i want that Nismo version NISSAN IDX CONCEPT Nissan's global vice president Andy Palmer promised fans that a response to Toyota's popular 86 coupe - its "mid-life crisis car" - would debut at this week's Tokyo Motor Show. Here it is: the IDx concepts, revealed here in a racing Nismo trim, alongside a more road-focused 'Freeflow' design. Both concepts are of course heavily inspired by Nissan's rich history of two-door models, including the hugely popular 510 Bluebird of the 60s and 70s, know here as the Datsun 1600. There's a touch of the classic 'Hakosuka' Skyline coupe in the IDx's design, too. Really, you could sink hours into finding familiar features in this new concept's classic look. In the case of the Nismo concept, there's also a colour scheme that will be instantly recognisable to fans, evoking memories of the legendary Team BRE 510 race car - badged as a Datsun back then, of course. A set of large wide-open alloy wheels prop up each corner, surrounded by guards inspired by the bolt-on flares seen on racing cars of years past - and even today in some classes. While the Nismo concept gets a decidely more modern headlight and tail-light designs, the Freeflow is all retro. Four circular headlights hark back to classic sedans and coupes, and a silver insert panel is a clear nod to the old steel bumpers. Even the paint job is a classic - just about every car in the 60s and 70s offered a tan, sand or beige option. (These days, the closest you'll get is a champagne, or 'premium beige' if you will... - Ed.) But, despite its vintage styling, Nissan says it designed the IDx for 'Generation Z', a group it calls "digital natives". The generation born after 1990, drawing on feedback from younger fans in the creation of the IDx twins. And so the obvious question: will we see the IDx in showrooms? Nissan isn't saying yet, but it isn't writing off the idea, either. Buyer feedback will be a key decider, however. If you're keen on this slice of modernised history, get on the phone. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It’s a brave man who can come out with barrels blazing and say that he thinks buyers of the Toyota 86 or Subaru BRZ are having a ‘midlife crisis’. That’s exactly what Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer said recently when referring to two of the hottest, most affordable sports cars to venture forth from Japan in a decade. So can Nissan do any better? Apparently yes. “You’ll see our answer to the midlife crisis at the Tokyo Motor Show. Except it won’t be for a midlife crisis,” added Palmer. “It’ll be aimed at young and middle-aged types alike.” In a marketplace where Generation Z is losing interest in cars and car culture, Nissan is trying to generate some appeal and inject passion back into motoring with a radical new two door, rear wheel drive concept car, the IDx. Nissan designers and conceptualists say that customer paradigms are changing significantly which means that a new style of car must be created to appeal to a changing customer base. Trying to appeal to digital natives who value IT and social media networks as the new communication tools of the 21st Century is the key, says one designer. The car has to be stylish, offer the right combination of social networking tools including Bluetooth, Internet and GPS satnav connectivity, and also drive well. But Nissan’s product planners realised that these features were not enough to create a car that catches the eye as well as the heart. So, to fill in the blanks in this, its 80th anniversary, Nissan decided to delve back into its rich heritage of sports cars and race cars to find inspiration for such a car. As chief designer Satoru Tai says, “We are talking about models like the Datsun 1600, Skyline and Laurel from the 1960s and '70s. That is where we sourced our inspiration. "We conceived the IDx through direct interaction with Generation Z who seek a compact, minimalistic sedan-shaped coupe,” he said. Boasting a low and wide stance, the IDx is actually a little smaller in wheelbase than the 86 and BRZ, explains Tai. And a quick look at the IDx’s silhouette reveals these design slants. As an owner of a Datsun 1600 back in university, this writer can definitely see some 1600 influence in the IDx’s side profile. And while this design is fresh and new but with retro hints for young buyers, the overall design seems all too familiar yet appealing for buyers in their 40s who grew up watching 1600s and Skylines appear on the roads. Tai went onto say that one other aspect of this concept that he thought important for young and mid-aged buyers alike would be a rear-wheel drive platform. Nissan was being tight-lipped about the powertrain, but one engineer suggested that a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre engine generating around 110kW (150hp) would most probably find its way into the IDx’s engine bay. To pluck at the heartstrings of all those who long for the “new,” but with a touch of nostalgia, Nissan will also be unveiling an IDx Nismo version draped in the company’s traditional racing colours and featuring bigger wheels and raunchy aeroparts and interior appointments. If Nissan's Executive Vice President Andy Palmer has anything to do with this car, we could see the IDx in showrooms as early as 2016.

Ford Focus ST takes on the Golf R and later on, the Subaru BRZ!
SYF77 posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oapP8qzehI In a recent episode of Head to Head, Carlos Lago pits the Ford Focus ST against its arch rival, the VW Golf R. Not only that, the Focus ST has to face off against the Subaru BRZ subsequently, a situation which I will explain later on. Hence, the Focus ST is in a situation similar to a participant in WWE's 'King of The Ring' tournament. Can the hottest version of the Focus take the heat? Both the Golf R and Focus ST are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged power plant. The models in the test are equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. Even their horse power ratings are quite close to each other - 256bhp for the German and 252bhp for the American. However, the Golf R has an AWD configuration while the Focus ST sends the power to the front wheels. As the stability control in the US Golf R cannot be turned off, it was replaced with the Subaru BRZ during the race track portion of the evaluation. This part of the test is conducted by Randy Pobst, a professional race car driver. He commented that the BRZ has probably the best balanced handling on the whole market right now. Tough luck for the Focus ST it may seem. Tighten your seat belts and watch the video to find out!-

Subaru BRZ official pictures- Can Toyota or Subaru launch this car now?
Rigval posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Whilst Toyota has suffered from leaked images as regards to their soon to the released FT-86, Subaru has decided to release official pictures of its twin, the Subaru BRZ concept. This preview comes a few weeks ahead of its official debut at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. My first thoughts about the BRZ is that it has edgier styling instead of having more flowing lines compared to Toyota FT-86 especially from the rear. Subaru says that the BRZ is still in the concept car stage, this means that the Toyota FT-86 that is scheduled to be launched in December 2011 will be the first production ready version of the two. But this also means that this is the only car (and its variants) that I am aware of which has been premiered in one form or the other over the last two years. I have seen, or read the FT-86 concept cars being previewed at various motor shows in slightly different forms. This has got to be a record of sorts as Toyota seemed to be showing off a slightly different version at nearly every large motor show out there trying to gauge people's reaction towards this car. I don't know whether this seems to be working as I am this close to getting totally bored of looking at the FT-86 already, before the car is already out. And now with the Subaru BRZ concept we have the Subaru version of the car getting prepped for launch too. This car is getting billed by Subaru as having the production coupe with the lowest center of gravity ever made. I suppose it should, as it will come equipped with the ubiquitous Subaru Flat-Four engine. It seems it will not be turbocharged, but a high revving normally aspirated one, somewhat against current Subaru norms and also the current standard where almost every small performance coupe runs forced induction. But can they just launch a production ready version by yesterday? I just think they're doing too many previews on this car. Imagine if the car's performance fell slightly flat compared to its looks after all the fuss everywhere.-

It's been several months since the production version of the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ was first shown to the world. And as you read this, many countries would have already released these two models. Toyota was the first to unveil the car to the world late last year at the Fuji Speedway race track in Japan and Subaru soon followed suit with their BRZ. First started out as a concept (the FT-86) and now we get to see two versions of it (three if you were to count the Scion FR-S). But, who really owns the 86/BRZ? It is a rather difficult question to answer and it seems that both automakers have their answers or versions to it. An image of a slide (pictured below) stating the development phase of the car has been going around the internet recently; starting from the product planning stage up to the evaluation stage. This image is rumoured to be from Toyota Motor Corporation. The image shows that Fuji Heavy Industries

Sales numbers for the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ has proven that the car is big hit with the consumers and it is not surprising that other automakers are taking notes about it. It is reported that Nissan is developing its own sports coupe to compete with Toyota and Subaru after been given the green light. This is not the first time Nissan has plans to develop a compact sports model. In 2008, Nissan was working on a 200SX/Silvia successor but the world economy at that time doesn't look too good and the idea was shelved. Now, a good question to ask is; how will the car look like? During last year's Shanghai Motor Show, Nissan unveiled a concept known as the Nissan Sport Compact Concept. It was rather small in size and it was dubbed the Nissan March on steroids. It gets a 1.6-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine that delivers 190bhp and a torque of 240Nm; most probably the same engine from the Nissan Juke. It is rumoured that the car will built on the Nissan Juke's platform and the project is known as the "Mini-Z" within the company. Since it is going to be built on the Juke's platform, the car could be either in front wheel drive or four wheel drive. If the same engine shown in the concept is chosen, then the car will have around 10 horsepower lesser than the 86/BRZ but with more torque. With Nissan planning to start production of the car in the fourth quarter of next year, expect to see a concept version of it by early next year. Photo credit: Auto Blog

The triplet siblings of the Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S are the most anticipated Japanese sports cars in recent years. Why would I say that? Basically, Toyota has not offered a sports coupe model ever since the early 2000s and this has made JDM lovers more excited over it. Toyota has built desirable sport coupes since the 1960s, from the 2000GT to the Supra, and these cars are sought after by many enthusiasts all around the world. These enthusiasts love them not because of their performance but more on its simplicity and some would swear that these cars handle so sweetly. Enough talk about cars of the past and let us continue on what Toyota and Subaru has in store for the 86 and BRZ. Let
