  1. old topic with a new twist. An Italian village will pay you €5,000 to live there. Here's how to apply Story by By WALLA! TOURISM • Yesterday 9:15 am A street is covered in volcanic ashes from Mount Etna in Piedimonte Etneo, Italy October 23, 2021.© (photo credit: ANTONIO PARRINELLO/REUTERS) On a lofty ridge on the island of Sicily stands one of the most beautiful villages in Italy: Petralia Soprana. Sicily - the largest island in Italy - offers its visitors plenty of sunny days, lovely beaches and also excellent food. Now, this small village is making the dream of living on an island a reality. Petralia Soprana, located southeast of the city of Palermo, is currently offering cash incentives for new residents. Euronews reported that the village council hopes that the new plan will help to repair the decline of the local population - and will also breathe new life into many abandoned houses. This is not the first time Italy incentivized migration, and this is also common in other places in Europe. 50 empty houses are waiting for you Those interested in living in this beautiful village should apply as soon as possible - the deadline is May 10 (this Wednesday). Those who are selected - will be entitled to receive an amount of 5,000 euros (for a family or an individual). In return, you must commit to moving your permanent residence to the village. As to be expected, there is "small print" here: to be eligible for a grant you must also purchase a property in the village, and if necessary, also repair it. Today, after decades of the village's population slowly leaving, there are 2,992 residents left, as well as more than 50 empty houses. The village itself offers narrow alleys winding between stone houses that were built back in the Middle Ages. From the village, you can enjoy the sight of the countryside, including a view of the active volcano Etna. In the village stands a monumental stone church built on a rock outcrop and the central square where an impressive cathedral from the Renaissance is housed. It is believed that a mosque originally stood on the site, from when the place was ruled by the Muslims, in the tenth century AD. The unique bell tower still showcases Byzantine-Arab decorations. This mixed style of architecture even recently received UNESCO World Heritage status in nearby Palermo. (credit: ANTONIO PARRINELLO/REUTERS) A food festival dedicated to...lentils Life in Petralia Soprana is incredibly peaceful, except for the period when local celebrations are held (and there are quite a few of them), including holidays dedicated to local saints and other carnivals and food festivals. It is interesting to discover that one of the village's famous food fairs is dedicated to lentils, which are used to prepare a traditional soup with wild fennel and chicory. The application can be submitted directly on the local municipality's website. However, there is an obstacle: the entire website is written in Italian, without an English or Hebrew translation.
  2. SINGAPORE: A case of imported monkeypox infection has been confirmed in Singapore. The patient is a 38-year-old Nigerian who arrived on Apr 28 and tested positive for the virus on May 8, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) in a media release on Thursday (May 9). He is in stable condition in an isolation ward at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID), the ministry added. Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by a virus that is transmitted to humans from animals mainly in central and western Africa. This happens when a person comes in close contact with infected animals such as rodents. Human-to-human transmission can happen from close contact with infected respiratory tract secretions, skin lesions of an infected person or objects recently contaminated by patient fluids. Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, aches, swollen lymph nodes and skin rash. It can cause serious complications such as pneumonia or even death in some cases. "The patient reported that prior to his arrival in Singapore, he had attended a wedding in Nigeria, where he may have consumed bush meat, which could be a source of transmission of monkeypox virus," said MOH. The man had been staying at 21 Lorong 8 Geylang, the address of Hotel 81 Orchid, before he was hospitalised. He had also attended a workshop at 3 Church Street on Apr 29 and Apr 30. On Apr 30, he developed fever, muscle ache, chills and skin rash, said MOH, adding that the man said he remained in his hotel room most of the time between May 1 and 7. He was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital by ambulance on May 7, and was referred to NCID that same day. CONTACT TRACING MOH said it conducted contact tracing and identified 23 people who came into close contact with the patient. They include 18 people who attended the same workshop, one staff member of the workshop venue and four hotel employees. "Close contacts of the patient have been assessed by NCID and offered vaccination, which can prevent the disease or reduce the severity of symptoms," said MOH. "As a precautionary measure, they will be quarantined and monitored for 21 days from their date of exposure to the patient." The risk of monkeypox spreading within the community in Singapore is low, said executive director of NCID Professor Leo Yee Sin. "There is no evidence to date that human-to-human transmission alone can sustain monkeypox infections in the human population," Prof Leo said. "On average, each infected person transmits the infection to less than one other person. This is much less infectious than the common flu. The chain of transmission can also be broken through contact tracing and quarantine of close contacts.” MOH added that the disease is usually self-limiting, with most patients recovering within two to three weeks.

  4. Was reported in today's paper, on a per capita basis, those that got their license in Singapore cause three times as many accidents as those that got their license elsewhere and converted. So to all those that bash the atrocious driving standards of "ATB" and whatever the fark else - Nyah nyah boo boo yeah ok - I'm beign a pratt, but seriously, a very interesting statistic. One hopes that it is properly calculated and takes the relevant things into account. Once also hopes that it clarifies abit on the perception that many hold.

  6. Yet another person pulled off this stunt successfully STOMPer Justin's father, who is a cabby, encountered this man who reportedly refused to pay the $10.20 fare after reaching his destination at Normanton Park. According to his father, the man had got on the cab near Boat Quay and appeared to be drunk. When his father made a police report, the police told him that they could not help, said the STOMPer. STOMPer Justin wrote: On May 17, my dad, who is a taxi driver, came back home after an ugly encounter with a drunk passenger. "As shown in the police report, my dad picked up this Caucasian from around Boat Quay. "Upon reaching his destination at Normanton Park, the drunk passenger unreasonably refused to pay the fare. "He then argued, saying 'Why should I pay?' "My dad then told him that he will call the police if he refused to pay the fare and he challenged my dad to 'carry on'. "Two policemen arrived on the scene five minutes after my dad called the police. "However, all they did were to find out what happened and recorded my father's ID and told him to go to the police station the following day to make a report. "They never even tried to look for and question the passenger, who by then was in his house. "After my dad made the police report, they told my dad that they cannot do anything to help also. "Throughout this incident, the police did not even try to contact the passenger. "My dad, who has no details of the passenger, also cannot seek help from his company. "We did not post this story because we want him to pay up. "The issue of the money is small, but, in this case, if even the police cannot do anything, then what are the taxi drivers going to do if this type of incident happens more? "I believe this could happen to any taxi driver in Singapore. "The sad thing here is that the passenger got off so easily, while my poor dad does not even know what else he can do."

  8. Anyone can enlighten me. The news announced by LHL on the increased limit for the S-pass to $3000 from $2800(now) from $2500(July). Does this mean the existing S-pass holder will be getting a confirmed pay raise soon? Correct? Or only for new applicant? Then surely the existing holder will also ask for higher pay right? How about the side by side Singaporean colleagues of these S-pass holder....can also legally ask for pay raise to match or not? Singapore’s government, facing complaints from residents having to compete with foreigners for jobs, tightened rules on Tuesday for firms hiring overseas workers in mid-level positions. The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) is under pressure to slow the rise in the number of foreigners seeking work in the rich city-state after May parliamentary elections that saw the opposition make historic gains. Labour shortages mean the country has to rely on immigrant workers for many jobs. The unhappiness voiced by voters in the run-up to the elections included competition for jobs and places in schools. Starting in January next year, a foreigner must earn $3,000 or more a month before he can qualify for an employment pass that will let him work in Singapore. Singapore in July raised the minimum qualifying salary to $2,800 from $2,500. “Our aim is to avoid increasing dependence on foreign workers over the long term, by keeping the foreign share of the workforce at about one-third,” the Ministry of Manpower said in a statement.
  9. CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1146843/1/.html "Lee Kuan Yew has acknowledged the pressures new immigrants have placed on citizens and home prices in the country." "Mr Lee said: "We've done a revamp and HDB has promised that within four years, the supply will meet the demand. It will be resolved." But home prices aside, citizens are feeling the pressure in other aspects. Mr Lee said: "On competition for jobs, and especially competition, pressure on their children to do well in schools. The new migrants having left his home must go all out to succeed in the country that he or she has adopted. "That is to be expected and therefore, we must accept that they are going to do their best and if doing their best puts pressure on us, our children, it may be good for them because they will also have to put in effort to do their best to keep up." So People of Singapore, we finally hear from the Horse's mouth that current Singapore government believe in putting "Pressure" on Singaporeans to maximum results from your blood and sweat. If not getting expected result, the Singapore government was the choice to mass-import non-locals to keep up that "Pressure". In July this year, only weeks before Singapore's 46 NDP, LKY stated "'Singapore can't punch above its own weight if it depends on local talent" at South Asian Diaspora convention hosted to show case non-local "Talents". So, People of Singapore, some ex-cabinet ministers now sees Singaporeans as a liability. You have wasted your time and effort in NS and all those national campigns in the last 40 years....because you are "old", "no vitality and no drive".. Hard Truth for Singaporean or those New immigrants? I say BOTH. If those new immigrants are "younger, has vitality and drive", why are they leaving their bigger resource-rich bigger home countries and coming to this little Red Dot to work and still complain? While at the same time, Singaporeans have been asked to contribute charitable works in those impoverished communities in countries like Philippines, to India and China where majority of these new immigrants from. Shouldn't these thousands of immigrants here able to contribute their "youth, vitality and drive" where their own home town are most needed? I find recent LKY's post-GE statements both perplexing and misleading. These mass-importation of immigrants within last few years serves only as TOOL to create division and tension in Singapore in the name of GDP which Singapore's Ministers pay and bonuses are pegged to.

  13. In and interview with British mag Autocar, Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa hinted that the next Enzo will come with a twin-turbo, direct injection V8. Currently, Ferrari's flagship model is served by a 6.0 liter V12. Felisa was short on details but did say that the storied Italian supercar maker had ruled out rumors of producing a 6-cylinder power plant until there is a change in customer attitudes towards smaller engines. "The perception today is that the number of cylinders equates to the possibilities of the car. That is why we are developing hybrid technology that can be applied to our V8 and V10 cars," Felisa is quoted as saying in the Autocar story. The Ferrari chief also said that the automaker would not be expanding its use of carbon fiber materials across its model range - as is being done at competitors such as McLaren, BMW and Mercedes. Although, it will be used for the new Enzo since it is a low volume production car not used for everyday driving. "The fact is that nobody today has a real understanding of what happens if you damage a carbon fiber structure," said Felisa. The next Ferrari Enzo is due in 2012. Source: autocar.co.uk
  14. Mercedes-Benz plans to begin production of a new, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, with sales and assembly scheduled for a 2011 launch. A press release from the automaker marks the first time the car has been confirmed officially. The coupe will be manufactured in Bremen, Germany, next to the three other C-Class models, including the GLK SUV. All four models will be produced on the same flexible line at the facility, which is also responsible for the E-Class, SL and SLK. When the C-Class Coupe hits the market, it will serve as a replacement to the CLC, according to a Mercedes press release. It will likely be sold at about the same time as the facelifted C-Class four-door and five-door, and will most definitely not look like the CLC sketches we previously revealed. "We went back and studied what made our coupes so popular in the past," an unidentified source told Autocar. "If you look at some of the more successful two-door models Mercedes-Benz has produced, you can see a direct relationship between them and their four-door stablemates." The new coupe is expected to look more like the other C-Class models, and less like the cancelled CLK. The entire C-Class lineup will be due for its fourth generation introduction in 2014, meaning this version of the two-door will only be available for a few years. Because of this, the automaker is not expected to release a convertible version of this particular two-door. "We did look at an open-top version but in the end the costs were too high given the short model life," the source told Autocar.

  16. Ferrari will officially unveil the Ferrari 599 Hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The decision was announced when Ferrari and Fiat chairman Luca di Montezemolo introduced the 2010 Ferrari F10 Formula 1 car earlier today. The two-seat 599, designed by Pininfarina, is expected to be a petrol/electric making use of lithium-ion batteries. A kinetic energy recovery system (KERS), developed by the company's F1 team, is expected to appear on the hybrid along with regenerative braking. With a KERS in place an electric power boost is also probable. Look for start/stop to also appear on the hybrid. In the end, the car is expected to reduce fuel consumption by nearly 35%. This would bring combined economy ratings to 14 mpg. At the event, di Montezemolo also mentioned that the automaker will continue to adapt F1 technology for its street vehicles. Ferrari will also continue to look for ways to improve their cars' efficiency as part of the board's plan to make the company more sustainable.
