  1. Are LED lights subject to brightness checks? Sources: https://www.straitstimes.com/forum/letters-on-the-web/led-lights-on-cars-can-cause-momentary-blindness Many new cars are being fitted with LED lights. While LED lights come with benefits, such as being more energy-efficient, long-lasting and are cheaper, their main drawback is that they are too bright. Often, they can cause momentary blindness for drivers on the road. More often than not, many drivers on the road at night are tired after a long day at work and are eager to drive home quickly. Add to that the glare from these lights, and the driver's judgment may be impaired momentarily, leading to an accident. Does the Land Transport Authority conduct quality checks to regulate the appropriate use of such lights? Action ought to be taken against drivers who deliberately switch to their high beam to irritate other road users.
  2. Tighter checks on carpark wardens promised by HDB The Straits Times reported that the Housing and Development Board (HDB) has promised to step up its carpark monitoring with tighter checks, after an unsatisfactory report card from the Auditor-General's Office (AGO) on Wednesday. The AGO's annual report found that both statutory boards had been lax in monitoring their parking wardens. Some of these wardens, who were hired under contracts, failed to check all vehicles, others did not turn up for duty at all. 88 surprise checks conducted by the AGO found five instances where patrolling officers were not present at their patrol sites, despite indicating that they were. It also found 26 instances where wardens did not inspect all vehicles in the carparks, although they were required to do so. An HDB spokesman said it will be conducting more checks on wardens to ensure compliance. It will also introduce e-parking systems at "more carparks where it is technically feasible to do so". URA will do the same for all of its 200 off-street carparks where feasible. E-parking systems have already been implemented at 368 of the existing 1,800 HDB carparks. This minimises the need for manual checks by wardens.

  8. This guy proposes traffic enforcers not to be sneaky but visible when conducting speed checks so as to act as a deterent. Will it work? From today's online ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_642535.html Danger lurks in overhead speed checks I AM doubtful about the effectiveness of anti-speeding checks by officers perched on overhead bridges. Regular motorists know of these locations and usually slow down as they approach them to ascertain if a traffic officer is there. They would then react appropriately. The process may divert motorists' attention from the road as they look up and focus on the overhead bridge. The danger is exacerbated when officers try and make themselves as inconspicuous as possible, forcing drivers to divert more attention away from driving by trying to spot these officers. If the aim of such traps is to reduce speeding, a person standing in plain sight with a camera would do the job just as effectively. Permanent speed detectors should be installed wherever feasible as a long-term solution. Using overhead bridges should serve as only a short-term deterrent. If the traffic authorities insist on using this option, the officer with the speed trap recorder should not play hide-and-seek with drivers. Ho Kei-Leong

  11. I'm thinking of driving up north to Malaysia during the coming Lunar New YEar and being a newbie at such road trip, I thought of preparing both my car and myself before the trip. Was thinking of sending my car in for a pre-trip check up and servicing before the trip in End Jan at CAS. Not too sure is the centre provide such service ? Also will be getting a Garmin sys from friend to aid in navigation. Are these enough are more needs to be done ? P.S. How about the battery do I Need to change one as my current bat is about 2 years old ?
  12. Just came back from BM, Sin Ming after sending my MPV there for 20,000km servicing package. Looking at the servicing package A & B. For 20,000km, it was adviced to take the package B. The cost for this package is $393/- for syn oil. (Prices have gone up since my last package A servicing enquiry for my next servicing on package B) A list of items (more than 100) were listed in package B and I was wondering, how to know if they (AD workshop) ensure their customers that all those items listed will be checked & serviced by their mechanics. The place is packs with cars coming for servicing (even brand new cars SGY) and with a handful of mechanics. As the prices for servicing had gone up, will they cover all items as listed? My last servicing there, their service chits only shows tick, tick, tick in the box but did they really did it? btw, charge $15/- for balancing as I request for rotation of wheels. So total bill is expected $408/- & collection at 3.00pm.
  13. I am not amazed when I read in today ST that MY Gov department paid dubious prices for items which cost much less on the street. Could not imagine how their AG department could approved RM117 million on 2 helicopters for their police force which does not suit their operational requirement. Both helicopters landed in the fire department instead with additional cost thrown in for training pilots to fly them. Paid RM70 for a set of screwdrivers which cost mere RM10/- at hardware shop. [sly] So the past stories & theories of under table moneies being passing around from one to another in order to secure projects seem profound after all.
  14. Brudders, My current ride is a 2001 G9. My odometer is close to 70K and the last time I went BM was about a year ago. In between, I have been doing only normal servicing (Spark plugs, Oil filter, Engine Oil change & Air filter) and car is in pretty good shape. I was thinking of going to BM for them to do a thorough check (fanbelts, coolant, brakes, transmission oil, fuel filter, timing chain etc) to ensure everything is OK and also fix my creaking driver seat and vibrating the HU. But I heard it will cost a bomb and also BM service level has gone down. So my question is.... Are there any good reliable workshop that can do the same thing without waiting the whole day, don't con and is reasonably priced? TIA
