  1. Singapore becoming a 'garbage city', says ESM Goh Chok Tong Published on Jan 29, 2015 2:57 PM 1112 364 0 0 PRINT EMAIL The scene at Meadows by the Bay after 13,000 festival goers attended the Laneway music festival over the weekend. -- ST PHOTO: ALPHONSUS CHERN By Chew Hui Min SINGAPORE - On Wednesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called out festival goers for not picking up their litter, and asked Singaporeans to make Singapore a clean city rather than a "cleaned" one. A day later, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has taken to Facebook to do the same. Comparing Tokyo and Singapore, he said that the Japanese capital had no rubbish bins in public places, but it is still litter free. "Without foreign workers, Singapore is likely to become a 'garbage city'," Mr Goh said in the post. Last Saturday, Meadows by the Bay was covered with discarded plastic ponchos, cups and other garbage after 13,000 festival goers attended the Laneway music festival there. 2. If you have to spit, where do you usually spit at? The drain? The grass area? Or the basin in your house? Nah, not for this fella - He spits wherever he wants. Watch it here: What Happened? After parking his car at a multi-storey carpark located in Jurong West, a man strolls to the lift lobby to head down. He presses the lift button and randomly looks around before spotting a white car parked right in front of him. He then casually takes a big sip from his takeaway cup. The next thing you know, he spews his dark-coloured beverage onto the boot of the white car. Here's the aftermath of the nasty deed: If this isn't considered nasty, I don't know what else is. It sucks to have such inconsiderate and uncultured residents living around you. What would you do if this was your car? Let me know in the comments below! Netizens' Comments I would love to see him drink some paint! Reputation drop, now ego also drop. OOF. 3. Well my 10 year old car got the COE renewed so am thinking of replacing the fuel filter, not oil filter, not air filter. The fuel filter is in the fuel pump near the fuel tank. CnC quote 600 to replace both the fuel pump and filer as it comes together in as assembly, should I change it, it is pretty ex but the filter should be already dirty.
  4. Dont know if you would do what i just did. i cannot take it anymore. i just went to complain to the supervisor of a popular eatery that his male staff (server) who is keeping a long thumb nail had his nail soup into my bowl of bee hoon soup while holding to serve on my table. how could this be happened at all...
  5. last night a friend told me that his maid is stealing and the items she steal: 1. food 2. children food 3. maybe money cos the mobile phone stored value can increase overnight... *magic* 4. misc the maid got caught red-handed for stealing food somemore and she says she is hungry... the problem she eats 4 full meal (breakfast, lunch, tea-break dinner) everyday and now steal during early morning and night => 1 day eat 2 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 tea-break, 1 dinner and unknown times of supper.... i was like ... even pig also dun eat that much.... anyway has advice him to get rid of her asap... any bros and sisters got this type of experience. think maids nowadays are over-protected.
  6. I was in a cab chatting with the driver when he brought up the topic of customers playing dirty which is common these days. What they do is, they get the driver to drive them to their destination. Only upon arrival, they declare that they only got $X dollars (eg, $4) in their wallets. it is the take-it-or-leave-it attitude. the taxi drivers have no choice but to take it. Cos if they were to argue with the customer, the customer makes a complain, their rice bowl is threatened. if the driver makes a report to the police, it will be time wasted for making statements. and customers will never leave their particulars for the driver to make a valid report anyways. if the driver makes it difficult for the customer to leave the cab till they settle the payment, they may be accused of criminal detainment by the customers. I checked with my uncle who is also driving a cab and he confirmes that it is common now a days. he gets a few of these cases each week. and there is nothing he can do about it. have you heard of such stories? what would you do if you are the taxi driver in such a situation? Any taxi uncles or aunties to share their views?
  7. Got a friend asked me, as a driver, do i know a list of dangerous or "dirty" roads/junctions to avoid. Frankly speaking, i don't have such a list. Anyone of you have? My friend gave me a head start: - Pioneer road north towards NTU and PIE junction. The yellow box area is too huge, traffic light beaters can come out of no where. He stays near there and had saw many near misses before.
  8. Hi, was involved in an accident with bmw 523(his fault) on before christmas eve and brought vehicle down to Ch*ng Hoe workshop located at yishun industrial park A to get the repairs down. Managed to get it panel beat and respray on the same day which is on Christmas eve. Upon happily driving back vehicle home to put back all the stuff, found out that my rayban sunglasses was missing from the passenger compartment. Panel beating for the left/accident side a bit looks uneven with the right also. Luckily I took everything from the coins to cashcard out but due to carelessness, forgot about the sunglasses in the compartment. Just to forewarn future MCF bros, please dont forget to remove anything. You nv know how gian peng they are. Hope 2013 will be a better year!!!
  9. Caught this when i was bumming arnd. Even cloud can have such a notti sign.....
  10. I have a degree but have worked my way up from a junior staff to a senior one over many years. Listened and learned from my seniors when I was a noob and was humble when I was junior. Many young executives or managers I come across these days are pretty impatient, want BIG titles and fat salary but refuse to get their hands dirty. I don't think just talking is going to get things done. The other porblem is if those young fellows come in and don't start from the bottom, just give instructions without even knowing the real situation on the ground, how is that going to work out? I seriously think something is very wrong with today's education. That's my own experience (of course not all are like that), what do you folks think?
  11. As above...blackie can only be found in soup never see them being fried and bbq or roasted before

  16. Are we still regarded as a garden city? Why is it we have become like that? Is it because of foreigners or we ourselves have let it happen or have contributed to this sad state? One only has to take a good look at the areas around our HDB blocks early in the morning of all the rubbish being thrown around before the hardworking workers sweep it all away. Something to reflect upon... From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_684678.html Cleanliness on the decline I AM a Canadian who visited Singapore in 1995 for two weeks. It was the cleanest city I had ever been to. I came back a year later, and again was impressed by how immaculate the country was. I returned on June 2 this year to enjoy Singapore's famous food and the Great Singapore Sale, but was very disappointed. The cleanliness of the city is gone. I spent days walking and taking public transport to various parts of the city, and noticed an appalling amount of paper and plastic rubbish in the parks and on the streets. I asked those I met why there was a litter problem, and one common comment was that it was due to the people's attitude. Another common response was: 'It's the immigrants.' A garbage worker said the problem had become worse in the last five years. A young woman said: 'Singapore has a lot of problems. We have to worry about our money and how to make a living; the litter is not our problem.' I soon witnessed acts of littering and it infuriated me. A woman with her teenage son and daughter tossed a green plastic drink bag over a railing onto the grass. I yelled at her from down the street, but she just laughed. I saw a construction worker walking past a rubbish bin and placing a can on a wall a farther 10m away, before continuing on his way. It really upsets me to see the once-pristine Singapore turning into just another grubby, trash-laden metropolis. This litter problem is a blight on Singapore's reputation, and I hope Singaporeans will address this disrespect for their country. One way is for people to take all rubbish with them after leaving public places and place it in a trash bin, and not on the ground, a wall, a bench or in the park. Community groups can get together to clean up the streets in their neighbourhoods. The city can promote cleanliness through mass media campaigns. Keeping Singapore clean is the responsibility of everyone - citizens, immigrants and tourists. James Cruikshank

  18. I noticed that my HDB flat's lifts are often dirty because the cleaners apparently do not clean them frequently. I would have to 'feedback' to the town council before the cleaners clean the lifts. The last time I feedback was when puke stains were not promptly cleaned off. Anyway, I decided to embarked on a litlle experiment of mine to establish how often are the lifts cleaned. After documenting a stain on one of the lift walls for a period of 30 days, I concluded that the lifts are actually not cleaned at all! Instead of submitting photos, here's a little light hearted clip that I made. Hope the town council can get to see this. Enjoy!
  19. Came across a four-part article by the SDP exposing the dirty truth behind Singapore politic. Not going to argue whether the articles are true or fake, cause my opinion is that politic is all about playing dirty and scheming. How a party rise to power is not important but how much a party has done for the people after in power that is more important. Links to the articles. 20. "....Right now, low pay and difficult work conditions are common in nursing homes. Just ask Sri Lankan nursing aide M. Gunasekara, 38, who used to look after 33 residents single-handedly every night at a nursing home here. She changed diapers of all the patients at least once and turned them in their beds every two hours. She tube-fed a dozen patients. At dawn, she helped carry 10 of them to their bath. After 10 years in the field, she earned $510 a month - which is high considering some earn as little as $350 a month. Ms Gunasekara switched to become a domestic maid as soon as an opportunity arose, caring for one elderly man, for $600 a month...." (source: Straits Times) Really must salute these nursing home workers! (and shame on our country/society for not rewarding them better)
  21. I dont understand with this people http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...202-196153.html KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2, 2010 (AFP) - Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said he would call Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife as witnesses in his sodomy trial due to begin Tuesday, accusing them of conspiring against him. Anwar, who was sacked as deputy premier and jailed on similar charges a decade ago, criticised the case as "the machinations of the dirty, corrupt few" as he arrived at court accompanied by his wife and daughters. Anwar said he had evidence that his accuser, 24-year-old former aide Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, had met with Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor at their home shortly before he lodged a police report. "We want to subpoena Najib and Rosmah as witnesses because they were personally involved in the conspiracy and frame-up," he told reporters. "It is politically motivated," he said of the trial which he maintains is a plot to end his political career and neutralise the threat he poses to the Barisan Nasional coalition government. The court adjourned until 0630 GMT to allow defence lawyers to attempt to delay the trial while they pursue manoeuvres including a bid to obtain prosecution evidence such as medical reports and CCTV footage. "They should not proceed with the matter. Anwar should be allowed to exhaust all appeals," defence lawyer Sankara Nair told reporters. "Everything should be disposed of, to ensure a fair trial." Anwar's lawyers will now meet with Malaysia's chief justice to seek his support for another postponement in the trial, which was originally due to begin last July. As the hearing got underway, up to 300 opposition supporters marched into the High Court building and stood on the staircase in the main lobby, yelling their battlecry of "Reformasi" or "Reform." "We are here to demonstrate against the injustice that Anwar is facing, we will be here every day until this matter is resolved," said parliamentarian Tian Chua. The courtroom was packed to capacity, with reporters, legal observers, and diplomats from the US, Japan and European nations who are keeping a close watch on the proceedings. Human rights group Amnesty International has criticised as "dirty tricks" the charges against Anwar, who in his first trial was brought to court with a black eye after a vicious beating from the police chief. Saiful's father, Azlan Mohamad Lazim, said at the court that his son was present on Tuesday and "ready and prepared to testify in the case." He declined to comment on Anwar's allegations over the meeting with Najib, but the prime minister last year told a press conference that Saiful did call on him to allege he had been sodomised by Anwar. Anwar rallied the opposition to unprecedented gains in 2008 elections, seizing a third of parliamentary seats in the most potent challenge yet to the Barisan Nasional which has ruled for half a century. The charismatic 62-year-old, a married father of six, was a celebrated finance minister before being sacked in 1998 amid a policy row with then-premier Mahathir Mohamad during the Asian economic crisis. He was convicted of sodomy and corruption but after spending six years behind bars, the sexual misconduct charge was overturned and he was freed in 2004. The trial looms after a tumultuous few months in Malaysian politics, with the opposition beset by infighting and the government struggling to handle a religious row that has seen places of worship firebombed and vandalised. Najib has battled to defend Malaysia's image as a moderate Muslim-majority nation after a caning sentence against a young woman caught drinking beer and other cases that have raised fears the country is being "Islamised." The Anwar trial, which defence lawyers say could drag on for eight months, poses a major challenge for both sides on the political divide, and will be a high-profile test of Malaysia's much-criticised justice system.
  22. i know this has been discussed before but since the 7th month is coming, can anyone give a recap of some of the roads that we should take note of? 1)Lim Chu Kang Road (along the cementary)
  23. Some time ago, when I sent my car for servicing (and it was not those major servicing mileage or interval), I decided to get my mechanic to take a look at my throttle body. I had driven the car for about 9k mileage and before that, it was a major servicing done and the mechanic had cleaned the throttle body. To my surprise, my mechanic told me that my throttle body was very dirty. End up he has to clean my throttle body. 9k mileage was equivalent to approximately 4 months of my driving. I was using stock filter all the way at that time and the mechanic checked my air intake path and hose. There was no leakage. He diagnosed that this was possibly due to the dusty/dirty environment or road conditions which I have driven my car. To a certain extent, I agree as I am staying near the industrial estate in the North. I can see the 2 big giant joysticks with smoke emitting at the tip almost everyday. But that was not all. I drove anywhere and everywhere including highways, expressways, city driving though notably these days there are a lot more vans and lorries with more black exhaust fumes than ever. However, I find it hard to believe that after only 9k mileage, my throttle body is so dirty with using stock air filter. My filter is very black. Of course, the throttle body has not reached to the extent of making my idling erratic or engine stalled. I just cannot figure out why or the reason behind. Perhaps brothers here can enlighten me on any other possible causes. I am using 030 engine oil and platinum spark plugs for your information. Thanks!
