During a match between Bethlehem Vengthlang and Chanmari West on 14th October, player Peter Biaksangzuala celebrated his goal with few somersaults, after which his team-mates initially wanting to share his joy but quickly realised something was wrong. He had landed badly and suffered a serious spinal injury. ESPN report : Goal-line tech test at Wembley ZURICH -- FIFA says the Hawk-Eye goal-line technology system will be tested at Wembley Stadium when England plays Belgium in a June 2 exhibition. It's the final scheduled test of Hawk-Eye in a recognized match before FIFA's rules-making panel meets July 2 in Kiev. The panel, known as IFAB, is considering whether to approve the English camera-based system and the Danish project GoalRef for use. GoalRef, which uses magnetic sensors to track the ball's path, is being tested in Danish league matches. FIFA says test results are not available to match officials and will not influence the result. Nine is more than the number of subjects I took for my A-levels. Nine is the number to beat, the new "quota", the new symbol of intelligence and the new dream for generations to come until a brilliant mind sets a new record. There are students who find it challenging to get even one distinction, for which there are many reasons. These range from a difference in learning style to the unfortunate disadvantage of socio-economic capital, either from being unable to afford expensive tutors or not having a strong education background. The advantaged may even have access to "pre-pre-school" education. From this perspective, our education system, though flawless in its ability to churn out talents, contains inequalities that some brush off as excuses of the reluctant or the lazy. Yet, the beauty of our society is that in order to prove that the system is meritocratic and that everyone stands a chance, everyone plays by the rules. The socio-economic underdogs strive for excellence to be working-class heroes, the teachers encourage the difficult yet courageously eager, and parents enforce the ideology that distinctions equate to success. Schools provide concessions and awards to those who achieve and those who show improvement. We give consent to having our abilities judged by the major examinations, and we have therefore given consent to the system. There are people who are successful without topping the system or conforming to its rules. Yet, everyone believes or has no choice but to believe that by playing by the rules, they will get a better job, pay and future. There is no coercion, no robbing of rights, and the rewards are real and achievable. Nine As shows the strength of our national ideas; nine is our nation's pride and brilliance, the product of our system. Yet, nine is also what we have made our future students strive for, and for our next generation, the sky is that much higher to touch. The writer is a local undergraduate.

Once work is done, WP will present report to parliament and a copy to HUDC commitee. Duration to privatise is 2.5 years. A report of correspondence shows that every party is in the loop except Minister Lim Hwee Hua. She is paid 2.2M excluding bonus....................

Hawkers told to keep prices stable in March ... ... then receive letter from NEA about rental increase in April looks like things not very co-ordinated these days, sad ... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why this hawker can't afford to maintain prices 02:05 PM Apr 26, 2011 Letter from Edward Chan I read with interest that the Retail Price Watch Group (RPWG) enlisted more than 120 hawker stalls to pledge to maintain their prices for six months. Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Chairman of the RPWG, Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower and MP for East Coast GRC, was present to launch the initiative on March 20. The RPWG was "encouraged to see more businesses taking the initiative to help Singaporeans mitigate increases in prices." Despite the Ministry of Trade and Industry's efforts to maintain food prices at hawker centres, it is with regret and trepidation that I read about the high-handed stance that the National Environment Agency is taking toward hawkers. My retiree friend was notified by NEA that his stall at Old Airport Hawker Centre had been "assessed by professional valuers to be fair and reasonable" regarding his rental increase from S$1,110 to S$1,500 with effect from April 1, after taking into account "stall size, location and the prevailing economic conditions". This letter came in response to his appeal through Mr Lim Biow Chuan, MP for Marine Parade GRC. It leaves me saddened that agencies are taking initiatives counter to each other's. On the one hand, MTI wants to keep inflation low and prices stable. On the other hand, NEA is bent on keeping in line with "prevailing economic conditions". My friend is keen to maintain his prices but with a 36 per cent increase in rental, he will find it difficult not to pass this price increase to his customers. NEA's letter also states: "If you have difficulty maintaining your stall rent, you may consider assigning the stall to an eligible party or surrendering it to NEA." This is his livelihood as a retiree. So it's a take it or leave it approach? Such compassion, coming from the civil service. Taking off the jersey is a yellow card offence and slapping the flagpost is a no-no too. But what other goal celebrations will get penalized? I know the idea is not to get disrespectful but this is a gray area. I think FIFA should go easy on goal celebrations because the sommersaults, dancing and mass hugging orgies make WC more fun to watch.

The 2010 World Cup will kick off tonight in Johannesburg and it is apt to recollect our memories of Goal 2010. In 1998 then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, reminiscent of Kennedy's moon landing challenge in 1961, bravely set a target for the FAS to land 11 Singaporean men in the World Cup Finals before 2010 was out. As it turns out, the task was not easy, but far harder than landing a man on the moon and bringing him safely back. Perhaps the late late settlement of TV broadcasting rights was a conspiracy by someone high up to prevent Singaporeans from watching the World Cup and being reminded of the failed Goal 2010.

Interesting bit of news from Soccernet... =================================== BAGHDAD -- Police say an Iraqi soccer player has been shot dead just as he was about to kick what could have been the tying goal in a weekend game south of Baghdad. Police Maj. Muthanna Khalid says a striker from the Buhairat amateur team was facing only the goalie during a Sunday match in Hillah when a supporter of the rival Sinjar club shot him in the head in the final minute of play. Sinjar was leading 1-0 when the shooting occurred. Khalid said a spectator was arrested. More Iraqis are turning out for sports events now that security is improving. Major matches in Baghdad are heavily guarded but security in amateur games in smaller cities is often lax. ====================================== Sad news...however I must say that the shooter must be quite a marksman.

This stoopid driver dun undertand engrand....Quite clear, that the c/p would be only for season parking nia, ON MARCH 5 and 9, I received summonses for parking on a Season Parking Lot at Sengkang (SK61). The time printed on the summonses are 5.38pm and 5.35pm respectively. In both instances, I displayed valid coupons. I am shocked for a sign on this lots states: 'Reserved for season parking including Sundays and public holidays from 7pm to 7am.' I understand that the HDB has subcontracted this job to contractors - in this case, Sembcorp Environmental Management. I have the following questions. Are the workers properly trained? In this case, it seems not. One of the summonses bears this message: 'Parking without a valid Season Parking Ticket'. The other states: 'N/SP'. Seems like there is no standardisation. Both summonses did not indicate details of the displayed coupon which are important. Last but not least, I understand HDB has two categories of parking in red lots. One is reserved for residents 24 hours while the other is reserved from 7pm to 7am. This can be confusing to drivers, not to mention carpark wardens. Lim Kwee Kiang (Ms) quite clear it is for season parking nia....and I really dun understand her gripe I think she believe season parking oni 7pm to 7amshje neber see the word 'INCLUDING'
