  1. The sports coupe to succeed the 350Z from the Japanese automaker Nissan, the 370Z, was officially unveiled for the European market back in 2012, during the Paris Motor Show. However, the model has now made it into the spotlight, again, with Nissan announcing an imminent launch of a facelifted version of the 370Z in China. Like its predecessor, the Nissan 370Z facelift maintains its sporty look. In fact, it looks a bit sportier and more luxurious now with a new front bumper, revised front end, and also a pair of vertical LED daytime running lights, the latter being the trend in the present day automotive market. However, expect no increase or decrease when it comes to performance as Nissan will not make any alteration to the engine. That said, the Nissan 370Z maintains a 3.7-litre V6 engine capable of spitting out 324bhp of total power output. Thanks to this engine, the car is able to go from a complete standstill to a speed of 100km/h in no more than five and a half seconds. For the facelift, Nissan is offering two new colours - Midnight Blue and Magma Red. Personally, I would choose the Magma Red over other colours as I think the car looks stunningly wonderful in it. Of course, apart from the colours, you also get to choose whether you want to drive in a coupe or to feel the air blowing on your hair. For the coupe version of the Nissan 370Z facelift, you'll have to pay 608,000 Chinese yuan (S$121,000). As for the roadster version, you'll have to spend a total of 668,000 Chinese yuan (S$134,000). Of course, you can only get the car at those prices in China, at least for now.
  2. What you see in these pictures is the production version of the Chevrolet Cruze 5-door hatchback study, which was presented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The compact hatchback version of the Cruze has lost some of the cool features of the concept car such as the LED strips on the front bumper, the blue-tinted headlamps and the clear crystal tail lights. The rest remains unchanged. The new body style looks a bit sharper and sportier than the four-door saloon, but due to the shorter rear overhang, cargo capacity for the Cruze hatchback is reduced to 400 liters, which is some 50 liters less than the sedan. Chevrolet decided to build a five-door version of the Cruze to cater for the European market, as 65 percent of all compact cars sold in Europe are hatchbacks. The car is slated for a Singapore debut before the end of the year too. Locally, the car will compete with models such as the VW Golf and the soon-to-arrive all new Ford Focus. Personally, I feel that the new Focus has a much more adventurous styling than the Cruze hatchback. The Cruze 5-door will share its engine lineup with the four-door model, which means buyers can choose between 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter gasoline units producing 124HP and 141HP respectively.

    ZOE in Paris

Although ZOE sounds like COE, they are entirely different. One is a piece of paper while the other is an electric vehicle in the making. Following last year's ZOE Z.E. coupe, Renault took the opportunity at the Paris Show to show off the ZOE, which presents a more realistic look at the production version that will be available in 2012. Wearing Renault's newest face, it may also preview the next Clio as well. Similar in size to the Clio, this little electric automobile gets some high-end passenger comfort technology that may show up in the production model (Renault claims 90% of what you see here is what you'll get). To pamper the occupants, the ZOE has a humidity-regulating climate control system with an integrated toxicity sensor and scent diffuser. It also provides "light therapy", which is being co-developed with Philips. The concept seen here is 4.1 meters long and rides on 19-inch wheels. For production, dimensions are going to be similar, but expect those wheels to be replaced by smaller ones. Power comes from an 80-horsepower electric motor that makes 222 Nm of torque. A charge will take from 6 to 8 hours and can be done in two different ways: either with a wall box that you connect to your home's outlet, or by the optional EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment). Renault recommends the wall box method for the sake of convenience.
  4. Lotus surprised us by unveiling the 2015 Elise at the Paris Motor Show. Available as a coupe and roadster (the Exige name will apparently be dropped), the new Elise features shark-inspired styling, floating taillights, and a variety of carbon fiber components. Furthermore, thanks to a longer extruded aluminum chassis, entry and egress should be vastly improved. Power is provided by a supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which produces around 320 hp. Paired to a robotized manual transmission, the 1095 kg Elise should be a fairly zippy drive. Along with the new Elise, Lotus also showed us the Eterne (a four door coupe), new Esprit and Elan at the show. More photos of these gorgeous Elan Esprit Eterne

    Octavia goes green

This year's edition of the Paris show will see the VW Group's Skoda brand unveiling its first-ever electric-powered vehicle called the Octavia Green E Line. Skoda says it is planning to create a special test fleet of Octavias Green E Line in 2011 with the goal of obtaining additional information relevant to the further development of the electric drive. The concept model is based on the Octavia Combi and is powered by an electric motor delivering a constant power of 80-hp with a maximum output of 114-hp. Peak torque of 270Nm is available from the start. The pure-electric Octavia accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12 seconds, with a maximum limited speed of 135 km/h. Electricity for the drive motor is supplied by a 26.5 kWh battery made up of 180 lithium-ion cells. It weighs around 315 kg and is located in the middle to rear of the undercarriage, extending partly into the luggage compartment. Skoda claims the battery has little impact on the volume of the passenger and luggage compartments. At full capacity, the battery is said to offer a driving range of about 140 kilometers. The concept model at the Paris show will be finished in a Pearl-white exterior color and features a glossy black roof with integrated energy-generating photovoltaic panels.
  6. Jaguar has lifted the lid on the new Jaguar C-X75 concept supercar. The concept could become Jaguar's first mega performance vehicle since the cancellation of the XJ220 in 1994. When Jaguar introduces the supercar at the Paris Motorshow, they will drop a bombshell. The car will race to 300 km/h n 15.7 seconds, over a second faster than the Bugatti Veyron. However, where the Veyron continues on to 407 km/h, the C-X75 tops out at 330 km/h. The concept uses four 195-horsepower electric motors to launch the car from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, and to 161 km/h in 5.5 seconds. However, this is not an all-electric model. The car uses two small turbine engines capable of running on compressed natural gas, diesel, biofuel and LPG. The turbines make the car an extended range hybrid, and provide the car with the capability to travel further than its 68-mile battery-only distance. The car can actually travel an impressive 560 miles without stopping. This is thanks to lithium-ion batteries, and turbines which can allegedly spin up to 80,000 rpm. These UK-sourced turbines have never been used on a car before, according to the automaker. More information regarding the 4.6-meter long, 1350-kilogram Jaguar C-X75 concept will be available when it debuts in Paris.

    Smart escooter Revealed

Previewing a possible expansion to the world of two wheels in the very near future, Daimler's Smart division will showcase a scooter concept at the Paris motor show. The electrically driven 'escooter' uses a 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack placed behind the paneling in the foot area and is capable of traveling up to 100 kilometers on a single charge. The company says the batteries can be fully recharged through any standard household power socket within three to five hours. The charging socket is located at the front of the scooter underneath a hinged smart emblem. Smart's two-wheel study is driven by a disc-shaped wheel hub motor in the rear wheel, which offers an output of 4 kW (equal to 5.3-horsepower), allowing the scooter to reach a top speed of 45 km/h. Technical highlights include the use of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) specially adapted for a two-wheeler, an airbag integrated in the paneling under the handlebars, and Blind Spot Assist which draws the rider's attention to vehicles following close behind but are not visible in the blind spot of the rear-view mirrors. Another cool feature is the Smartphone that is placed in the centre of the handlebars. It replaces the traditional instrument panel and provides information on speed, range, battery charge level and even acts as a navigation system.
  8. Volvo has unveiled the S60 and V60 R-Designs ahead of the Paris Motor Show, in an effort to further enhance the appeal of these new models. The R-Designs have a revised grille, modified bumpers, an aggressive rear diffuser, and unique 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin features sport seats, aluminum pedals, and special floor mats. To improve handling, Volvo engineers installed a strut brace, shorter springs (which reduce ride height 15mm), and stiffer bushings (20% firmer than the standard model). On top of these, they also added monotube rear dampers and Corner Traction Control which uses torque vectoring to reduce understeer. The R-Design package can be combined with all available engines, ranging from the 115HP DRIVE 1.6-liter diesel unit to the range topping 3.0-liter turbocharged-six petrol with 304 horsepower.
  9. Shown here in pre-production form, the hottest member of the new Focus family (before Ford decides to present a successor to the RS), will go on sale in global markets from early 2012, following the introduction of the mainstream Focus models in Spring of 2011. The styling package includes a new front bumper with a 'gaping mouth' grille and additional air ducts, side skirts, a larger roof spoiler and a rear apron with air vents and central exhaust pipes. The show car is finished in a new color Ford calls 'Tangerine Scream' while the ST also gets a set of beefy 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/35 ZR 19 rubber. Inside, the Focus ST gets a pair of body-hugging bucket seats with contrasting orange seams and pads, a sportier-looking steering wheel with thicker rim, carbon fiber trim on the center console and revised instrument gauges. Under the bonnet, out goes the Volvo-sourced 225HP 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine, and in comes Ford's own 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder EcoBoost unit, which is rated at 250-horsepower. Ford did not reveal any other details on the car's specifications, but the interior picture shows a six-speed manual gearbox, which drives the ST's front wheels. The final production model will most likely be offered with the company's six-speed Powershift dual-clutch transmission also. At the Paris Motorshow, the ST will be joined by the regular Focus family members and the facelifted Mondeo.
  10. Alfa Romeo has announced plans to introduce an updated Giulietta at the Paris Motor Show. While the styling remains unchanged, the biggest addition is a twin-clutch transmission. Dubbed TCT, the gearbox promises driving comfort and sporty feeling well above those offered by conventional automatic transmissions. At the same time, it also offer improved efficiency and lower consumption levels. The TCT will be available on the 1.4-litre MultiAir and the new 2.0-litre JTDM. The new JTDM unit produces 138bhp and 350Nm of torque. Performance figures weren't released, but combined fuel consumption is 4.5L/100 km and C02 emissions are 119g/km. Perhaps, Singapore motorists would be more interested in the 1.4 petrol MultiAir unit. Combined with turbocharging technology, it produces 170bhp. The TCT equipped MultiAir Giulietta would certainly give some fierce competition to the VW Golf Sport.
  11. Fiat's Abarth division is expanding its range with the launch of the esseesse tuning kits for the new Abarth 500C and Abarth Punto Evo models at this month's Paris Auto Show. While Abarth is withholding most details on the "esseesse" packages that are designed improve the cars' performance, handling and styling, the Italian company did release info on the power upgrades. With this kit, the scorpion-branded 500 convertible's 1.4-liter turbocharged engine delivers 160HP and a peak torque of 230Nm, up from the standard car's 140HP and 206Nm. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h drops from 8.1 seconds to 7.5 seconds, while top speed increases from 205km/h to 209km/h. Output in the tuned Punto Evo "esseesse" is increased from 165HP and 250Nm to 180HP and 270Nm at 3000 rpm. As a result, the 0-100km/h sprint is reduced from 7.9 seconds to 7.5 seconds and top speed goes up to 216km/h . The 'essesse' package also includes a set of 17-inch alloys with 5 diamond shaped spokes against an anthracite background for the Abarth 500C, and 18-inch alloys in a special titanium-coloured design for the Abarth Punto Evo.
  12. Audi has listed the S1 as one of the cars it will reveal at this month's Paris Motor Show. While Ingolstadt has not yet confirmed any technical details on the hottest version of the A1 premium supermini, sources state that it will be powered by the same 1.4-liter TSI twincharged engine found under the hood of the Polo GTi. It is possible that Audi may tweak the four-cylinder unit to produce a few ponies than the 180HP it returns on the VW model. The S1 will also get the usual performance parts such as taller and wider tires, upgraded suspension and brake system as well as a styling package similar to the S-Line trim. The new hot hatch from Audi should go on sale in Europe sometime next year. For Singapore, the non-
  13. Finally, details and images of the upcoming Opel Astra GTC have broken cover. Technically labeled a concept, Opel has set its sight on the VW Scirocco and the upcoming Hyundai Veloster. The GTC will be a compact, 3-door hatch for five with a coupe-like roofline. It measures 4.46 meters long and incorporates modern Opel design cues. The GTC Paris gets LED running lights / tail lights and rides on 21-inch rims which probably won't be available on the production model. Opel design VP Mark Adams says, "We wanted to express the most emotional side of the Opel brand and we believe this vehicle creates an appropriate visual impact to reinforce our dynamic sporty character." Under the creased hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with direct injection hooked up to a 6-speed manual transmission and a start/stop system. The production model will be powered by a variety of petrol and diesel engines with the grapevine talking about a GTI-version of Opel's little hatch called the GSi with around 200-horsepower and an even crazier OPC model, possibly with as much as 280HP to battle the Scirocco R. Official specs for the GTC will probably start to come out around the time of its Paris debut.

    Ferrari goes green

According to source, Ferrari will introduce a environmental friendly California at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. Details are sketchy, but OmniAuto, an Italian automotive website, is reporting the car won't be a hybrid. Instead, it will likely feature an improved direct injection system, multi-cylinder deactivation, low friction engine components and regenerative braking like the Ferrari HY-KERS hybrid concept. While purists will cry foul over a "green" Ferrari, the company has already announced plans to cut emissions by 40% and improve fuel efficiency by 30% as compared to 2007 levels. This is a result of stricter government standards which have already killed off the Honda Civic Type R and Ford Focus ST.
  15. What you're looking at here is the first teaser sketch of Hyundai's foray into Europe's mini-MPV segment, the ix20, which will make its world premiere along with the facelifted i10 city car at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris on September 30th. Based on the underpinnings of the Kia Venga, the ix20 was designed and developed at Hyundai's European R&D centre in R
  16. The refreshed Renault Laguna lift-back and Sports Tourer debut at their home motor show in Paris at the end of the month. The facelift includes a redesign of the Laguna's fascia with new headlamps and a restyled bumper incorporating a more prominent grille. Under the hood, the Laguna will have its engine range extended with a new cleaner 1.5-liter dCi 110HP diesel engine that emits 120g/km of CO2. Renault's 4Control four-wheel steering system is now available on the dCi 130HP and dCi 150HP diesel engines. More details and photos will be released when the Laguna is unveiled on September 30th.
  17. Confirming the recent rumours that have been circulating on the internet, General Motors has released the first images and details of the 5-door Chevrolet Cruze hatchback. The show car will be officially unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show on the last day of September. Although billed as a show car, the production version should not have many changes to the exterior design. The model is described to feature a coupe-like roofline to enhance the overall sporty appearance and it is built on a new body-frame integral system (BFI) which results in greater stability and solidarity. Expect GM
  18. A Norwegian website claims to have snagged the first official photo of the 2011 Volkswagen Passat from one of the automaker's European retailers, and sources suggest that we could see the restyled mid-size sedan as early as the Paris Motor Show this October. There's still some question about what engines will be available when the new Passat arrives next year. Expect VW's ubiquitous turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four and 1.8 TSI units to reappear in the revised model. A new 300-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 will be available in higher-spec trims along with the normal assortment of diesel mills. A hybrid model has also been confirmed by VW. Soon after the sedan launches outside Europe, the wagon variant will debut along with a possible R36 model. Expect the full details to be revealed before the end of the month. One of my colleagues paid a visit to VW Singapore recently and I understand from him that VW is clearing the existing stocks of Passat.
  19. Full details of Peugeot 3008 Hybrid 4 has emerged as the car is heading to next month's Paris motor show in production form. This is the first hybrid production car from PSA, also the world's first diesel-electric hybrid. By mating the already very efficient 2000-bar common-rail injection turbo diesel engine with a small electric motor, Peugeot achieves a carbon footprint of just 99 grams per kilometre. This compares well with the most efficient hybrid and advanced diesel cars currently on offer. Considering that the 3008 is a pretty heavy crossover, its achievement is all the more impressive. The 2.0HDi engine in this car produces 163 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The electric drive is located at the rear end of the car. All the electric components, namely the motor, step-down gears, inverter and power electronics control module and NiMH battery pack are all located under the rear seat and boot floor, which is easy for the high-seating 3008 platform. The electric motor has a continuous output of 27hp and 74 lb-ft of torque. This diesel-electric combination should give some very decent performance. The diesel engine drives the front wheels through a 6-speed automated manual gearbox. The electric propulsion system is completely decoupled from the engine as it drives the rear wheels directly, so the car is a part-time 4WD. Drivers can select one of the four driving modes: Auto: computer decides the combination of engine and motor power to optimize fuel economy; Sport: sportier gearshift pattern optimizes performance; 4WD: engine and motor work in parallel to enhance traction; ZEV: zero emission vehicle mode, i.e. electric power only.
  20. Mazda has announced that the refreshed Mazda2 will be given its European premiere at next month's Paris motor show. The Japanese firm also plans to introduce a new 1.6-liter turbo diesel for the Mazda5 MPV, Mazda3 sedan and hatchback models at the show. The updated European specced Mazda2 benefits from a nose job with reprofiled bumper and face grille along with some minor interior upgrades. Other improvements include a tweaked chassis for better ride comfort and the introduction of a new automatic transmission variant with all engines in the Mazda2 lineup complying with the Euro 5 emissions standard. Mazda will also premiere a new 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine for the Mazda5 MPV and Mazda3 models. The new diesel produces 115HP and is matched to a six-speed manual transmission, returning a combined fuel economy of 5.2lt/100km on the Mazda5 and 4.4lt/100km on the Mazda3.
  21. While there has been no shortage of spy shots and videos showing the new Mercedes-Benz CLS sports sedan to date, that changed recently with the leakage of the car's official brochure that reveals the production-ready version of the new 2011 CLS inside and out, way ahead of its scheduled world premiere at the Paris Auto Show next month. The second iteration of the CLS combines the "banana shaped" body of the original model with styling cues from Mercedes' new design language. The car's interior is almost unchanged from the CLS Shooting Brake Concept. The new CLS is based on the new E-class mechanicals with which it will share similar powertrain options including a V6 turbo diesel, V6 and V8 petrol engines. The range will top out with an AMG variant sporting Stuttgart's all-new 5.5-liter bi-turbocharged V8 engine delivering around 540HP in standard form and about 570HP with the optional performance package.
  22. Peugeot has released official details of the all-new 508, an upmarket replacement for the 407 range. Marketing gurus from the French marque describe the 508 as being full of French chic, with an elegant and timeless exterior design. Materials used in the 508 are said to be of higher quality than its predecessor. It benefits from a larger boot and a general increase in interior space. The new e-HDi stop and start system offers a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 15%, according to Peugeot. The brand's Hybrid4 technology will become available after launch and will feature 200 bhp and an AWD system. Emissions are 99g/km in normal combined driving or 0g/km in full electric mode. Cutting C02 emissions is paramount to Peugeot's sales strategy, and the 508 is said to lower emissions while improving engine performance. Dynamics are also said to be up a notch and weight is kept to a minimum. Peugeot will start selling the 508 in sedan and wagon (SW) bodystyles from the beginning of 2011 following its public debut at the 2010 Paris International Motor Show in October. Europe will get a French-built model while China will market its own built-in-China version.
