  1. http://youtu.be/HynTQ-KOp64 Route from Sungai Koyan is east of Cameron Highlands. One of 4 routes into CH. Man was 61 year-old. I'm 30plus already find driving up CH tiring, can't imagine in a bike at that age. Very unfortunate. Condolences to the family.
  2. 欺山莫欺水。 Really gota be careful around waters, be it at swimming pool or at sea. Condolences to Mike Lie & RIP Irene Soon... From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...e_maldives.html Posted on 12 May 2013 S'porean woman drowns while snorkelling in the Maldives A 34-year-old Singaporean woman lost her life when she drowned in a snorkelling accident in the Maldives last Saturday (May 4). According to a report on The New Paper, insurance manager Irene Soon -- who was there on a five-day trip with her husband, Mr Mike Lie, to celebrate her recent promotion -- was snorkelling and opted to stay in the water to take more photos underwater. Mr Lie had gotten out of the water due to saltwater getting into his mask and nose. He then crossed over onto the shallow side of a pier that divided the lagoon, and stood there watching his wife. The 37-year-old financial planner's attention was then diverted for a while as he watched a group learning how to scuba dive for five minutes but when he turned back, he realised he had lost sight of her. Around that time, a German uncle and his nephew on the shore felt that something was wrong as Ms Soon's snorkelling tube was underwater, and swam out to check it out. Mr Lie then heard a commotion while making his way to the other side of the pier, and saw the nephew pulling his wife's body in. She was lying face down on the seabed, and her fingernails and toenails were purple. He tried calling out to her but she didn't respond. He also felt for her pulse, but got nothing. A medical examination by the police pronounced her dead from drowning. Her body was flown back to Singapore on Thursday morning (May 9). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson, said that it was aware of the case, and has rendered consular assistance to Ms Soon's next-of-kin.

  4. JB thief makes off with S'porean's Volkswagen Mr Lee shows how he was working on the battery while the thief entered his car. MALAYSIA - He drove to Malaysia, looking forward to an enjoyable fishing trip with his friends. But his plans fell through when someone stole his Volkswagen GTI right in front of his eyes outside a Johor Baru 7-Eleven convenience store. The car owner, Singaporean Lee Chee Peng, 41, and his two friends were following their usual routine. The contractor told The New Paper on Tuesday: "We go fishing there about once every two months." After eating, they would visit the nearby 7-Eleven convenience store to get refreshments for their trip. It was no exception this time. They parked their cars side by side facing the store at about 4.45am on Sunday. After buying their drinks and loading them into the icebox, they got ready to drive off. First sign of trouble It was then that Mr Lee realised he had trouble starting his car. He said: "I realised that the battery was flat. I was thinking, 'This is disastrous, my trip is over'. When he told his friend, Mr David Poh, 45, a fellow contractor, about his predicament, Mr Poh brought out jumper cables from his boot. ] The two men lifted their car bonnets and tried jump starting Mr Lee's car. Meanwhile, their other friend went to the toilet. As Mr Lee and Mr Poh were trying to get the Volkswagen's engine to start, Mr Lee noticed a Toyota Alphard driving into the empty parking lot to the right of his vehicle. He said: "There were two men inside. The driver looked to be in his 40s, and the passenger, in his 30s." Mr Lee didn't take much notice of them and continued cranking his car. After some minutes, the engine started. He got out of his car and closed the door without locking it, leaving the key in the ignition. He then removed the cables from the battery and passed them to Mr Poh, who headed back to his car to keep them. Said Mr Lee: "My bonnet was up, so it was obstructing my view. I had a shock when I closed it. Someone was in the front seat." He was staring into the eyes of the passenger from the Toyota. The man immediately looked down and clutched the gear shift. Said Mr Lee: "I didn't even hear him enter my vehicle. Those guys were pros." Instinctively, he shouted: "Hey, that's my car!" and ran towards the driver's door. But the man immediately drove off, nearly running over Mr Lee in the process. Mr Lee then got into Mr Poh's car and a high-speed car chase ensued. He said: "My friend was driving like crazy, he was really stretching the car. It was the most horrifying ride of my life." Said Mr Poh: "We were driving at more than 130kmh. It was like a scene straight out of a movie." The pair chased the man on a straight road, even beating many red lights in the process, but it was futile. The GTI proved too fast for Mr Poh's Honda Civic. Said Mr Lee: "Whatever I did to my car was working against me. "It was really a sinking feeling, watching your car pull away until you can't even see the tail lights." After about 10 minutes, Mr Lee and Mr Poh headed back to the 7-Eleven to meet their puzzled friend, who had missed the whole incident. Mr Lee then made a police report at Johor Baru Central before returning to Singapore and making another report at a neighbourhood police station. The New Paper could not contact the Malaysian police, but was shown a copy of the Malaysian police report. Besides losing his car, which cost more than $90,000, Mr Lee also lost his fishing equipment, which amounted to about $3,000. But he was grateful that he had not been hurt. He said: "I was stupid to dash in front of my car as the man wouldn't care if he injured me. I could have been knocked over by my own vehicle." He added that he didn't harbour high hopes of seeing his car again. He said: "How could I let them snatch it from right under my nose?" Mr Lee said the incident has put him off driving to Malaysia. "I'm never driving there again. I'll think really hard about ever visiting Malaysia again," he said. "It's just too dangerous." AsiaOne
  5. Yahoo report : Why Most Singaporeans Are in Debt By Aktive Learning | MoneyMatters.sg The current starting median pay for polytechnic graduates is $2,000, while for University graduates it is about $2,700. The median salary per month for Singaporeans in 2011 is $2,710. I really wonder how Singaporeans can stay out of debt if they continue to spend. An example of a typical Singaporean couple Take for example a Singaporean couple who falls in love and decide to settle down. The man is in his thirties and woman in her twenties. They have a combined income of about $8,000. The man buys a proposal ring that costs $7,000 (Larry's brand as girlfriend likes it). The couple also buy a pair of engagement rings that costs $6,000 (Cartier due to peer pressure). The wedding photo package costs $6,000, wedding dinner costs $7,000, honeymoon to Korea $3,000. They then decide to apply for a DBSS flat after countless tries with HDB's BTO without success and have to cough up $350,000 (by taking up an HDB loan and wiping out their CPF and savings). They then spend $20,000 on minor renovation and furniture. The man decides to upgrade his car as he could not resist the latest continental car design and coughs up $100,000 (by taking a car loan). The man likes to collect watches, saw the latest Rolex and could not resist it. He has no cash but buys it for $12,000 with an interest free 24 month installment since it is so cheap per month. Then the man tells himself that if he loses his job, he is finished. He is stuck in a rat race and saves on food, entertainment and transport cost. He does not drive his continental car to areas with ERP and instead takes the MRT there. The wife is in the finance industry, and with many banks doing cost cutting, she is very concerned now as she realizes she has nothing much to do during office hours. The above is a real life story. The only way the couple could afford all that is if they belong to the high earners group, if they have financial assistance from their parents or if they are born rich. Unfortunately, they are not. We have not even talked about Singaporeans with lower earnings. How Singaporeans get themselves in debt Most Singaporeans will be in debt if they do the following: 1) Earn less than what they spend 2) Have no savings 3) Lose their jobs 4) Stay in a company for too long without promotion and their company pay them pathetic bonuses 5) Spend on liabilities 6) Do not delay gratification 7) Marries somebody that likes Cartier or Larry's 8 ) Do not invest To avoid racking up debt and getting stuck in the rat race, don't do any of the above! For the first part, very true and still some elected ppl still don't believe and says some of the things are still affortable... Housing can easily make up 40% of the debt with a repayment period of 25 ~ 30 years and some $$$ have to set aside for insurance ......

"The vehicle was stolen at the front parking lot of a Pattaya Hotel after the rally event. "The man has denied that he was involved but the evidence showed otherwise. "The Singaporean and another man was seen on CCTV footage, driving the stolen vehicle into the condominium. "He was also seen making phone calls to his Thai wife to destroy documents pertaining to the stolen vehicle shortly before he was arrested. "However, police were able to go into his unit and recover the said documents in time. "The licence plates and security system in the vehicle were also changed to avoid detection. "Police believe that the gang of three intended for the vehicle to be sold in a foreign country."

  8. http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...igent_joke.html The 14-year-old teenager who drew flak from netizens for mocking Chinese New Year as a 'senseless' rehash of New Year's Day in a video says it was meant to be satirical and an 'intelligent joke'. The video was made by Zhonghua Secondary School student Amos Yee, who also stars in Jack Neo's latest movie, We Not Naughty. He had previously won Best Actor and Best Short Film in the FiRST Film Fest, organised by The New Paper. When contacted, Amos told My Paper that the video was meant to be satirical and was not meant to insult anyone. It was meant to be an intelligent joke, said the secondary two student. Amos also told The New Paper: "To all the haters, I am open to their criticism, I'm not a racist as some people have called me. I love feedback. I feel, humbly, that feedback is good. "The video is a joke executed well, but it attracted a lot of (unnecessary) hate. "Most of the people are commenting for the sake of commenting. They are also commenting from other people's comments. Have they seriously looked at the video from their own perspective? "I am Amos Yee. I don't care what people think. They can hate me for all they want. It shows that people are interested in me." Amos' mother also said her son's video clip was done in good fun. He had uploaded it with the intent of it being a 'comical greeting card'. She says Amos is a good boy in real life and enjoys all the traditions and customs of Chinese New Year and loves going visiting. Jack Neo also defended Amos, saying he is not to be blamed as generally, "most children these days have no idea of the origins of Chinese New Year." STOMPer FamousAmos who read the report shared her opinion: "First you insult until so jialat, then you come out and say it was a smart joke. "If you want to make smart jokes in your 'American accent' about your very own culture, then you can jolly well stop celebrating CNY and go elsewhere. "You are still quite young, but not too young to not understand the fundamentals of respect. Next time think properly before you speak." 17. Think twice before giving kopi $$ to the M'sia traffic cops... S'porean driver jailed and fined for bribing M'sian cop JOHOR BARU - A Singaporean businessman was fined RM15,000 (S$6,400) and sentenced to a day in jail by the Sessions Court here after he pleaded guilty to offering a bribe to a traffic policeman. Ong Peoy Kuan, 61, offered a RM100 (S$42) bribe to Kons Muhammad Hafiz Aziz near the Lima Kedai toll plaza at about 5pm on May 30 to not take action against him for exceeding the speed limit. Ong offered the bribe as Kons Muhammad Hafiz was about to issue a summons. The offence under Section 17 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 is punishable with up to 20 years' imprisonment or a fine of not less than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher. In mitigation, Ong's lawyer G.K. Sritharan said the accused was a first-time offender and was suffering from kidney disease as well as diabetes. "He has deeply regretted his actions and has fully repented," he said. "He has saved the court's time and expenses by admitting to the charge." DPP Abdul Ghafar Abdul Latiff argued for the maximum sentence to be imposed, saying that offering a bribe to a civil servant was a very serious offence. Ong paid the fine.

The man then shouted at her in Mandarin: "Don't come and look for me again. I have a wife and family." By Chong Shin Yen YOU'D think from his aggressive gongfu pose, with feet apart and clenched fists stylishly raised, that he was coming up against a martial arts expert. Or at least another man. But no, he was about to beat up a woman. The spark that escalated what began as a lover's quarrel to a full-blown fight: A damaged Mercedes Benz side-view mirror which the woman had kicked. Enraged by his broken mirror, the man got out of the car, towered over the petite woman and struck a threatening pose. But the woman seemed defiant. The man, with locks almost as long as his opponent, then challenged the woman to a fight. With a few kicks, the svelte woman crumbled to her knees, clutching her stomach in pain. But the 34-year-old Singaporean man did not stop. He went on to lock her arms, preventing her from retaliating. The woman,a 25-year-old Chinese national, screamed. That was when he gave her another flying kick, knocking her flat on her back. The incident unfolded yesterday at about 7am along Geylang Lorong 27. A witness took photographs of the entire episode, which lasted about 15 minutes. Witnesses who declined to be named said the couple started quarrelling next to the man's Mercedes Benz along the two-lane road. They are believed to be lovers. A witness told Lianhe Wanbao that the initial squabble escalated into a scuffle after the woman screamed at the man, calling him a "crazy pervert" in Mandarin. The woman, who works as a clerk, was crying as she picked up a durian husk lying by the roadside and flung it at the man, reported Wanbao. The man hopped into his car to avoid being hit. He then locked the door. The car was parked by the side of the road at that time. >> So angry So angry Said the witness: "The durian (husk) missed the man and the angry woman ran up to the black Mercedes Benz and started kicking the driver's door repeatedly. "He remained inside until the woman gave a hard kick and broke the car's side view mirror (on the driver's side)." This infuriated the man, who is self-employed, according to Wanbao. He got out of the car, challenged the woman to a fight and, before she could say anything, punched and kicked her at least five times. Said the witness: "The woman fell to her knees, clutching her stomach in pain. But the man did not let go. "He went up and locked her arms from behind, giving her no chance to retaliate. "The man looked like he knew gongfu, with his stance and kicks. As he was locking her arms, he shouted for passers-by to help him call the police." No one did. The area was not very busy at the time. The shops had not opened for business. The witness added: "It was only when the woman screamed '(It's) very painful, you are hurting my arms!' that he released his grip." The man then shouted at her in Mandarin: "Don't come and look for me again. I have a wife and family." The woman, who was reduced to tears, then yelled back hysterically: "Why were you avoiding me? You lied to me!" Then, for a moment, it seemed as if the couple had reached a truce. But as the man tried to leave, the woman went up to him and refused to let him go. That was the final straw for him. The man lifted up his right leg and gave her a flying kick. She fell backwards onto the ground, groaning in pain. The woman scolded him: "If you want to play with women, do it outside. Don't come and play with me." The witness said he then saw the man reaching for his mobile phone and making a call. It is believed he called the police. A police spokesman confirmed that they received a call at about 7.15am yesterday informing them of a dispute between two parties. They arrived at the scene shortly after. The witness said that after the police arrived, the woman was seen trying to leave the scene. But the police caught up with her and she was taken to Changi General Hospital by ambulance. The New Paper understands that she suffered bruises to her body and was treated as an outpatient. A police spokesman said the couple have been advised on their legal recourse. The case has been classified as voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which is a non-seizable offence. For such cases, the complainant has to lodge a complaint before a magistrate, who has the powers to direct further action. [email protected] This article was first published in The New Paper.
  20. A SINGAPOREAN beauty is asking her compatriots for a 10-cent donation each - and hopes to become a millionaire within a year, reported Sin Chew Daily. The 21-year-old woman known as Holly made her intention known through a self-recorded video clip posted on YouTube last week. In the clip, Holly said she was unemployed and did not wish to work either. She hoped Singaporeans would help realise her dream of becoming a millionaire by the time she turns 22. Holly even read out her bank account number in the clip. She, however, did not reveal how she will repay her donors' "kindness". Her action was widely condemned by online users. Some censured her for trying to "reap the fruits without sowing the seeds", while others suggested that she undergo a psychiatric check-up.

  22. Hey S'porean, would you do these jobs? Tue, Jan 26, 2010 The New Paper By Crystal Chan WHEN entrepreneur Adam Khoo wrote a blog entry titled "The Expats Will Rule Singapore", he did not expect the flurry of hate mail that followed. Mr Khoo, 35, co-founder and executive chairman of Adam Khoo Learning Technologies Group, had described how, when he advertised to hire a marketing executive, more than 60 per cent of applicants were foreigners. He wrote that some of the foreigners had master's degrees and were willing to work for less than $2,000 a month, compared to local fresh graduates who asked for at least $2,500. In Mr Khoo's blog post, he wrote: "They (foreigners) know that if they can come in and learn and work hard, they will eventually climb up and earn a lot more. "They are willing to invest in themselves, pay the price for future rewards. Sometimes I wonder how some of the locals are going to compete with this." The blog post, written on 16 Dec last year, spurred at least 20 netizens to post angry comments on his blog. One netizen wrote: "Adam, you're a local who hires cheap FTs (foreign talent) and then keeps the savings for yourself." Mr Khoo's blog post was also copied and flamed on forums like hardwarezone.com.sg andsgforums.com. "I meant that foreigners are less picky and more hardworking than locals... It doesn't mean that I prefer hiring foreigners to locals." - Entrepreneur Adam Khoo explaining what he meant in his blog post "The Expats Will Rule Singapore" But Mr Khoo explained, in an interview with The New Paper on Sunday, that his words were taken out of context. The father of two young girls said that he felt foreigners were less picky than locals, and he was worried about how his daughters and other young Singaporeans would be able to compete with them in future. He added that it didn't mean he preferred hiring foreigners. Mr Khoo said that his office here has about 90 staff and only three are foreigners. He said: "I'd still pay a local more than a foreigner if the local is able to generate more value for my company." Mr Khoo said that when Law Minister K Shanmugam said at a dialogue with Yew Tee residents last Sunday that foreign workers were not stealing jobs from Singaporeans, but were really doing jobs shunned by Singaporeans, it struck a chord with him. He said: "I understand this (foreign workers here) is a sensitive issue so some people are upset. It's no point getting angry because nothing will come out of it." While Mr Khoo has no difficulty hiring Singaporeans, employers in other sectors lament the reluctance of Singaporeans to take up certain jobs. Restaurateur Eldwin Chua feels bad about hiring foreigners as chefs and waiting staff. But the owner of the Paradise Group of restaurants claims he has no choice - his attempts to hire and retain Singaporean staff have mostly failed. The Paradise Group pays local waiting staff $1,500 to $1,600 a month, compared to $1,200 to $1,600 for foreigners, depending on their experience. Mr Chua said: "I offer higher salary to locals because I'm encouraging them to take up the jobs. "Singaporeans complain so much about Chinese nationals working as waiters and waitresses. "But do they know that when locals take up the jobs, many of them turn up for just two days before quitting, because they can't take the long hours of standing?" The Paradise Group has 200 waiters and waitresses in its eight restaurants, and 90 per cent are either permanent residents or foreigners from China and Malaysia. Last Monday, SBS Transit announced it would increase salaries of new bus captains to $1,375 a month, up from the current $1,196, in an attempt to recruit more Singaporeans. Together with other allowances, they can earn more than $1,900 a month in their first year of employment. SBS Transit has 5,500 bus captains, of which only 38 per cent are Singaporeans. Its executive director, Mr Gan Juay Kiat said: "Over the years, we've seen fewer and fewer Singaporeans join us as bus captains." Many Singaporeans also do not wish to work as cleaners, seeing it as a "dirty" job, said Mr Steven Kunasegaran, owner of L & J Maintenance. How much to wash toilets? Mr Kunasegaran, who has been in business for 16 years, said: "I advertise for cleaners in the papers but when Singaporean applicants call up, they ask about the salary and whether they need to wash the toilets. "Of course toilets have to be cleaned. And when I say so, they never contact me again." The Employment & Employability Institute (e2i), the National Trades Union Congress' one-stop job-matching and training centre, echoed the employers' sentiments. Its spokesman said jobs that have few Singaporean takers are cleaners, low-end manufacturing production operators, low-end retail assistants and food & beverage service staff. She said: "Based on today's labour market situation, any job which pays $800 to $900 a month, requires workers to perform shift and weekend duties, and travel to far corners of Singapore will have a low take-up, if at all. "This is simply because they no longer reflect the market and workers have better alternatives."
  23. After I parked by the side (ensuring no inconvenience to anyone), I was helping my maid uploading groceries into my car. A man came foward & confronted me - questioning me if I have scolded him a madman. I was shock! He said his son overheard I scolded him a madman. I said' whos your son?' Then he shouted across to his son if I was the one. A boy, >10yrs old came & pointed at me. I was "huh!!!???" Then the man's wife came & started scolding me for being rude. For God's sake, she was actually carrying a baby in her arms! With his wife, I was thinking of ignoring him. PS!!! - I had never seen them at all!!!! Ignoring him was impossible! He began to put his face towards mine as if he wanted a fight. I asked what he wanted; he kept shouting at me for scolding him, challenging me if I dare to touch him & instructed his wife to call police. At this stage, my wife came down from my car & both women exchanged words. I quietened my maid & wife to aside & asked the man : "what you want, if its a fight - are you ready now?" I raised both my hands up & I pointed my nose to his. A few seconds - then he told his wife that he dun wanna continue with this low life, disgraceful people (referring to me) & walked back to his car. Before he got in, he shouted "KNN!!!". I immediately moved forward to ask him to stay for the fight. He droved off. I continued loading the groceries with my maid....... My maid told me that car was actually blocking the lorries from loading/unloading previously. The workers were unhappy and 1 guy was actually signalling to fren such a mad driver blocking their way....... So WTF! This bloody man was wrong in the 1st place. Then confronted just b'cos his son (<10yrs old) mistaken me for that worker. Worst, so what even if I was the one who made the gesture (not even any impoliteness or vulgarities), and that was not made in front of him - does it warrant for a confrontation??!!! I'd at least reflect myself 1st before jumping to any rash acts. Btw, I'd be self-defence getting physicals cos' the man confronted me with hostility and the intention for harm!. He was lucky that I'm with my family!!!" I regretted NOT insisting fighting with him, simply b'cos his son will grow up to be a bully, cos his father will confront anyone his son pointed at - right or wrong! What I have witnessed today: - a man failed as a father, so was his wife as a mother - a young lad nourished by his parents to be a bully - an unrepentful b------d who was wrong yet trying to push his way I have never in the past 20 years, felt its worth a real fist fight is necessary until today. If it happens that you are the man and reading this - "we are both middle-aged, matured men & fathers, but what you did today . . . . I sincerely welcome you for the fight you asked for. Damn!!!
