  1. looks like 9 years late and maybe hundred of thousands of Singaporean has being affected. Now a change to help the Singaporean. I wonder what has become of us when it takes such a lengthy amount of time to react. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/mom-to-update-government-framework-that-deters-employers-from-discriminating-against SINGAPORE - The Government rules that ensure that employers do not discriminate against Singaporean workers by hiring foreigners will be updated this year. Minister for Manpower Josephine Teo announced plans to update the Fair Consideration Framework in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Jan 1). "Expect stronger deterrence for discrimination against Singaporeans when hiring, but also stronger support for employers who are committed to giving our people a fair chance," she said, without giving details of the review. In her Facebook post, Ms Teo spelt out the Manpower Ministry's key milestones in 2019, such as adopting a 10-year road map to raise retirement and re-employment ages. She also noted that workplace fatalities have declined consistently since 2015 and sustained a record low rate of 1.2 per 100,000 workers for the past two consecutive years. The Fair Consideration Framework was introduced in August 2014 on the back of a slowdown in the inflow of foreign workers after Singaporeans voiced unhappiness about them taking away good-paying professional, managerial and executive (PME) jobs from locals. Under the rules then, companies with more than 25 employees must advertise professional, managerial and executive posts that pay less than $12,000 a month. The advertisements need to run for at least 14 days before the firms can apply to the Ministry of Manpower for an Employment Pass (EP) for a foreigner. The framework was last updated in July 2018 to cover firms with more than 10 employees and jobs that pay less than $15,000 a month. Under the framework, firms found to be favouring foreigners in hiring are placed on an MOM watchlist and their applications for EPs are scrutinised more closely. Since 2016, the ministry has placed about 600 firms on the watchlist. A total of 2,300 EP applications have been rejected or withheld by MOM, or withdrawn by employers. Some 260 firms were taken off the watchlist after their hiring practices improved. 4. http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2016/05/premium-plunge-sales-many-popular-luxury-cars-america-nosediving/ "Yet after BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Acura, and Cadillac all failed to match the rate of industry-wide expansion in 2015, the first four months of 2016 have revealed that even more top-level premium brands are fading as the market for new vehicles continues to expand. U.S. auto sales are up 3.4 percent in 2016. Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, BMW (the three top-ranked premium auto brands), Acura, Cadillac, and Infiniti posted declining sales in the first-third of 2016." Is this a symptom of the ongoing recession, or a trend of changing taste?
  5. TOKYO—Christmas is coming, so it’s time to reserve fried chicken and cake in Japan. Consumption of those two foods has so firmly come to mark the informal holiday here—Dec. 25 isn’t an official day off—that few Japanese are aware other countries prefer somewhat different Christmas cuisine. “I had no idea,” said 22-year-old university student Ryuya Morimoto, informed that chicken and cake aren’t American yuletide staples. “When I was a little kid, we would eat chicken as a family,” he said, “and then have Christmas cake, with a little chocolate piece on the top that said, ‘Merry Christmas.’ ” Families like his make this the busiest time of the year for Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets in Japan. KFC lets customers reserve fried chicken as early as October’s end. Those who try buying buckets on Christmas Eve risk having to stand in line up to six hours under the watchful eye of a Santa-suited Colonel Sanders. Japan’s Christmas-chicken tradition dates to the early 1970s, when a non-Japanese customer came into a Tokyo KFC store one day to buy fried chicken as a turkey substitute, according to the chain. KFC, still struggling at the time to win Japanese over to eating greasy food with their fingers, hatched the idea for a new Christmas tradition. It was a hit among families, and a lasting ritual was born. “Christmas is boring without Kentucky,” said 18-year-old high-school student Yuna Nakajima, using the name by which KFC is popularly known in Japan. Ms. Nakajima has already reserved her chicken this year, planning to enjoy the traditional meal on Christmas Eve. A spokeswoman for KFC Holdings Japan Ltd. said December’s sales every year are double regular monthly sales. The publicly traded company operates under a franchise agreement with a subsidiary ofYum Brands Inc. For the first time this year, KFC Japan is letting customers reserve online at many of its stores, after a trial last year. Customers can pick up their Christmas baskets from Dec. 19 through Dec. 25. Recently, some of the nation’s ubiquitous convenience stores have been crowing that they offer a better deal.FamilyMart Co.’s “premium chicken” basket starts at around $20. The chain, with more than 11,000 stores in Japan, says in its advertising: “If there isn’t fried chicken, it isn’t Christmas.” By contrast, turkeys and pigs are under no particular stress at this time of year in Japan, as the American and European custom of eating those meats at Christmas is hardly known. Student Ms. Nakajima gasped when she heard that turkey was among America’s yuletide preferences. “Christmas and chicken are one,” she said. The KFC in Japan is the real deal! Please go try it when you're there
  6. Hmmmm.............. Gulfstream ..... RSAF ? Yahoo : Lee Hsien Loong’s arrival for APEC Summit makes waves in the Philippines Filipinos on social media took notice when Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong chose to use a less extravagant plane for his trip to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. Unlike other world leaders who arrived on jumbo jet flag carriers or their own presidential airplanes like President Barack Obama’s Air Force One, Prime Minister Lee stood out when he used a small and nondescript private Gulfstream jet. A Facebook post on his arrival made by Philippine media outlet ABS-CBN News has garnered more than 20,000 likes, 600 shares and 350 comments so far, with many Filipinos chiming in with their thoughts on PM Lee and his chosen mode of travel. One of the top ranked commenters, with over 170 likes and 63 replies, posted, “It’s a less extravagant plane. But he’s the highest paid leader in the world. Obama’s pay is embarrassing compared to his.” Another added, “Singapore is right around the corner. Other countries are miles away so of course they have to use a jet.” One commenter wrote, “If he’d taken a more sophisticated plane to NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport), somebody might steal it.” Another wrote, “A chicken rice meal costs $3 and they have condominium units. That’s how it is in Singapore and there’s no corruption. I salute Prime Minister Lee, if Philippine government officials were like him, the country will prosper.” One commenter wrote, “I salute you Mr. Prime Minister. Though Singapore is only 3.5 hours flight to Manila, the Lee's are known to be humble leaders in Singapore. Most of the politicians and prominent personalities there are humble ones. You can even see an actor or an actress doing groceries in the supermarket alone, pushing the trolley and carrying the bags full of groceries. But in the Philippines, ordinary actors and actresses are idolized like gods.” After his arrival, PM Lee updated his Facebook page with an aerial photo of Manila’s business district, taken by him during his flight, along with thoughts on the summit and thanks towards Philippines for the warm welcome. On the APEC Summit, he wrote, “This year, we'll be discussing how to integrate our economies in the Asia-Pacific region. We will also be looking at helping MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) compete regionally and globally, and building sustainable and resilient communities.” His post has more than 14,000 likes, 800 shares and 400 comments, and has earned an outpouring of support from both Philippines and Singapore alike. The top comment, below Lee Hsien Loong’s own, wrote, “Thanks to all Filipinos for the kind welcome of our PM. Salamat po!” One Filipino wrote, “Thank you for visiting us. Hope you can impart your knowledge in building a nation to our leaders. I am very impressed when I went to SG and I hope one day Philippines will also achieve what you achieved.” The APEC Summit consists of 21 member economies from throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The Summit seeks to promote free trade throughout the region and is being hosted by the Philippines this year. 10. I used to think that location and freehold are some of the more impt factors that increase the value of a condo. But now after seeing such high prices for some 99 year old condos in OCR makes me wonder what makes a condo valuable. Furthermore these condos are not exactly very near MRT. Could it be age? New condos always more expensive than older ones (even 2 year old). Like cars? What estates in OCR are expensive? I certainly wouldnt want to stay in areas like Eunos, Geylang or Bedok.

QFT: 'Why It Makes Sense To Buy Gold' Good article by fund mgr (managing USD150M); article prob written for India audience, but facts about money printing aka Quantitative Easing (QE) initiated by the US FED remain relevant to the citizens of EVERY OTHER export dependent economy- competing to print $$$ (see 'currency war') to keep currency exchange 'stable'/ 'competitive'- e.g. Euro, China, Japan and even Switzerland etc etc will result in escalating price inflation internationally, which would make physical gold an attractive hedge against inflation secondary to money printing (aka QE). 15. Just now on my way home. Balestier road kind of jam. I want to filter into the right lane from another junction, as later I need to turn into Whampoa market at the junction. But the right lane already jam until I am not able to filter in, so I was at the center lane. I am sure some might think I jump queue but I stay there leh :( Later reach near traffic light and it's red light. All car stop and I am lucky I am infront of the yellow box. I wave to the van driver I want filter in and he wave at me say "OK" so I turn in slowly . As green light, I filtered into the right lane until He can see me, I wave thank you to him follow by my back wiper. Like dog happy wave it's tail lol Then the van also wave his wiper once at me. Somehow It's feels good and makes me very happy. There are good people out on the road also. It's just that we need to practice it. The van by letting me filter in, it's just a few second thing. I don't have to hog the center lane waiting to filter into right lane. It smooth out the traffic. Even it's just a small thing, I appreciate the van driver's courtesy and also hope more brother here can put down their "ego" and make the road a good driving experience. Thank you "Mr Van" (^_______^)

  17. JB thief makes off with S'porean's Volkswagen Mr Lee shows how he was working on the battery while the thief entered his car. MALAYSIA - He drove to Malaysia, looking forward to an enjoyable fishing trip with his friends. But his plans fell through when someone stole his Volkswagen GTI right in front of his eyes outside a Johor Baru 7-Eleven convenience store. The car owner, Singaporean Lee Chee Peng, 41, and his two friends were following their usual routine. The contractor told The New Paper on Tuesday: "We go fishing there about once every two months." After eating, they would visit the nearby 7-Eleven convenience store to get refreshments for their trip. It was no exception this time. They parked their cars side by side facing the store at about 4.45am on Sunday. After buying their drinks and loading them into the icebox, they got ready to drive off. First sign of trouble It was then that Mr Lee realised he had trouble starting his car. He said: "I realised that the battery was flat. I was thinking, 'This is disastrous, my trip is over'. When he told his friend, Mr David Poh, 45, a fellow contractor, about his predicament, Mr Poh brought out jumper cables from his boot. ] The two men lifted their car bonnets and tried jump starting Mr Lee's car. Meanwhile, their other friend went to the toilet. As Mr Lee and Mr Poh were trying to get the Volkswagen's engine to start, Mr Lee noticed a Toyota Alphard driving into the empty parking lot to the right of his vehicle. He said: "There were two men inside. The driver looked to be in his 40s, and the passenger, in his 30s." Mr Lee didn't take much notice of them and continued cranking his car. After some minutes, the engine started. He got out of his car and closed the door without locking it, leaving the key in the ignition. He then removed the cables from the battery and passed them to Mr Poh, who headed back to his car to keep them. Said Mr Lee: "My bonnet was up, so it was obstructing my view. I had a shock when I closed it. Someone was in the front seat." He was staring into the eyes of the passenger from the Toyota. The man immediately looked down and clutched the gear shift. Said Mr Lee: "I didn't even hear him enter my vehicle. Those guys were pros." Instinctively, he shouted: "Hey, that's my car!" and ran towards the driver's door. But the man immediately drove off, nearly running over Mr Lee in the process. Mr Lee then got into Mr Poh's car and a high-speed car chase ensued. He said: "My friend was driving like crazy, he was really stretching the car. It was the most horrifying ride of my life." Said Mr Poh: "We were driving at more than 130kmh. It was like a scene straight out of a movie." The pair chased the man on a straight road, even beating many red lights in the process, but it was futile. The GTI proved too fast for Mr Poh's Honda Civic. Said Mr Lee: "Whatever I did to my car was working against me. "It was really a sinking feeling, watching your car pull away until you can't even see the tail lights." After about 10 minutes, Mr Lee and Mr Poh headed back to the 7-Eleven to meet their puzzled friend, who had missed the whole incident. Mr Lee then made a police report at Johor Baru Central before returning to Singapore and making another report at a neighbourhood police station. The New Paper could not contact the Malaysian police, but was shown a copy of the Malaysian police report. Besides losing his car, which cost more than $90,000, Mr Lee also lost his fishing equipment, which amounted to about $3,000. But he was grateful that he had not been hurt. He said: "I was stupid to dash in front of my car as the man wouldn't care if he injured me. I could have been knocked over by my own vehicle." He added that he didn't harbour high hopes of seeing his car again. He said: "How could I let them snatch it from right under my nose?" Mr Lee said the incident has put him off driving to Malaysia. "I'm never driving there again. I'll think really hard about ever visiting Malaysia again," he said. "It's just too dangerous." AsiaOne
  18. Wondering how many of you buys a car of your wife's choice while you are fully paying for it? Notice that there are quite a fair number of men out there who is led by the nose. Buy new car wife choose options, wife choose colour, model, etc...but she is not paying. When new car is delivered, she wants to ride on it first and the man can't take his mother out for first ride. 21. Did this before, but thought we'd revisit it again, to focus our KPIs and going forward to the new year For me, started out learning stuff abt cars and made some great friends here. As time progressed, it turned out to be a cyber playground to share, chit chat as well as to share ideas! Made more friends and the old ones still remain! With a near life incident during my spate here, I have realised that life is indeed short and that one should treasure his/her time wisely Well, for the good and the bad here, MCF is here to stay, and looking forward to MORE GOOD YEARS IN MCF! (sorry, jus had to put that in)
  22. The new BMW 1 Series as instrument, the BMW plant Regensburg as stage - this is the first music (industrial) film of the BMW Group. A collaboration of the BMW Group, Jonas Imbery (Gomma Records), Mirko Borsche (Bureau mirko borsche) and The Brainstormclub. The soundtrack was exclusively generated out of the noises of the new BMW 1 Series. "check my machine" is a film project which has been created in a close collaboration between the BMW Group's Electronic Media Department and creative Munich artists Jonas Imbery (Gomma Records) and Mirko Borsche (Bureau mirko borsche). The Brainstormclub and Eyetrip are responsible for production. The soundtrack, composed by Jonas Imbery, could also be played in the world's most popular clubs. "The appeal of the work was to develop a viable, independent, recognisable composition that only makes use of vehicle sounds, such as the blinkers, GPS voice, closing noises, seat belts, doors, safety alarm, to name but a few. The visual resolution at the end shows clearly that the percussive elements such as the bass synthesizer, the vocals and the melodies were produced by the vehicle itself." 24. Vitantonio Liuzzi will step aside in order for Narain Karthikeyan to race at his home grand prix in India next weekend, the HRT team have confirmed. The Indian driver will line-up alongside Daniel Ricciardo for the inaugural event, which may come as a surprise to the Australian who earlier admitted it would more than lilkely be him that would be replaced. Team principal, Colin Kolles, thanked Liuzzi for his 'professional approach and attitude' toward the line-up change. "For this single event, Narain will be driving alongside Daniel Ricciardo," confirmed Kolles. "I have asked Tonio Liuzzi to step aside for the Indian GP in order to allow driving programs with Ricciardo and Karthikeyan to be completed. "I have to thank Tonio for his professional approach and attitude. After the positive performance the team had in Korea, I hope that we will keep on that line in India. Although Narain has already driven around the track and given us a positive feedback, we really don't know what to expect but we are looking forward to it." http://thef1times.com/news/display/04788 relatively decent formula 1 driver....
