  2. Amoebas devour girl's cornea after contact lenses stay in for 6 months File photo depicting a case of Acanthamoeba Keratitis. Acanthamoeba keratitis, first recognized in 1973, is a rare, vision threatening, parasitic infection seen most often in contact lens wearers. Thursday, Jul 03, 2014The China Post/Asia News Network By Lin-Yi Shen TAIPEI, Taiwan - A college girl was found to have had both the corneas of her eyes devoured by amoeba after wearing disposable contact lenses for over half a year without taking them out. The girl bought a pair of disposable contact lenses that were supposed to be used for one month and wore them for more than six months, even while she was sleeping. After feeling acute pain in her eyes, she went to hospital and was diagnosed with acanthamoeba keratitis, which is caused by a protozoon called an amoeba. The infection was brought on by dirty water that she used to clean her face, doctors said. Acanthamoeba keratitis, commonly referred to as amoeba keratitis, usually afflicts contact lens wearers or people whose eyes come into contact with dirty water. Director of ophthalmology at Wan Fang Hospital Wu Jian-liang indicated that contact lens wearers are a high-risk group that can easily be exposed to eye diseases. A shortage of oxygen can destroy the surface of the epithelial tissue, creating wounds in the eyes and cultivating an environment suitable for amoebas to survive. Wu said that the college girl did not follow the correct procedure in maintaining the hygiene of her contact lenses and her overuse of the lenses gradually damaged her corneas. After half a year of wearing them, her corneas were devoured by amoeba and shrank to half their normal size. Unfortunately, polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) or chlorhexidine, which are considered to be effective medicines in eliminating such amoebas, haven't yet been introduced to Taiwan, said Wu. Director of ophthalmology at Tri-Service General Hospital Lu Da-wen warned that no matter whether they are soft or hard, contact lenses should not directly come into contact with water, as this will increase their chances of becoming infected by other viruses and protozoon. Lu also stated that cases of acanthamoeba keratitis usually increase markedly during summer, and people should therefore pay more attention to proper hygiene at this time. - See more at: http://yourhealth.asiaone.com/content/amoebas-devour-girls-cornea-after-contact-lenses-stay-6-months#sthash.90qOvv55.dpuf

  6. Posted this earlier but seems like there is a failure in posting it. This video is warning all drivers not to use their phones while driving. Although Volkswagen is aggressive in their advertising and marketing, nonetheless, this is still a good educational video.

  8. Two suspected peddlers leaving a store selling contraband cigarettes in Geylang. Both have since been arrested. It is not just police and Customs officers who are on the lookout for cigarette smugglers. Tobacco companies here have also been hiring more private investigators to help tackle a problem which eats into their business. "It is in our interest as a company to understand how cigarettes are being smuggled into and distributed in Singapore," said Mr Ann Hee Kyet, corporate affairs manager of the biggest tobacco company here, Philip Morris Singapore, which distributes brands such as Marlboro and Next. Representatives of the other two major tobacco companies - JT International Tobacco Services and British American Tobacco - made the same point to The Sunday Times. That is where private investigators like John (not his real name), who has been working for tobacco companies over the last decade, come in. Last September, he got a tip-off that a smuggling ring was using a taxi to transport contraband cigarettes here. 11. Hi guys, My eyes are now very sensitive to lights. During the day time, even by looking out into the open space makes my eyes hurt. It also takes longer for my eyes to recover from looking at bright scenes. I've seen the eyes specialist at KTP Hospital to make sure my retinas are OK. The doctors dilated my pupils, scan through every corner of the retinas and found nothing wrong.... Any advice? It's so annoying now that I'm thinking of just making a new glass with compatible sunglass clipons.
  12. this is happening to me of lately..anyone experienced this??

  14. More motorists are installing cameras in their vehicles to act as their 'witnesses' in case of disputes or accidents. Retailers said sales are being driven by the ready availability of such cameras and by more product awareness after videos were posted online. The devices, which cost about $300 each and yield up to 20 hours of evidence, are used by motorists to record anything and everything - from reckless behaviour by other motorists to vandalism in carparks. Such evidence has helped motorists prove their innocence in squabbles and speed up the settlement of insurance claims. Mr Gary Chia, product manager of Wow! Gadgets, said: 'More people are aware of such cameras because others are putting such videos up on Facebook and Stomp. Others see these videos and think they may also need it, and follow suit.' 19. Not counting the accident when my frens and I were in the car which overturned, this one is quite 'slow-motion':- I was driving in UK's 4-lane highway about 10am few years ago, clear sky and traffic was quite ok and drivers there do drive properly and seldom change lanes..... My rental Focus was doing 100kmh (speed limit there i think) when i saw a Camry (quite rare in UK) merging from the slip road... at the same time there was this container truck doing about 90kmh in lane 4, I was in lance two, the Camry was merging from the slip road into lane 4..... suddenly, at about 100m ahead of me, the Carmy and the container truck collided..... the Camry was hit quite badly and spun 360deg x 2 in front of the truck..... under the clear sky and bright sunlight, i saw shinny sparks of chromed pieces / broken glasses flying around and my car was still moving toward the two vehicles which were now 'dancing' in lanes 4,3,2..... but the funny things was everything seemed to moved / flew in slow motions..... the shinny pieces were like fire-work dancing slowly in the sky......... by the time my car passed these two.... the Camry spun into the filed next to the highway and driver and passengers seemed ok......
