  1. http://www.straitstimes.com/world/scientists-find-rich-and-poor-are-biologically-different Scientists find rich and poor are 'biologically different' A Cambodian woman offers money to beggars in Phnom Penh.PHOTO: AFP PUBLISHEDDEC 26, 2015, 4:16 AM SGT Hormones that are out-of-balance in poor and uneducated people may explain why they age faster and are more vulnerable to disease than their more affluent peers, a new study suggests. It has long been known that less affluent folk die earlier and are "biologically older" than the rich, with those in the most affluent areas expected to live around eight years longer than those in the poorest regions, according to a report in Britain's Daily Telegraph. Now, researchers at University College London (UCL) may have worked out why. After monitoring a cohort of 1,880 British men and women since 1946, they have discovered that hormones critical to healthy ageing are significantly out of balance in poorer people by the time they reach 60-64. Men with the lowest household income - defined by less than £6,000 (S$12,000) a year - had 10 per cent lower testosterone than men earning £30,000 a year or higher, reported the Telegraph. Low testosterone has been linked to weight gain, loss of muscle, osteoporosis and depression. In contrast, women whose parents were unskilled workers had testosterone levels 15 per cent higher than the daughters of professionals. In women, too much testosterone is linked to early puberty, infertility and polycystic ovaries. Those with the lowest education in both sexes also had depleted levels of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) which has been linked to poor cognitive function and an increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular mortality. Women with no qualifications had 16 per less IGF than women who had degrees. For men the difference was 8 per cent less IGF, the Telegraph reported. Low levels of cortisol, which can lead to heart palpitations, depression, pain and insomnia, was also seen in both men and women with the lowest education. Professor Diana Kuh, of the Medical Research Council’s Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing at UCL said the hormonal differences showed how societal factors literally "get under the skin" and affect health. “We found that socioeconomic disadvantage across life, based on father’s social class and on the study member’s education, social class and income, was associated with an adverse hormone profile," she said, according to the Telegraph. “These hormones are thought to work together to ensure healthy development and also have many different roles in regulating health in older age. “So our findings suggest that these socioeconomic differences in hormone systems may play a role in explaining social inequalities in health as we age. “Hormones may be affected by exposure across life to stress and adverse events, health problems and obesity, and unhealthy lifestyles such as physical inactivity, poor diet, and smoking.” It is already known that socio-economic status has a major impact on health, with studies showing that being poor is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular, respiratory, rheumatic and psychiatric diseases, low birth weight and infant mortality. Scientists believe psychological stresses of having a less secure future, being bossed around and having lower self-esteem and less access to social support networks cause an increased rate of molecular damage, said the Telegraph. Living in an area of high crime is also thought to accelerate ageing. Dr David Bann, of the Institute of Education at UCL said: “Our study shows that people from a disadvantaged background are biologically different which could explain health inequalities. “These hormone levels change with age, so it could potentially explain difference rates of ageing.” But if the damage is being driven by an out-of-kilter hormone system, it may be possible to fix the disparities through better education and raising the standard of living. Prof Di added: “We are examining the impact of these hormone differences in explaining inequalities in physical and mental functioning in older age. “We are also looking at whether socioeconomic differences in other biological systems could help explain social inequalities in how fast we age. “Our findings provide further evidence of the potentially harmful effects of social disadvantage on health, suggesting that reducing inequalities could have powerful benefits in improving the health of the population and reducing health-care expenditure.” The research, which was based on data from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development was published in the journal Social Science and Medicine, the Telegraph said.
  2. Bought a used car and the last owner only change the front 2 tires 3000 km ago, Yokohama ES501. Mileage 42k now, thought of bringing the 2 ES501 behind and change the stock rear tires to others like Hankook k415. Is it weird to have 2 different types of tires? Another option is to get another 2 ES501. I'm looking for a quiet tire, is k415 as quiet as the ES501?
  3. Hi, Just to share that there are 2 version of 3M Clay Bar in the market, those who have used before the 3M Clay Bar will know that it should come in a block and colour of the clay bar is lighter blue (Left - Photo below). I happen to get the darker blue version from one of the seller and it does not pick up any dirts at all, it really looks like counterfeit version. Any brothers here encounter before?

  5. http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...mber_plate.html 2 different cars spotted with exactly the same number plate How is it possible that two different cars have exactly the same number plate, a STOMPer asks after spotting these vehicles parked side-by-side in her condominium carpark. This should not be possible both legally and logically, she says. The sender says: "This morning, I saw two different make cars bearing the same number plates parked in my estate. "Logically there shouldn't be two cars with exactly matching number plates. "They were parked inside our condominium's surface carpark lots so they should not be residents in our estate". ---------------------- Pending transfer of licence plates?
  6. Why are there 2 different look of E250? The earlier model before current. One with pertruding merc logo on the bonnet, the other without.
  7. Hi all, I've noticed that different petrol (similiar grade) caused the fuel guage to have different fuel consumption pattern. For example, 1) Shell 95; fuel level dropped fastest between 1/2 and 1/4 mark. Earlier from Full to 1/2 mark the drop is rather slowly. 2) Mobil 95; fuel level dropped fastest between 3/4 and 1/2 mark. Later the drop will be more gradual and evenly. 3) SPC 95; the level drop fastest around 1/2 mark, the rest rather constantly. 4) Caltex...have not tried it yet. Although I've experienced different fuel consumption pattern as witness from the fuel guage, but overall fuel consumption among the various brand is almost the same, minimal difference. Meaning; a full tank of Shell, or Mobil or SPC will given me around the same mileage travelled until the fuel guage empty light comes on. This difference in fuel consumption pattern (as observed from fuel guage) is repeatable, meaning its not a one time observation, whenever I use that particular brand the pattern appear again. Also travelling distance, timing and route is same, but its just that different petrol brand caused the fuel guage to give different reading (or different consumption rate?). Its not about the fuel tank profile/shape either, otherwise different brand will still give the same FC pattern, right? I've check with one of my colleague, and he had observed the same findings... So, just curious, have you noticed any difference in your fuel guage consumption reading when using different brand?
  8. Hi, anyone knows or experience having installed with different tyre/tires compound on the car even though tires of the same brand? Recently I went back to the same tyre shop that I have patronized for last 3 years but this round, I got bad experience as the tyre were installed with different compound. (Initially all MO and rear tyres need to replaced. It was replaced with 1 N2 and 1 AM8 by KH tyre shop!! at ubi) less than 2weeks, I realised the drive was different esp. on corner and wet floor (these few days raining). I started making inquiry and read a lot online and I understand that its important not to have mix component. I went back to the tyre shop and damn unscrupulous owner gave lots of excuse. **shall elaborate the excuses given by the scheming tyre shop owner** sucks, bulls**t excuses I was told if any accident with root cause related to the tyre will have the insurance void as the tyres were not meant to be mixed! apart from this important factor. All bro, can tell me what to do?? any advice and action that I can take?
  9. Hi guys I am currently using tyres 225/65/R18 and is planning to change the front two tyres soon. I called up one of those workshop and was recommended to change the front two tyres to 235/60/R18 instead. That would also mean a difference of $60 for two tyres. My question is whether is this recommended? Will it hurt the car in anyway? Thank you.
  10. Ex-addict: CNB officer pressured me into having sex Waitress alleges she didn't resist advances for fear of problems with her urine sample By Khushwant Singh IN COURT: Phua Jun Yang, 25, is accused of showing leniency in his supervision of the woman's urine tests in exchange for sexual favours. -- ST PHOTO: WONG KWAI CHOW A RECOVERING drug addict said in court yesterday that she was pressured into having sex with a police sergeant who worked at the centre where she went for urine tests. The 23-year-old waitress said Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officer Phua Jun Yang courted her after they met at the Ang Mo Kio police station last year. 'I did not resist his advances because he was a CNB officer and I was a drug addict,' she said yesterday during the opening day of Phua's trial in a district court. 'I was afraid that if I did not do what he wanted, my urine samples may have problems.' The 25-year-old Phua is facing allegations that he showed leniency in his supervision of the woman's urine tests in return for sexual favours. Phua is also accused of contravening the Official Secrets Act (OSA) on Jan 4 last year. Prosecutors say he gave the woman inside information about the activities of a drug dealer. The pair met on Jan 3 last year, the woman testified yesterday. She was fresh from serving a year at a drug rehabilitation centre for ketamine consumption and had to report for thrice-weekly urine tests to ensure she remained drug-free. Phua, then attached to the CNB, was manning a computer at the station. After her urine test, he met the woman outside and asked for her cellphone number. Phua then sent her text messages asking if he could be her boyfriend. The woman described him as fierce and said she did not want to offend him. Two days after their first meeting, Phua took her to his Hougang flat for sex, she said. They later took his dog for a walk before having dinner at a foodcourt. The woman started crying when Phua's lawyer Vinit Chhabra asked why she did not tell Phua that she felt pressured into the relationship. Phua treated her with respect and concern as if she were his girlfriend, Mr Chhabra said. Phua told The Straits Times that he was suspended from the police force without pay last year. For corruption, he could be jailed for up to five years and fined up to $100,000. For an OSA offence, he could be jailed for up to two years and fined up to $2,000. A charge of obtaining sexual favours from another woman, also under drug supervision, and another charge of violating the OSA were stood down. So were three disciplinary charges of getting the cellphone numbers of three other women under drug supervision. The charges that were stood down can be brought against Phua later at the discretion of the Attorney-General's Chambers. The trial is expected to last six days. 12. Wanna check with the experts.. Currently driving a company rented 2006 vios.. Brought the car back to the car rental company as back tyre sidewall got cracks and leaking air. Checked by a tyre shop and proceeded to change to 2 recon tires for the back. Problem now, Before that, all 4 tires were Falken 185/55R16. After, front 2 Falken 185/55R16, back 2 Nexen 205/50R16. When i asked the tire shop, they told me it is ok. Most BMW are doing the same. I have never ever heard of this before. Won't different tire profile and size for the front and back affect the car stability? Need advise from the experts
  13. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/woman-gives-birth-new-baby-5665572 A new mum has given birth to twins who have two different fathers. The incredible case was revealed after the woman, identified only as T.M., named her current boyfriend as the father of her twins. But T.M. admitted before maternity papers were signed that she had actually slept with a different man a week after she believed she conceived with her boyfriend. A paternity test was carried out and it was revealed that the two men had each fathered one of the twins, who are now toddlers. It seems medically impossible, but a woman can give birth to twins with two fathers when she has sex with two different men in the same week. In a process known as heteropaternal superfecundation, the rare incident occurs when a woman releases two eggs during her menstrual cycle and different men fertilise one egg each. It is a more common occurrence when the same dad fertilises two eggs during separate incidences of sex.

  18. To start off, as a benchmark, I am driving a 2008 1.8L civic. I have test driven a few cars and noted very different feels when it comes to the steering. To me, one of the main dislike when i test drive the Estima and Teana is how light the steering feels. It seems that from stationery or low speed, i need to turn the steering a lot before the car starts to turn. And faster speeds, it seems to be more 'responsive', thus the feel of the steering response being kind of inconsistent. The steering feel on my civic is different. The car seems to respond much better to slight turns on the steering. The latest camry is also fine. Is it that the implementation of the steering on the civic and camry is very different from that of the estima and teana. Can anyone shed some light (or some sort of technical explanation) on the different feel of the steering. I will however have to say that the test drives on the estima, teana and camry are for a short distance only.
  19. hi there ! Just discovered that the front/rear left tyres of my 2002 Renault Classic are nearly botak on the side. But the right set is still quite good. Current set is Continental EcoContact while i'm thinking of getting 2 new BridgeStone GR80. appreciate if anyone know of good lobangs for the wheels too. Thanks !
  20. Since there is a thread on low birth rate, i propose its only right people remaining single or not wanting kids have a look at this documentary. I chance upon this youtube doc recently and would like to share it in MCF. Its purely educational and for general knowledge and i find this very meaningfull. It tells me out-right that having a family is what matters in life. Nobody deserves to go off alone this way. It basically show when a single people without any family nor relative whom have pass-on, how the state puts him/her to rest accordingly to the state law. At least thats how they do it in the US. It really brightens me up when i go home and see my OC & kids and knowing in due time, i wont be going off alone and lonely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErooOhzE268&feature=youtube_gdata_player

  22. Ho say liao! Now then do >Drive a bigger car? You may need a new licence</h1> 15Share 4 inShare</span> Purchase this articlDrivers may soon need a different licence to get behind the wheel of a bigger, more powerful car. -- ST PHOTO: LIM WUI LIANGBy Bryna SimDrivers may soon need a different licence to get behind the wheel of a bigger, more powerful car. The proposed changes, which may be modelled after the system for motorcyclists, whereby riders chalk up experience on smaller bikes before moving on to bigger ones, are believed to be part of a wider review on driving licences. While it is too early to tell how the changes may affect drivers, one industry body backing such changes said on Monday that it was 'a timely move' as the issue of motorists' behaviour has been a hot topic since a fatal accident involving a Ferrari and ComfortDelGro taxi on May12. A police spokesman confirmed on Monday that a review on driving licences was ongoing but was 'unable to share more details at this stage'.
