  1. Fisker officially unveils its new EMotion all-electric vehicle with 400-mile range https://electrek.co/2018/01/09/fisker-new-emotion-all-electric-vehicle-400-mile-range/ After months of teasing, so much so that we had actually seen pretty much the entire vehicle and we have been aware of its main specs, Fisker officially launched its new EMotion all-electric vehicle at CES in Las Vegas last night. Henrik Fisker, chairman and CEO of Fisker Inc., commented on the launch: “We are truly entering a new era in the way the world thinks about vehicles, the way EVs are charged and the way personal consumer electronics are powered – with Fisker Inc. now clearly at the forefront of that revolution through our worldwide launches at CES. With the EMotion, we’re introducing edgy, dramatic and emotionally-charged design/proportions – complemented with technological innovation that moves us into the future. That design balance is what has made the Fisker brand emotionally connect with our consumers.” As previously reported, Fisker claims a range of ‘over 400 miles of range’, ‘9-minute charging’, and a $130,000 price tag. We already had a pretty good look at the exterior of the Emotion with previous teasers, but the official launch gives our best look yet at the interior of the vehicle: Fisker listed some interior comfort and convenience features in the EMotion: Interior: Defining the Future of Luxury Ultra-Soft Premium Leather Interior Color: Caramel and Midnight Black (Fisker was the first automotive brand to offer a vegan interior as an option – and will do so again with the EMotion) Three Driver-Oriented Screens, With Center Curved Screen Inductive Charging Ports and Special Holders For Four Smartphones (Partially visible) Carbon Fiber Center Console with Additional Storage Space for Tablets and Accessories Four Individual, Electric Adjustable First-Class Seats Optional 27″ Curved Rear Screen For “Chauffeur Edition” Five Seats, Rear Bench Option Individual Four Zone Electric Adjustable Tinted Roof: Electrochromic Glass in Collaboration with Lipik Fisker previously said that his new startup plans to bring the vehicle to market in low volume in 2019, but he didn’t elaborate on the plans at the launch this week. Instead, he said that the EMotion “will be produced in the United States at a location to be announced during the second half of 2018.” With the official unveiling of the vehicle, Fisker also showcased its new solid-state battery, which he claimed achieved a ‘breakthrough’ earlier this year to enable electric cars with ‘500 miles range and 1 min charging’. He commented: “We’ve also made the seemingly impossible, possible with our scientists spearheading the breakthrough in Flexible Solid-State battery technology – which is the next generation in charging everything from your personal cell phone to enabling mass adoption of electric vehicles due to unprecedented ranges and lighting fast charge times. We’re incredibly excited to showcase working solid-state batteries and the vehicle, in-person, on such a massive global stage. Fisker Inc. is about breaking barriers, leading in automotive technologies and ultimately creating the most desirable, functional futuristic electric vehicles.” When announcing the new battery earlier this year, Fisker said that they anticipated automotive production grade to be ready around 2023, but they have now aggressively updated this timeline to 2020 and they even claim that personal electronics/cell phone battery production could arrive “earlier – and possibly in 2018.”

  3. This photo taken on Thursday, Oct 10, 2013, shows Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor demonstrating its pre-collision system which uses automatic steering in addition to automatic braking to prevent collisions, in Tokyo. Toyota on Friday, Oct 11, 2013, unveiled the next generation of cars featuring an auto pilot system that will swerve to avoid collisions and also keep to the middle of the road, all without drivers touching the wheel. Toyota on Friday unveiled the next generation of cars featuring an auto pilot system that will swerve to avoid collisions and also keep to the middle of the road, all without drivers touching the wheel. The Japanese giant autos using the self-driving technology could be available on the market in just a few years' time. "These advanced driving support technologies prevent human errors, reduce driving stress and help drivers avert accidents, which has a big potential to reduce the number of traffic deaths," Toyota managing director Moritaka Yoshida said at a presentation in Tokyo. Leading automakers and technology firms, including Toyota, rival Nissan and Internet giant Google, have been working on self-driving and assisted-driving technology for years. Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, said that while drivers would still need to be alert and take part in the driving process, it essentially lets them put the vehicle on auto-pilot, leaving most of the work to the computer system. The Automated Highway Driving Assist (AHDA) system lets vehicles communicate wirelessly to avoid running into each other while keeping the car in the middle of the road lane -- no matter how many twists and turns lie ahead. "Cars with these technologies recognise the accelerating or slowing speed of those ahead, which also helps avoid traffic jams," said project manager Mitsuhisa Shida. "They can wirelessly exchange data once every 0.1 seconds." The company plans to install AHDA in its commercial models over the next few years. Toyota has already introduced the pre-collision braking assist system in its Lexus luxury sedan and plans to install it in other models by 2015, with the other technologies to follow. Many cars already have systems that gives drivers a panoramic view to keep watch for nearby objects while parking itself. The latest collision-avoidance system has doubled the detection time of oncoming objects to four seconds from a previous two seconds, Toyota added. The automaker said such advances would be especially helpful for older people. Japan's society is rapidly ageing with over-65s already making up around a quarter of the 128 million-strong population. 4. TOKYO - TOYOTA Motor Corp unveiled Tuesday a new hybrid luxury sedan, the 'Sai', aiming to keep its pole position in environmentally friendly vehicles. The new vehicle, which will go on sale only in Japan from December 7, is a compact sedan with a 2.4-litre engine and fuel economy of 23 kilometres per litre, against 38 kpl for the third-generation Prius. It is the second Toyota-brand vehicle that is available only as a hybrid, after the Prius. 'If it does not carry a hybrid engine, a sedan of this size would require twice as much fuel,' said Shigeru Nakagawa, Toyota's project manager, adding that: 'When people driving a luxury car want to be more environmentally friendly, they may want a slightly more upscale vehicle than the Prius.' The Sai will have a price tag starting from 3.38 million yen (S$52,000), against 2.05 million yen for the Prius, the company said as it aims to sell some 3,000 Sai vehicles a month. The world's largest automaker is a pioneer in hybrids, which run on a combination of petrol and electricity and are in strong demand because of worries about global warming. -- AFP ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hmmm, looks like Toyota did not do any market research in Singapore for their new hybrid before naming the car. Don't think local Chinese will associate a Sai car with luxury.....

  6. BT Report Professor Lim Chong Yah, who rattled many economists and businesses with his wage shock therapy in April, on Thursday addressed the two extremes in Singapore's salary and wage system in his "Shock Therapy II". In his latest paper presented at the Singapore Economic Policy Forum 2012, Professor Lim said the National Wages Council (NWC) should continue with the issuance of quantitative wage increase guideline for those earning less than S$1,000-S$1,500 a month for the next two years. He reiterated his suggestion for NWC to call for an across-the-board temporary three year moratorium on salaries of the very top executives both in the private and public sectors. Professor Lim added that should the wages of the lowest paid resident workers remain stubbornly very low in two or three years' time, serious consideration should be made to introduce a compulsory minimum wage scheme with, say, S$1,000 a month as the start-off quantum. In April, Professor Lim created a stir with his proposed wage reforms which included a wage freeze for top earners while raising incomes for the poorest by huge quantums - 15 per cent in each of the first two years and 20 per cent in the last year. The proposals reignited debates over Singapore's widening income gap. Shortly after, in May, the NWC recommended that the pay of workers earning below S$1,000 a month be raised by at least S$50 a month. An small excerpt of his paper-- The Two Extremes My remedial proposal had two parts. One aimed at lessening the number and percentage of workers at the lowest end of the income ladder. Two advocated a three-year pause to the ever increasing rate of escalation of income of the highest income group. Media reports on the salaries of some top executives in Singapore can range from $2.5 million a year to $5.5 million a year, or roughly $208,000 to $458,000 per month. In one instance, I recall 4 top family-related directors of a publicly listed company paid themselves between $2 million and $3 million each, when the company did not see it fit to pay a single cent dividend to its shareholders. When a very brave shareholder at the AGM asked the Chairman of the Board of Directors for an explanation of this dichotomy, he replied to the effect,
  7. Japan's best-known toilet maker on Wednesday unveiled a "poop-powered" motorcycle that can travel as far as 300km on a tank filled with animal waste. Billed as the world's first waste-powered vehicle, the three-wheeler has a toilet in place of a regular seat and huge paper roll at the back. But as a young female model climbed aboard for a test drive Wednesday, toilet giant TOTO was quick to point out that she would not supply the "gas". "The biogas it uses as fuel is not made from human waste. It's made from livestock waste and sewage," Kenji Fujita, a company spokesman, told reporters in a Tokyo suburb. 11. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/afp/20100128/ttc-...ne-0de2eff.html SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Apple chief executive Steve Jobs on Wednesday revealed the culture-changing company's latest must-have device, a touchscreen tablet computer annointed the "iPad." "We want to kick off 2010 by introducing a truly magical and revolutionary product," said Jobs, who underwent a liver transplant last year and was making just his second public appearance since September. The long-awaited iPad has a 9.7-inch (24.6-centimeter) color screen and resembles an oversized iPhone. It is 0.5 inches (1.3 cms) thick, weighs 1.5 pounds (0.7 kgs) and comes with 16, 32, or 64 gigabytes of flash memory. The cheapest iPad model, with Wi-Fi connectivity and 16GB of memory, is 499 dollars while the most expensive -- which includes 3G connectivity and 64GB of memory -- costs 829 dollars. "I think it's a home run," said Gartner analyst Van Baker. "It becomes a viable alternative to a netbook and I get the 140,000 applications in the App Store. It is a pretty compelling value." Apple said it would start shipping the iPad, which has a virtual keyboard but can also be hooked up to an external keyboard, within 60 days, making them available worldwide in late March. The 3G version will reach the market in late April. Dressed in his trademark blue jeans, black turtleneck and sneakers, Jobs appeared on stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater to unveil a product that had been the subject of months of speculation. Walking around the stage or sitting on a couch, he showed off iPad features which include browsing the Internet, doing email, working with spreadsheets and charts, playing videogames, listening to music or watching video. Jobs, who appeared thin but healthy, said Apple was launching an online "iBookstore" for the iPad and touted its abilities as an electronic reader of books, newspapers and magazines. "You can have black-and-white, color, video in your books -- whatever the author wants," he said. "We think the iPad is going to make a terrific e-book reader, not just for popular books but for textbooks as well. "Amazon has done a great job of pioneering this functionality with the Kindle," Jobs said. "We are going to stand on their shoulders." The legendary Apple CEO said the iPad has support from five of the biggest publishers in the world and that Apple will "open the floodgates for the rest of the publishers starting this afternoon." Some technology analysts expect the iPad to pose a challenge to other e-readers while a number of publishers are counting on the device to sell digital versions of their publications. The New York Times, Time magazine and National Geographic were among the partners whose content was displayed on the device on Wednesday. Apple said that besides serving as an e-reader, the iPad runs all of the applications available through the Apple App Store for the iPod and iPhone. "If you are thinking about buying a Kindle, you are probably reconsidering that decision. If you are a developer, you have one more reason to develop applications for Apple," said Interpret analyst Michael Gartenberg. Apple simultaneiously released a kit for software developers to tailor applications for the iPad. Jobs said he expected the device to carve out a place between the laptop computer and the smartphone. "Do we have what it takes to establish a third category of products in between a laptop and a smartphone?" he asked. "We think we've done it." Related article: Apple's cult tech inventions Jobs said the iPad is "so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smartphone." He said it has about 10 hours of battery life. "I can take a flight from San Francisco to Tokyo and watch video the whole way on one charge," Jobs said. "In general it was a hit," said analyst Rob Enderle of Silicon Valley's Enderle Group, although he expressed some doubt about the inadequate wireless network of telecom carrier AT&T. "I think this is disruptive for a lot of markets," Enderle said. "I have a hard time believing after seeing this that folks are going to want an e-reader that just does plain text and doesn't do format or color," he said. Enderle believed iPads could "do some severe damage" to the gaming market, initially to hand-held gaming systems then eventually to videogame consoles. "I think the iPad is going to do well for them," said NPD Group analyst Ross Rubin. "I wouldn't want to be a competitor in this space at this point in time." Apple shares closed 0.99 percent higher at 207.98 dollars. cool! But what a name... like Apple is selling sanitary pads.... does it comes with wings? LOL
  12. New Hyundai i10 conversion range released Aimed at budget conscious world and religious leaders Given the current economic downturn and a trend towards more eco-friendly vehicles, Hyundai sees this as the perfect time to expand this ever growing product lineup into the rapidly growing political and faith leadership transportation sector. In order to grab a firm stranglehold on this ever important market, the company has created a new conversion package for the stylish and frugal i10. Built by the Hyundai's skilled craftsmen, the new range of specially converted i10's feature a unique rear compartment that has a raised roof which enables VIPs to be driven around in comfort regardless if they prefer to sit or stand. Considering that some world leaders could potentially be blamed for failing to rectify the economy, Hyundai decided to outfit the new model with a special lightweight composite dubbed Armor Protected Roof Integrated Lining. With power being provided by a new 1.2-liter Kappa engine, fast getaways aren't exactly an i10 forte so in addition to the aforementioned APRIL body armor, the i10 also comes equipped with fully organic Weave Bean armor which is constructed of the "string" part of string beans. Weighing virtually nothing, the new armor is both stronger and lighter than traditional Kevlar. According to a confidential source at the company, the first i10 conversion will go to a German customer who currently resides in Italy. Although he failed to specifically name the client, he did inform us that the specific model being prepared for this lucky VIP will feature unique tapestry woven by monks from the Indian city of Utta Bullacs. As with all Hyundai's, the new i10 conversion comes with an extensive five year warranty that is fully transferable to new owners after general elections and military coups. Kia Aero Soul Kia Unveils Dramatic Wind-Assisted Aero-Soul How cool is this? Photos and details of the long-rumored Kia Aero-Soul concept have finally been revealed. The Korean automaker unveiled the wind-assisted version of the Soul, with sales to begin next month. The vehicle uses a low-cost system that can mount to any products in Kia's line-up. Available with new cars and retroactively, the Air Propulsion and Retardation Installation Line uses sensors to detect wind speed as the Soul is driving down the highway. Once wind speed is at a strong enough rate, panels built into the bumpers are deployed to harness the wind power to assist in speeding up the car. This system does not just work when the car is running at speed. When braking or decelerating the panels also pop out like drag chutes to help slow the car down. Also part of the system is a reverse thruster that drops down from behind the exhaust pipe to reduce the strain on the brakes. From her Mabuk, Korea, office, Kia green-technology engineer Avril Babo said, "The big problem with most emission reduction systems is that they are expensive. We wanted to come up with an answer that didn't cost the earth and could be retrospectively applied to cars already on the road." Testing in Nong Dam shows that fuel efficiency can be increased by 25%, with emissions reduced by as much as 40%. When using the system while on a severe downhill slope, fuel use and CO2 emissions drops to almost nothing. The system is even beneficial if you live in a calmer environment. Just using the system to help braking can reduce fuel use by 10%, decrease emissions by 15%, and extend brake-pad life by nearly 50%. The Kia Aero-Soul concept, with the Air Propulsion and Retardation Installation Line, or A.P.R.I.L., will be available shortly. Pricing will be revealed closer to the release date.
  13. from itv-F1 Ferrari has ushered in Formula 1's radically new era of technical regulations by becoming the first team to unveil a bona fide 2009 car. The reigning world champion squad released studio pictures of the car it is calling the F60 via an online launch on Monday morning, with the challenger set to get its track debut in the hands of Felipe Massa at Mugello later in the day. The car has been given the type number F60 in deference to the fact that Ferrari is competing in F1 for the 60th consecutive season in 2009, the only team to have contested every year of the world championship since its inception in 1950. As will become a common sight on the first cars to be designed under the new technical framework, aerodynamic downforce has been drastically cut back on the new Ferrari and the chassis appears much cleaner without the plethora of aero appendages that have sprouted on cars in recent years. The most visible differences on the new-look car are the two wings, with the front wing much wider than previous year
  14. BMW unveils new 7-series limo way ahead of S'pore launch A BMW spokesman told The Straits Times the new BMW 7-series (above) would arrive in Singapore as early as first-quarter of next year GERMAN car-maker BMW Ag has released details of its latest 7-series limo, four months before its launch in Europe and at least six months before it is due in Singapore. The new car, a direct competitor to Mercedes' S-class and Jaguar's XJ, looks little changed from the current generation 7-series except for being slightly larger and for its less fanciful headlamps and more elegant tail-lights. It is packed with new features, including those designed for fuel efficiency. The car can, for instance, charge its battery while braking. Unlike existing cars, it will stop charging the battery or turn off the aircon compressor when extra power is needed for acceleration. Lightweight aluminium is used for its roof, doors, bonnet and side panels. Other new features, which may be standard or optional for Singapore-bound cars, include a night vision system that can identify pedestrians; and a front side-view camera to help driver merge with traffic on a main road from partially blocked driveways or side lanes - a first for BMW. A BMW spokesman told The Straits Times the car would arrive in Singapore as early as first-quarter of next year. He said a range of new diesel variants will also be made available for the first time here, including a new all-aluminium 3.0-litre version that produces 245hp at 4,000rpm and 540Nm of torque from merely 1,750rpm.

  19. Toyota unveils all-new Highlander Hybrid SUV at Detroit Toyota Motor USA has issued the following press release: The all-new 2005 Toyota Highlander Hybrid gas-electric mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) made its world premiere at a press conference today at the 2004 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The press conference also featured the unveiling of the FTX full-size pickup concept truck, offering a glimpse into Toyota's future full-size truck strategy. "The Highlander Hybrid is the world's first seven-passenger hybrid SUV and marks the launch of a second all-new hybrid vehicle from the Toyota Division," said Jim Press, executive vice president and COO, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. "The addition of a hybrid system in our best-selling SUV provides further evidence that Toyota's commitment to hybrid technology will continue to run deep and wide." Like the popular four-cylinder Prius gas-electric hybrid, the 3.3-liter V6-equipped Highlander Hybrid will be powered by a new version of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain. The system was specifically developed to meet the load-carrying requirements of a mid-size SUV. The system features a larger-capacity battery that will deliver nearly double the power of the battery in the Prius. An all-new high-speed electric motor will operate at twice the speed and deliver more than twice the power as the motor in the Prius. With combined peak-system power projected at approximately 270 horsepower, the new system will improve upon the V6 Highlander's already impressive less-than-eight-second zero-to-60 acceleration. In addition to providing the fuel economy of a four-cylinder compact sedan, the Highlander Hybrid will offer the versatility, refinement, and comfort demanded in a mid-size SUV. Highlander Hybrid will come standard-equipped with front-wheel-drive and offer electric four-wheel-drive with intelligence (4WD-i). Models with 4WD-i are equipped with front and rear electric motors that will deliver balanced power to all four wheels, providing instantaneous acceleration. To enhance safety and all-weather capability, the Highlander Hybrid will feature a Vehicle Dynamic Management (VDM) system. Monitoring a variety of sensors, the system is capable of anticipating pending vehicle stability problems and then correcting the situation with a combination of braking and throttle control. The new VDM system is less obtrusive than conventional VSC but acts quicker and more effectively. Additional safety features include a tire pressure warning system, and optional front seat-mounted side airbags and front- and second-row curtain side airbags. The Highlander Hybrid will feature three rows of seats that will include rear privacy glass, a rear heater system, and rear seat cupholders. "Walk-in" steps and a second-row sliding seat make it easy to enter and exit the third row. The third-row seat also folds completely flat into the floor to create added cargo space. The second-row 60/40 split-fold seat also reclines and folds forward flat for added comfort and utility. The exterior styling will be freshened with the addition of a new front grille and bumper, and rear LED tail lamps. The Highlander Hybrid will also ride on 17-inch alloy wheels. "The Highlander Hybrid will join the Prius in early 2005, with the Lexus RX hybrid arriving toward the end of this year," said Press. "The trio will not only give consumers a broadband of hybrid-powered choices, it will firmly establish this important new technology in the hearts and minds of mainstream consumers." ******************
